I don’t know what she is charged with, but if she insists on representing herself, she is going to get a much worse sentence than if she had a competent attorney.
It bears noting that the prosecutors were asking for “only” 18 months in the Capitol rioter case. Prosecutors usually ask for as much as they can, sometimes more. If they’re only asking for 18 months, it’s not like the judge is going to go way overboard and throw them in the slammer for 5 years. I’m happy he’s going to jail at all; and as pointed out in the previous thread, if a man who literally just walked into the Senate chamber with a flag and didn’t do any actual damage or have any seeming malice got 8 months, that does not bode well for the real assholes who tore shit up or attacked the police.

re: #37 No Malarkey!
YouTube is pushing anti-vaccer content.
Their algorithm is presumably using a presumably very high correlation between election conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccers and showing him videos they’ll think will keep him on the platform.
As long as misinformation stays on there, or at least is semi-hidden such that it can’t be suggested, people will keep on getting pushed “death promotional” content.
It’s possible to have a social media platform that increases the friction for getting out such information so that people have to at least spend a little time before hitting forward, share, etc, without actual censorship. For a while, for at least some tweets, twitter made it harder to retweet without adding some commentary to it. I’m not sure if that’s still the case, since I don’t use twitter all that much.

She has the patience of Job!!
There’s a significant number of people out there who cannot get covid19 vaccines.
It’s children under 12. That’s a huge number. Millions of kids. They can’t get vaccinated because the vaccine isn’t approved for use on children under 12.
So, to protect them, you vaccinate yourself. And hope others over 12 are vaccinated because if enough people are vaccinated, you reduce the spread and hopefully prevent those children from getting it - with potential lifelong consequences for good measure.
Those who are immunocompromised also can’t get vaccinated. So there’s a huge number of people who can’t get it for medical reasons.
Everyone else is doing it for selfish reasons, dumb reasons, or ignorant reasons. The consequences of their reasoning not to vaccinate is the same: higher incidence of covid19, more chance for new variants, more hospitalizations, more death, and ongoing economic toll (micro and macro level).
And we done found ourselves another PedoRepublican!

The interesting thing to me in MN’s statistics is how close 1-dose and fully vaxxed are. I know we had a lot of doses of the J&J vaccine, but that seems to indicate that we’re near the end of people getting their first doses. That also shows in the month-to-month accumulated statistics. It also says that Minnesotans appear to be quite good about keeping their second appointments, which is great.

That’s good. Around here, during the height of the pandemic, masks were generally frowned upon, but in true Minnesotan fashion, even our maskholes were polite enough not to get in our faces and scream at us for continuing to wear a mask. And we had a lot better mask compliance than other areas of the country, even though there was a lot of complaining about them.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department will not prosecute former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross for misrepresenting the rationale for a proposed citizenship question in last year’s census, according to the Commerce Department’s inspector general.
Ross “misrepresented the full rationale for the reinstatement of the citizenship question” during two appearances before House committees in March 2018, a letter from the department watchdog to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney, both Democrats from New York.
Inspector General Peggy Gustafson said her office presented its investigation to the public integrity section of the DOJ’s criminal division, but the matter was declined for prosecution.
The Biden Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the inspector general’s letter.
DOJ won’t prosecute ex-Trump Commerce chief Ross for misleading Congress on census question
This is really bad:
A federal judge on Monday handed down an eight-month prison term to the first person to be sentenced for a felony in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach, after attorneys argued whether the punishment would divide the country, deter future threats to lawmakers, or lead hundreds of other charged to face trial or plead guilty.
Tampa crane operator Paul Allard Hodgkins, 38, pleaded guilty last month to one count of obstructing a joint session of Congress meeting to confirm the results of the 2020 president election. He was seen carrying a red-and-white “Trump 2020” flag into the well of the abandoned Senate while others stood over the vacated vice president’s chair.
“The symbolism of that act was unmistakable,” U.S. District Judge Randolph D. Moss said. “He was staking a claim on the floor of the U.S. Senate not with an American flag, but declaring his loyalty to a single individual over the nation. In that act, he captured the threat to democracy that we all witnessed that day.”
Moss said the Capitol riots caused damage far greater than the few hours of delay in Congress’s tallying of the electoral votes, saying it “left a stain that will remain on our nation for decades.”
“It means it will be harder for all of us to tell our children and grandchildren that democracy stands as the immutable foundation of our nation. It means we are all fearful of the next attack in a way we never were, and it makes us question whether our democracy is less secure than we believed just months ago,” Moss said, calling the harms “enormous” and “chilling.”
***
U.S. prosecutors had called for 18-month prison term, citing the need to deter domestic terrorism.“Jan. 6 was genuinely an act of terrorism … The need to preserve respect for the law is really at its pinnacle in a crime like this,” Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mona Sedky said.
The sentencing capped a dramatic 2½ -hour argument in which Hodgkins attorney Patrick N. Leduc blasted the government’s terrorism claim and warned that a harsh sentence would further divide the nation. Leduc urged Moss to heed the words in Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address and show grace that each side of the partisan divide would claim for itself and deny the other.
Calling the Capitol breach “domestic terrorism” is “offensive and gaslighting the country, and it needs to stop … It was a protest that became a riot, period, full stop,” Leduc said.
The lawyer attempted to liken the Jan. 6 riot to violence that marred some racial justice protests in 2020 in Minneapolis and Portland, Ore., and invoke the First Amendment, arguing to the judge, “We need to be very careful.”
Eight months??? Ridiculous!

I don’t think we can unless we combine them both into a single bigger bill. I don’t know what the rules are for reconciliation, but I thought it was artificially limited to only 1 bill a year, and we got a second one this year specifically for some reason.

If the reservoirs behind Glen Canyon and Hoover Dam fall below dead pool levels, the power grid for the Southwest is in real trouble. Las Vegas essentially ceases to exist as a functional city. When they built the dams, they assumed a far wetter climate than it turned out to be. Now, we’re seeing the consequences of desertification and more extreme weather events, including extreme heat and drought. Too many people, and not enough water.
That’s a bad mix. And that’s the future.

Most people who were picked up and dumped into prison for eight months would lose their jobs; if they had a house, they’d lose it, they might lose their spouse, and they’d come out with (in this case) a felony conviction on their permanent record. You might wish it were longer, but it’s really not a tap on the risk. (Someone pointed out downstairs that similar offenses frequently get no time at all for a first offense.)

Huge data leak shatters lie that the innocent need not fear surveillance #Pegasus follow the story in @guardian https://t.co/OQYeUfzeWy

The Pegasus story is important reading: it’s an attack that needs no input from the user, and (at least for iOS) uses a broken part of iMessage to take root access of the phone and disappear after a reboot.
What annoys me is the editorializing: who the hell thinks that “the innocent not fear surveillance?” The entire political spectrum thinks their phones are being snooped, even though in most cases their government doesn’t give a shit what they do.
Also, the “Edward Snowden was right!” part. Yes, governments can and will monitor what intelligence sources they are able to penetrate, thanks for the big fucking insight. And you may notice that in the list of countries that have been spying on human rights activists and journalists, one major nation seems to be missing (hint: rhymes with Excited Snakes of Jessica). Snowden’s still a traitor taking refuge in a country that is one of the worst offenders in spying on civilians, however they want to whitewash him.
re: #156 ericblair
The government doesn’t have the time or ability to suss through petabytes of data being communicated on a daily basis to care who’s diddling whom, who’s taking out the trash, who’s doing what. They have more important things, and focus on national security threats - and communicating with foreign entities/persons of interest opens the door to see your comms swept up.
Don’t communicate with someone who is a foreign person of interest? Then you have nothing to worry about.
I really wish I could say I was surprised. I took a long cycle ride through the area this afternoon and there were countless Trump 2020 flags still being displayed along with more than a few anti-Biden, illegitimate president, etc. signs.
My personal favorite was the sign demanding that Biden-Harris resign for “bearing false witness against thy neighbor” (assuming that’s either Russia or the impeachment).
What alternate universe do these people live in that Biden is a liar and Trump, a man who never met a falsehood he wouldn’t pump if it served his purpose, is the upright exemplar? It truly boggles my mind at how baked-in these myths and beliefs are. Nothing will ever convince them and bring them back to a place where constructive dialog and compromise is possible.

No, they’re just morons. Once upon a time, the reporters who showed up at Washington press briefings would have been people, mostly alcoholic men, who’d spent a lifetime in journalism, often working themselves up from copy boy to beat writer to someone with aspirations of getting a regular byline. In the process, they honed their chops and learned their subject area. Now, they’re just meatheads. I’m trying to remember which journalism movie it was (I think it was the one where the female co-lead was scandalized to discover that I want to say Richard Gere had done multiple takes of an interview in which he pretended to shed tears over something he was talking about), but at some point, the grizzled veteran is having to baby the talent through breaking news, because the guy in front of the camera doesn’t have an actual clue what the context is.

“Put George Washington in this test tube for me. … Can’t?” - You seem to be unaware of DNA testing, which has been proposed to solve possible (slave) descendants of GW. And if needed we could dig up GW and test his DNA directly. So yes, we can put George in a test tube.

re: #257 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
George and Martha never had children. so,
a) she was infertile
b) he was; or
c) they didn’t have sex.
Do we know which?
I know Jefferson’s descendants via Sally Hemmings have been DNA’d.
re: #260 sagehen
But George had close relatives. So if George had children out of wedlock (with a slave), that child’s descendants will show up as cousins to the descendants of George’s close family.
I know Jefferson’s descendants via Sally Hemmings have been DNA’d.
Those tests support the conclusions reached, but DNA tests are not “proof” of direct descendance. The DNA evidence adds to the historical evidence to reach the conclusion, which still can never be 100% certain.

I think Martha had already had children with her first husband, so the “fault” was with George (attributed, as I recall, to the possible after-effects of smallpox).
re: #260 sagehen
Oh, and Martha had children by her first marriage. The wikipedia entry suggests her last child may have damaged her enough so she couldn’t have more children, but I think that is sort of unlikely (but I guess possible.)

Figuring out 18th century family history is often challenging.
I have several 18th century brick walls in my genealogy that don’t lend themselves well to typical research.
The reality is most information about the past is lost quickly.
This is why I’m so skeptical of those who claim to be so certain about something that happened centuries ago.
