Playing the Conservative Classics: All Poor People Are On Drugs.

So if you work 40 hours/week at minimum wage, that’s about $1200/month. Half of which goes to your babysitter, plus you’re gassing up the car and buying lunch every day at a deli.

Or… you use that $600/mo child tax credit to stay home and take care of the kids yourself.

Sort of a no-brainer.

They wouldn’t have to lift a finger. It’s worse, they’d have to lift their checkbook to pay taxes.

Republicans are so married to the idea of “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps” that the idea of a person not HAVING bootstraps by which to pull themselves up is anathema to them. They are simply convinced that anyone can succeed if they just try hard enough, and that because they had to do it the hard way*, everyone ELSE has to, regardless of if they are able to do so or not.

* = most of them got their success from their daddies, or from general white privilege, but they’re too busy patting themselves on the back to realize this.

In general, people over estimate their own abilities and give themselves too much credit.

One reason CRT is pushing so many buttons is because one of the basic ideas is that you, the individual, are a product of your culture and past and that you can not escape that.

The hyper-individualism that characterizes American culture rebels against that, because we all think we are masters of our own fate.

I suspect, when studied and documented, they will find that schools that were open had higher infection rates than schools that were closed.

It’s small numbers and only one data point so really can’t make any statistical claims but the Catholic K-8 school my girls were attending in a Twin Cities suburb stayed mostly in-person during the school year (my girls chose distance learning). They had a student population infection rate almost 2,4x what the infection rate was for the same age range in MN. And, that’s not adjusting for non-school days (school only reported cases IF the student potentially exposed others - so, summer and Christmas and spring break infections not included in the school numbers but are included in the state numbers), nor adjusting the school enrollment for those who chose distance, nor adjusting for the fact that most families are well-off could work from home white collar.

The traditions of the Senate can give a single Senator outsized power. An individual Senator can, and often has, held up legislation or a nomination.

I think the disconnect is between public and private politicking. Biden has been in Washington for decades, he probably has decent personal relationships with most of the Senate. He probably believed that those relationships and some old school cloak room negotiations could get things done.

A lot of people who aren’t happy about various bills dying in the Senate are upset that there’s been no public campaign to get bills passed. And I get that, to a certain extent… the problem is, you can’t do a bunch of rallies while the pandemic is still happening. That makes it hard to put pressure on Senators who, let’s be honest, probably don’t really give a fuck what their voters actually think anyway.

I guess it comes down to people want to see Biden et al do something publicly that resembles work. It’s an Overton Window thing, I think, even if you fail at first, you can at least push open the space for wins later…

But one of the things I consistently see about the folks most upset about bills dying in the Senate is the idea that the Dems have control, thus they should be able to pass anything they want, never taking into account just how thin that margin of control is, not recognizing the filibuster for what it is, and also that Republicans ‘got everything they wanted when they had control’ because they had larger margins of error as well as were willing to get nothing done, because they didn’t have to get anything done.

Dems don’t have the benefit of taking ‘no’ for an answer precisely because of that, and that means them doing stuff was always going to be a steeper hill to climb than for the GOP. But almost to a T, all the rage is focused on Democrats for secretly not wanting anything done and being worse than Republicans, with no anger reserved for Republicans being intractable assholes. I see more rage at ‘Democrats’ as a whole than even at Manchin and/or Sinema, the two that are actually the roadblocks for the party. It’s all the same ‘Dems are the real party at fault and must burn forever’ bullshit.

American Airlines cancels summer flights

CHARLESTON, W. Va. (WSAZ) - American Airlines slashed nearly a thousand flights over the weekend due to staffing shortages, maintenance, and other issues.

The TSA reported a record number of travelers during the weekend.

Yeager Airport has also seen an increase in the number of travelers.

“We are near our pre-COVID numbers again. We have been above that a handful at a time. It has been nice to see travel again and getting to some of the favorite vacation spots they couldn’t go to last year, ” said Chris Williams, public affairs manager at Yeager Airport.

Before the pandemic, Yeager Airport averaged about 800 passengers daily.

The surge in travel demand along with labor industry shortages caused American Airlines to cut flights to avoid potential strains.

A spokesperson for American Airlines said, “The first few weeks of June have brought unprecedented weather to our largest hubs, heavily impacting our operation and causing delays, canceled flights, and disruptions to crewmember schedules and our customers’ plans. That, combined with the labor shortages some of our vendors are contending with and the incredibly quick ramp-up of customer demand has led us to build in additional resilience and certainty to our operation by adjusting a fraction of our scheduled flying through mid-July. We made targeted changes to impact the fewest number of customers by adjusting flights in markets where we have multiple options for re-accommodation.”

I doubt any Republican Senator would have changed their vote on this one, no matter how hard Biden lobbied publicly from the Bully Pulpit.

The reality is that the GOP knows who butters their bread.

And it’s just as impossible to get all 50 Democratic Senators to vote to abolish the filibuster.

No, I get what you meant.

However, I would also like to point out that the economy completely shit the damn bed in the months leading up to the 2008 election. That also didn’t help Bushes approval rating or McCains chances of winning the election.

But what I was saying is that repugs are against “handouts” unless they are the recipients.

I’m so confused what we’re even arguing about anymore. From the time the country was founded and for decades after, in most states, the only people who were allowed to vote were white males who owned at least 50 acres of land. That’s racist.

But after Andrew Jackson, they didn’t have to own 50 acres of land. All white men could vote.

So… semi-yay for marginal improvement?

The measure, named the “Christine Blubaugh Act” in memory of a 16-year-old Grand Prairie girl who was murdered by an ex-boyfriend in 2000, would have mandated that Texans learn about prevention efforts at least once in middle school and twice in high school. Those lessons would have included information about the prevalence and signs of dating violence, ways to report abuse and resources available to students.

It also would have required classroom lessons about the district’s dating violence policy, which addresses the district’s plans to uphold student safety, enforce protection orders, train teachers and offer counseling to affected students, per the state’s education code.

But Abbott said that while these are “important subjects,” SB 1109 “fails to recognize the right of parents to opt their children out of the instruction.”

The Texas education code allows parents to temporarily remove their child from a class, such as sex education, for religious or moral reasons.

“I have vetoed similar legislation before on this ground, because we must safeguard parental rights regarding this type of instruction,” Abbott said in a memo. “I look forward to working with the Legislature on a narrower approach.”

GOP/right wing: let’s teach white history

Ummm… you really want to go there?

GOP: absolutely.

*deep breath*

Whites enslaved millions of blacks, justifying it via religious dogma.

Whites expropriated Native American lands, again justifying with religion, that whites were better than everyone else, and that it was god’s will.

Whites continued enslaving millions of blacks, fighting a treasonous armed insurrection to protect their right to own slaves. They lost that war, but then redoubled their effort to reclaim their power over newly freed slaves.

Whites then spent next 80 years across South lynching and murdering blacks who sought a better life for themselves.

Whites engaged in mass killings in places like Tulsa to keep blacks subjugated.

Whites implemented segregation.

Whites implemented separate but equal to justify race-based discrimination.

Whites implemented redlining to deny blacks entry into communities.

Whites planned highways, garbage dumps, and factories where blacks lived, shifting burdens of those activities on to those least able to endure them or fight back against watching their communities torn asunder by those projects.

GOP: But Lincoln freed the slaves. Democrats opposed that.

White GOP today would oppose what Lincoln did then. The parties have flipped, and the GOP are the very treasonous party that backed an armed insurrection to overthrow the govt.

re: #121 A hollow voice says NOW drain that swamp!
I used to have a book around here about the origins of a lot of American recipes and where they came from. Slaves who worked farmland got some access to the fruits of their labor, usually the stuff the white folks didn’t want, like the fatty parts of chicken, cows and pigs. At first, white folks weren’t too interested in slave food, at best they thought it beneath them and their sophisticated tastes. Obviously that didn’t last because some of this stuff is incredibly delicious. Unfortunately some of the foods were also used in white people’s stereotypes of blacks(perpetuated by books and stories, later films), hence the fried chicken and watermelon, along with tap dancing, “jive” talking, etc.

We really have to grow up as a country. And face our dumb ass nonsense. Then we can begin having nice things. I could go for that.

Turnout was awful. From what I can tell, about 800,000 voted, out of 5.7 million registered voters. That’s 14%.

That means whoever wins is getting a fraction of that 14%. That’s hardly a mandate. It’s more like a shrug.

Rivers of lava flowing into Geldingadalir valley:

Not sure if Geldingadalir valley is still technically a “valley” as it’s filled up with lave and is now a broad plane of hot rock, with the extra lava spilling downhill into Natthagi (from where it will eventually get to the ocean.)

The civil defense people built a berm on the south-west side of Geldingadalir valley, to keep the lava from flowing down the hill westward, which eventually could endanger the town of Grindavik and a geothermal power plant.
