Pino Palladino + Blake Mills: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Nikki Birch | June 17, 2021
The studio backdrop of this Tiny Desk (home) concert is the perfect setting for the dynamic duo headlining this project. Pino Palladino is a prolific bassist whose sound you’re already intimately acquainted with (even if you don’t know it). Blake Mills, a guitarist and two-time Grammy nominee for producer of the year, has an impressive catalog of his own. Together, in the studio, the topshelf sidemen are in their element, distilling the sonic creativity that is the first release under Palladino’s name, Notes With Attachments.

Eight pulsing calls from saxophonist Sam Gendel usher us into “Just Wrong” a melodic meditation that unfolds like a blossom in timelapse. Guitar, bass, sax and Abe Rounds’ colorful dustings of percussion in this song are magical; we soar with the musicians through varied repetitions of the melody before they gently set us back on our feet. The afterimage of our flight is still fading away when Palladino greets the viewers with a short and sweet introduction before opening “Ekuté,” a tune that explores traditional West African music, jazz and rock influences with a few modern touches of technology. “Djurkel,” the final offering in this set, is also experimental in nature. Palladino’s trademark bass sound lies in the cut, the fertile ground on which Mills, Gendel and Rounds dance dreamily around each other. This is session musicianship at its best. Each watch reveals new depths to the mastery.

Such willful stupidity should be mocked, not supported or even excused. But calling out willful stupidity as the dangerous nonsense that it is has become deeply unfashionable in the US.

Adding to the data showing Covid-19 vaccines work. At this point though, vaccines are now political. The 27% crasification factor of our country is lost.

As for unvaccinated healthcare workers: Unless they have a legitimate medical reason not to get the vaccination at this point, they should be fired just as fast as the staff at Houston Methodist.

On the surface, the news sounds alarming: More than half the residents of a Kearney nursing home recently contracted COVID-19, even after the vast majority already had been vaccinated.

But rather than casting doubt on the effectiveness of vaccines, the unusual outbreak at the central Nebraska care facility stands as proof that shots work.

While 23 residents tested positive for the deadly virus, only two showed any symptoms, which were mild and quickly cleared.

In short, the vaccinations protected the home’s vulnerable residents.

“Overall, the vaccine did what it was supposed to do: It prevented severe disease and prevented people going to the hospital,” said Dr. M. Salman Ashraf, who as medical director of the Nebraska Infection Control Assessment and Promotion Program works with care facilities to prevent and contain virus outbreaks.

The early April outbreak at the Good Samaritan Society-St. Luke’s facility in Kearney is one of only two large nursing home outbreaks documented nationally in the wake of widespread nursing home vaccinations. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on April 21 issued a report on a similar outbreak in Kentucky.

Health officials say the two outbreaks show the importance of convincing hesitant nursing home workers to get vaccinated. It’s believed the Nebraska and Kentucky outbreaks were precipitated by unvaccinated workers bringing the virus into the homes.

That would be a funny remake! I went to the theater with my mother when that came out. Aside from being the best scary movie I’ve ever seen, it was notable to me as the first time I saw a woman (Sigourney Weaver) in a movie in a tight t-shirt and panties. But she saved that cat in the end and was the hero to me.

A supplement maker tried to silence a Harvard doctor — and put academic freedom on trial (Business Insider, January 10, 2017)

The dietary supplements had ominous names, like Black Widow and Yellow Scorpion. They contained an illegal and potentially dangerous molecule, similar in structure to amphetamines.

But when a Harvard researcher dared to point that out, in a scientific, peer-reviewed study and in media interviews, the supplement maker sued him for libel and slander.

STAT has conducted the first detailed look at the legal showdown that followed by interviewing key players and reviewing hundreds of pages of trial transcripts and other court documents. The jury trial had momentous implications for the future of research into the safety of weight-loss and muscle-building pills; for the freedom of academics to speak out about matters of public health; and for our ability to learn what’s in the supplements on our kitchen counters.

You’re right, it takes a whole lot of people doing a whole lot of work to make a hospital run. But those aren’t the folks dealing with the patients one on one. That’s mostly what we’re hearing about, nurses, physician assistant, etc. refusing vaccines.

Anything that doesn’t say ‘white people are the greatest thing to happen to the planet’ is tantamount to ‘white people are bad’ to them. It’s the most unlimited form of projection, assholes steeped in persecution complex and racism accusing their opponents of the same, and getting away with it because the media is all too happy to launder their happy horseshit at face value. And too many folks are going into the weeds in trying to say what CRT actually is, when it doesn’t matter what it actually is. It matters that it’s a nice little bludgeon to create a chilling effect that will successfully whitewash any attempt to look back at our history and learn from it. Nope, by law you must now peddle the Lost Cause mythos and never once say that our country has ever had any actual issue with race until “reverse racism” invented it.

And again, it feels like they’re winning the day, by just how fast it’s moving and how eminently successful they’ve been at turning “Critical Race Theory” into a boogeyman, and how fast they were able to do it.

I’m not very happy with it either. Sen. Warnock did the same in his campaign.

With Republicans for decades painting Democrats as liberal baby-eating satanists, and sewing up a good chunk of the religious vote of nearly every denomination, along with Democrats refusing to stand up for the secular state (or even bludgeoning atheists in primaries), I’m not sure how to address it.

I lost my reëlection on the single campaign plank of my opponent “do you want an atheist representing you on the village board.”

Yes, the GOP of Ike and Rockefeller were the ones who were for civil rights, contra the southern Democrats who clung to their bigotry.

How the 1960s changed the political parties in this country needs to be taught more.

Ike is long gone, as is Nelson Rockefeller, and Gerald Ford.

Texas thermostats adjusted remotely during heat wave residents claim (KIRO-TV, Seattle)

Brandon English said his wife had turned on their home’s air conditioning this week and then she and their daughters took a nap.

When English got home, the house inside was 78, hotter than what the family expected with the air conditioning running.

“They woke up sweating,” English told KHOU.

He said that no one adjusted the thermostat but it was changed as the family slept, making the house potentially too hot for his 3-month-old daughter.

“Was my daughter at the point of overheating? She’s 3 months old. They dehydrate very quickly,” English told KHOU.

144 is a perfect square, so of course 144,000 is also a perfect square according to an innumerate scribe back in the day trying to make things sound more impressive.

Now Biblical literalists are stuck trying to make sense of this, and their literalism blocks them from having the only sensible response.

re: #112 BlueSpotinAL

What kills me is when someone says there were 144,000 in a perfect square. The square root is not an integer.

I suppose the Biblical number is part of the US Customary measurement system.

By the way, the survey foot, survey yard, and survey acre will be abandoned by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, after which only the international acre will be used. Currently both are in use from a treaty with Commonwealth countries signed in 1959.

The international acre is fixed to the metric system, and is about two parts per million smaller than the survey acre (about 24.8 square inches).

Currently, surveyors use both survey feet and international feet. This doesn’t matter a whole lot when measuring your personal property, but when measuring distances across the country for mapmaking (see self-driving car discussion previously), it makes a great deal of difference. (As such, important maps have to be marked as international feet or survey feet.)

As for a square mile (640 acres), the number of acres on a side is an irrational number of acres (25.298+), meaning square miles are also indirectly either international or survey.

But all this can be worked out with a calculator. It still makes more sense than The Apocalypse (Revelation).

Well, I’m not Jewish but plenty of preachers seem to know the Mind of God (tm) and already have my roasting spit ready.

I remember when I realized that nobody, and I do mean NOBODY actually believes in hell. And that was when I heard a sermon by a guy who later became the head of the Vineyard USA about getting the reality of hell into our hearts.

I wrote him a letter (this was 1989) and told him that if he truly believed in hell, he would be (and I am dating myself) bugging every supermarket checker and paperboy about it—but he didn’t. Nobody did.

It took a few more years for me to work out that all the Evangelical talk of hell was fairly bogus and owed more to Dante than to what people thought at the time. I do like to raise the hackles of the hellfire and damnation bunch on Twitter by telling them that I decided I’d rather go to hell than worship a god who sent people to hell, ESPECIALLY a god (that’d be the god of John Calvin) who decided from the foundation of the world who was saved and who was damned. That “god” is only worthy of the two hand salute.

At 1000 PM CDT (0300 UTC), the disturbance was centered near
latitude 28.9 North, longitude 90.9 West. The system is moving
toward the north near 13 mph (20 km/h). A turn toward the
north-northeast is expected later tonight, with a turn toward the
east-northeast expected by Saturday night or Sunday. On the
forecast track, the system should moved inland over Louisiana
during the next several hours, then move across portions of the
Gulf coast and southeastern states through the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts.
There is still a high chance the system will become a tropical or
subtropical storm through Saturday morning while the center is over
or near water. The system is expected to begin weakening Saturday
afternoon as it moves farther inland.
* Formation chance through 48 hours…high…80 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days…high…80 percent.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km)
mainly to the east of the center. Several oil rigs of off the
coast of southeastern Louisiana have recently reported sustained
winds of 40-45 mph (65-70 km/h).

The graphical display shows the storm tracking further east after it goes inland, in the general direction of Virginia Beach (though they predict it will dissipate over North Carolina).

But like others of his age (I think he’s about my age), his quest to be more than just be a piece of meat has led him to make proclamations which may sway the general public but to me he’s just another physicist who wishes that he had a soul.

He does assert that the problems we see around us today are connected to a worldview problem, but I believe he misinterprets exactly which worldview and which problem is pressing us the most towards dystopia.

Maybe I’ll post the video later… it was a Dartmouth get together (virtual) with the usual suspects (Frank, McKibben, Singer). It did have some of the non-usual suspects, including a few women, the most famous being Ayaan Ali. She ponders why she was asked to be there…

My answer is simple - the usual suspects are all old white guys (including the host) and they are desperate to include someone outside their usual circle. It’s not that the likes of Ali are purely tokens - they did have something to share in answer the gathering’s question: what is the future of humanity?

But cynical me can’t help but consider that the McKibben and Singer have failed more than they have succeeded over several decades now.

McKibben still wants to make the oil companies the bad guys. Sure, they are guilty of many things. But in the end blaming Exxon is just looking for a scapegoat - humans (Americans in this particular case) willingly wanted to not take counter measures to climate change.

It’s like blaming Trump for the hate-right in this country. Trump did not create them. He merely profited from them.

And yet, he is representative of much of the people in his political party.

Back when I was on my village board, former Rep. The Wingnut Party has been advocating that my whole life. If such a bill was to pass, that would strip me of my citizenship (something something undocumented grandparents).

I asked our (Republican) village attorney/county prosecutor about that. He assured me that King was just grandstanding and no one would really try to pass such a bill.

I know better. Given a chance, the Racist Party would do it in a heartbeat.

FWIW and TBF, Matt Gaetz vocally supported Katie Hill. I was surprised by his comments at the time, and figured then that his reaction reflected the likelihood that his personal behavior would not receive the approval of the standard hypocritical evangelical Christian. Well, there is an innocent until proven guilty argument to make, but McCarthy is in the minority.

Two-thirds are required to expel Gaetz if it comes to that, and some Republicans might choose to do that to save their own hides in the next election.

It also might not come to that if he’s turfed out in the next election.

Never take any statement by a Republican at face value, especially one who supports Trump. It’s not as though McCarthy has any principles; he isn’t stupid and he will definitely support any position that he thinks will be a winner, regardless of its merits. As soon as he thinks Gaetz will harm him or the party, he will, without a second thought, voice the opposite view.

Governor Ricketts’s BFF Punches a Woman in the Face (Seeing Red Nebraska)

You may not know Patrick Castle by name, but you are certainly familiar with his “work”. He is the leader of “Life Runners”, an evangelical anti-abortion group that helps Governor Ricketts, Senator Joni Albrecht, Senator Suzanne Geist, and all the other misogynists to get their anti-abortion bills passed. You’ve seen their ridiculous “protect the unborn” signs everywhere. Patrick Castle is also a violent extremist who assaults women at rallies and outside of abortion clinics. This is a case where everyone knows this guy is increasingly violent and out of control, and the cops refusal to put any check on him, despite multiple documented assaults, is inevitably going to lead to tragedy. In his most violent and unhinged attack yet, on September 25, 2020, while outside the CARE Clinic in Bellevue, he asked his wife to start filming, and then he brutally assaulted a CARE Clinic volunteer while loudly saying that she broke his sign. (goes to TikTok) Warning: the video at that link is extremely difficult to watch.

As reported by Marie Claire magazine, Patrick Castle stands outside the CARE Clinic in Bellevue Nebraska every week to harass patrons, staff, and volunteers. He wears a vest he had made to look exactly like the CARE volunteer vests and diverts people trying to get to the clinic for care by telling them he is a doctor and asking what time their appointment is. Sometimes he has someone in scrubs with him to complete the façade. He even goes so far as to climb into clients’ cars. He then takes them to his own anti-abortion clinic nearby and lies to them about a variety of things, including how far along they are in their pregnancy. The Bellevue Police are aware of this and say there’s nothing they can do about it because he really is a doctor so he is not lying.

I do remember. But that was after 8 years of regular reports of FBI “stings” on alleged terrorist cells that turned out to be FBI agents goading guys into orchestrating attacks, and then “catching them in the act” of receiving fake explosives/weapons/etc. But the MAGAts were cool with that because the alleged terrorists all had skin darker than a paper bag.

Yeah, but that was after spending most of the year swinging back and forth between active participants in a massive cover-up and “defenders of all that is good and just!” Remember the “leaks” in the early days, when there were supposedly 150+ agents involved in the investigation, and that Comey was facing mass resignations if he didn’t indict her?

Oh, they’ve been nursing a grudge against the FBI longer than 1/6. When there were no mass resignations or FBI agents rushing to the press to attack Comey, they became convinced that it was part of the “deep state.” Then they became more convinced when it investigated Russiagate even after Comey was fired, something they figured would be dropped quickly in order to focus on Dem “crimes.” But before 1/6, their biggest “crime” in the eyes of MAGAts was supposedly having the goods on Hunter (via his laptop) but not taking action in order to help Joe get elected.

Really, the only federal agency that MAGAts love is ICE, and that’s because those fascist thugs happily goose-stepped along to Hair Furor’s orders.

Speaking of Hunter, the weeks and months of screaming about his “crimes” is why I’m not really expecting Gaetz to feel real heat from the GQP leadership when he’s indicted. Hell, I’m willing to believe that someone like MTG will actually stand up in the House and demand a hearing into the allegations that the FBI has and is withholding evidence of those “crimes” in order to protect the Biden admin.

Interesting. Per Wikipedia, Union losses were 365,000+ total dead. (Not all of whom were white).

To get to 700,000 you have to count confederate losses. I suppose you could say that they also died to support the Union, in the same sense that Nazis died to defeat fascism.

When I first read the headline, I thought it was a joke:

But then there’s the actual op ed:

… People simply don’t want to get vaccinated! Still, many have done so, including this author. Generally, the young and educated residents of Russia’s largest cities — the so-called “new middle class” — have been most willing to get the vaccine. They consider themselves world citizens, vacation in Berlin and Paris and watch Netflix and HBO. They don’t need to be convinced that vaccination is a good idea: they volunteer for it and talk their friends and co-workers into it as well…

Putin’s supporters, however, have not been getting vaccinated. These are the older Russians, generally less educated, who travel abroad only rarely, if at all…

People who had said nothing when the authorities rigged election results, forced the courts to find innocent people guilty, shut down independent media outlets, jailed opposition members and tortured prisoners have finally started speaking out. “You are impinging on our freedoms,” they cried as the authorities came after them with a syringe.

They’ll shout for a time, but they’ll stop soon enough. Some will buckle and get the vaccine, but many more will turn to the already flourishing black market for a fake certificate of vaccination. The going price for such documents has already reached $200 in Moscow. And those same people will go home satisfied that they have outsmarted the system…

It’s worse than that. The refusal of Congressman Clyde to shake the hands of a Capitol police officer demonstrates that many GOP members of Congress believe that their base is anti-police when it comes to those who defended the Capitol from a mob of Trump insurrectionists — that the failure of those officers to switch sides shows that they were the enemy. It’s funny at my government contractor job where so many conservatives work that you have those that have gotten the vaccine, probably about 60% and the remainder are truly hard-core conspiracy types. Our company requires that you wear your masks if you haven’t gotten vaccinated. And it’s not dividing on the lines I would not have thought.

Above 75 and humid is my bugaboo as well. A fan blowing across the bed helps since it keeps the air moving there and it is relatively quiet that I get used to the noise.

Floof Cat likes to sleep against my knees. And I’ve discovered that if I shift away slightly while sleeping she snuggles up again. So I wake up with 75% of the bed bare and me against one edge due to the cat claiming all the rest.

Lap leach will sleep in the same bed with me, but will not snuggle up while I’m asleep because I kept rolling onto her. Now the minute she knows I am awake, she wants to right back in there next to me.

That is why our cat is named Bunny (she didn’t grow up with a rabbit tho’). When she and her siblings were just getting their feet under them and trying to walk/run, she would hop rather than actually walk. So my wife dubbed her Bunny. And now she is all growed up.

Those same rules of journalism meanwhile subject any pushback to those lies with the utmost of suspicion and rigor. Because that’s just good journalism, right?!

Catholic male privilege.

Catholic male *priest* privilege.

These men honestly believe that when they’re ordained priests, they become something different from the rest of us humans. After all, they have the ability to stand alter Christi and consecrate the elements of the Eucharist. Consequently, they believe that they are above the law. This goes back to medieval Europe, where there were two court systems—one for priests and one for everyone else. You, common dude, could claim you were a priest and get into the priest system if you could read. And yes, guys did it.

Just going to remind people that frequent communion (i.e., once a week, like so many of my Catholic friends growing up) is a relatively new thing. Almost all Catholics took communion once a year, at Easter. In the 19th century, frequent communion was pushed in Europe as a way to keep the faithful in the fold as so many people left their rural communities for the cities and “how you going to keep them down on the farm after they’ve seen Paris?”

oh good grief. “Was my daughter at the point of overheating?” Your daughter comes from a long line of primates who’ve spent millions of years surviving without a/c. pretty sure the kid isn’t going to die of dehydration at 78 fahrenheit. she’s not a slug.

She’s a baby, three months old, she’s not exactly able to scream that she needs a drink. Plus, humans are best suited at 72 degrees, which was the average temperature in the Olduvai Gorge for millions of years, not 78 degrees. Seriously, be nice.

I remember when I had to put my 16 year old Himalayan seal point Minute down as she had advanced cancer and I was in the process of moving from Illinois to Minnesota - I scratched in between her eyes to close her eyes as the lethal shot was given - I would have been a basket case to have her die with her eyes wide open.

So it was me and Ozzie that made the trip up to the Twin Cities back in 2008.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of a Catholic agency that discriminates against LGBTQ people.

But the thing is … it could have been a lot worse.

[clip]

Philadelphia works with a bunch of private foster care agencies to find homes for foster children. For a long time, CSS was one of those agencies — but it refuses to place children with unmarried couples or same-sex married couples, because it wouldn’t be a religious organization if it didn’t also engage in some discrimination.

Philadelphia has an inclusive non-discrimination ordinance, and in 2018 told CSS that it would only continue to contract with it if it stopped discriminating against same-sex married couples. CSS said that discrimination is an important part of its mission and religion requires it to discriminate.

Gay Catholic Foster Care Case Stupid, Bad Until You Consider What Supreme Court MIGHT Have Done!
(Wonkette)

What could have happened is weakening all civil rights protections for LGBT people. The narrow ruling only weakens protections and allows discrimination against anyone not Christian from adopting if the Christian organisation paid with tax money says so.

Sickness is spiraling in Texas…and it appears to be not Covid, but the Flu and other assorted sicknesses!

The Road Back To Normal Is Paved in Illness: A Lesson From Texas

As the saying goes, “everything is bigger in Texas!” It comes as no surprise, then, that illness roared back into Texas in a big way after the state rolled back COVID-19 preventative measures.

Since March 2020, when the pandemic began to take hold in the US, Kinsa’s overall illness signal has primarily been composed of COVID. With the easing of pandemic restrictions in Texas, a resurgence of common, everyday illnesses like strep, flu and RSV, drove the rise.

re: #273 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I will not even begin to take that organization seriously until the College of Cardinals and Cardinelles elects the first Popess.

It will never happen, because they honest to god believe that you have to be a man in order to consecrate the Eucharist. Oh, and ordained to do it, but the most important thing is that you’ve got a penis.

So many Evangelical Protestant are going this way, where women are considered second class…they’ve even come up with their own theology for it, called “Eternal Subordination of the Son”. Basically, they say they believe Jesus is eternally subordinate to God the Father, and because of that women are supposed to be subordinate to men. This is a really new development among Evangelical Protestants, and is completely a response to feminism in the 1970s and 1980s (why yes, that’s how new it is).

What gets me about this is that these guys will come stark staring unglued if a woman preaches from a pulpit, but this Eternal Subordination of the Son theology is actually a form of Arianism, an ancient heresy that led to the creation of the Nicene Creed. HOWEVER, the guys who promote it still hold their jobs, and in the case of Wayne Grudem, can put out a second edition of his “Systematic Theology” (used all over the place in Evangelical seminaries), even though he promotes and believes this.

If you want to see male privilege at work—there you go. These guys can promote a heresy but let a woman preach and OMG OMG OMG…

(For the record, I won’t recite the Nicene Creed because I think it is sexist garbage that casts God as Eternal Male. Plus I don’t believe in the Virgin Birth. But I have absolutely zero problem poking these hypocrites who hate women about their own stunning heresy.)
