From the last thread:

Latinos are hardly a monolithic voting bloc. Cuban and Venezuelan ex pats may listen to that nonsense, but Mexican Americans out west and on the border don’t see things the same way.

I should also include folks from further south but not the two named countries that have history with communism.

I think the fact that south Texas Latinos went more for Trump and the Republicans may be influenced by people from central and south America.

Living on the border leads to complicated politics. Even the racism isn’t easy to explain sometimes. It’s not just the white folks.

I think the fact that south Texas Latinos went more for Trump and the Republicans may be influenced by people from central and south America.

I recall reading months ago that they were influenced by the checks they received from the CARES act; that they believed that Trump was directly responsible for the money. As mentioned previously, a Russian friend of my sister believed that Trump wrote the check from his own assets. When voters receive disinformation, they may readily believe the lies they are fed especially when they hear it from friends and neighbors they trust.

re: #45 Mattand

So I watched the video.

I’m not getting the point of the question. Like, is he expecting Psaki to somehow trip up and say that “Yeah, Biden is totally cool with Communism?”

That motherfucker is just as stupid as his dad. Fox is lucky to even fucking be in the same room Psaki. Biden would have every right to ban them from the White House permanently for calling them out for being the fucking right wing propaganda outfit that they are.

Well…the point is of the question is that his audience are primed to view the question as valid, and any attempt to answer the question as invalid short of a direct confession of “All Democrats are of course communists.” Whatever Jen Psaki says the “answer” is already understood to be the latter statement, so it’s just a question of choosing the predetermined, rote response that your authority figures have told you are appropriate.

It’s a win-win rhetorical exercise, because any response can be allocated into an already-established set of preset reactions that will keep the audience frightened, contemptuous, and credulous.

And…grossly…a bunch of Fox News type are customers as well as dealers.

Thought it was a horrible concept. Why would you send people forward to fight in a war? Sending that many people forward to fight in a war would massively change the timeline so why not just send all of your info and tech back so they had a better chance at preparing? They tried (and totally failed) to address that by declaring that everybody “drafted” has already died between the present and the future, but they only use that as a way to explain why there’s no chance you’ll run into your future self. No thought is given to all the temporal havoc that would be wrought by sending a man off to his death when he wasn’t supposed to die until years later.

And spoilers:

Okay…bear with me for a moment…

…but because alien invasions movies are a way of presenting modern, mostly white Americans (or “the world” through an American lens that is mostly white) as victims of eliminationism and colonialism, and a plot structure in which the victory is achieved by pre-planning and achieved parity of force doesn’t deliver on the repeated trope of “America/humanity is the underdog that wins through pluck and individual effort”?

The smartest thing to do within the plot structure does not provide the basic inversion of expectation that invasion films lean into.

And…bonus round…this can all be happening unconsciously because almost all these films have the same genealogy that leads back to “War of the Worlds”…and while many people love that story very few actually think about what Wells was actually pointing at with his description of

(1) overwhelmingly technologically advanced invaders,
(2) that remake the landscape to their need,
(3) that literally consume the population to sate themselves,
(4) that are indifferent to people and wiling to cause mass devastation,
(5) how traumatizing this experience is to the narrator, and how that trauma lingers even after the invasion fails,
(6) and the invaders die because they can’t hack it in the native environment long enough to set up a beachhead

…in the year 1898?

ding ding ding! The single finest indictment of Imperialism ever written. I find that lesson even more stark in the musical version that hews closer to the story than the movies tend to - the battle of HMS Thunderchild is a thinly veiled retelling of things like the Battle of Isandlwana or the Battle of Greasy Grass (aka Little Big Horn) where the natives won pyrrhic victories.

They didn’t arrest many people on Jan 6 because the cops had just spent HOURS fighting for their lives. 140 of them were injured. Even if they’d had the personnel to arrest everyone and search them and evidence-tag the weapons, there weren’t enough cop cars to transport them or enough room in the jails to put them.

What there was, was thousands of hours of video and thousands of social media posts for when they got around to investigating later (later meaning, when there was a new president who wouldn’t pardon any of them.)

I’ve only seen trailers but The Tomorrow War looks a bit like a Japanese manga series, Gantz. I don’t know if anyone else on this blog knows of it, it’s pretty strange and quite horrific with a lot of whatthefu* on occasion.

This reviewer said the same.

I rode to the airport today to test if a back brace will prevent lumbar pain on rough ground. (Through the ground squirrel field.) It worked quite well, after 30 minutes bouncing up and down my back feels a lot better than the last time. The rest of my ride I blasted up and down various streets as hard as I could pedal. I hit 30 MPH on level ground and 34 on a -2% grade. I only rode 13 miles but it was high effort.

re: #64 sagehen

They didn’t arrest many people on Jan 6 because the cops had just spent HOURS fighting for their lives. 140 of them were injured. Even if they’d had the personnel to arrest everyone and search them and evidence-tag the weapons, there weren’t enough cop cars to transport them or enough room in the jails to put them.

What there was, was thousands of hours of video and thousands of social media posts for when they got around to investigating later (later meaning, when there was a new president who wouldn’t pardon any of them.)

There were, however, some insurrectionists who may not have been actively engaged in violent conduct who were allowed to stroll out of the Capitol with minimal pushback. And if somehow Trump remained in office, you can bet even the most violent of the insurrectionists would not have been prosecuted, while peaceful capital protests by POC would have been met with arrests and similar.

Nope — there was no stock market at that time — the economy was dead as was 95% of the earth’s population. But most of these films have fatal flaws if you think about them.

The only one that really got me was the idea the draftees were people who were going to die before the aliens first appeared, coupled with the insanely high casualty rate of those fighting the war. What happens to the timeline when hundreds of thousands of people die a decade before they were “supposed” to die?

re: #67 Punish Domestic Terrorists

As far as I can see, it overlaps with Gantz in only one detail: that the people recruited to fight are already dead within the theater of conflict.

In Gantz, though, this is played closer to cosmic horror: normal people, including kids and old people—and the occasional dog and ****ing panda—die, wake up in a room they can’t leave, and are ordered to use the available weapons and super-suits (no explanation on how these things work…no questions answered, period) to fight an opponent described as “an alien” located within a 1km radius zone. The recruits’ heads explode if they leave the zone rather than play along. If you survive—and that’s a serious if—you might get points towards getting a score of 100, at which point you can free yourself.

Persistent survivors are alternately completely crazy and kind of addicted to the intensity. Nobody goes through the game and stays the same person…and a lot of the characters are assholes who become bigger assholes because they’ve just proved their own potential.

I can’t stress this enough: it has some of the scariest, most intense action pieces I’ve ever read in a comic. There’s a ton of media that’s just passed through my brain leaving no marks, and I can still vividly remember bits of Gantz a decade-and-change later.

It’s also ultraviolent and has a warrant out for its arrest by the horny police.

I can’t conceive of what kind of methadone-drip version of Gantz Hollywood would arrive at, but it would definitely have a Chris Pratt aroma.

re: #13 Backwoods_Sleuth

The BLM statement was… not great.

There’s a lot of complexities in Cuba, and you can’t lay all (or even much of it) at the feet of American politics. (I’ve long thought the embargo was stupid policy, but there are hardliners on both sides of the sea that benefit from it - among Cuban Americans it provides an easy/lazy rallying point (not unlike abortion for “prolifers”) and in Cuba it provides a scapegoat to forgive the regime’s own failures.)

This is one of the more comprehensive threads I’ve seen on what’s happening, and worth the (long) read:

The embargo (or as the commies like to call it “the blockade”) isn’t why the Cuban regime is failing - there are 190 other countries in the world they can trade with, and the US can’t do anything to stop that trade (in other words, it’s not a “blockade”).

…Socialism worked great in this country until it was deliberately undermined. And as always, growing up in the third world means viewing the success of “capital” from the discard pile.

Meh. I’m just annoyed. Any contact with what the Dulles Brothers did under the rubric of “anti-communism” just shrivels my ability to cope with the way Americans talk about the Cold War.

Okay, so I’m going to be -that guy- for a brief moment and point out that there’s something deeply fucked in the way “mummy” stories make the dead person that didn’t ask to be dug up the bad guy.

I mean, if there was ever a “fuck around, find out” supernatural scenario, it’s grubbing in ancient ruins, which are literally decorated with curses, like a comparatively dim truffle pig.

I also can’t help but think about the scenario in inverted terms…in Egyptian belief, the archeologists just tore that dead person’s soul apart, denying them any kind of afterlife. Like, maybe don’t stick your dick in someone else’s existence and you won’t ended up hounded by a malediction-vomiting piece of jerky.

This is what happens when you lock a bunch of developers in a basement for 6 months, let them out after they deliver a product, and then ship it without doing any sort of testing or validation with your target audience. In other words, what 90% of companies do with their software.

Every multi family building needs to be inspected in that county. And NOT by the same agencies/companies doing it in the past.

While the ocean may be lovely, you could not pay me to live near it ever again. I did briefly when my son was a little guy, in the Coral Springs area. The Husband was transferred down there to help the company get ready to unload 3 properties and help scout locations for new ones. There were tons of problems with all the buildings up for sale. Not a lot was up to code, and the properties they wanted to buy were even worse. A lot of southern Florida is like this. Especially multi family and high rises.

Edit to add: this was in the mid 90s, the buildings in question were less than 20 yrs old. It appears things have only deteriorated from there.

Update:
Lubbock Sheriff’s Deputy killed in Levelland SWAT standoff

According to the Justice of the Peace and Constables Association of Texas, Sgt. Josh Bartlett, SWAT Leader for Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the Levelland SWAT standoff this afternoon. They also say two other deputies were shot and are in critical condition. One is a Hockley County Officer and one is a Levelland police officer.

A Lubbock SWAT team is on scene dealing with a person barricaded in a house in the 1100 block of 10th Street in Levelland. Levelland police initially reported four officers injured.

Please note this is an active scene. More shots were heard just before and after 6 p.m. Our crew has been told, “Shots are being fired in all directions.”

Everyone is asked to STAY OUT OF THE AREA around 10th & Avenue J while this situation is ongoing. Levelland Emergency Management says “Driving around aimlessly for curiosity hinders the police movements.”

Uh oh QAnon is now going after…GASP…XTIAN PULPIT PIMPS!

The QAnon Conspiracy Theory Inevitably Turns On Evangelicals

Earlier this week, Right Wing Watch noted how MAGA pastor Jackson Lahmeyer, who is running a primary campaign to unseat Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, has openly embraced QAnon conspiracy theorists as part of his campaign, only to become a target of their conspiracy theories. QAnon activists accused the pastor of pedophilia and child sex trafficking in July after he posted a photo of his young daughter wearing red shoes.

Similar allegations are now being leveled against several high-profile evangelical leaders.

Late last month, self-proclaimed “prophet” and QAnon conspiracy theorist Johnny Enlow posted a “prophetic alert” on his Facebook page in which he warned that “many of our most famous pastors and Christian leaders are about to be exposed as sexual deviants, pedophiles and worse.”

We had no idea what that meant at the time, but now it appears to be related to allegations being put forth by a woman going by the name Madyson Marquette, who claims to have been a former adult film actress who was sexually abused and trafficked by several well-known evangelical leaders, including Kenneth Copeland, T.D. Jakes, Rick Warren, and even the late Billy Graham.

In the last week, Marquette has appeared on several evangelical programs that regularly promote QAnon and other right-wing conspiracy theories to level her allegations, including a recent appearance on the “Up Front In The Prophetic” program, which is hosted by full-blown QAnon conspiracy theorists Alan and Francine Fosdick.

Yo

New Hong Xiuquan just dropped.

The Taiping dude? I thought he’s been dead for 165 years. Or….maybe he is Jesus’s brother.

Still remember a 2017 SNL skit where Trump calls Merkel and she answers, hoping it was Obama and telling him how much she misses him and loves him. Merkel must be overjoyed at seeing Biden and Harris at the top of the US government.

Why is there a USAF helicopter flying around Bucharest?
And why do they have a “Charles De Gaulle Square”??

Right after I posted that, I saw that this idiot posted this:

He’s going to have a bad time. He’s already ossified and losing it because young people put pronouns in their bios now.

Army, and exercise I think. Or practice for an aerial parade perhaps.

LEVELLAND, Texas (AP) — One officer was killed and three others were wounded Thursday after a police standoff in a small West Texas city erupted in gunfire.

………………
Flatter than a tabletop
Makes you wonder why they stopped here
Wagon must have lost a wheel or they lacked ambition one
On the great migration west
Separated from the rest
Though they might have tried their best
They never caught the sun
So they sunk some roots down in the dirt
To keep from blowin’ off the earth
Built a town around here
And when the dust had all but cleared
They called it Levelland, the pride of man
In Levelland

re: #123 Dopamine Fish

This is what happens when you lock a bunch of developers in a basement for 6 months, let them out after they deliver a product, and then ship it without doing any sort of testing or validation with your target audience. In other words, what 90% of companies do with their software.
