Pelosi Axes McCarthy’s Ludicrous 1/6 Committee Picks, So McCarthy Pulls Out Entirely

Politics • Views: 24,987

Well, this was nothing if not predictable. Trump loyalist Kevin McCarthy tried to stack the 1/6 committee with Trump loyalists, Nancy Pelosi said, “No thanks, no Trump loyalists allowed,” so then McCarthy pulled all 5 GOP members from the committee.

So at least we won’t have Jim Jordan grandstanding and blatantly lying. We might actually have something more like a real investigation. But there’s no doubt the Republican Party will be pulling out all the stops to sabotage it anyway, because the last thing they want is for the real truth to be exposed.

They’ve made that very clear.

(CNN)House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is pulling his five Republican members selected to join the House committee that’s investigating the January 6 insurrection, following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to reject two of McCarthy’s picks, a source with direct knowledge confirmed to CNN.

Earlier Wednesday, Pelosi announced she was vetoing the appointment of two Republicans who objected to the certification of the November election, Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, to the House select committee.

Absolutely the right call. The GQP attempted a coup, and their only interest in the committee is to sabotage it.

This is the most serious period of time in our nation’s history since the Civil War- and yes I mean this situation is more dire than WW2.

We are talking about a fundamental change in this country should any Republican gain control for the foreseeable future. We have a cult Republican political party with a ~40% outright support or malignant disregard for the consequences population intent on sabotaging democracy itself.

40% of the country wants to rule with 100% of the power and impose a very patriarchal and intellectually backwards ideology and then impose this will upon outside nations via force or extortion. Democrats is Congress owe it to us to expose and eventually enable legal prosecution of EVERYONE involved with this coup attempt….before it becomes a successful coup in as little as 3 years.

They know this is their last chance, demographics and time are working against them.

And we cannot take for granted any of the progress we have made in personal freedoms, minority, women’s or LGBTQ rights, much less the reforms in environmental and health protections. I won’t even mention labor rights as they are minimal to nonexistent to begin with.

we will give Pelosi the benefit of the doubt here…. does she allow the likes of Jordan and Banks to give multiple soundbites per day from the hearing to allow Faux to distort its findings or will Fox and their ilk just have to make shit up and try and cherry pick from the video released to tell us that up is actually down and that black and white have no distinguishing differences…

I prefer the latter, because the former has the patina of authenticity, which the GOP has been known to embrace with fervor. The other benefit is that there will be less time being pissed away with their dramatics and more time actually getting to the foundations of how this was planned, funded and executed.

If they subpoena GOP members of the House and the Senate and they refuse to show, arrest them. They made Clinton show up for Benghazi, I don’t see why some of them shouldn’t answer questions if there is a need.

it was the power supply!

got a new one overnight from amazon but it was too late last night

swapped it this morning, plugged the machine in and the fans started.
but it wouldnt boot (windows 7). no beep no nothing.
!$#^@$*%#^*@$&@% - did i have two coincidental, simultaneous problems?

reswapped the bad psu just in case - nope. dead. so swapped back.

google, google, google. a bunch of stuff it couldnt (likely) be.
reset rams? yeah sure.

how about pull the button battery on the motherboard.
damned if that didnt do it.
i’ve been running 5 hours without a hiccup.

- restoring win 7 to a new machine would have been…problematic?
- plus restoring an entire windows system expecting it to work just fine is, well somewhat naive.
- i more or less refuse to upgrade to win 8 or 10, or now 11, or be beholden to someone telling me what i have to use to get my work done
- then it occurred to me - it was our tax program that kept me married to windows. and they stopped supporting win 7 2 years ago. i’ve had it running on a separate laptop i pull out when i need to prepare a return.
- i have (almost) nothing else that’s windows specific and a lot is open source.
- almost all the data is (safely) stored in the cloud.
- i’ve wanted to switch to linux for probably 10 years.
with no system images to deal with, backup and disaster recovery should be much easier to manage (he said).

Now i will.
i have a plan.
it’ll take probably a month or two all told.

off we go on another adventure

Quelle surprise.

McCarthy thought he could stick a bunch of treasonweasel enablers on the Commission to grandstand and deflect attention from GOP complicity on 1/6. Instead, Pelosi will add her own selections to fill out the Commission.

The GOP are insurrectionist enablers, insurrectionist adjacent, and complicit in the coverup of Trump crimes. They’ve put that complicity on display every day before and since 1/6.

It’s baked into everything the GOP does. They don’t care about the nation, only how the GOP billionaire backers can benefit.

This is good, I just hope the money really does go to help with therapy and recovery, decent housing and job training or education. Ohio, where I am from, has also been hit hard, especially in SE counties. My daughter and grandkids live in the middle of that mess. My daughter’s dad is a fucking drug dealer, he and his remaining brothers(two died from overdoses) have sold drugs in Hocking county since the 80s and the cops have turned a blind eye to it. The towns of Logan, Sugar Grove and Nelsonville are just a sad skeleton of what they once were. It’s awful there. I just found out my daughter has a serious opioid problem which explains why she couldn’t stay with us for more than 4 months before taking the kids and leaving to go back to that mess. She’s also had another baby, for a grand total of 5 kids. Grandkids I am not allowed to see because she’s basically been trained to hate me. I’m only a little bit pissed and bitter over that.

Progressives want a dramatic de-Trumpification of the Justice Department. But the attorney general has a different theory of how to heal America.

Garland stands as a kind of radical institutionalist, a stickler for regular order, a true believer in the norms and processes put in place after Watergate that weathered nearly every storm until Trump.

Helps to understand, I think. I hope.

ckkatz  Jul 21, 2021 • 1:09:30pm

The earlier comments on package (mis)delivery brought up some amusing memories for me.

First one is that the block indicator for my street number is ‘5’. For some reason, there are several commercial delivery folks that read ‘6’ (indicating next block down) as ‘5’. The most recent one for the ‘6’ block, had the street number written several times in heavy magic marker. (And correctly, with the ‘6’ included.) And they still delivered the package to me.

My solution, the first time it happened, was to attach a note to the package with my name and email address, explaining what had happened. That way, if they are worried about a package they can contact me and I will check my front porch. If I find something for them, I shoot them an email and then walk it down and drop it off on their porch. (Which happens every couple of weeks.) I did the same with the previous folks who lived there as well.

Years ago, a USPS letter carrier would deliver my mail to a family on a different street that had the same street number. And I would get their mail. We used to just walk it over to the correct address. It got so we were sending each other Christmas cards. However, that letter carrier is probably long since retired.

It’s not going to be just about clocking actual trans persons, it’s going to be…what can you get away with, who can you control and degrade by wrapping it up in a concern about trans-ness. So I wonder what the country, the world is going to look like in three or four months with all these new covid variants popping up? How long before airlines have to shut down or operate at limited capacity? Restaurants and music venues? People laid off and having that whole cycle start again?

I’m frustrated because none of this had to happen. I’m also scared. The Husband had a doctors appointment today and he was told that even though he’s fully vaccinated, a breakthrough infection could put him in danger of not just getting a little sick, but ending up on oxygen in an ER or worse. And I just found out he hasn’t been masking up all the time he’s gone out either since he’s been vaccinated. After today I seriously hope he wises up. We’ve been lucky so far, but our luck isn’t that fabulous. I have all this anger at this shit and nowhere to go with it. Fuck.

The Ghost of a Flea  Jul 21, 2021 • 1:54:18pm

re: #97 Citizen K

It’s so much of the same battles that were fought before too. It’s almost a straight line connection to gay panics of years before, which have almost always been about enforcement of rigid ideas of masculinity and femininity and the lionizing of the former, demonization of the latter.

See, I’d argue that it’s more nihilistic than that. The rhythm is always the same because there are two objectives that always remain the same: first, deny that the status quo can create negative outcomes by blaming problems on outliers and weirdos; second, ride that moral panic to obtain as much license as possible and abuse power more comprehensively than before. Clearly defining the problem is actually a disadvantage to these two objectives; furthermore, if there’s a cultural sensitive point that tends to make people react strongly and emotionally with little consideration, ceding power and grating license because Thing Axiomatically Bad, there’s absolutely no reason to not add that thing into whatever the current moral panic is.

All the moral panics play with the same small set of concepts that have utility in triggering reactionary responses: dangers to kids, fear of “perversion,” uncleanness, disease…anything that triggers disgust and contempt is available to use…because the point is never to define a problem and solve it efficiently, it’s to create excuses and scapegoats.

This is why centrism and reactionaries periodically harmonize and create stuff like The War on Terror, or the Satanic Panic…the former want to be told that their world-system isn’t broken and unjust and will always let them down, and the latter will happily spin a story in which everything would be fine if it weren’t for a small number of malefactors that need to be pre-emptively sequestered and punished. This is the feedback loop that results in totalitarianism: a large group of people that just don’t want to think and a smaller group of people willing to supply cruel, simplistic fables that coddle the former.

The trans moral panic isn’t just a palette swap of gay panic, it’s also substantially made of the same substance as the CRT panic that’s also ongoing which is itself a palette swap of the Cultural Marxism panic, and the integration of schools panic, etc…and a notable feature of both is the deliberate overreach of the anti- legislation: the point isn’t just to “solve” the problem, it’s to control everything as much as possible.

And a big part of why I call this nihilistic is that the forces of reaction don’t actually value the moral order as they present it to their audience of rubes: they don’t want to protect kids or save the country in any kind of open, good-faith way, all of their words crawl with unstated caveats and exceptions that point towards an entire underworld of unvoiced wants—sadism and control-as-fetish—and always have. And the rubes don’t really want the problem solved either, they just want assurance that they’re not part of the problem.

The gay panic didn’t exist to eliminate gay people, but to corral them in a manner that made them vulnerable while allowing the majority of society to feel no responsibility or empathy. The Satanic Panic was just an ever-expanding mire of weirdos—hippies, free love types, drug users, D&D nerds, heavy metal fans, New Agers—that permitted American Christians to feel morally impeccable because their venality and prurience weren’t as bad as sacrificing babies on an altar.

On twitter I see colleges are trending… check it out and it seems the minor-league professional sports ball franchises (who pretend to be amateur sports) are thinking of re-doing the conferences again (most for football.)

What a waste.

And fans are trying to come up with scenarios for the big 4 conferences, moving teams hither and yon, without regard for geography.

Because of course Iowa State should be in the same league as USC, and West Virginia in the same league as Colorado, etc.

The thing that is driving this mess if of course television rights.

Oklahoma and Texas want to be in the SEC because those southerners really love their football. If they join then the SEC will have 16 teams… which means half the teams won’t play the other half in a given year.

The television money drives the idea that there should be only a few big conferences, with the major sports schools.

It’s a multibillion dollar industry.

But it’s “amateur” sports.

We can quibble all we want about technique, his theft of American blues (and other rock star’s wives), etc. etc., you can’t deny what he’s done in his life.

He also said in public at one of his shows in England in the 70s that England was a white country and darker skinned people were not welcome and needed to leave. He was very explicit in his remarks, I don’t care how drunk he was. He’ll never live that down in my mind, he’s a racist bellend. His garbage covid stance is just more grist for the mill.

Eric Clapton as a musician, well, as a guitarist myself I can’t help but admire the guy’s accomplishments. I mean, he’s Eric Clapton, synonymous with guitar playing greatness.

Both of these states of mind can exist at the same time, I assure you.

Unvaccinated nursing home staff are killing the residents.

CDC investigates coronavirus deaths in immunized patients in nursing homes across the US | Hartford Courant

WASHINGTON — Lagging vaccination rates among nursing home staff are being linked to a national increase in COVID-19 infections and deaths at senior facilities in July, and are at the center of a federal investigation in a hard-hit Colorado location where disease detectives found many workers were not inoculated.

The investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of facilities in the Grand Junction, Colorado, area raises concerns among public health doctors that successes in protecting vulnerable elders with vaccines could be in peril as the more aggressive delta variant spreads across the country.

Speaking of Cosby, I grew up on The Cosby Show…I loved it, I loved Himself, but I can’t and won’t ever watch or listen to anything he’s done anymore because of the conniving, scheming rapist he turned out to be off-camera and off-stage that’s in such stark contrast to his well-crafted “America’s Dad” public persona.

When Phylicia Rashad tweeted in celebration of Cosby’s release from prison (that she later walked back for damage control when she was getting ratioed by hell and gone and dragged in the press for it, no doubt), I have to say that I was very disappointed in her and still am, to an extent.

However, I’ll give Rashad a bit of understanding on that tweet, for this one reason: Cosby was very methodical about pursuing his prey and, apparently, it seems that, in the case of the shows she did with him (including the later Cosby), Cosby didn’t “shit where he eat” and apparently didn’t target Rashad or his other then-castmates on those shows. Being friends and co-workers with Cosby over the course of almost forty years must have given Rashad a hell of a blind spot when all this started coming out, especially when it’s not, AFAIK, affecting her or people she knows directly. Even with all of the women that had been his prey over several decades all the way back to his college days coming out and all of the legal actions, she could have still been in denial about it all, because that’s not the Bill Cosby she knew…and that she didn’t want it to be true.

Before I got hired I had to take an aptitude test, a test regarding my knowledge of animal nutrition (related to dogs and cats), and a “personality test”. My son works in a warehouse, he had to take a personality test and a test before he could operate all the non drivable equipment in the warehouse. I don’t know why elected officials should get a pass on what many people have to do to get a job in many other places. A degree isn’t necessarily an indicator of the right skill sets for any job.

That’s what’s so disappointing about her tweet and her apologies for it.

As for Seinfeld, I never really cared for it and still don’t, even before Michael Richards’ N-word meltdown, because I’ve never really “gotten” Seinfeld’s schtick; Richards’ transgression, however, still nags me a bit whenever I watch Weird Al’s UHF, seeing as pre-Seinfeld Richards plays a very major character in the movie. However, Richards aside, UHF is still one of my favorite movies, because, at its heart, it’s Weird Al’s fully-exposed id at the height of his fame and power (and, also, the only Weird Al movie we’ll likely ever get).

The Weird History of Gender-Segregated Bathrooms (Live Science, May 9, 2016)

Gender-segregated public restrooms are either very old or very new, depending on how you look at the question. They arose in the Victorian era, along with widespread plumbing, meaning they’ve been around almost as long as the modern bathroom itself. On the other hand, having privacy for peeing is a relatively modern phenomenon.

The first known gender-segregated loo was for a Parisian ball in 1739, which people at the time thought was a novelty.

What year did Mulholland Drive come out? 2000? 2001? I’m sure it was written in the 90s.

The whole plot of that movie is basically about “The Casting Couch” but because David Lynch made it, it takes 20 years of analysis to figure that out and get through all the surreal, stylistic stuff piled on top. When interviewed about the movie many years later, Lynch actually brought up MeToo and Harvey Weinstein when discussing the themes of the flick.

In 1983, I used to enjoy “Himself,” when it was omnipresent on the premium cable movie channels of the time.

Watching it again many years later as an adult, I found myself taken aback by how often routines revolved around Camille and the Cosby daughters wanting Ennis killed. And how many routines came across as a justification for child abuse as a loving form of discipline.

After that, I couldn’t look at those routines the same way again.

The Dentist routine, though, remains comedy gold.

“Many showbiz people say” (and please feel free to take that with as many pounds of salt as you want) that Cosby’s bullshit, like Harvey Weinstein’s, was not exactly a secret among his peers even long before his legal troubles.

Oh, no doubt that Cosby had a reputation as a “creeper” long before The Cosby Show, Himself, or even Mother, Jugs, and Speed, I Spy, and his other 60s and 70s work. However, innuendo and gossip is often just that, with no factual grounds; when it’s starts getting into the legal arena, where there are penalties for perjury and false witness, that’s where the rubber really started meeting the road for all of those decades-long gossips and innuendos against Cosby.

Like with many of the high-profile people that have been proven to be rapists, pederasts, and abusers over the past decade or two, such as Cosby, Spacey, Weinstein, Bryan Singer, and others, there’s going to be a lot of people in the industry (and even knowledgable fans) that connect the dots of all of that innuendo and gossip and be (at least) “WTF?” as it finally becomes public with corraborative proof and others, such as Rashad, that lets their personal biases cloud their logic, because *person they know* would never do such things.

Looks like the field is cleared for Tim Ryan. As a general rule, I’m not too keen on clearing fields for preferred candidates. Seems to rarely work out for either party.

He’s white, male, Christian, and pro-union. Are there any other relevant attributes for a Democratic candidate in Ohio?

I’m of two minds (or more) on that.

On the one hand, the idea of “machine politics” can generate some pretty awful people.
On the other hand, a long-drawn out primary is a gift to the opposition when they’ve already cleared the field (Clinton/Sanders v Trump).
On the third hand, if there isn’t a lot of difference between the candidates’ positions except polling, hangers on seem more likely to be grifters or stoking their ego.
On the fourth hand, there might only be one decent candidate willing to run at all.

re: #229 A Three Hour Tour

In 1983, I used to enjoy “Himself,” when it was omnipresent on the premium cable movie channels of the time.

Watching it again many years later as an adult, I found myself taken aback by how often routines revolved around Camille and the Cosby daughters wanted Ennis killed. And how many routines came across as a justification for child abuse as a loving form of discipline.

After that, I couldn’t look at those routines the same way again.

The Dentist routine, though, remains comedy gold.

Yeah I felt the same. As I got older the normalization of child abuse in Himself slowly turned me off of Cosby, but hadn’t completely cause me to boycott before the nail in the coffin came out, mainly because I thought that was “just how everyone was back then”.

Also after Ennis’ death, all the talk of “killing” him was really uncomfortable to watch.

Yeah, after Ennis’ death, it was hard going back to watching the Himself routines about him, because it just didn’t feel right.

Now, all of it doesn’t feel right. At all.

The grift must go on. It is eternal and forever shameless.

Shiawassee County, Michigan, Republicans Help Themselves To $65K In COVID-19 ‘Hazard Pay (Wonkette)

Congress passed President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan without a single Republican vote, but that didn’t stop Republicans from shamelessly claiming credit for all the good the bill would achieve. Now, some Michigan Republicans are directly profiting from the bill’s largesse.

Members of the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners, who are all Republicans, agreed to share federal COVID-19 relief funds with their employees last week, but they divided their bounty trickle-down style: According to records obtained by Michigan Live-The Flint Journal, “top-level administrators” each received $25,000, department heads took home $12,500, middle management officials (who are likely superfluous) received $5,000, and the chief deputies, Health Department employees, and attorneys (those guys always have their hands out … sorry, honey) got $2,500.

But what about the front line workers, the people directly exposed to the coronavirus when they cleaned buildings and provided vaccines to residents? The employees identified as “cleaning staff” received $2,000 and the rest got $1,000.

Yeah, that’s fucked up.

No. They are well crushed and worthless. When I was a child in Quincy, Il we had a neighbor who was very high functioning something or other. He was about 20yo when we moved there. I was about 5yo. We played Matchbox cars together. But he was so careful and always wiped his cars off before returning to the box. His cars were pristine; mine were always dinged up. But somehow I still have them.

Another of those mysteries (that never really was one) solved:

Instead of distancing people, locking the event down, refusing to allow positive people to enter and a slew of other public health-friendly ideas, the campaign stopped testing.

“The campaign immediately clamped down on testing to prevent discovering who else might be infected,” said the book. “Word was passed throughout the Trump team that afternoon: remaining staff were not to get tested in Tulsa, but rather to wait until they returned home to headquarters in Arlington.”

“‘The president wants this to stop,’ a campaign staffer told an Oklahoma VIP who had arrived to get tested.”

Michigan Sheriff Alarms Small-Town Clerks With Shady, Mike Lindell-Inspired Elections Probe (Talking Points Memo, today)

Berry County Sheriff Dar Leaf (R) is investigating all township clerks with a deputy and a private investigator over his allegations they committed voter fraud.

And the clerks are none too happy about it.

“It seemed like they were looking to accuse people or places of fraud, or potential fraud, is what it felt like,” said Cindy Willshire, clerk of Thornapple Township.

“They say they’re not questioning our integrity, but you almost kind of feel like they are,” said Anita Mennell, clerk of Hastings Charter Township.

“I’ve been a clerk for 18 years and I’ve had a spot-on election every time,” said Robin Hawthorne, clerk of Rutland Township. “We’re all a little upset about this.”

The investigative duo ended some of their interviews — in which they’ve asked about the procedures in place on Election Day and the programming of Dominion voting machines — by saying they could return with even more questions about the election, several clerks told TPM.

“I told them, I’m done talking,” Hawthorne recalled. “If you want to talk to me again, come back with a subpoena or a warrant.”

Leaf told The Hastings Banner that Lynch came recommended by Stefanie Lambert Junttila, a bit player in the legal effort to steal Trump a second term, and one of several attorneys facing sanctions for the (allegedly) frivolous lawsuit she filed seeking to overturn Michigan’s election results.

Junttila also represented Sheriff Leaf in a December lawsuit he filed against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and the Board of State Canvassers, alleging massive election fraud. A federal judge tossed that suit just a day after it was filed, saying that the sheriff had asked the court to make “speculative leaps toward a hazy and nebulous inference that there has been numerous instances of election fraud and that defendants are destroying the evidence.”

Another asshole Republican arrested, this time in Montana. I think we need to shut the whole GOP down until we can find what the hell is going on.

State senator charged with reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer (Montana Free Press)

He was doing 88 mph in a construction zone. He threatened the state trooper’s job by saying he would call the state Attorney General to get him fired.

Montana Senate President Pro Tempore Jason Ellsworth, R-Hamilton, has been charged with three misdemeanors, including obstruction of a peace officer, after he was pulled over for speeding in a construction zone in May. The officer reported a verbal altercation with Ellsworth in which the senator claimed he was exempt from arrest because he was a lawmaker traveling for legislative business.

The charges were filed by Broadwater County Attorney Cory Swanson on May 26. Ellsworth is scheduled to make an initial appearance in court on Aug. 3.

The traffic stop and charges have not previously been reported.

The senator did not respond to multiple requests for comment before publication. An attorney representing Ellsworth also did not respond to a request for comment on behalf of his client.

In a statement provided after publication, a spokesman for Senate Republicans said the incident occurred when Ellsworth was on his way to Helena “after a long day dealing with a family medical issue.”

“He was in a hurry to get to town and get some rest before running errands and participating in legislative business the next day,” Kyle Schmauch said in an emailed statement.

What is truly driving the industries hit by the “unemployment crisis” is that things aren’t going to plan. They thought they could just cut loose their entire workforce, coast for months on whatever money they had in the bank, and then come back months later to turn on the keys and go back to “business as usual.”

And what’s distressing them so badly is that the employees they expected to be so desperate for work that they’d jump at the opportunity to just return to shit wages and poor treatment instead got enough money from the government to look for better jobs or get the training/education they needed to do so.

Good for you! I hope this new job works out better for you. That is incredibly shitty of your last job.

Thanks, I’m definitely looking forward to the new job. It’s at a state hospital for individuals dealing with mental illnesses.

The thing is, I can’t really single out my old company as a particularly bad actor or anything (even though I do take issue with some of their business decisions and IMO top heavy organizational structure). They were operating the way that industry as a whole operates. And being a non-profit, its not like anyone was just greedily lining their pockets (though the CEO was pulling down a fair bit of coin).

One of the larger issues is that they are stuck negotiating rates with the state or managed care organizations contracted by the state. Unless the state or Medicare/Medicaid is willing to pay more, they are pretty much forced to accept the rates that are offered.

Tucker’s obviously a psychopath. If he has to be a psycho-killer, his insane audience is the best possible target. People who follow the lead of the man that no person in their right mind would take seriously, as his employer asserts.

“200 MPH” was also good.

Why is it that great comedians in their early days seem to always wind up becoming lecherous losers?

I got to see that one live. My father’s favorite was “Russell, My Brother Who I Slept With,” as it reminded him so much of growing up with my uncle Dale as his younger brother.

“Chicken Heart.” Oh, when he was starting, he was so good!

re: #288 Backwoods_Sleuth

Downplays? Oh come on. There are very few people who want to stay home and do nothing and “live off unemployment”. All most people just want to be able to support themselves, their families and maybe have a little left over for retirement and the occasional vacation or education. Imagine a world where basic needs and a little more could be met with a minimum wage job. How many people could rise and do so many amazing things without poverty and constant anxiety, the ability to learn a skilled trade or get a college degree? It’s really damned stupid we haven’t figured this out by now.
