This is long but fascinating takedown of the Claremont Institute since it has doubled down as a major purveyor of white supremacism wrapped in myths about the Founding Fathers’ purity of ideals.

Here’s a paragraph that references floor-pooper Chuck Johnson:

“First off, the Claremont Institute has knowingly provided cover to, and made common cause with, an alleged white supremacist named Darren J. Beattie. Beattie has a Ph.D. in political philosophy from Duke University. He was a speechwriter in the Trump White House but was fired in August 2018 for having spoken at a conference in 2016 alongside white supremacists. This caused a stir at the Claremont Institute, since, according to reporting at the time, Beattie appealed to the organization’s listserv for help (Beattie had spent a few weeks at one of Claremont’s summer fellowship programs; the listserv was eventually shut down by Ryan Williams, Claremont’s president, when another controversial Claremont fellowship alumnus, Charles Johnson, weighed in with offensive remarks). The American Mind nevertheless published an article by Beattie in January 2019. More recently, Beattie founded the website Revolver.News, which, as we have seen, influenced Anton. Launched in May 2020, Revolver.News appears to have been key in spreading conspiratorial child-abuse allegations against Hunter Biden. In June, Beattie took credit on behalf of Revolver.News for “breaking” a story about the Deep State’s involvement in January 6….”

It’s funny — but also dangerous. There are people out there who take him seriously and will use his words to justify their belief that the election was stolen. The late Mike Royko realized over 30 years ago that you have to be careful with satire because too many are way too gullible. I know that I’ve occasionally taken words meant in jest seriously — a friend has accused me of having no sense of humor.

ETA: I do have to say that the Intercept seems to have improved significantly with the departure of Greenwald.

Because police are increasingly recruited from the ranks of former military, and are portrayed as a paramilitary organization. In addition, police are still revered as heroes by people who have their heads in the sand and are thinking of olden times, when police were friendly and neighborhood.

Let’s not forget that Trump received more votes in California than any other state. The state may be blue, but it’s very large and has a large brainwashed and/or fascist contingent.

Do have to say that, unlike Trump, after his experience with Covid, Boris became a true believer and treated the disease seriously. Maybe I’m being inaccurate here — Trump may have always been a true believer (given his conversation with Woodward) but he had no interest in communicating that fact to his base. He was more concerned about the economic “health” of the country than the actual physical health of its residents, not caring that the economic well-being was intimately tied to our physical well-being.

Los Angeles hasn’t always been a liberal city (google Sam Yorty and Daryl Gates), and California hasn’t always been a liberal state (Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon).

The contracts that give police unlimited power to hide complaints, that give the union full authority to sabotage any investigations, have been in place a long time, and turning them over would take supermajorities.

Yep, that’s a Poynter, all right: your grandad took some liberties with the composition, but that mosaic is taken right from old Ed’s 1890 piece.
Which currently resides at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney: and is notably larger than the mosaic: the canvas is something like 8 x 12 feet.

If you don’t want to sell or donate it, there really aren’t many options for artworks (especially heavy ones) outside of “keep or store”; if it’s a matter of having a keepsake from your grandfather, then I’d suggest “keep”: though finding an inobtrusive place to display a piece like that may be a problem…

If you decided you’re antivax from the internet ..YouTube, Facebook etc…
Then if you catch it you shouldn’t have to got to a hospital
Just check those same websites for how to treat yourself

I Mean if you didn’t listen to your doctor before why would you trust a doctor now?

A new CBS News/YouGov poll of those Americans who are not vaccinated finds 74% of them would not get vaccinated even if their doctor recommended it, while another 16% said their doctor already has suggested it.

Just 10% would get vaccinated if their doctor recommended it.

In other news….Facebook has decided I am a butch lesbian and is referring me to butch lesbian only Facebook groups. Which is fine, but I am not a lesbian and can’t join the groups because they all specifically say lesbians only.

I don’t do makeup and half of my clothes are men’s or large boy sizes. Does that make me butch then? Women’s clothes lack pockets, and are also more expensive than male equivalents, like sweat pants for example. Or even basic sneakers, there is a price point difference of 25 percent sometimes. And how the hell did Facebook even come to this conclusion? There are few pics of me online, for a few reasons, so I don’t get it. The internet is weird.

Catching up on thread:
LAPD: they had officers posted in Blythe, on the Colorado River 100 years ago
Porn: in 1991 I was holding my 1 year old daughter in line at a now defunct steakhouse in Oxnard, and in walks Marilynn Chambers and film crew. She was super charmed by my adorable kid and I let her hold her for a second, and she was super happy and kind afterwards in the 3 minutes of small talk
On Alpaca: I bought a Peru made Alpaca tie in 1986 at UNICEF gift shop in Tucson
Still wear it, occasionally in meetings when I want that genius from West vibe
On Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Greene in LA: even the conservative tv station treated them like sideshow freaks. Gotta up your game or you get replaced by some chump climbing an illuminated tower.

Most of the people I know feel threatened/disgusted by the idea that one of “those people” might find them attractive, and say so. First of all, most people aren’t bold enough to go up to someone all like, “You’re really hot and I want to do sexual things to you,” and secondly, I’d actually find that quite complimentary. I may not be attracted to them or have a desire to have sex with them, but if any of the homosexual or bisexual men I know told me they were attracted to me, I’d be flattered.

It’s not the restaurant industry, but I’m fucking sick of hearing my brother-in-law bitch about how he can’t fill positions at his place because “they” are just staying home and collecting federal COVID payments.

He works for a national delivery service. It’s not that people don’t want to work; it’s that people don’t want to work in his shitty, barely-above-minimum wage warehouse job in 100° heat when they get can finally get a better job elsewhere.

Every time I bring this up, I get the old “You don’t know what you’re talking because you’ve never managed a business” treatment. Next time that happens it’s going to be “Fuck you, I actually take the time to read up on current events and actually do know what I’m talking about”, regardless of how many of my nieces and/or nephews are present in the room.

Christ, he hates his job and he’s making six figures. The fact that he’s shocked that no one wants to kill themselves in a fucking warehouse for shitty pay is unreal.

He was talking to a friend of his and this guy was bemoaning the fact that Walmart can’t fill overnight, third shift shelving jobs, like somehow people were turning down free money. No fucking clue.

re: #116 A Mom Anon

I have trouble understanding why anyone is at all threatened by someone’s gender or sexual preferences. I don’t care what genitalia you have or who you love. What matters is who you are, if you have integrity and if you have a kind heart. That should be the only thing that matters but humans are stupid and seem to need someone else to hate on.

I don’t, unfortunately, thanks mostly to my cousins and other family members. They are instantly unsettled the moment something doesn’t fit their status quo worldview, be it gender (anything non-cis heterosexual), race (anything non-white), or religion (anything non-Christian generally, and non-Catholic specifically).

At least in my experience, white Christian people have a stupefyingly crippling inability to be self-critical on issues like those above. And any tiny, bubble wrapped suggestion to that effect usually results in condescension and eye-rolling at best, and punch throwing at worst.

I’d try:
well if you can’t fill your open positions maybe you don’t either

We’re getting there. I’m trying to avoid making a scene at family get togethers, mostly because it’s not a good look for me if my nieces and nephew see me calling out their dad on his bullshit, regardless of whether my point is valid or not.

There’s a general theme at these functions where someone says something easily disprovable or racist, and I’m the one that gets yelled at for pushing back.

Conservatism and religion both are “zero-sum” games. If someone else’s rights are made equal to yours, yours have been diminished.

The scare over same-sex relations is almost entirely driven by Christians who captured the Republican Party.

Since Christians who align with the Democratic Party generally don’t care, it shows that Christianity is not a moral guide for romantic relations.

You can see it in debates between Christians on YouTube. Folks like Paul and Morgan (a folksy-style apologetics channel actually funded by Libertarians), versus progressive “God is Grey” (condemned by many Christians because she is a single mother).

Oñate was so cruel that the Spanish government took note and banished him for it. Too cruel for a ca. 1600 conquistador? The mind recoils trying to imagine just what it would take. It’s kind of like Tom Lubbock being thrown out of the Texas Rangers for brutality in the 1850s.

Oñate apologists (there are some these days) can do no better than claim that he only had the victims’ toes, rather whole feet, amputated. This is on the grounds that lopping off a whole foot would have made them useless as slaves (they had also been sentenced to “personal servitude.”)

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Spectators cheered Saturday as a stone statue of a Confederate general was hoisted by a crane and removed from a pedestal where it stood for 99 years in front of a city hall in south Louisiana.

The Advertiser posted video of the work that happened a day after United Daughters of the Confederacy signed a settlement agreeing to move the statue of Gen. Alfred Mouton or let the city do so. A trial had been scheduled for July 26.

“The Confederacy has surrendered,” attorney Jerome Moroux told The Advocate. Moroux represented the city and 16 city residents who wanted the statue gone.

The women’s jeans I have found that fit have pockets but they are so shallow that if I’m lucky are maybe three inches deep. I do sew, so I have taken a couple of pairs and made the pockets deeper by adding extra fabric. And try finding denim any more without spandex added , it’s annoying and wears out faster than 100 percent cotton denim.

Any friend or family member on Facebook could have shared a photograph or description of you to their friends without you knowing it, and Facebook will pick that up.

Anyone who has signed up with Facebook has agreed to be promiscuous with every bit of data Facebook can scrape from any place (including non-Facebook sources). Post on Disqus commenting sections for newspapers or blogs? Facebook has that information. Listed in the telephone book? Facebook has that information.

Even after you delete Facebook, they retain your data to sell to other companies. You do not have the right to be forgotten by libertarians.

For agricultural or industrial purposes, sure - I’m sure there are logistical difficulties with the choice of material; iron or steel pipes would rust quickly and become a maintenance nightmare, and PVC has its own problems. However, I don’t think it’s feasible to transport clean drinking-quality water over such long distances via pipeline.

Isn’t the underlying problem, at least when it comes to agriculture, that crops are being grown in unsuitable places because states provide basically “free” water? Water that is then not available to combat fires, provide essential needs of residential communities, and alleviate other devastation due to drought. Isn’t this the infamous communize costs-privatize profits game that supports the capitalist society? Why are almonds being raised in deserts in California?

California farmers have been moving to my Arizona desert County, bringing Almonds, Pecans, and Pistachios because land is cheap an water is free. There’s also a huge dairy. We are experiencing an uptick in earth fissures.

I live very near a major tributary of the upper Colorado River (the Eagle River). From my vantage point we’ll need several years of big winters (400+ inches of snow in one winter in every subalpine region in western Colorado) for Powell and Mead to get anywhere back to normal. Last big winter I remember was 2010-2011.

Something like a third of all energy use in California is done moving water around. From fresh water to waste water, California’s rather 3-D landscape means moving water up hill quite often. Whether it is pumps drawing water from wells or moving water around the connected water systems of the state, it’s a major undertaking.

A couple weeks ago, I was going to express my concern here about what was happening to the Chicago Tribune. The publishing company was purchased by a hedge fund, and given what often happens in that situation, especially when the paper has been historically very “right” but with an increasing presence of more progressive columnists, I feared a bloodbath, especially given the subsequent departure of so many voices — on both the left and the right (good riddance to John Kass). We will still have to wait to see what ultimately happens, but I felt reassured when the FB feed of the Tribune contained responses from many readers, most with outrage that the paper was becoming “woke” and abandoning its conservative values.

Until the 21st Century, the Tribune had always endorsed Republicans for president; but then it endorsed local pol Obama for both his terms, Johnson in 2016 and Biden in 2020. I would have cancelled my subscription if it had ever endorsed Trump. But maybe the paper is indeed reflecting the more diverse community that it represents.

Because police are increasingly recruited from the ranks of former military, and are portrayed as a paramilitary organization. In addition, police are still revered as heroes by people who have their heads in the sand and are thinking of olden times, when police were friendly and neighborhood.

Police have never been friendly and neighborly, as a class. No idea where that mythology sprang up from.

Perhaps in larger cities such as LA, Chicago, and New York. But when my parents were kids, the police officers in their little one-horse town in flyover country were just regular guys doing a job. They were members of the community, they lived there and participated there and were known there. I have a purse large enough to carry a MacBook or iPad in it. Or two 1-liter bottles of Coke, or all of that plus a phone, a wallet, pens, medication, etc. etc. But it’s not so large that I’m asked to check it in as a backpack at certain stores.

My mother used to get onto me for not using a purse. Now she tells me that my purse is too heavy. *Possibly* it’s too heavy. *Possibly*.

Is it a right wing fallacy that undocumented immigrants drive down wages.

These are people who gladly work jobs AMERICANS DON’T WANT TO, often for what you and I would consider a pittance.

If anything this drives down costs (which. is a good thing) and not wage.

But these people really know fuck all about economics anyway.

re: #119 Dopamine Fish

Most of the people I know feel threatened/disgusted by the idea that one of “those people” might find them attractive, and say so. First of all, most people aren’t bold enough to go up to someone all like, “You’re really hot and I want to do sexual things to you,” and secondly, I’d actually find that quite complimentary. I may not be attracted to them or have a desire to have sex with them, but if any of the homosexual or bisexual men I know told me they were attracted to me, I’d be flattered.

I’ve always been flattered when gay people find me attractive. There’s a reason why interior design and fashion are filled with gay people. They tend to have really good taste, so if they’re attracted to me, I take it as an extreme compliment.

Yeah, my brother at 62 lasted 2 weeks working the back at a Lowe’s. Literally back-breaking work moving heavy shit by hand from one end of a store to the other. This is a guy who has spent over 40 years routinely working 12 hour days supervising kitchens, so it isn’t like he finds hard work beneath him, as I do.

The police chief, fire chief, and mayor, of Morrison, CO showed up to my grandfather’s graveside service at Red Rocks Cemetery in 1998.

In the last year or so that my husband was able to stay at home, he got mad because I told him he could not walk to another place a half mile away in the heat. So he got up and left. I watched, and he got to the end of our drive way and just kept going. So a friend and I got in the car and went after him. He wouldn’t stop, although he was getting pretty wobbly. So I called 911. Didn’t know what else to do. The sheriff came out himself. By this time, my husband had gone about a third of a mile, and he was exhausted but would not stop. The sheriff pulled up and talked to him, man to man, for a while, and talked him into getting into my car and going home. Thank goodness. If my husband had gone done, we would have needed an ambulance. He was never even able to walk to the end of the driveway again. It just wore him out. But I really appreciate what our sheriff did for us!

That turned into a series of letters between the senior editor of the magazine and me. Eventually, The Economist did disavow their support of Bannon’s rally, and I resubscribed.)

So I read. Never heard of the gender critical movement before although I have heard of TERFs.

“Gender critical” is just TERF rebranded. They are the same thing. When a conservative idea becomes toxic, they rebrand the idea, they do not change it.

See also: Horse and Sparrow economics, voodoo economics, trickle down economics, tax breaks for job creators economics. All the same system since the XIX Century, just different names.

The GC “movement” is basically a British phenomenon at this time. It’s most prominent face is the LGBalliance being funded by, wait for it, The Heritage Foundation. Its main goal is to drive a wedge between the LGB Communities and the Transgender Community. They have to date, had some success. But the entire LGBT+ Communities as a whole, is starting to push back against them.

Once again we have to tell Christians “Jesus can’t drive.”

Woman lets ‘God take the wheel’ as a test of faith in Beachwood high-speed crash (WJW-TV, Cleveland)

TL;DR, she decided to run a red light at 100 mph to prove her faith in God. She ran into a car, utility poles, another car, and ultimately a house. Her eleven year-old daughter was in the front seat.

The other drivers were not hurt. The hospital said they found no impairment from drugs or alcohol (but you’re not allowed to write on a medical form that she was impaired by Christianity).

Traffic cameras caught her driving through the red light, which is how the police estimated the 100mph speed.

She told police she’s been going through some “trials and tribulations” and was recently fired from her job.

The woman said she “let go and let God take the wheel,” according to the police report.

She told police she believed she did the right thing, the police report states.

The child was taken to UH Rainbow Babies for further evaluation.

She has been charged with felony assault, endangering a child, and driving on a suspended license.

This is not unusual; there are numerous instances in the United States of Christians trying to prove their faith by allowing “Jesus to take the wheel,” and from pretty much every denomination.

And of course, since she survived, she can spin it as “God protected her” (and everyone else she endangered).

It will likely strengthen her faith.

The flip side would be if she didn’t survive, other Christians would either argue she didn’t have enough faith, or “God called her home.” Same with her daughter. If she killed someone else, that’s God calling them home (or punishing them).

After more than sixty sexual abuse allegations against it, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut is filing for bankruptcy rather than pay out for sexual assaults.

The Catholic Church remains the wealthiest private organisation on the planet, funded by hundreds of millions of Catholics around the world every Sunday.

They tried that stunt here in Nebraska as investigations opened, and a bankruptcy judge refused to allow them to declare bankruptcy, saying the diocese cannot represent the organisation as only a part of it. The case here is moving forward with the intent of actually forcing a payout. The Vatican refuses to recognise the authority of Nebraska courts (too bad for them).

Her son, Shane, had been airlifted to the same hospital she was staying in and was in the room right next to her, but doctors didn’t tell her because they didn’t want to worry her. Shane was a dire situation of his own, facing renal failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

The Public Health Director of Graham County, NC says that only 31% are fully vaccinated, and it is definitely political.

She urges others to get the vaccine. Because the GOP has insisted on a genocide, and conservatives don’t care about anything unless it affects them personally, those others won’t listen. They’re the people the National Review says we should mollycoddle.

Supreme Court Ruling Upholds Private Property Rights (Farm Bureau)

TL;DR, the Farm Bureau is cheering the 6-3 conservative Supreme Court decision overturning a 1975 California state law allowing union organisers onto farmland where farmers provide housing for farm workers.

Essentially, the Supreme Court has authorised slavery again, under the rubric in John Roberts’s majority opinion of an “unconstitutional taking.”

Of course, union organisers are taking nothing, and there is no mention from the conservative majority about the rights of association by farm workers.

Some have compared the ruling to the reimposition of slavery in California.

The case was kicked off by a couple of farm workers getting mad and walking off from union organisers on a farm. The owner then sued the state arguing an unconstitutional taking of his property (apparently that would be the farm workers, since the union organisers didn’t take any actual property).

Because of this, it has also been compared to declaring traffic lights unconstitutional because someone decided to run one (like the Christian up above).

Atheists refer to it as “you can’t talk someone out of something they talked themselves into.”

In the vast majority of cases, they willingly sought out that information. It’s not brainwashing if you’re looking for it.

The most caring thing a person can do for a family member or friend is use those buttons on a television remote called “parental controls” and lock out the propaganda they willingly seek, or delete Facebook (expecting incoming fire over that).

Texas man who called vaccines ‘poison’ dies from COVID-19 after spending 17 days on a ventilator (Raw Story)

A 54-year-old Texas man who thought COVID-19 vaccines were “poison” died from the virus last month, and was buried by his wife and three sons on Father’s Day.

Now, Alan Scott Lanoix’s sister is sharing the story of her brother’s death to “save a life” — by encouraging others to get vaccinated.

“It’s hard to believe that one decision can change your whole life,” Lanoix’s sister Lisa Adler told New Orleans’ CBS affiliate. “The kids had to bury their father on Father’s day. He thought the vaccine was poison and he was afraid of getting it and there’s a lot of people that have that same feeling.

They’ve already done those things where they have power.

We never had a statewide mask mandate here, and the governor prohibited any municipality which did not have a public health board from imposing mask mandates (he lost in court to the Omaha/Douglas County Health Board). He prohibited any government building from imposing mask mandates, social distancing, or limited hours (including schools).

These are folks who’ve spent months totally BSing about the statistics of the pandemic, it’s a given that they’re not going to be honest about how things have really worked versus how they want to portray them. They’re gonna sneer at Dr. Fauci and others as “so-called ‘experts’” and call them “liars” for pushing masks that “don’t work” and vaccines that are “dangerous.” And present the idea that people just walk around unvaccinated and unmasked as “common sense” because “the cure can’t be worse than that disease.”

Dear Reader,

Today The Washington Post is joining news organizations across the globe to bring you an important story. Digital surveillance pervades our society, and new technologies offer more power than ever to track every aspect of our daily lives. The danger of abuse has never been greater. In most countries, there are no effective rules or standards limiting private companies that sell surveillance technology to governments or others.

That is why we have devoted extraordinary resources to joining the Pegasus Project.
The Pegasus Project: Private Israeli spyware used to hack cellphones of journalists, activists worldwide

The project was conceived by Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based journalism nonprofit, which, along with Amnesty International, a human rights group, had access to records that formed the basis of our reporting: a list of more than 50,000 cellphone numbers concentrated in countries known to surveil their citizens and also known to have been clients of NSO Group, a private Israeli firm that is a worldwide leader in the field of private surveillance. NSO is the developer of Pegasus, a powerful spyware tool, and says it has 60 government agency clients in 40 countries, which it will not name. The company says that it licenses its software only to vetted governments and that Pegasus is meant to be targeted at criminals — drug dealers, terrorists, pedophiles — not ordinary citizens.

(more at the Washington Post)

Letter from the editor (July 18, 2021)

More than 80 journalists from Forbidden Stories, Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit, The Washington Post, the Guardian, Daraj, Direkt36, Le Soir, Knack, Radio France, the Wire, Proceso, Aristegui Noticias, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, Haaretz and PBS Frontline took part in this investigation. The journalists spent months reporting and interviewing on four continents. Amnesty’s Security Lab did the analysis on the smartphones.

Citizen Lab, an independent research group at the University of Toronto that has specialized in tracking Pegasus infections over the past several years, reviewed Amnesty’s forensic methods and data from four cellphones and endorsed Amnesty’s analyses.

Wired noted back in January that the hack of Jeff Bezo’s phone by Saudi Arabia was likely the Pegasus software from the Israeli company.

They deny the claim, saying their software cannot hack any US telephone number (now disputed by the Washington Post and the New York Times).

The thing is, software exports have to be approved by the Israeli Ministry of Defence. They know precisely where they software went (authoritarian regimes, and espionage against US corporations, journalists, and human rights workers).

This whole thing has become a grotesque joke by this point. Even the half-measure of allowing Japanese citizens to view the games in-person is gone, so that now the opening ceremony will be to either total silence or canned “applause.” I get that there’s a lot of national pride locked up in hosting the games and the organizers likely don’t want these to be the first games canceled in peacetime, but the alternative is a hollow mockery of the whole thing that was already struggling to remain relevant in the face of financial ruin and widespread corruption that have plagued the games for decades now.

House Bill 244 (ostensibly a bill for military families) prohibits schools from enforcing any CDC guidance, including quarantining students or staff who test positive for Covid-19.

The bill states an unvaccinated person cannot be treated any differently than a vaccinated one.

The bill goes into effect in ninety days. Gov. Mike DeWine (wingnut) says if the CDC would just approve a vaccine that would make the issue moot (narrator, no it won’t because wingnuts will never be satisfied). See Tennessee repealing all vaccination requirements to avoid the CDC’s upcoming full approval of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

I think it was Beijing for me, what with the efforts people went to to act as if hosting the games in one of the most polluted cities in the world had nothing to do with money changing hands. Then there was London, where the bid had been won in part on promises that they could just renovate existing facilities, only to admit after they won the bid that most of the intended facilities were beyond repair and they’d have to spend millions building new ones. But yeah, the Rio games were such a joke that it’s pretty obvious that corruption was involved in the selection process.

That really is the reason it would never happen, the countries which have the money to burn on hosting the games despite knowing they’re an economic loser would get all sorts of irate that the most they could get for their money is a slightly nicer building in somebody else’s country. I could also imagine the opportunity for corruption only getting worse, as instead of countries paying under the table to host the games, they might now use one or more facilities as leverage against the IOC. Imagine a Trump 2.0 announcing that unless the IOC bans Chyna from the games, then the US will be keeping certain facilities closed for that year’s games.

How do you call someone who becomes gay after being exposed to homosexual contents. Did he learn it or was he born a gay?

It is a matter of doctrine that since gays cannot reproduce and homosexuality is “unnatural” they must subvert others, preferably the young and vulnerable. This is the basis behind all the “Anti-Gay Propaganda” bills that are springing up in places like Hungary, Poland and Russia

In a society where we encourage gays to suppress and ignore their instincts, finally being exposed to “homosexual contents” might help them realize what was there all along.

We are prepared to work with law enforcement if asked and, like many others, are hoping to receive information from law enforcement that will help us better understand all the details.

The content of what was shared with us is not aligned with our Biblical values. We met with our church family Sunday to share what little we knew, and our youth minister has been suspended indefinitely from his duties and the church campus pending court proceedings.

We ask that people would pray for the Brewer family and the church family and anyone else involved as we work through what’s happened.”

Note they call for praying for the kiddie diddler and his family, not the potential child victim.

For their part, the National Guard immediately condemned his actions, noting he brings dishonour on the Armed Forces. Too bad for schmuck Christian here that double jeopardy does not attach between civilian charges and the UCMJ.

Ayep, that’s one of the more common arguments, that homosexuality is due to a “lack of options.” That you “turn” gay because you couldn’t find a person of the opposite sex that was “right” for you.

How do they reach that conclusion? Why, because they knew people who said they were gay until their parents found that “right” person for them, then they were so happy in their marriage that they never said another word about being gay. Would a gay man enter into a loveless marriage just to avoid being socially ostracized or worse? Never!///////

And how did New York and San Francisco become America’s gay capitals?

Because that is where US soldiers and sailors were discharged after WW2. Many of them had gone to war from small communities, thinking themselves freaks and abnormalities, and then over their course of service, came to meet other men who shared their orientation.

After that, they decided that they were not going to return to Lodgepole, Nebraska or Barren Pine Island, Maine to live as freaks and outcasts and stayed someplace where they had a community.

I’m no civil engineer and I’m almost positive this has already or is already being looked at but if we can use huge fucking pipelines to send oil all around the country, could we possibly use similar pipelines to transport freshwater?

My area has had record rainfall this year, It’d be neat if there was a way to export some of that water to places that need it if the technology existed.

There would be an enormous amount of hell raised by people worried that water from their region was getting sucked up to grow Almond trees in California. I would prefer desalination myself. How massive would a 100 million gallon a day desalination plant have to be? That wouldn’t cover all of LA, but it also wouldn’t exactly be a drop in a bucket.

And there were decades long lawsuits fighting LA from pulling water from north around Mono Lake. (To the point that Mono Lake was losing water level seriously from the diversion of the fresh water sources that usually flowed into it.) There is now an agreement in place to allow Mono Lake to recover to some extent.

Then there was the issue of diverting water from the San Joaquin river southward. That water flow was needed to flush out San Francisco Bay, especially the South Bay. Without it, the Bay would have turned into a stagnant mass or ever-more polluted water.

The UAE is bringing four nuclear reactors online in part to power their desalination plants. They want to stop burning LPG to provide electricity and start selling the gas to countries that have gone big into renewables and need backstop fossil fuels. It takes a lot of power to desalinate water and California is already under restrictions due to the shortage of deliverable generating capacity, never mind the construction and operating costs of such plants.

My “engineering solutions to people problems” was to lay some big-bore plastic pipes on the seabed running from Alaska down the coast to California and pump fresh water to the cities of The Great American Desert that way.

She has been charged with felony assault, endangering a child, and driving on a suspended license.

This is not unusual; there are numerous instances in the United States of Christians trying to prove their faith by allowing “Jesus to take the wheel,” and from pretty much every denomination.

Apparently, it’s considered preferable to use treated wastewater. From a response to a letter in Scientific American:

In response to Arzoomanian: Converting sewage into potable tap water is not necessarily easier than treating seawater. There are a number of steps involved in creating potable water from sewage in addition to reverse osmosis. But purifying sewage is likely to be cheaper and is better for the environment, making it a potentially more attractive option than desalination. For a start, the product being treated is already available on site at a wastewater treatment plant, avoiding the energy and infrastructure required for pumping water from the sea. What is more, there is a large amount of waste brine involved in desalination, which needs to be disposed of. In comparison, sewage needs to be treated anyhow and, in the case of San Diego, would end up being disposed of at sea—and polluting coastal waters—if it was not converted to drinking water.

- increasing the corporate tax rate
- a minimum corporate tax on multinational corporations
- Repealing any part of the 2017 tax-cut
- Raising the tax rate on millionaires
- Raising the capital gains tax
- Stepping up the basis for inherited property

And we’ve just added they wont support increased funding for the IRS to better enforce existing laws (we won’t go into the lunacy of the why of this)

Looking at the June real estate report for San Diego county, and there is no evidence that we are post-pandemic.

Now when the July report comes out perhaps there will be big changes, but I am not holding my breath.

The median and average sales prices keep climbing, and climbing sharply.

Then I went to look at the official CPI statistics and there is clear evidence that inflation is back.

However, I doubt that the adjustments made to so many people (retirement, wages, etc.) will go up enough to cover inflation.

We are now in a position that is very dangerous. I am worried the Democratic party is not appreciating how much the electorate will turn on the party in power once inflation becomes unbearable.

And pretending the Fed can fix things is dangerous too, because the Fed can only patch over the holes, not address the fundamental problems.

Here are the fundamental problems:
1) Real estate is finite;
2) population goes up;
3) energy is strictly speaking abundant (thanks to the sun) but our economy is built on depleting fossil fuels.

The important things of living life is having a roof over one’s head, fresh water and a sewer system, and way for people to work so an economy can function to supply all that is needed.

We are so far behind where we need to be in building sustainable urban areas.

And sustainable regions.

And we are pretending that “retirement” is a forever right. Well, “retirement” is a 20th century concept and it may not make it to the 22nd century.

Simply mandating higher minimum wages will not fix the problem.

As long as our society is designed around the idea that being much wealthier than your neighbor is the highest form of achievement in life, the society will undermine its ability to provide the kind of life that has what we all take for granted as a modern lifestyle.

The American modern lifestyle was built on available land and cheap energy.

Without those, all that is left is the rich outbidding the poors for whatever is available.

Biden’s wish for a large infrastructure bill is worthwhile, but those kinds of things don’t address the current lopsided cash-flow towards those who have amassed great wealth the past 5 decades or so.

We are now in an urban land rush that only the rich can afford.

But over half of our population now wants to live in urban areas.

And moving to the country is basically not an option for most people, because jobs are where people are at, and people are now in urban areas.

The inflation spike is transitory, and a large part of it is due to a spike in used car prices. The price of gasoline which spiked as people started driving again has already stabilized, and oil is dropping sharply today. What we don’t want to do is strangle the economy while a lot of people are still unemployed.

The CPI formula overweights the monthly gasoline prices.

Because Americans are driving more fuel efficient cars, and because of social changes (e.g., working from home), gasoline is not as important to the monthly family budget as it used to be.

Real estate is now driving the economic show. And when housing prices go up, rents go up too.

At least in urban areas, I propose that rent increases (or house price increases for those who are buying) now are the problem. Not gasoline.

And, another problem with the CPI formula, and this is a long standing criticism, is that it is a geographically flawed concept.

Gov. Mike DeWine (wingnut) says ***if the CDC would just approve a vaccine*** that would make the issue moot (narrator, no it won’t because wingnuts will never be satisfied). See Tennessee repealing all vaccination requirements to avoid the CDC’s upcoming full approval of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.9 percent
in June on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.6 percent in May, the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This was the largest 1-month change
since June 2008 when the index rose 1.0 percent. Over the last 12 months, the

largest 12-month increase since a 5.4-percent increase for the period ending

The greatest real danger to RW nutcakes comes from their fellow nutcakes.
Nazi leader George Lincoln Rockwell was assassinated by a former subordinate, George Patler, in 1968. Btw, Rockwell’s parents were the noted Vaudeville performers George Lovejoy and Claire Schade Rockwell. They were always vehemently opposed to George Lincoln’s Nazi ideology. When told of his son’s death, the senior Rockwell (then 78 years old) said, “I am not surprised at all. I’ve expected it for quite some time.”

Former nurse and anti-vaccine activist Kate Shemirani says Covid vaccines are “bioweapons” and “surveilance systems” with an “electrical charge” that can transmit and receive signals from 5G towers. She adds people who have been vaccinated will likely die “within two years”.

This is a form of sick, twisted, sociopathic performance art. People who delight in saying anything to get a reaction and draw attention to themselves.

re: #357 Targetpractice

These are folks who’ve spent months totally BSing about the statistics of the pandemic, it’s a given that they’re not going to be honest about how things have really worked versus how they want to portray them. Noem and DeSantis are both trying to set themselves up for 2024 runs on the “success” in their states, despite both regularly ranking among the top 10 in deaths per capita and total deaths.

You’re going to see campaign ads next year about the “freedom” in places like FL and SD versus the “tyranny” in CA where masks are coming back in the densely-populated counties.

All that matters is the deaths per capita, and not total number. South Dakota definitely is in the top ten on that metric, but as of now, FL is in the middle and much better than most large blue states.

Wasn’t DeWine treating Covid seriously at the beginning? When did he jump ship? Fear of being primaried?

re: #326 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

*snort* As far as I know, most dioceses have regularized their property ownership situation over the last 19 years (<<

The key here is that the Vatican actually owns nothing in pretty much all US dioceses. And the point is, if the diocese of Nebraska tries to say, “but Vatican,” the lawyers suing (who by now have QUITE a bit of experience in this area) will point out that they’re suing the diocese, which happens to have a number of property deeds in its name, and gee, if we get a judgment, we do intend to exercise that judgment on those properties for the benefit of our wronged clients.

This is not something the diocese is going to win, and “but Vatican” isn’t going to work, not with all that nice real property out there just waiting to be seized. The diocese would do well to talk to its lawyers and figure out a way to deal with this.

Or cotton in the Arizona deserts.

You *can* grow cotton in the Arizona deserts…cotton was grown in areas near my house during the Hohokam period. However, the Hohokam used irrigation and pretty much hand dug the irrigation canals over centuries. Very few of the canals were preserved—the Mormon settlers either repurposed them because they were serious engineering marvels and they WORKED, or they were bulldozed and filled in after the farmers sold out and the suburbanites, like me, moved in.

I remember driving by a cotton field with my dad and uncle, the field had been picked and there was still some cotton on the plants. My dad: “Mama would have whipped us for leaving so much behind.” Uncle: “Yup.” The things you learn about your parents. I had no idea that they had grown cotton, much less had to go out and pick it.

re: #371 Targetpractice

This whole thing has become a grotesque joke by this point. Even the half-measure of allowing Japanese citizens to view the games in-person is gone, so that now the opening ceremony will be to either total silence or canned “applause.” I get that there’s a lot of national pride locked up in hosting the games and the organizers likely don’t want these to be the first games canceled in peacetime, but the alternative is a hollow mockery of the whole thing that was already struggling to remain relevant in the face of financial ruin and widespread corruption that have plagued the games for decades now.

The Japanese in general do not want these games and are afraid that with so many people in from outside Japan that infections are going to explode. The current prime minister, Suga, and his cabinet are polling well south of Trump’s numbers at their worst. This is not exceptionally unusual for Japan, but usually prime ministers get the hint and there’s a party (LDP) reshuffle. That has not happened.

There’s a LOT of hostility towards the International Olympic Committee from the average Japanese person, and a feeling that Japan is being held over a barrel. This isn’t going to end well. :(

Didn’t this (sort of) actually happen once? ISTR a vague memory about reading about a Catholic parish somewhere (?? PA ??) that was threatening to schism off from the main Church over some BS or other, and were hauled into court to confirm that they couldn’t just sell off the church property and pocket the bucks?
I also recall (?) that the “suit” never went vary far: the courts really didn’t want to get involved with an “internal” RCC matter; and the Church and the “schismatics” patched up their dispute some way…..
