An Arizona judge on Thursday denied Republican senators’ motion to dismiss a lawsuit seeking records on the financial backers and other aspects of the sham “audit” of the 2020 elections in Maricopa County.

“It is difficult to conceive of a case with a more compelling public interest demanding public disclosure and public scrutiny,” Judge Michael W. Kemp wrote at the end of a seven-page decision.

Kemp said Thursday that records in those contractors’ possession were subject to Arizona’s public records law where they had a “substantial nexus” with a government agency’s activities. He rejected the argument that Cyber Ninjas and other private vendors working on the audit were exempt from public records laws. Allowing the Senate to circumvent public records law by retaining private companies would be “an absurd result,” he said.

He separately wrote that the the amounts paid by the audit’s funders were also subject to public records law: “[A]ll records disclosing specifically who is paying for and financing this legislative activity as well as precisely how much is being paid are subject to the PRL.”

Apparently Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) Twitter is all in an uproar because Pope Francis issued a thing called a “motu proprio” which basically backed off some changes previous pope Benedict had put in place.

ROME — Pope Francis cracked down July 16 on the spread of the old Latin Mass, reversing one of Pope Benedict XVI’s signature decisions in a major challenge to traditionalist Catholics who immediately decried it as an attack on them and the ancient liturgy.

Francis reimposed restrictions on celebrating the Latin Mass that Benedict had relaxed in 2007. Francis said he was doing so because Benedict’s reform had become a source of division in the Roman Catholic Church and used as a tool by Catholics opposed to the Second Vatican Council, the 1962-65 event that led to wide reforms across the global church.

Critics said they had never before witnessed a pope so thoroughly reversing his predecessor. That the reversal concerned something so fundamental as the liturgy, while Benedict is still alive and living in the Vatican as a retired pope, only amplified the extraordinary nature of Francis’ move, which will surely result in more right-wing hostility directed at him.

Francis, 84, issued a new law requiring individual bishops to approve celebrations of the old Mass, also called the Tridentine Mass, and requiring newly ordained priests to receive explicit permission to celebrate it from their bishops in consultation with the Vatican.

ncronline.org

What’s kind of amusing is that if you dig into this issue of the Latin Mass, you will find the reactionaries (many of whom now belong to schismatic groups) absolutely splitting over things such as WHICH Latin Mass? 1962 or something earlier? That’s because the 1962 mass was implemented under John XXIII and he also brought the “hateful, satanic” Vatican II and some people can’t abide using his mass. Then you start down the path of “well, we can’t use the mass of Pius XII because well, it’s not the TROO TRIDENTINE MASS of Pius V.

According to Francis’ defenders, he’s just trying to rope in the splitters. Good luck on that, Frank.

Elvis went from being the personification of Rock ‘n’ Roll to someone you are more likely to hear on a Country radio station than a Rock station.

Putin went from being an agent of the KGB, America’s arch nemesis to the very embodiment of the GOP ideal of leadership.

Saddam Hussein went from being a “force for stability in the region” to someone whose defeat was worth the lives of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis

And finally, Georgia elected two Democratic Senators and went for Joe Biden in the Presidential election.

Update:
Deadly standoff ends in Levelland, suspect in custody with injuries

LEVELLAND, Texas (KCBD) - An LSO SWAT Commander was killed and four other officers were injured in a deadly SWAT standoff in Levelland.

Law enforcement secured the area near 10th Street and Avenue J around 2 p.m. Thursday, and worked to push back the perimeter as the subject, later identified by law enforcement as 22-year-old Omar Soto-Chavira, fired shots “in all directions” from inside.

Lubbock County Sheriff’s SWAT leader, Sgt. Joshua Bartlett, was fatally struck and died from his injuries after being transported to the hospital.

Residents in the area were advised to stay away as stray bullets continued to be a concern late into Thursday night. Rumors and misinformation from social media spread quickly as Lubbock and Hockley County authorities tried to determine if Soto-Chavira was alone in the home, meanwhile shots continued to be fired at officers and deputies.

Concluding an almost 11 hour standoff with law enforcement including ATF and FBI, power to the city block was cut after sundown. Robots from Lubbock County SWAT and the Lubbock Police Department were used to locate Soto-Chavira alone in the bathroom of the home.

According to Lubbock County Sheriff Kelly Rowe, chemical agents were deployed, forcing Soto-Chavira out of the bathroom to a portion of the home that had been previously “opened up” by law enforcement.

What an utter dipshit, and probably an example of the current myth of property rights as absolute.

Code compliance officers knocked on the door at the residence in reference to a high grass violation but nobody answered the door, according to police. After several attempts to get someone to answer the door, workers from an independent lawn mowing company began to work on cutting the grass.

Moments after they started, a person inside the residence opened the front door and began shooting at mowers.

Police took cover and waited for backup to arrive. While they were taking cover, the suspect fired toward officers again twice, according to police.

I don’t think that’s it. It’s that they are nostalgic for the glory days, before the VRA forced them to allow African-Americans to vote, and now that they have a SCOTUS on board with this plan, they are working to implement it wherever they can. They will next repeal Civil Rights Act, using the same rationale as the decimation of the VRA. They probably aren’t even thinking about riots — they believe that they can chip away at rights without getting any significant pushback, especially when you have a racist SCOTUS.

4. Frankly, I can totally see facebook or any social media company doing this at least occasionally if it gets enough mass reports, given how automated reporting and moderation often work. Though given the nature of how posts spread, it’s far less likely to happen to a member of a majority religion than a minority religion in the general social graph of that poster. And someone brainwashed, in an American context, or any other context where a majority or plurality is convinced of perceived grievances is by definition likely to be a member of the majority religion.

If they’re that kind of people I think they should have their guns taken away. They’re clearly not mature enough to have them.

Speaking of, the dad of one of my son’s friends had refused to get the shot. His wife and mine work together, so my wife heard that he is finally going to get the shot because his company is going to reopen the gym but you must be vaccinated to use it.

from the atlantic via politicalwire.com - in its entirety

Ed Yong reports on the pandemic in Missouri, where ICUs are filling with more younger patients in their 20s, 30s, and 40s than before, including many with no underlying health problems.

“In part, that’s because elderly people were more likely to get vaccinated, leaving Delta with a younger pool of vulnerable hosts. While experts are still uncertain if Delta is deadlier than the original coronavirus, every physician and nurse whom I spoke to in Missouri told me that the 30- and 40-something COVID-19 patients whom they’re now seeing are much sicker than those they saw last year. Unlike last year, nurses are watching families navigate end-of-life decisions for young people who had no advanced directives or legal documents in place.”

“Almost every COVID-19 patient in Springfield’s hospitals is unvaccinated, and the dozen or so exceptions are all either elderly or immunocompromised people. The vaccines are working as intended, but the number of people who have refused to get their shots is crushing morale. Vaccines were meant to be the end of the pandemic. If people don’t get them, the actual end will look more like Springfield’s present: a succession of COVID-19 waves that will break unevenly across the country until everyone has either been vaccinated or infected.”

these people are idiots.
no they dont deserve to die.

Two California men have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly plotting to attack the Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento, part of what prosecutors say was a plan to inspire a “movement” among “patriots” following the 2020 election.

The indictment comes six months after one of the men was arrested on weapons charges after law enforcement allegedly found several pipe bombs at his home and business.

Jarrod Copeland and Ian Benjamin Rogers were charged federally in an indictment unsealed Wednesday. Rogers has faced months of state and federal court dates for the weapons charges, including unregistered possession of an explosive device, and has not yet entered a plea to the latest charges. Copeland pleaded not guilty Thursday.

“Prompted by the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election, on November 25, 2020, Rogers and Copeland began to plan an attack against a target or targets they associated with Democrats,” the federal indictment against the men read.

Ticket sales are moving slowly for the coming Trump-O’Reilly stadium tour

In Orlando, where the duo is hosting an event at the 20,000-capacity Amway Center on Dec. 12, a box office employee for the arena said, “There’s still a lot of tickets open.” The person, who like others for this story insisted on anonymity to share confidential sales data, added: “We have concerts that are doing a lot better than this.” A Bad Bunny concert being held next March recently sold out within two days, for example, and the majority of seats for a Dec. 3 Kane Brown concert have been sold already.

At the 20,000-seat American Airlines Center in Dallas, home to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and NHL’s Dallas Stars, a large number of seats remain open for the Dec. 19 Trump-O’Reilly event, according to a stadium employee who works in ticket sales.

For Trump’s Houston event with O’Reilly at the 19,000-seat Toyota Center, home to the NBA’s Houston Rockets, 60 to 65 percent of seats remain unsold, an employee with access to ticket sales information estimated. And in Sunrise, Florida, a box office employee at the BB&T Center said that they would have expected sales for the Trump-O’Reilly event there to have been “definitely higher” by now.

Delta amplifies very quickly. Many Americans are going to find themselves exposed to large initial doses of the virus, then having it successfully exploit their body to reproduce in far greater numbers than the original, which was already deadly to sick or unlucky people.

Vaccinated people will feel like they have a cold. I expect unvaccinated people to die in hospital hallways when they run out of space. There are just too many shitheads living in narcissistic alternate realities.

I expect that a lot of recovered Covid patients will subsequently die of flu or measles or some other contagion to which their damaged systems will be vulnerable and against which they also refuse to be vaccinated. The anti-covid measures that mitigated the spread of the flu last year will be largely absent this year. Other factors could still intervene to prevent this scenario but at this point a genuinely apocalyptic event is a real possibility.

The latest finding from The Institute For The Incredibly Fucking Obvious:

AP: Few Arizona voter fraud cases undercut Trump’s claims | Yahoo! News

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona county election officials have identified fewer than 200 cases of potential voter fraud out of more than 3 million ballots cast in last year’s presidential election, undercutting former President Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen election as his allies continue a disputed ballot review in the state’s most populous county.

An Associated Press investigation found 182 cases where problems were clear enough that officials referred them to investigators for further review. So far, only four cases have led to charges, including those identified in a separate state investigation. No one has been convicted. No person’s vote was counted twice.

While it’s possible more cases could emerge, the numbers illustrate the implausibility of Trump’s claims that fraud and irregularities in Arizona cost him the state’s electorate votes. In final, certified and audited results, Biden won 10,400 more votes than Trump out of 3.4 million cast.

there are some painful clips provided mostly by law students on the internet of lawyers who manage to completely crap their pants in front of judges, to the point where the judges end up telling the lawyers they will be contacting the law schools to figure out how those schools are producing such pants-crapping product. Loyola in New Orleans springs to mind.

In a valley here. We have had a few touch down but most just break up because of we are in a valley. Tornados love flat land.

We get them fairly frequently here in the wild north country. A small one struck just north of my town about 2 years ago; I drive across its path when I go to work. A rather larger one struck a nearby town about 5 years ago, the tornado sirens went off and I had to take fishspawn into our basement to take cover from that one.

mbl.is finally moved their cameras to a hill that overlooks Meradalir valley. Now the cameras face southwest, so we can see the cracked side of the volcano.

That’s a whole lot of hot lava in Meradalir.

Also: I never knew Iceland was so dreary. All during July it has been rainy and foggy and people are wearing coats. In the middle of summer.

I was there in the middle of summer. It’s pretty fuckin’ dreary…they get a June gloom a lot like we do here in the Bay Area…only with more drizzle.

Had most of my tornado scares in northern Ohio and Indiana on the I-80-90 corridor. Tornado warnings are the best at night with your weather band radio screaming about the town you are coming up on having touchdowns and shit is loose everywhere. Then the Toll booths go dark….

My parents have had several firsthand encounters with tornadoes in central Indiana, back in fish country. They’ve been spared direct damage, but it’s not for lack of trying on the storms’ part.

Tornadoes tend to do that. They’re unpredictable and wild. I read about one that struck the lake where my parents vacation every year, back in the 1970’s. It physically tore cabins from their foundation pads and threw them, intact, into the lake.

re: #154 Belafon

I’m pretty sure nearly every city has these. I suspect every town greater than 30k people has an ordinance like that.

My first “job” in my North Dakota city was mowing lawns for the local slum lord. He owned the duplex next to the house I grew up in and my dad absolutely hated that he never took care of the yard. So my dad made me mow that in addition to ours and the slum lord happened to notice me mowing it one day. He stopped and asked me if I wanted to make some money mowing another place. Offered something like $40, which I thought was crazy in 1975. Asked my dad if it was OK and he laughed and said yes. So my 13year old body pushed my dad’s lawnmower and some gas a mile and a half crosstown. Knew right away I was at the right place. The grass was more than half way to my knees. Had to walk the yard to find all the hidden toys and stuff first. Then basically mowed it once by pushing the lawnmower at a 45 degree angle and once more to finish the job. Luckily my dad knew what I was getting into so he showed up with the pickup truck and a soda a couple hours later to drive me home. Made a lot of money that summer mowing the guy’s lawns all over town. Every one I the same condition. Finally believed my dad that I was being paid so much because it was a fraction of what he’d be charged if the city mowed them for him. Boy did I trash my dad’s lawnmower that summer but I did learn a bit about keeping one running.

Iowa abortions climbed 14% in 2020, after jumping 25% the previous year, new state data show | Des Moines Register

The number of abortions performed in Iowa climbed nearly 14% in 2020, after jumping 25% the previous year, new state data show.

Iowa had seen years of steady declines in abortions before 2019. But that trendline has changed.

The state saw 4,058 abortions performed in 2020, up from 3,566 in 2019 and 2,849 in 2018, the new numbers show.

The new data were shared with legislative staff Thursday by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The turnaround in abortion numbers came in the wake of Iowa’s 2017 decision to withdraw from a federally funded family planning program, which helped thousands of Iowans gain birth control supplies and information on how to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The program was replaced with a state-run version, which barred Planned Parenthood’s participation and has served fewer Iowans.

Limit access to birth control, there’s going to be more unintended pregnancies, which means more abortions. These conservative dingbats who say they want to get rid of abortions also want to get rid of things (comprehensive contraception, sex education) that are proven to reduce the number of abortions.

re: #62 Hecuba’s daughter

OT — I know there is controversy about the Olympics, with dire warnings about the uptick in coronavirus cases in Japan. That said, although their population is about 38% of ours, their new case count is only 10%, and their daily deaths are about 6% of ours, even though only 20% are fully vaccinated and another 12% are partially vaccinated. So if anyone can conduct the Olympics safely, I believe that Japan can accomplish that.

The average Japanese don’t think so. They think they’re being held over a barrel by the International Olympic Committee and the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party). In a normal situation* I would have completely agreed with you, but given how the Olympics are basically “hands off, look the other way”, it has all the possibility of a major clusterfuck in the making.

* In fact, in 2018 and 2019 I said that Japan would probably put on a really great, organized show. And if it wasn’t so insanely expensive, I’d love to go. Not now.
