And Now, Something Amazing: Joshua Meader, “Cascades”

Music • Views: 17,719

YouTube

I have never seen a picking style like Joshua Meader’s. If you watch his right hand, it doesn’t even look like all those notes should be coming out of the guitar. Absolutely amazing.

Another piece/etude I wrote on the new Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster.

I’m all in favor of vaccine passports. I’m sure some people will forge them, but a bunch of people will get vaccinated so they can do stuff without breaking the law, and that is what I want - more people vaccinated.

At this point, whatever works is my motto. Especially if the vaccine passports come with a bit of info on the criminal consequences of forging or trying to sell fake ones.

Based on a true story:

Stranger at my door: “Hey, I’m running for New Jersey State Senate. Hope to have your support this fall!”

Me: “Republican or Democrat?”

Stranger: “Republican.”

Me: “Not gonna happen.”

Stranger: “Have a nice day!”

Moral of the story: I remember January 6th, 2021, you fuckheads.

I’ve been going maskless, but I’m probably putting it back on in public. I was running the numbers on my county: we had a 10% infection rate on a population of just over 510,000. Case are not up dramatically, but they are going up.

We also took a long weekend in Boston two weeks ago, and my partner just heard that they’re putting the mask back on, along with LA.

What fucking kills me is we’re having to do this to keep alive the fuckheads who are refusing the vaccine but have no legitimate reason to do so. I don’t want to be responsible for anyone’s death, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to give a shit about this lovely cross section of America.

Maskless outdoors unless a sidewalk is crowded. Masked indoors, unless actively eating or drinking (which doesn’t happen unless the place is almost empty and has plenty of outdoor ventilation). This is made easier since almost all venues around here require masking.

hi

On yesterday’s discussion of Sarah Brand’s video “Red Dress,” Robyn Pennacchia of Wonkette weighs in with her opinion.

Is This Terrible Song A Sociology Experiment Or What?

She notes the tags on the YouTube video which you can only see when you embed a video on a Website.

Now, some people in my Twitter mentions, when I posted it, suggested that it had to be fake, on account of the fact that no one could possibly go through life and make it to Oxford of all places without realizing that they are that bad at singing. That perhaps, as she is a sociology student, this is merely a social experiment of some kind — perhaps to see how many people she could get to go along with her.

I disagree, and not just because I don’t think that people who went to fancy schools are that much less likely to be more self-aware than anyone else. After all, Ted Cruz went to Harvard and Princeton. Neo-Nazi Richard Spencer went to Duke, although that did seem to prompt a lot of “But he’s DAPPER!” confusion among people who for some reason couldn’t fathom that a clean-cut, articulate, well-dressed Ivy Leaguer could be a Nazi. Oh, and you know who went to Oxford? Fox Mulder. Who, while correct about things on the X-Files, would be extremely wrong about them in real life.

As evidence that she is for real, allow me to show you the category tags on that video, which include things like “summer,” “good time,” “scandalous” and “seductive.” Those don’t pop up on YouTube, they only pop up when we embed the video ourselves.

Embedded in the article is a screen shot of all the categories Ms. Brand used for the video.

Also — that is just not the face of someone who is taking the piss. She is clearly very sincere. And honestly, I’m happy for her. I am a very big fan of people who are terrible at singing and insist upon doing so anyway, from The Cherry Sisters to Florence Foster Jenkins to Mrs. Miller. It takes chutzpah I don’t have, that’s for sure.

The strings look that way due to a strobbing effect from the lights and or camera or both.

Just prior to the release of “Red Dress” by Sarah Brand, Green Templeton College of Oxford University wrote an article about the upcoming release, as well as her previous release “Fantasy” on her first album. (If Ms. Brand is doing a send up, she’s doing one helluva job confusing people.)

Back at Wonkette, Ms. Pennacchia notes that this harkens back to the early days of YouTube, when people put up terrible videos of all kinds of things and were proud to do it.

Sarah Brand (MSc Sociology) films her ‘Fantasy’ music video at Green Templeton (University of Oxford)

Sarah Brand (MSc Sociology) chose the beautiful Green Templeton College grounds as the location for filming a music video to accompany her new song ‘Fantasy’.

The music video was released via YouTube on 15 June.

Sarah Brand dancing with a male partner in front of the Radcliffe Observatory

Sarah said: “Fantasy’ is the debut single from my first album, ‘EyEs’. I wrote this song on my guitar in the bedroom, fantasizing about the life I wanted while feeling stuck in a difficult situation. I finally found the courage to rectify it, and this song represents the strength to manifest your desired reality.

Sarah Bran’I chose Green Templeton College as the location for the music video because being part of the Green Templeton and Oxford community represents a beautiful time in my life where my desired reality became real. And, of course, Green Templeton’s campus is gorgeous!’

‘Fantasy’ is available now on all major streaming platforms.

Giants of the music industry were honored Saturday in Cincinnati.

Bootsy Collins, The Isley Brothers, Otis Williams, and the late Dr. Charles Fold are the founding inductees for the Black Music Walk of Fame.

A ceremony was held at the new Andrew J. Brady ICON Music Center on The Banks which included some live music.

“This is much more than a Grammy, you know,” said Bootsy Collins. “For hometown to acknowledge their own that’s some deep stuff, right there. You know what it really is?

Is this for all black music, or just people from Cincinnati?

I do not know for sure, but found this:

Future inductees will cover a variety of musical genres including blues, soul, R&B, funk, hip hop, bluegrass and country.

“These artists are inspirational. Some of them were on the Chitlin’ Circuit, some of them had to perform while their backs were turned, many had their money and songs stolen from them. Their struggle needs to be told,” Reece said.

The “Chitlin’ Circuit” was a group of performance venues located mostly in the South but across country that were accepted Black entertainers during Jim Crow.

Many of these artists were not allowed to perform in the bigger white venues but instead performed in venues in places the West End’s The Cotton Club.

Unless he is disqualified for legal reasons, he will win the GOP nomination hands-down.

And they will not repeat the same “mistakes” they made last time in trusting GOP officials (who have not proven their personal loyalty to him) to have any influence on verifying vote counts in those places he does not win.

Dating app trips up another Capitol riot suspect, one accused of hitting police with whip (Washington Post, today)

Women on dating apps are really pissed at these guys. Good.

It seems a lot of women are just straight-up asking if conservatives were at the Capitol January 6, and they confess right on the dating app.

She turned him over to the FBI, and his identity was confirmed by a FedEx driver.

The phrase “all is fair in love and war” took on a new meaning Friday, when a Texas man was arrested after boasting to a match in a dating app about participating in the Jan. 6 riot “from the very beginning.”

Andrew Taake of Houston was charged with assaulting police and storming the Capitol building. His arrest follows a months-long investigation spurred by a tip and a FedEx delivery driver who confirmed his identity to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Taake made his initial court appearance Friday in the Southern District of Texas, according to a Department of Justice news release. His public defender did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Similarly to another arrested rioter, it all started with a conversation on Bumble, a dating app.

Today, The New York Times ran a less-than-glowing profile on Dr. Joseph Mercola, the man a recent study says has been the biggest spreader of coronavirus misinformation since the beginning of the pandemic. The man has made millions off of selling fake cures and otherwise scaring your relatives into not getting the vaccine, putting us all in danger. This is not the first critical article they’ve written on him during the pandemic and it probably will not be the last.

Alcala’s chilling story provided an early glimpse of how the growth of unscripted television with everyday people would inevitably have a dark side. He appeared on the 1970s syndicated series, but the “bachelorette” that he chose wound up refusing to go out with him, telling producers after the taping that she got “weird vibes coming off him,” according to ABC News.

Even here in my small town, it has changed drastically. The cops in my town? They probably have a damn target drawn on our address. Every time I see a cop car, even a local one (ESPECIALLY a local one), I involuntarily clench. Speaking to the Guardian (long article), [former Tennessee head of its immunisation programme Dr. Michelle] Fiscus (fired for not bowing down to the religion of conservatism) admitted the conservative backlash against the vaccine was something she had not expected. “I think I really underestimated the political divide,” she said, noting that like many states Tennessee’s initial vaccine outreach had been focused on Black and minority communities with historic distrust of medical systems.

“We were all really surprised that [conservative rural white men] ended up being our most vaccine-hesitant population, and it’s not necessarily because of mistrust of government, it’s because of an ideology - that if I get this vaccine I am somehow placating the left wing of the political spectrum,” she said.

“To see people sacrificing their own health and wellbeing and that of their families and community to spite this perceived political benefit to the left is just really dumbfounding.”

I was in the wrong part of the country in those days; in flyover country, we didn’t get those headlines. I remember Rodney King, though.

Did you ever watch The Shield?

Rampart Division is what inspired the writer/showrunner.

Of course, idiots are accusing her of faking these threats. Like that’s something that a busy Congresswoman has time and energy to do.

If you want to be irresponsible to yourself, that is your prerogative, but I do not grasp their need to endanger others

In any case, I will be ignoring this year’s Olympics just like I ignored the mess they made of Rio in 2016…

A lot of them lack the empathy, or understand the need to step back a bit and consider the consequences of decisions made, or more importantly, about to be made. Combined often with the immaturity factor of considering themselves and what they do as the center of the universe. What others want/need is secondary, and often additionally of no consequence compared to their own wants and needs.

From that “model” you can unfortunately predict a whole lot about how people will react to certain situations. What I find sad is that I know multiple people from college who this model applied to in the 80s and who it still accurately applies to forty years later.
