Trump to DOJ: “Just Say the Election Was Corrupt and Leave the Rest to Me”

Politics • Views: 20,149

Two rather large pieces of news today. First, new evidence of Donald Trump’s criminal coup attempt: Trump to DOJ: ‘Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me’.

Former President Donald Trump pressured acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen to declare that the election was corrupt in an attempt to help Republican members of Congress try to overturn the election result, according to notes of a December 2020 call Trump held with Rosen and acting deputy attorney general Richard Donoghue.

During the December 27, 2020, call, Trump pressured Rosen and Donoghue to falsely declare the election “illegal” and “corrupt” even after the Justice Department had not uncovered evidence of widespread voter fraud.

“Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen,” Trump said on the call, according to Donoghue’s notes.

Second, but not least: Trump tax returns must be released by IRS to Congress, DOJ says.

The DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel in a written opinion said that the Democratic-lead House Ways and Means Committee had made a request with a legitimate legislative purpose to see Trump’s tax returns, with a stated objective of assessing how the IRS audits presidents’ tax returns.

Under federal law, the tax-related committees of Congress have a “broad right” to obtain taxpayer information from the Treasury Department, the IRS’s parent, the 39-page opinion noted.

“The statute at issue here is unambiguous: ‘Upon written request’ of the chairman of one of the three congressional tax committees, the Secretary ‘shall furnish’ the requested tax information to the Committee,′ ” the opinion said.

It’s shaping up to be a bad day for Donald Trump, but even with this I’ll still be surprised if he ever faces real accountability for his crimes.

CDC study shows three-fourths of people infected in Massachusetts covid-19 outbreak were vaccinated but few required hospitalization

The picture also cuts off this part of the first paragraph.

The report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is one key piece of a growing body of evidence that bolsters the hypothesis that vaccinated people can spread the more transmissible variant and may be a factor in the summer surge of infections.

The second paragraph kicks the anti-maskers in the teeth:

The data, detailed in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, provided key evidence that convinced agency scientists to reverse recommendations on mask-wearing and advise that vaccinated individuals wear masks in indoor public settings in some circumstances.

(edited by me to correct recopy of the first paragraph)

Hey, UAE Exotic Falconry and Finance, if that’s your real name, why are you afraid of the entire headline? Why are you afraid of the whole first paragraph?

Doesn’t fit your conservalies?

“We all loved Susan and immediately rallied to support her,” stated Mayor Leanne Turner. “But with the projected lifetime cost of Susan’s insulin supply exceeding $400,000, there was really no way a single Kickstarter would ever keep her alive. So we decided the next best thing would be to honor her with a really beautiful memorial service and burial.”

With the proceeds of the funeral Kickstarter, the residents of Independence were able to purchase a totally gorge pine coffin, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when her BFF Michelle Gonzalez delivered a showstopping eulogy.

“Susan was a great friend,” Gonzalez eulogized. “We both loved drinking wine, watching Channing Tatum movies, and having vent seshes about how she was afraid she would die before she turned 30 because she couldn’t afford the medicine she needed to stay alive.”

Aww! Someone get us some tissues, because that is the definition of friendship!

I have had this happen a few times. My suggestion - download the free Google Authenticator app. The next time it gets to the point where you’re able to get access codes, switch from receiving a text message to using Google Authenticator. It’s simple to set up and the codes are kept directly on your phone, so no worries about slow/missing text messages causing you to be unable to log in.

You mean the text messages? They get like that sometimes; unfortunately there isn’t much I can do about it. They used to be reliable, lately not so much. I recommend using an authenticator app instead - doesn’t rely on text messages.

I want him to die, but only after contracting a version of covid so brutal, it’s nicknamed Ooooh Black Bettie, dang-a-lang, or Black Bett for short. Basically does horrible things to horrible people, and only to horrible people. Causes the arms and legs to rot off the body in a process that doesn’t care about induced comas or heavy sedation, it’ll make you scream for weeks before you die. And again, if you get it, it’s because you are a pedophile, rapist, unrepentant murderer, etc. It would actually make kind of an interesting short-story, wouldn’t it? A disease that literally destroys only those who deserve being in a kind of physical hell before death.

I like Authy for an authenticator app. YMMV. Always, always prefer any method of 2FA that isn’t a text message.

Reason #2381375 why I switched away from AT&T a few years ago was because they gave me what I’m sure they thought was exemplary customer service.

I had just bought a new phone, and the new phone required a SIM card in a different form factor from the old one. I went into one of their stores and told them I needed a new SIM card. They asked me for my phone number.

And that was all.

They didn’t want to see a single shred of ID or anything that would indicate that I was the actual owner of the phone number for which I was requesting a SIM card.

If I’d had malicious intent, I would have been able to impersonate AT&T customer whose phone number I knew, and used text messages to reset all their passwords. Email, banking, credit cards, all of it.

I dropped AT&T and moved to a different carrier at the end of the billing cycle.

“…Klein’s arrest is the most direct link yet between the Trump administration and the rioters, despite attempts by some conservatives to dissociate the insurrection from the former president. Many of the 300-plus people who have been charged in connection with the insurrection have described themselves as Trump supporters, while some have ties to extremist groups like the Proud Boys, which Canada has designated a terrorist group, and the Oath Keepers.

Klein, who is also a former Trump campaign employee, did not respond to a request for comment. A State Department spokesman said Klein served as a political appointee in the department from 2017 until his resignation in January. “This is being investigated by FBI, and they are the appropriate agency to answer questions specific to the charges,” the spokesman said.”

It’s actually fairly easy to get on the ballot for federal offices with a quick change of address. States can require someone to live in the state for a certain amount of time before they run for state office, but I’m 99% sure that they can’t do that for federal offices. It’s why Cheney was able to change his residence from Texas to Wyoming like 4 months before the 2000 general election.

She still lives in Wasilla.

Here’s what we could gather about Sarah Palin’s life these days: She lives, at least most of the time, in the same house on Lake Lucille in Wasilla that the family has occupied for more than a decade. She applies for a Permanent Fund dividend every year, which would indicate she spends the majority of the year in Alaska. She voted, absentee, in the 2020 presidential election from Alaska, according to Division of Elections records.

The Palin kids have grown up and into adult lives of their own: Bristol is a real estate agent in the Austin, Texas, area with an Instagram following bigger than her mother’s. Willow has twins and a salon in the Mat-Su. Piper has pursued nursing school. Trig, born when Palin was governor, is now in high school. It’s not clear what Track is up to but court records show all of the criminal cases against him as resolved.

Though her SarahPAC closed in 2017, Sarah still maintains a national profile traveling to speak for conservative causes and candidates. Most recently, she was in Texas for Turning Points USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit, for a speech that promised “her signature zingers” as well as “homespun stories of everyday Americans.” She also has an ongoing federal lawsuit against The New York Times, which she says libeled her by suggesting she played a role in inspiring a 2011 mass shooting in Arizona. Her website, sarahpalin.com, is still a productive content farm, churning out a half-dozen pieces of byline-free clickbait daily. On Facebook, 4.5 million people follow her.

re: #97 Backwoods_Sleuth

Perhaps Mr. Chapman doesn’t know the terminology she is using.

She explicitly used the made-up word “scientism.”

Scientism is a Christian apologetics term several decades old. The idea is to equate the scientific method as a religion, you just “believe in science because you believe,” and therefore any science findings that don’t comport with Christian belief can be dismissed as religion (and not theirs).

The use of that word absolutely indicates she is a Christian (especially because she defined it). The proper follow-up question wouldn’t be questioning her if she understood the scientific method (she doesn’t), but what flavour of Christian she is.

Because religious belief cannot be supported with facts, and science can, the only way for an apologist to argue against it is to call it something it is not (another religion). Christian apologists have to lie about what other people believe to support their faith.

See also calling atheism a religion.

But last fall, she lobbed a grenade by posting a video of herself, mid-yardwork, in which she directly addressed U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, suggesting she was considering running for her seat in 2022.

maybe she could challenge for a House seat, that would mean taking on Biggs or Gosar or Schweikert (is who I would pick) but the state is still slowly trending Blue and I really don’t think the efforts of the recount have swayed any independents to the GOP POV. Statements that the GOP is a sure bet aren’t realistic.

Now if the Congress doesn’t get their shit together and vote to protect voting rights, yeah, we’re all pretty much screwed no matter the noises of a supposedly just DOJ because that will be bypassed to SCOTUS where they’ll lose because of the effective GOP long game.

Is it still a challenge out here, you bet, most of the folks making noise are the usual MAGA suspects, while they get coverage, support may not actually be following them.

Democratic PAC scammer pleads guilty for stealing from various PACs he set up. (Juanita Jean’s, the World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon)

Life of Crime

I have a good weekend story for you.

There’s a guy named John Pierre Dupont a/k/a “John Gary Rinaldo.” The story on his name is this: John Gary Rinaldo legally changed his name to Pierre Dupont in California in 2012.

He was indicted in 2019 for stealing more than $250,000 through multiple scam political PACs.

Yesterday he entered a guilty plea. He had several political contribution scams going and here’s just one of them:

Another website operated by DUPONT purported to be raising money “to unite immigrant families,” falsely claiming that donations to the Foundation for Sanity in Politics PAC would “go to help pay our volunteer attorneys’, doctors’, nurses’ and social workers’ costs and pay for transportation to unite immigrant families.” In fact, that PAC had no volunteers or staff, and dedicated no funds to paying for any action or advocacy.

He also had a PAC “raising money” for Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, and other Democrats. He used his previous name - John Gary Rinaldo - on the scam paperwork.

And wanna talk about cheeky? He even had a plan to keep from reporting the donations at all, making his scam undetectable. On the Bernie Sander’s site, he pleaded …

“EVERY TIME WE PROCESS YOUR CREDIT CARD DONATION, THE BIG BANKS TAKE UP TO 40% OF THE DONATIONS JUST FOR PROCESSING YOUR CREDIT CARD DONATION…THAT IS WHY WE ARE GIVING YOU THE OPTION…TO MAKE YOUR DONATIONS IN CASH OR CHECK.”

(more, this guy is a real dirtbag)

Not to start an argument here or anything, just throwing some food for thought.

Intelligence is not controlled solely by genetics. “Geniuses” are born from “morons” everyday. Childhood environment, quality of life, if the family is rich or poor, quality of educational opportunities. These are primary factors in determining intelligence.

Some of the themes touched on by Idiocracy are.. well… eugenics-adjacent and I’m not comfortable with that at all. When I first watched the movie, it was like yeah haha it’s a comedy flick. I can accept a bullshit premise. I accept magic in fantasy movies and FTL travel in Sci-Fi.

Until every one and their brother in the US jumped on the “Idiocracy isn’t supposed to be a documentary but it is” bandwagon the past few years.

That’s not how any of this works, and I wish more people wouldn’t be flippant about eugenics-adjacent shit like that.

After I got done at the ski area it only took me 90 minutes to get home. I was going to sleep on the ski area chef’s couch tonight if the backroad was still closed anyways. But I’m home now and I don’t have to be back there until 1 p.m. tomorrow. Fuck man, that backroad better be open tomorrow!

Just checked the weather radar, it’s raining again right over the burn scar.

During the fire last summer, the interstate was closed for 13 days. If the bridge substructures and superstructures are seriously compromised from these mud flows, it could be months before the highway opens again.

Not good, man. Not good.

Marco Rubio really does have a scorching case of Derpies.

He basically just did the “So, are you Chinese or Japanese?” bit from King of the Hill.

Okay, when did the old familiar saying, “At least Mussolini made the trains run on time” morph into Hitler making them run on time, and why did no one send me the memo?

Probably because it wasn’t really true and in the bigger picture Hitler had to save Mussolini’s ass a few times.

It would have given cover to Georgia and Arizona to replace their electors, maybe Wisconsin as well, instead of 147 R’s voting to object it would have been 180, more than 7 R senators, and Osoff and Warnock maybe wouldn’t have been seated.

How? There was no mechanism for them to replace their electors. There may be now, with the laws they are putting in place, but at the time, they had no choice but to go along with the Secretary of State.

Illegal, you say? Then that’s a matter for the courts. Which even if you win, burns 6 months. How much did we lose, how many bills were stalled, while Norm Coleman dragged Al Franken through recount hell until July of the year after the election?
