LYRICS:

Ever since the world’s existed
There’s one thing that is certain
There are those who build walls
And those who open doors
Ah but this my love I’m thinking you already knew
For some it’s always winter
While others have the spring
Some people find good fortune
While others never find a thing
Ah but this my love is something you already knew
That’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
I’m going to say that again
Because I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
Of what use is the moon if you don’t have the night?
Of what use is a windmill with no Quixote left who’ll fight?
Ah but this my love is something you already knew
At some point on the horizon
Sky can be confused with earth
Some people dream of God
While others dream of wealth
But of course my love this is what you see out on the street
It’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
Let me say that again
Because I know that we both know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
Ever since the world’s existed
There’s one thing that is certain
Some people build walls
Others open doors

I’d heard it said that Schumer was who all the other senators and White House people went to for Hamilton tickets, and I just assumed it was because he’s the NY senator so of course he’s the Broadway hookup. No, that’s wrong. He’s not a hookup for any other shows, just Hamilton.

So I watched “Siempre Luis”, the documentary Lin-Manuel Miranda produced about his dad. Turns out, Luis Miranda was interested in politics back in PR, then when he came to grad school in NYC he made it a hobby to do voter registration for the Puerto Ricans in NYC…

After Reagan’s 1986 Amnesty, Luis became the political organizer for all the Spanish-speaking new citizens in the city. Dominicans, Panamanians, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Luis was the go-to Latin Whisperer for big campaigns… he was critical to Schumer winning his 1998 Senate race (against Al D’Amato).

So Schumer is the Senate’s most enthusiastic pro-immigration and pro-PRstatehood senator, and he can get Hamilton tickets whenever he needs to grease a senator or a cabinet official or a third assistant undersecretary or whoever…

I always love how, as soon as I tell a guest that there’s no way I can extend their room another day and the only rooms available are too expensive, magically things start breaking in their room. Been here for days with no problems, but as soon as they might have to go looking for another hotel, they suddenly start having issues in the room that need “compensation.”

We saw the same shit in ‘09, the “institutionalists” who argued for allowing crimes to go unpunished if only to preserve the institutions. The argument being that if you held accountable those who had abused the powers of the institution, then the people would lose faith in the institution and might even demand greater accountability and reform.

It’s the “Good German” problem, the reality that most of the guys who are still around are the ones who managed to make it for four years by quietly signing off on whatever abuses of the law and regs that the last wannabe dictator put on their desks.

If you hold everybody who participated accountable then you have nobody left to run things, but by not doing so you also make it almost a guarantee that it will happen again. So instead we get these empty promises of “doing better” and pointless talk about “never again.”

Right-wing religious radio host Sandy Rios may have gone to CPAC with Covid-19, where she broadcast her Christian hate radio show.

I do want to tell you that a week ago today I took my husband to the emergency room at the hospital. I was worried sick, he was not breathing. He was in really difficult circumstances. We were told that he did have COVID pneumonia. He was fighting for his life.

So you can imagine what this week was like. Saturday I was able to bring Bruce home. He’s home on oxygen. And yes, if you want to know if I had COVID, yes I tested positive as well. I guess that’s why I’ve been sick so many weeks.

We just thought - our grandchildren are here with us - they went to vacation bible school and came home sick. We immediately caught whatever they had - we just thought it was what kids bring home, some kind of virus.

Thank you, Jesus. That’s all I can say, thank you, Jesus. You might say, ‘Well, does this change you mind about vaccines?” I just have to be honest with you, I’m not ready to declare anything yet.

(more at Joe My God)

It’s a real shame she interviewed Sen. Marsha Blackburn (TN), Rep. Mo Brooks (Ala.) and Matt Schlapp for her radio show at CPAC.

Well, that’s convenient. Self-proclaimed “prophet” Johnny Enlow says God has stopped revealing his plan to put Trump back in office because he doesn’t want the enemy to hear about it: “It would literally mess up strategy of how the Lord is doing it.”

So he is admitting that all Prophets are good for is to mess up God’s Plans.

These people are amazing. On the other hand, they know that their marks are not big on thinking things through, just believing.

Which is what makes the attempts at cover-ups so comical if they generally weren’t so tragic, because systems that demand absolute loyalty to the guy above you make it hard as fuck to blame the guys below you when some major scandal goes public.

They eventually pick out someone at mid-level and toss them under the bus. The US military did that when sexual harrassment charges were really starting to affect female enlistment.

They selected the Sergeant Major of the Army - the highest-ranking enlisted man in the Army. Not so low that they would seem to be picking on the rank-and-file, but not high up enough to make it seem that it was condoned behavior by officers.

He was acquitted on charges of sexual harassment but (honorably) discharged on a lesser charge of destroying evidence (to cover up a crime he did not commit?) and allowed him to keep his seniority and pension.

But they were able to claim that they were “cracking down” on sexual harassment.

One of the tackiest show trials since the Stalin era.

West Nile confirmed in the Panhandle (KSID-AM, Sidney, Nebr.)

A Panhandle mosquito trap site has recently collected mosquitoes positive with the West Nile virus.

These are the first confirmed positive mosquitoes in Nebraska.

Multiple locations across Nebraska are routinely monitoring sites to trap and test mosquitoes over the summer months.

At this time, there have been no human cases of West Nile detected.

I was raised on Michigan mosquitos and black flies.

Mosquitos in the Panhandle tend to be near the North Platte River, Pumpkin Creek, or irrigation canals, since everything else here is Sandhills desert.

Irrigation canals generally run alongside the North Platte River, built since the area was settled by ranchers and farmers to expand watered land more than a few feet from the river.

My town however has the Beerline Canal running through it (and right by my house) into the Sandhills, so we have nice close stagnant water to breed mosquitos.

For whatever it’s worth though, my house abstract and deed note we have perpetual unlimited drawing rights from the Beerline Canal “for drinking and other purposes.”

I’ll pass on drinking from the canal, but who knows, perhaps those water rights might be worth something some day.

I presume they are related to Michigan deer flies. It’s like being bitten with a drill press.

Horseflies are a picnic compared to deer flies. Fortunately we have neither here.

On our trips to The Pas and Winnipeg, we’ve been fortunate not to run into deer flies.

Looking up local rivers in reference to West Nile Virus above, I had to edit the Wikipedia article on Pumpkin Creek.

For some reason, the first line said it flows through Banner, Knox, and Morrill Counties.

Knox County is on the other side of the state. That would be a weird jump for a fifty mile long creek.

I removed the offending county. Let’s see if some editor who doesn’t live here reverses my removal. (Pumpkin Creek empties into the North Platte River a few miles west of my town.)

You’ll be pleased to know that Marge Three Names in California on Sunday declared all churches except the wingnut one she was in politicking as “dead.”

I’m sure Christians across the land are copacetic with her assessment of their churches, and are going to get right on calling her out over that.

Oliver Willis gave some background on that.

Greene says ‘the church is basically dead’ in the US because it’s not right-wing enough (American Independent, July 19, 2021)

Greene made her remarks in a speech to 412 Murrieta Church in Murrieta, California.

The church, led by Pastor Tim Thompson, recently hosted sermons on “the sin of homosexuality” and referred to activism against climate change as “the sin of earth worship.”

The church has also attacked vaccination from COVID-19, with the video of the sermon against vaccination now removed from YouTube for violating that site’s community guidelines.

In May of 2020, the church held services at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in violation of state regulations enacted to stop the spread of the virus.

In a video interview with the Sacramento Bee, Thompson stood in front of a banner depicting California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom as Adolph Hitler and compared Newsom’s pandemic policies to Nazi Germany.

“In some ways, I think the banner with him wearing his Hitler mustache, it is appropriate,” said Thompson.

On Sunday, Greene praised 412 Murrieta for their conservative activism but lamented that other Christian churches have not followed their model.

I’m sure those churches will get right on calling out this church for comparing California’s policies to Nazi Germany, and violating the laws of the state.

Yup.

Any day now.

(Texas State) Rep Toth Introduces Bill To Audit 2020 Election (Woodlands Online, by Rep. Steve Toth)

But only the counties Joe Biden won in Texas.

Like other Republicans, he writes in the third person as Donald Trump does. He must obey his master.

AUSTIN, TX — Monday morning, State Representative Steve Toth (R-The Woodlands) announced that he had filed House Bill 241 to initiate a forensic audit of the 2020 general election. The Texas Voter Confidence Act authorizes the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House to select an independent third party to conduct the election audit. The forensic audit would focus on the votes cast in the 13 most populous counties in Texas, which include both Republican and Democrat strongholds.

‘We need a forensic audit to uncover all the voter fraud,’ said Rep. Toth. ‘Prior to the special session, I met with constituents across District 15 in South Montgomery County. The Texas Voter Confidence Act is a product of those meetings and a direct request from the voters who sent me to Austin. Texans want to know more about the claims of voter fraud and deserve to have confidence in their elections. The Office of the Attorney General has prosecuted over 500 election fraud cases and is investigating 400 more. Voters want to know that their legal vote counts and matters.’

Rep Toth’s legislation directs the audit to begin by November 1, 2021, and be completed by February 1, 2022.

‘Representative Toth’s proposed bill is timely and necessary with a view to exposing any instances of fraud during the 2020 election and reassuring Texas voters that their votes were accurately counted,’ said Mark J. Keough, County Judge for Montgomery County. ‘I fully support passage of this bill and look forward to the results of the audit.’

Argument over Bible verses leads to strangulation, murder charge

This is not actually a rare occurrence. Christians have shot, beaten children, and killed over the meaning or inability to recite Bible verses, or “misinterpreting” them.

The phenomenon is not limited to the South, any particular denomination, or factors like alcohol or drugs.

Which is what makes the attempts at cover-ups so comical if they generally weren’t so tragic, because systems that demand absolute loyalty to the guy above you make it hard as fuck to blame the guys below you when some major scandal goes public.

They just claim incompetence (“I didn’t know what subordinate was doing!”) and get forgiven by the media and party. The Chris Christie approach to Bridgegate.

It’s also the sort of outrageous, unhinged rambling that drives more people away from Christianity.

As repeated polling shows from respected religious polling outfits, more and more Christianity is identified as Republican. As Republicans continue to promote people like Lauren Bobert, Donald Trump, or Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and attack not-crazy Christians like Joe Biden or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, they hasten the demise of churches.

Even publishers like Charisma and Christianity Today have noted this, and when they do, they get attacked by their own readers and other Christians for not being Christian enough.

re: #53 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Tricky thing with those water rights is that a larger force further down the priority list might well decide to lawyer you into oblivion if you decided to press those rights. (My brother-in-law’s former ranch on the Yampa River upstream from Steamboat Springs had an irrigation canal (usually with the gate closed) that had a very high priority for water if desired. He said that he really didn’t need it and the neighbors further along the canal were apparently not interested in drawing from it either. And he said that during the drought in the 2000s where the Yampa’s level was of concern that trying to use it might well draw unwelcome attention from users further downstream. (His two pastures close to the canal and river stayed pretty green and one was downright wet at one end due to a dike on the river that leaked slightly. Plus he had a spring on the bluff that kept a couple of water troughs full. And he wasn’t going to pump water uphill and attempt to irrigate any of the upper pastures.)

And they overlook the fact that a lot of Latinos are religious, but that religion is Roman Catholicism. And these people are socially conservative in a lot of ways that the GOP ought to be able to appeal to. But they don’t

The racist, xenophobic aspect aside, Latinos’ sense of family extends to a sense of community: strong community institutions and schools, the sort of thing that the GOP would rather privatize or abolish.

I’m not going to worry too much about the water rights to the Beerline Canal, though the only people who can actually access it are people in the village and a couple ranches and farms at the end of the canal in the Sandhills.

The North Platte River feeds the canal (when the gates are open … they are usually opened to drain the canal when we get too much rain).

The North Platte River is actually a cut into the Ogallala Aquifer, so the level of the river is the level of the water in the aquifer (unless Wyoming opens dams for snowfall runoff like they are now and the river runs high).

The state tightly regulates withdrawals from the aquifer (right now we are actually above average here).

Over in Banner County, Pumpkin Creek is the only water source. Withdrawals from the creek reduced the flow (along with unregulated drilling of water wells next to the creek) by about 80%, causing the state to condemn a bunch of wells and prohibit new drilling.

The creek is the only water source in Banner County.

A firestorm has been ignited in Israel after Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will no longer be sold in Occupied Palestinian territory.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett calls it a boycott of Israel. Bennett warned Unilever their would be legal consequences.

bbc.com

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid called it “a shameful surrender to anti-Semitism and all that’s wrong with anti-Israel and anti-Jewish discourse.”

Mr. Lapid also called on the USA to take action for any state which has laws banning boycotts against Israel (that would be red states). Watch for that if you live in a Republican-run state with such laws prohibiting BDS.

Israel’s public broadcaster compared Ben & Jerry’s action to terrorism.

Left-wing US Jewish organisations are drawing a distinction between Israeli government actions regarding Palestine, Jews, and business decisions, while right-wing Jewish organisations are calling for a nationwide boycott in the USA. (BDS is apparently wrong for Israel, but fine for the USA.)

Benjamin Netanyahu said now Israelis know what ice cream not to buy.

Some kosher markets in the USA have removed Unilever products from their shelves.

Child cases of Covid-19 are rising as schools gear up to reopen. But vaccines for the youngest are still months away

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) said Tuesday more than 23,550 child cases of Covid were reported between July 8 and 15 — nearly double what was being reported in late June. Child age ranges vary by state, according to the group’s most recent report, with more than half of states defining children as anyone 19 or younger, and two states — Utah and Florida — limiting the range to anyone 14 or younger.

As for Utah, fifteen is the legal marriage age for girls.

The state with the highest marriage age is Nebraska (nineteen).

The earliest BDS laws in states date back to the Reagan Administration, when some Republican-run states passed anti-BDS laws in response to liberal boycotts of companies after the administration started cozying up to apartheid South Africa. The point of those laws was to prohibit American liberals boycotting the overtly racist nation’s products.

Other states passed laws when the BDS movement started against Israel over its continuing illegal settlements in Occupied Palestine, and accellerated over their modern version of the Berlin Wall.

The anti-BDS laws passed in support of racism in the Union of South Africa were repurposed to claim liberals are anti-Semites in boycotting illegal Israeli settlements.

In a vastly overpopulated world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge trans-national corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and by far the best-paid profession. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that the quality of life is improved by all the products placed on the market. Some of the products contain addictive substances designed to make consumers dependent on them. However, the most basic elements of life are incredibly scarce, including water and fuel.

On to a non-controversial topic we’ve been on for a couple days here (I had no part in fueling it /s):

Porn.

PornHub is starting a new series of videos where porn actors and actresses will recreate living versions of famous artworks held in world-class museums such as the Louvre or the Met.

They say they are imagining what the artists were imagining when they painted works of women or men who were fully or partially nude.

Predictably, those museums holding the artworks are outraged, and several have sent cease-and-desist letters to PornHub. They are threatening to sue under copyright laws (I am not sure how you can own a copyright to a painting created in the XVI Century, but IANAL).

For its part, PornHub argues their works are covered by US law regarding derivative works, parody, satire, and fair use.

re: #103 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

A similar theme is expressed by the book “Jennifer Government” (Wikipedia)

The theme of the book is a murder mystery in a world where government has been weakened to the point where corporations can run roughshod over them.

The largest military organisation on the planet is the National Rifle Association, which owns its own air force.

People’s last names are assigned as where they work, hence Jennifer (an FBI agent) is named Government.

After a teenage girl is murdered by unknown men in a Nike store in a mall, a family employs (by signing over the deed of their house) the FBI to try to track down who was responsible for a terrorist attack on a Nike store.

One of the nice things about having an accredited library in a town of 128 is I can get books by interlibrary loan.

The book is somewhat dated (the Soviet Union is still one of the principal powers, opposing the ultra-libertarian capitalist western nations), but a fine dystopian novel otherwise.

Louvre Calls in Lawyers Over Pornhub’s Hardcore Re-Enactments (Daily Beast, July 20, 2021)

ROME—Long before hairless strangers were streaming loveless sex to lonely device-wielders, European classic artists were painting scintillating scenes that were quite lewd even by today’s standards. At least that’s what Pornhub would like would-be adult-entertainment consumers to think as it launches its new “Show Me the Nudes” interactive website and app.

Classic masterpieces from some of Europe’s top museums are recreated by porn stars who then come to life, which in the case of Venus of Urbino—a centerpiece of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence—means Venus will suddenly start masturbating and, in the depiction of Male Nude, Degas’ celebrated dick pic featured at the Met quickly evolves into a full blow job.

Each recreation, performed by pornographic actors from the adult entertainment troupe My Sweet Apple, comes with an explanation that you won’t find in any art-history textbooks. “As a handy rule, anything you see in a classic nude painting that isn’t obviously kinky… is still definitely meant to represent something kinky,” the caption under Venus of Urbino claims.

This is an older article, but it lays out the thinking behind England’s “big gamble” on COVID-19.

For more than a year, personal freedoms have been curtailed to keep Covid at bay.

That looks likely to change, with ministers proposing to lift many of the remaining restrictions in England on 19 July. The details, set out on Monday, have sparked intense debate.

Prof Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, whose modelling led to the first lockdown, has said it is a gamble, but one worth taking.

What is unarguable is that the nature of the pandemic in the UK has changed - and with it so should many of our assumptions.

______________

“Covid will never go away,” says Prof Paul Hunter, from the University of East Anglia. “It’s inevitable that we’re going to catch it repeatedly for the rest of our lives, whether we have had the vaccine or not. The issues becomes not whether it is safe to lift all restrictions, but when would it be safest to do so.”

bbc.com

Basically, the British government is rolling the dice on the assumption that their generally high vaccination rates should do the trick and that COVID-19 is now - or will very soon become - an endemic disease, one that we’re just going to have to learn to live with…and accept the consequences that come with that (higher annual mortality rates, especially during cold and flu season, long COVID syndrome, etc.); these remarks were echoed yesterday in an interview with Czech PM Andrej Babiš, who seems to be of a similar mind. He’s planning on going all damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead sometime around the end of August or beginning of September (though he’s carefully watching what’s happening in the UK, by his own admission).

Whoa. I occasionally drop by newsmax to check up on the GOP party line as I will not even go near Fox, but this truly does surprise me.

The only thing I can think of is that the rightwing propaganda billionaires have finally realized that the freight train of the Delta variant is plowing right into their constituency.

I don’t think there was a real plan to make COVID denialism into wingnut orthodoxy, and that it was Trump’s mentally disordered reactions to the pandemic that made it that. Then, it was too useful to stop, even though it was killing wingnuts and non-wingnuts alike. Now, it’s dawned on them what they’ve created, but denialism has a life of its own.

Even if the MAGAts suddenly (literally) have a come-to-Jesus moment, it will take months to vaccinate the people who need to be, and that’s months that they don’t have. And I doubt they will, because that means that the libtards would have been right, which is the one thing they can never admit.

I Would Prefer Not To  Jul 21, 2021 • 8:37:40am

re: #107 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

The Author, Max Barry is awesome. I would highly recommend Lexicon.

I hate the Republican death cult so fucking much.

One of the things that people are going to have to get dialectic about is…death cults are full of people that don’t really think they signed up to die, think they’re doing something good, right up until the moment it’s too late and “choosing to die” suddenly twists into “being compelled to die if not murdered.”

It’s the difference between the Jonestown narrative—hundreds of people that can be mocked because they were sheepishly compliant—and the reality of Jonestown—people that had moved there because they trusted an institution that betrayed their trusts, terrorized them for months, and pointed weapons at them to make them drink cyanide.

The former is morbid but perversely comforting. The latter is just awful, that it’s never as simple as “person totally bad, death deserved.” Yeah, these people that are dying were threatening to the general welfare, but so much time and effort was put into making them that threat. It’s like their bones were broken and deliberately set crooked. People with power and money and clout have created this culture to preserve their status quo, and now they’re feeding their subordinates into the thresher. We’re not winning anything when these people die; the culture persists because it’s top-down structures persist.

Another highly prescient dystopia is Gary Shteyngart’s Super Sad True Love Story (2010)

The protagonist is one of the last people to own books, everyone else is semi-literate and communicates by emojis and video/voice messages on their Äppärät, which measures, regulates, and compares every aspect of your existence, health, personal, professional and financial history and that of everyone around you at a glance.

The US dollar has collapsed, and like post-Soviet Russian Rubles, is only good for basic necessities. If you want anything beyond that, you need to pay in Yuan or Northern Euro-backed currency.

West Nile is spread by mosquitoes. The best way to deal with West Nile is to remove any standing bodies of water. Key is *standing*—your local creek or river is fine, that persistent puddle in the hole in your driveway, maybe not.

I’m sure those churches will get right on calling out this church for comparing California’s policies to Nazi Germany, and violating the laws of the state.

Yup.

Any day now.

These people are ASSHOLES.

Here’s their statement of faith, which is normal fundamentalist bullshit up until point 15 (which is a comprehensive bash on anything outside of man on top married hetero sex), and if you didn’t get 15, 16 makes it clear they will do no gay marrying. Then there’s 17 which is their anti-vaccine statement. And then, finally, all the authorities at 412 Murrieta have to hold ALL these things as part of their faith.

Assholes, I said, assholes. Jesus didn’t tell them to do this.

A legislative committee in the Republican-led Missouri General Assembly actually went about holding an invite-only hearing on how race is taught in schools without including a single Black parent or educator, according to NBC-affiliated KSHB-TV. The hearing on Monday only featured the voices of those who oppose critical race theory, a framework for interpreting law that maintains racism has an undeniable effect on the legal foundation of American society. One of the invited guests who got a chance to testify was Katie Rash, who leads Missouri’s chapter of the political group No Left Turn in Education, KSHB reported. “Some students are having serious emotional problems dealing with the CRT, or social justice, concepts being taught in our schools,” Rash said.

Heather Fleming, a former teacher and diversity and inclusion trainer, told KSHB she wasn’t allowed to testify and that legislators were “talking about us, without us.” “What not having any African Americans in the room really showed was that this wasn’t really about understanding,” Fleming said. Missouri NAACP President Rod Chapel called the display of privilege “ridiculous,” “excluding the very people who are saying we’ve been treated inequitably.”

Well started tonight’s dinner. A 1 lb rump roast. The roast is currently in the fridge marinating in a 1/2 cup beef broth and a 1/2 cup red (Merlot) wine after being rubbed down with some seasoning salt. I’ll sear and pop it into the slow cooker here in an hour along with the veggies and let it simmer for about 6 hours.

Oh, and that bit about Japanese flags is true. The only place I saw several Japanese flags (as opposed to none everywhere else) was at a historic (not now in use) onsen in southern Japan. Our tour guide made a point of saying, basically, “This use of flags is *unusual*” and he was right.

I dunno, as a follower of Jesus, I find flag salutes and the US style of patriotism to be unsettlingly idolatrous and a ceremony of worship..

Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t do the pledge, or salute the flag, for exactly that reason.

Well, I am back. Did I miss anything exciting?

Springfield Il is a good place for a pair of history nuts to be tourists together. Great Lincoln museums and a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright house. Plus lots of nice restaurants (mmm chicken tikka masala! )

Interesting tidbit: this was the longest time we have ever spent together. It went …very well. 😎

I am so glad you got to visit some of my favorite places! (The Lincoln Home and the FLW house just a couple of blocks and 50 years apart!)

And the faith is illegal in Russia - something that may be in our future if the red menace isn’t driven into extinction.
