I’d heard it said that Schumer was who all the other senators and White House people went to for Hamilton tickets, and I just assumed it was because he’s the NY senator so of course he’s the Broadway hookup. No, that’s wrong. He’s not a hookup for any other shows, just Hamilton.

So I watched “Siempre Luis”, the documentary Lin-Manuel Miranda produced about his dad. Turns out, Luis Miranda was interested in politics back in PR, then when he came to grad school in NYC he made it a hobby to do voter registration for the Puerto Ricans in NYC…

After Reagan’s 1986 Amnesty, Luis became the political organizer for all the Spanish-speaking new citizens in the city. Dominicans, Panamanians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Luis was the go-to Latin Whisperer for big campaigns… he was critical to Schumer winning his 1998 Senate race (against Al D’Amato).

So Schumer is the Senate’s most enthusiastic pro-immigration and pro-PRstatehood senator, and he can get Hamilton tickets whenever he needs to grease a senator or a cabinet official or a third assistant undersecretary or whoever…

I always love how, as soon as I tell a guest that there’s no way I can extend their room another day and the only rooms available are too expensive, magically things start breaking in their room. Been here for days with no problems, but as soon as they might have to go looking for another hotel, they suddenly start having issues in the room that need “compensation.”

We saw the same shit in ‘09, the “institutionalists” who argued for allowing crimes to go unpunished if only to preserve the institutions. The argument being that if you held accountable those who had abused the powers of the institution, then the people would lose faith in the institution and might even demand greater accountability and reform.

It’s the “Good German” problem, the reality that most of the guys who are still around are the ones who managed to make it for four years by quietly signing off on whatever abuses of the law and regs that the last wannabe dictator put on their desks.

If you hold everybody who participated accountable then you have nobody left to run things, but by not doing so you also make it almost a guarantee that it will happen again. So instead we get these empty promises of “doing better” and pointless talk about “never again.”

Right-wing religious radio host Sandy Rios may have gone to CPAC with Covid-19, where she broadcast her Christian hate radio show.

I do want to tell you that a week ago today I took my husband to the emergency room at the hospital. I was worried sick, he was not breathing. He was in really difficult circumstances. We were told that he did have COVID pneumonia. He was fighting for his life.

So you can imagine what this week was like. Saturday I was able to bring Bruce home. He’s home on oxygen. And yes, if you want to know if I had COVID, yes I tested positive as well. I guess that’s why I’ve been sick so many weeks.

We just thought - our grandchildren are here with us - they went to vacation bible school and came home sick. We immediately caught whatever they had - we just thought it was what kids bring home, some kind of virus.

Thank you, Jesus. That’s all I can say, thank you, Jesus. You might say, ‘Well, does this change you mind about vaccines?” I just have to be honest with you, I’m not ready to declare anything yet.

He was acquitted on charges of sexual harassment but (honorably) discharged on a lesser charge of destroying evidence (to cover up a crime he did not commit?) and allowed him to keep his seniority and pension.

But they were able to claim that they were “cracking down” on sexual harassment.

A Panhandle mosquito trap site has recently collected mosquitoes positive with the West Nile virus.

These are the first confirmed positive mosquitoes in Nebraska.

Multiple locations across Nebraska are routinely monitoring sites to trap and test mosquitoes over the summer months.

At this time, there have been no human cases of West Nile detected.

I was raised on Michigan mosquitos and black flies.

Mosquitos in the Panhandle tend to be near the North Platte River, Pumpkin Creek, or irrigation canals, since everything else here is Sandhills desert.

Irrigation canals generally run alongside the North Platte River, built since the area was settled by ranchers and farmers to expand watered land more than a few feet from the river.

My town however has the Beerline Canal running through it (and right by my house) into the Sandhills, so we have nice close stagnant water to breed mosquitos.

For whatever it’s worth though, my house abstract and deed note we have perpetual unlimited drawing rights from the Beerline Canal “for drinking and other purposes.”

I’ll pass on drinking from the canal, but who knows, perhaps those water rights might be worth something some day.

Have you met Manitoba deer flies? They land on you and you have 3 seconds before they bite, and it hurts. They were easy to kill if you were fast you wouldn’t get bit. I had one chase me at a full run 1/4 mile out into Lake Manitoba before he gave up. It was still ankle deep, heh.

Looking up local rivers in reference to West Nile Virus above, I had to edit the Wikipedia article on Pumpkin Creek.

For some reason, the first line said it flows through Banner, Knox, and Morrill Counties.

Knox County is on the other side of the state. That would be a weird jump for a fifty mile long creek.

I removed the offending county. Let’s see if some editor who doesn’t live here reverses my removal. (Pumpkin Creek empties into the North Platte River a few miles west of my town.)

You’ll be pleased to know that Marge Three Names in California on Sunday declared all churches except the wingnut one she was in politicking as “dead.”

I’m sure Christians across the land are copacetic with her assessment of their churches, and are going to get right on calling her out over that.

Greene made her remarks in a speech to 412 Murrieta Church in Murrieta, California.

The church, led by Pastor Tim Thompson, recently hosted sermons on “the sin of homosexuality” and referred to activism against climate change as “the sin of earth worship.”

The church has also attacked vaccination from COVID-19, with the video of the sermon against vaccination now removed from YouTube for violating that site’s community guidelines.

In May of 2020, the church held services at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in violation of state regulations enacted to stop the spread of the virus.

In a video interview with the Sacramento Bee, Thompson stood in front of a banner depicting California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom as Adolph Hitler and compared Newsom’s pandemic policies to Nazi Germany.

“In some ways, I think the banner with him wearing his Hitler mustache, it is appropriate,” said Thompson.

On Sunday, Greene praised 412 Murrieta for their conservative activism but lamented that other Christian churches have not followed their model.

The Texas Voter Confidence Act authorizes the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House to select an independent third party to conduct the election audit. The forensic audit would focus on the votes cast in the 13 most populous counties in Texas, which include both Republican and Democrat strongholds.

‘We need a forensic audit to uncover all the voter fraud,’ said Rep. Toth. ‘Prior to the special session, I met with constituents across District 15 in South Montgomery County. The Texas Voter Confidence Act is a product of those meetings and a direct request from the voters who sent me to Austin. I was raised on Michigan mosquitos and black flies.

Mosquitos in the Panhandle tend to be near the North Platte River, Pumpkin Creek, or irrigation canals, since everything else here is Sandhills desert.

Irrigation canals generally run alongside the North Platte River, built since the area was settled by ranchers and farmers to expand watered land more than a few feet from the river.

My town however has the Beerline Canal running through it (and right by my house) into the Sandhills, so we have nice close stagnant water to breed mosquitos.

For whatever it’s worth though, my house abstract and deed note we have perpetual unlimited drawing rights from the Beerline Canal “for drinking and other purposes.”

I’ll pass on drinking from the canal, but who knows, perhaps those water rights might be worth something some day.

Tricky thing with those water rights is that a larger force further down the priority list might well decide to lawyer you into oblivion if you decided to press those rights. (My brother-in-law’s former ranch on the Yampa River upstream from Steamboat Springs had an irrigation canal (usually with the gate closed) that had a very high priority for water if desired. He said that he really didn’t need it and the neighbors further along the canal were apparently not interested in drawing from it either. And he said that during the drought in the 2000s where the Yampa’s level was of concern that trying to use it might well draw unwelcome attention from users further downstream. (His two pastures close to the canal and river stayed pretty green and one was downright wet at one end due to a dike on the river that leaked slightly. Plus he had a spring on the bluff that kept a couple of water troughs full. And he wasn’t going to pump water uphill and attempt to irrigate any of the upper pastures.)

I’m not going to worry too much about the water rights to the Beerline Canal, though the only people who can actually access it are people in the village and a couple ranches and farms at the end of the canal in the Sandhills.

The North Platte River feeds the canal (when the gates are open … they are usually opened to drain the canal when we get too much rain).

The North Platte River is actually a cut into the Ogallala Aquifer, so the level of the river is the level of the water in the aquifer (unless Wyoming opens dams for snowfall runoff like they are now and the river runs high).

The state tightly regulates withdrawals from the aquifer (right now we are actually above average here).

Over in Banner County, Pumpkin Creek is the only water source. Withdrawals from the creek reduced the flow (along with unregulated drilling of water wells next to the creek) by about 80%, causing the state to condemn a bunch of wells and prohibit new drilling.

The creek is the only water source in Banner County.

PornHub is starting a new series of videos where porn actors and actresses will recreate living versions of famous artworks held in world-class museums such as the Louvre or the Met.

They say they are imagining what the artists were imagining when they painted works of women or men who were fully or partially nude.

Predictably, those museums holding the artworks are outraged, and several have sent cease-and-desist letters to PornHub. They are threatening to sue under copyright laws (I am not sure how you can own a copyright to a painting created in the XVI Century, but IANAL).

For its part, PornHub argues their works are covered by US law regarding derivative works, parody, satire, and fair use.

One of the things that people are going to have to get dialectic about is…death cults are full of people that don’t really think they signed up to die, think they’re doing something good, right up until the moment it’s too late and “choosing to die” suddenly twists into “being compelled to die if not murdered.”

It’s the difference between the Jonestown narrative—hundreds of people that can be mocked because they were sheepishly compliant—and the reality of Jonestown—people that had moved there because they trusted an institution that betrayed their trusts, terrorized them for months, and pointed weapons at them to make them drink cyanide.

The former is morbid but perversely comforting. How many people have been quarantined in hotels in Australia? Of that number, how many have been infected? Since they were there because they might have been exposed to covid, how do they know they didn’t already have it?

A legislative committee in the Republican-led Missouri General Assembly actually went about holding an invite-only hearing on how race is taught in schools without including a single Black parent or educator, according to NBC-affiliated KSHB-TV. The hearing on Monday only featured the voices of those who oppose critical race theory, a framework for interpreting law that maintains racism has an undeniable effect on the legal foundation of American society. One of the invited guests who got a chance to testify was Katie Rash, who leads Missouri’s chapter of the political group No Left Turn in Education, KSHB reported. “Some students are having serious emotional problems dealing with the CRT, or social justice, concepts being taught in our schools,” Rash said.

Heather Fleming, a former teacher and diversity and inclusion trainer, told KSHB she wasn’t allowed to testify and that legislators were “talking about us, without us.” “What not having any African Americans in the room really showed was that this wasn’t really about understanding,” Fleming said. Missouri NAACP President Rod Chapel called the display of privilege “ridiculous,” “excluding the very people who are saying we’ve been treated inequitably.”

Well started tonight’s dinner. A 1 lb rump roast. The roast is currently in the fridge marinating in a 1/2 cup beef broth and a 1/2 cup red (Merlot) wine after being rubbed down with some seasoning salt. I’ll sear and pop it into the slow cooker here in an hour along with the veggies and let it simmer for about 6 hours.

Oh, and that bit about Japanese flags is true. The only place I saw several Japanese flags (as opposed to none everywhere else) was at a historic (not now in use) onsen in southern Japan. Our tour guide made a point of saying, basically, “This use of flags is *unusual*” and he was right.

Well, I am back. Did I miss anything exciting?

Springfield Il is a good place for a pair of history nuts to be tourists together. Great Lincoln museums and a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright house. Plus lots of nice restaurants (mmm chicken tikka masala! )

Interesting tidbit: this was the longest time we have ever spent together. It went …very well. 😎

I am so glad you got to visit some of my favorite places! (The Lincoln Home and the FLW house just a couple of blocks and 50 years apart!)
