How much COVID misinformation is on Facebook? Its execs don’t want to know | Ars Technica

For years, misinformation has flourished on Facebook. Falsehoods, misrepresentations, and outright lies posted on the site have shaped the discourse on everything from national politics to public health.

But despite their role in facilitating communications for billions of people, Facebook executives refused to commit resources to understand the extent to which COVID-19-related misinformation pervaded its platform, according to a report in The New York Times.

[…]

It’s unclear why Facebook isn’t sharing information about its efforts to fight misinformation. The company has surveyed its users about vaccine acceptance—Facebook says 85 percent “have been or want to be vaccinated”—and it says it has taken down 18 million pieces of misinformation related to COVID-19 since the pandemic began. That’s about 40,000 pieces of content per day.

Perhaps Facebook hasn’t shared those details because it’s not confident in its own approach. Without a more comprehensive view of how misinformation spreads on Facebook, it’s probably extraordinarily difficult to devise an effective counteroffensive. Removing 18 million pieces of content isn’t nothing, but it’s likely an insignificant number given that back in 2012, when Facebook had less than half the users it has today, the company said it processed 2.5 billion pieces of content per day.

A vaccination anecdote: last week a good friend told me that a mutual acquaintance, a a Trumpster who is immune-compromised, was not vaccinated. When my friend and I discussed her the other day, I discovered we had a misunderstanding about what had happened. My friend explained in more detail: Our acquaintance had indeed gotten two shots (Pfizer maybe) but her response was not protective at all. The doctor then administered a third shot and she had finally exhibited a healthy response. Maybe this approach will be successful with others who are immune-compromised but are eligible to receive the vaccine.

Olympic COVID bubble already “broken” with 71 cases, 3 in athlete village | Ars Technica

The number of COVID-19 cases linked to the Tokyo Olympics has risen to 71, with at least three cases confirmed within the Olympic Village that is housing athletes, according to reports out of Japan.

At least one public health expert says the rising case count indicates that the protective COVID bubble designed around the games has already burst days before the international sporting event even starts.

Unless they’re cancelled, these Olympics will go down in history as one of humanity’s greatest blunders, almost like the Vajont Dam disaster.

The Justice Department charged Barrack, a longtime friend of former president Donald Trump, with failing to follow laws about registering for lobbying work related to his dealings with the United Arab Emirates. He joins a long list of Trump’s friends, associates and advisers who have faced criminal charges in recent years — some of whom were pardoned before Trump left office.

Not quite the same. 80 percent of the Olympic athletes are vaccinated; so the results are not as likely to be so dire as when the “Spanish” flu swept through the population in 1918.

I think the games should have been canceled, because they were essentially forced on Tokyo despite protestations from the public at large. Whether there it is a significant blunder depends greatly on vaccination rates among the athletes. What we aren’t hearing is whether the positives are athletes (or support staff) who have been vaccinated. If the overwhelming majority of the athletes, coaching staffs, support crew, etc. etc. are vaccinated (and it would be really dumb if vaccinations weren’t required—but we live in the stupidest timeline, so….), it shouldn’t be a huge deal even if there are some breakthrough infections.

We’ll see. Regardless of vaccination and infection rates among the athletes and support, they’re all going back to their home countries in a month, where vaccination rates are probably very low. This could be a bad worldwide superspreader event resulting in thousands of needless deaths.

As noted in that MedCram video, the vaccines are highly effective, even against the Delta variant.

And Dr. Seheult pointed out at the end, all the people in his hospital who have come in are the unvaccinated.

Maybe Murdoch just added up the numbers - if there is another peak this fall/winter in the US (from the Delta variant) and the majority of Fox News viewers are unvaccinated, then Fox will be noticeably down viewers and likely also implicated by more and more people in harming the US.

Near the end of the MedCram video Dr. Seheult puts up a map of the US by county, showing where low vaccination rates correspond with current increases in cases. And yes, the locations are the usual suspects.

Oregon Bootleg Fire: Evacuations as largest US fire burns 364,000 acres | Yahoo! News

In the US state of Oregon, the nation’s largest active wildfire has burned through more than 364,000 acres, prompting thousands of evacuations.

Over 2,000 firefighters are tackling the so-called Bootleg Fire - one of the largest blazes in Oregon’s history.

Since starting on 6 July, it has already scorched an area larger than the city of Los Angeles.

[…]

Wildfires have already torn through more than 1.2m acres of the country this year, mainly in western states, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

More than 4,000 blazes have been recorded by the organisation so far in 2021, which is almost double last year’s total.

The state Senate voted 26-12 along party lines Tuesday to override Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards’ veto of a bill banning female transgender athletes from participating in girls and women’s sports.

The vote came after a group of trans activists were forcibly removed by security after they attempted to drop a banner.

The bill easily passed the House and Senate this spring, but Edwards vetoed it on June 22, the final day of the legislative session. That bill and another that would let people carry concealed guns without a permit were the main two bills that drew legislators to vote to hold a veto override session for the first time in recent history.

Two-thirds of the members of both the Senate and the House are required to override those vetoes or any other. The transgender athlete bill will now go to the House, where it will need 70 votes for an override.

Just got the news that my nephew, who, through circumstances I have never met, has gotten a severe case of Covid 19. Last Saturday he was admitted into the ICU and immediately placed on a respirator. Sunday he was placed into an induced coma. Today’s report is that he is doing OK in the coma. He’s in his late 30’s.

On top of that, his wife and four kids are also infected with Covid, though not as severely.

Do you think they were vaccinated? (First guess doesn’t count.)

All of NYC, all 5 boroughs added together, is 302 sq miles.

And somehow, we fit more than 8.4 million people in there.
13 congressional districts.

I went a looked up the size of Dallas County: 909 sq miles 2.65m people.

Used to be on Methotrexate due to an autoimmune disorder, if the vaccine isn’t living, should be okay in that circumstance and doses, but you do need to keep an eye on developing a fever and other symptoms. So check with yer whitecoat, and even more so if you are on Methotrexate for other reasons than to thwap your immune system because of an autoimmune disorder, and what the proper SOP to take a vaccine is in your situation.

Not quite the same. 80 percent of the Olympic athletes are vaccinated; so the results are not as likely to be so dire as when the “Spanish” flu swept through the population in 1918.

Apparently most of the Japanese Olympic staff are not fully vaccinated (only one shot of two). So there is a very real possibility that a variant could still jump into the Olympic athlete population, or, conversely, into the Japanese public, which is seriously undervaccinated.

Pentagon watchdog to review ‘nuclear football’ safety procedures after January 6 incident | CNN

The Department of Defense inspector general is launching a review of the Pentagon’s and White House’s ability to keep the “nuclear football” secure during a crisis, following an incident on January 6 when rioters came within 100 feet of the backup “football.”

The inspector general will evaluate the policies and procedures around the Presidential Emergency Satchel, also known as the “nuclear football,” in the event that it is “lost, stolen, or compromised,” according to an announcement from the DoD IG’s office.

The “nuclear football” stays close to the president at all times. There is a backup “football” that stays close to the vice president in the event that the president is unable to carry out his nuclear launch responsibilities. The briefcase contains equipment and decision-making papers that the president or, in the event the president is not able to, the vice president needs to authenticate orders for and to launch a nuclear strike.

Blue state Illinois went from a low of 222 on June 23 to 811 on on July 19. Still significantly below the percentage rise in Florida and down over 93% from its height. But a concern that even here where the state is trying to do the right thing there is a significant rise in cases. The governor has not yet re-imposed any kind of mask mandate, given the positivity rate is less than 2%, but still triple its level two weeks ago. And going in the wrong direction. But deaths remain low and if that holds, it may indicate more people with less serious cases. So holding our collective breath here.

White House has held talks with Fox News over its Covid-19 coverage | CNN

There have been regular, high-level conversations between the White House and Fox News regarding their coverage of the pandemic and vaccines, a source familiar with the talks tells CNN.

News of the discussions comes as one of the network’s stars, Sean Hannity, urged his audience to “please take Covid seriously” on Monday night.

The person who confirmed the conversations cautioned there has been no singular conversation that has played a role in Fox’s coverage of Covid-19. Throughout the pandemic, officials have regularly reached out to Fox News about their Covid-19 coverage. While White House officials often reach out to television networks and other news outlets about their coronavirus coverage, but this outreach is notable given Fox News’ past coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed on Tuesday that White House officials are in regular contact with Fox News.

re: #137 danarchy

I’d say from these 2 graphs, one of the things they are finding out is that the vaccines are incredibly effective at reducing deaths.

New cases of COVID-19 in the UK are about 99% Delta variant now compared to the US where it’s about 50% or so. The epidemiological modellers at Imperial College London were predicting case numbers in the UK of about 50,000 a day, maybe more with worst-case estimates of 100,000 cases a day by August based on the high transmissibility of this variant. So far they’ve been pretty much spot-on although they will not reply to my emails asking them for next week’s Euromillions lottery numbers.

Vaccination takeup in the UK (67% of adults fully vaccinated, another 23% have received first dose) is keeping people out of hospital and the morgue and those who do end up in hospital spend less time there with fewer of them ending up in ICU. It’s still a bad situation but compared to the death toll and hospital crowding during the winter it’s considered ‘manageable’. The sad reality is that people here in the UK aren’t willing to remain in lockdown any longer and there aren’t enough police to enforce the social restrictions required to seriously reduce the spread of the Delta variant.

MTG and Cawthorn Monroe add nothing to our political discourse. It is the legacy of the Trump years that reporters turn to them for the outrageous as an easy way to score a story. It’s sick.

Teen reported being sexually assaulted at Liberty University camp — and the school said she was to blame: lawsuit

“A 15-year-old reported being sexually assaulted at a Liberty University camp, according to a lawsuit, but university police blamed her for violating the ‘Liberty Way’ and needlessly had her strip naked and spread her butt cheeks for a photograph,” WSET writes.

Had an acquaintance tell me that she was booted from Liberty several decades ago because she violated the “Liberty Way” by going to a movie with a friend.

Her infractions? From what I recall is that the movie they went to see wasn’t on the approved list, she left campus without the proper permission, she was a freshman on a “date” without the proper upper classmen chaperones (it wasn’t a date date), and he was of a different race.

Sounds like forcing women to spread their butt cheeks to be photographed is the “Liberty Way.”

So she was sexually assaulted twice, initially, and then as punishment for reporting it.

OT: I am in a lousy mood this evening. I got a letter from PGW (Philadelphia Gas Works) telling me that they need to come into my house to check the gas meter. Last year it was the pipes. They have to replace said meter and it will take 30 minutes. The last time they have to fix something in my house I was left with no gas service for several weeks. I do not need this nightmare to happen again. They are supposed to replace the meter on Saturday between 4pm and 8pm. If they do anything different the video will be put on the internet.

I wonder how they’re doing in all the little pop. 200 farm towns.

In the UK in rural places like the Scottish islands, age-18+ adults are 100% vaccinated, just about. It’s the big cities that are lagging in percentage terms. The reason is that the various health authorities prioritised the oldest members of the population for vaccines and rural communities tend towards older populations. The logistics of setting up clinics on, say, the Shetland Isles or isolated villages in the Highlands meant they vaccinated everyone regardless of age in one pass rather than only vaccinate the elderly then come back later for younger people.

Conversely the cities and urban areas are magnets for young people, students etc. who only started qualifying for vaccination appointments a couple of months ago after all the older folks received their vaccinations. They also have the Young Immortal mindset with the idea that COVID-19 will just bounce off their youthful immune system and they don’t have Frequent Flyer status with their local General Practitioner’s surgery like us old crumblies to remind them That All Flesh Is Grass. This means they’re in no hurry to get a needle in their arms.

I’d say from these 2 graphs, one of the things they are finding out is that the vaccines are incredibly effective at reducing deaths.

Scotland, which has not relaxed its standards, asks that we all replace “United Kingdom” with “England” in these discussions.

Interesting! I doubt it’s going so well in my home state’s smaller communities.
