Shame: “Nigel Hitter”

Music • Views: 17,783

YouTube

We seem to have another British Invasion, of bands inspired by and branching out and mutating from experimental rock bands like the Talking Heads and the B-52s, via Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, with echoes of Devo and The Residents.

I heartily approve of this invasion and/or mutation, unlike some others I could name.

“Nigel Hitter” taken from shame’s new album ‘Drunk Tank Pink’, out 15 January 2021 on Dead Oceans.

I’ve started listening to Dr. Michael Osterholm’s podcasts about Covid updates and I’m finding them so much more helpful than following the news.

Apparently one of his most recent podcasts talked in great detail about disinformation and giving reasons why it was BS. YouTube took the podcast video down with the reason that his podcast was distributing misinformation. He’s been fighting it, but no human from YouTube has contacted him yet. He’s just getting standard replies that support their
decision that combating disinformation = spreading disinformation. I just subscribed toand liked his latest post.

It just seems totally like YouTube to block an infectious disease expert for combatting deadly misinformation.

Old man observation: It’s a little weird when I find out that an acquaintance I thought of as “young” is actually 53.

I called one of my parents’ friends “ma’am” a couple of years ago, since that was how I was always taught to acknowledge my elders. She admonished me, “I’m not that much older than you, SIR.” It literally hadn’t occurred to me that I was in my 30’s and not a kid anymore.

When the vaccines first came out: 95% effective. So a 1 in 20 chance of still getting it.

Sound like rolling a 1 on a 1d20 to me. Seems to happen way more than 5% of the time too.

Saw the same theory mentioned about wearing masks. That roleplayers would gladly put on an extra item in order to get +1 on a saving throw.

95% efficacy meant that a vaccinated person is 95% less likely to get it than an unvaccinated person. in the trial group that meant that .04% in the vaccine group got covid not 5%

Yes, in other words, 95% of the time when exposed to sufficient virions.

Not just 95% of the time walking around doing whatever.

Just checked the weather radar, it’s raining again right over the burn scar.

During the fire last summer, the interstate was closed for 13 days. If the bridge substructures and superstructures are seriously compromised from these mud flows, it could be months before the highway opens again.

Not good, man. Not good.

Everyone’s staying in Glenwood Springs (the bride and groom live here). Today was travel day for most everybody, the detour from Denver adds two hours to the overland travel time. I hope they got it figured out. Getting anywhere on either side of Glenwood Canyon is BIG HASSLE right now.

hi

So I listened to the posted tune up there. Not really my kind of music. I’m still waiting for the Disco revival.

I’m not a fan of Websites which require you to use geolocation for whatever thing the Website does, particularly since that fixes my computer in Jefferson City, Missouri. Such Websites are useless here.

Fortunately, the EPA’s air quality Website allows you to go around that request, though you have to wait a couple seconds first.

Southeast winds strengthened today as predicted, raising our air quality out here in the Old West to “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” The air quality is expected to continue degrading into “unhealthy” or “very unhealthy” by tomorrow.

airnow.gov

On the other hand, the National Weather Service has scheduled us for severe thunderstorms tomorrow, so that might knock down some of the pollutants (or start a prairie fire from all the lightning, or destroy everything with hail and tornadoes).

It appears that generally, Planet Earth isn’t a particularly intelligently-designed place to live for our species.

The problem with the new Foo Fighters release “Hail Satin” (at least for me) is they released it on LP (that’s fine, I have a turntable and a much larger collection of LPs than I do CDs) in physical record stores (and digital on Amazon, which kind of defeats the purpose of an LP).

The nearest physical record store to me is in Cheyenne (130 miles). The next closest is in Kearney (200 miles). I suppose I could call ahead to either of those shops and see if they have the LP or can order it.

As far as I can tell, the Foo Fighters do not have the LP at their own Website (they offer various streaming services, again, digital).

re: #82 Jack Burton, Gunner on Death Star of David

Are year round school schedules sorcery to people outside of California or something?

My elementary school ran both, so did the Jr High. My High school was completely traditional scheduling though so they could fit 2 summer school sessions in.

We have a bit of a problem with the large number of snow days that have to be scheduled, due to the exigences of the weather here.

Scheduling snow days makes the school year such that it cuts into what might be summer sessions elsewhere.

Add to that the blistering hot summers here, and that costs a bunch of money to operate a school in the summer.

The pandemic meant no snow days at all, which could have been used for two entire school sessions, or multiple summer sessions. Instead, our governor has ended at-home schooling on pain of a school district losing equalisation funds (those are the funds transferred from the wealthy districts to the poorer districts, to “equalise” educational opportunities regardless of where you go to school). Threatening those funds disproportionately affects poor urban areas (mostly minorities), and extremely rural districts (blazing white).

As has been noted by historians and economists past and present, poor whites and poor minorities have a helluva lot more in common with each other than they do with the bourgeoisie and wealthy. It is thus in the interest for the minority bourgeoisie and wealthy to keep everyone else divided by each other (and racism makes a damn good wedge).

Fuquing with schools here might be a bit of a problem for our governor though. When the pandemic first started and he had to have his democide and absolutely prohibited masks in schools, all the really rural school districts out here in the Panhandle all gave him the middle finger. Banner County Public School (next county west, borders Wyoming), with a single building K-12 and about a hundred students, was the very first district to tell the governor to stuff it.

As much as the governor attacks so-called government schools (says inherited billionaire who went to all private Catholic schools), he really doesn’t get Nebraskans value public education above just about everything.

In 2019, the 28 members of the United States women’s national soccer team celebrated International Women’s Day by suing the United States Soccer Federation for gender discrimination — demanding equal pay, and more importantly, equal pay structures with their male counterparts. Last year, Judge R. Gary Klausner dismissed the case on the grounds that the women signed a contract agreeing to a differently structured payment agreement that “prioritized stability” and health care over per-game bonuses, as well as the fact that they actually ended up making more than the male players. However, had they been paid with the same structure as the male players, they would have earned a hell of a lot more.

Why? Because the US women’s team is ranked first in the world and has won four World Cups, while the men’s team is ranked 22nd and has won zero World Cups. In order to make as much as the male players do, the women have to win practically every one of their games.

The women are now appealing Judge Klausner’s decision, and the men’s team is standing by them, filing an amicus brief in support of their lawsuit on Friday.

US Men’s Soccer Thinks Women’s Team Deserves *More Than* ‘Equal Pay,’ Since They’re Better (Wonkette)

The question is “bums/butts on seats” and TV rights and sponsorship. That’s what pays salaries and benefits to soccer players and, sadly, the women’s soccer game is well behind that of the men’s game around the world (and even in the US) in terms of popularity and filled stadiums at a thousand bucks a ticket. No cash = no salary checks. Just being good at something doesn’t mean the money is there to pay someone who is world-class.

As has been observed by contact tracers and epidemiologists, while summer camps for children have been largely free of Covid-19 issues, one class of summer camp has not: Christian summer camps.

The issue seems to be two-fold:

a) Christians are largely aligning with Republican propaganda about Covid-19. The camps are further cementing the idea that Christianity is an extension of the Republican Party, regardless of the sect.

b) Church camps seem to take the same position as churches, that they are not part of something called “a society,” and as such they don’t have to follow society’s rules (such as things like epidemic precautions). They largely argue they are exercising “religious freedom” (to kill children).

They all insist (publicly) they are following local or state guidelines, so they are either:

a) Lying for Jesus, or
b) Christianity makes you uniquely susceptible to Covid-19.

I can’t really see a biological mechanism for b) so it must be a).

Additionally, church camps are routinely having parents absolving the camps of any responsibility if their child gets sick with Covid-19.

I am not a Christian, but I would think if your church organisation demands you sign a legal release from responsibility, maybe you ought to find a different church (or religion).

Wonkette’s Robyn Pennacchia (also a writer for Friendly Atheist) weighs in on the assholes spreading SARS-CoV-2 in the name of Jesus.

Except that is not true.

Even a cursory examination through a random search engine will turn up countless articles such as this:

USWNT average attendance 8% greater than US men’s soccer team in 2019 (World Soccer Talk, December 25, 2019)

In 2019, the US Women’s National Team had an average attendance 8% greater than the US Men’s National Team. During 2019, the women’s team averaged 25,122, while the men’s team averaged 23,306.

Overall, 2019 couldn’t have been better for the US Women’s National Team. Most importantly, they won their second straight Women’s World Cup title (and fourth overall). TV ratings for the tournament for very good. And their attendance back home was nearly the best it has ever been. The trick now is to try to sustain it. With the Olympics coming up in Tokyo next summer, the opportunity for sustainability is there. So there’s no reason to think that attendance can’t be as good in 2020 as it was in 2019.

The year 2019 saw the USWNT generate their third highest attendance ever. The year 1999 tops the list with an average of 30,536 per game followed by 2015 with an average of 27,766 per game. This year slides right in behind that with 25,122 per game. (Surprisingly the 1996 Summer Olympics and 2003 Women’s World Cup didn’t move the needle in terms of attendance, despite both being hosted by the US).

The US Women’s Soccer Team has drawn consistently larger crowds than the men many years. The idea that “women don’t have as large a draw of fans” is objectively false, and spread by the usual suspects to those who don’t know better.

The women’s soccer team in the US may well be more popular than the US men’s team but that doesn’t necessarily mean it earns a lot of money.

I’ve done stewarding at women’s soccer matches here in the UK, including international matches. The lower-tier games are often free for spectators to attend (before COVID-19 changed the rules) or very low prices (less than ten bucks for a top-ranked team match or international match). TV coverage and sponsorship is much less too.

It’s unfair but until the US women’s soccer world can get spectators to pay a thousand bucks a seat and sell out corporate boxes for the big matches then the money to pay top-ranked players what they deserve just isn’t there.

Interesting bit of news, at least out of the UK.

Vegans would be exempt from compulsory workplace Covid vaccinations and employers risk legal action if they insist workers are double-jabbed, experts say.

The Covid vaccine does not contain animal products, but all medications currently go through animal testing.

Ethical veganism was ruled to be a protected characteristic at a tribunal last year.

It means any employers would risk legal action if they order staff to be vaccinated.

A spokesman for Lewis Silkin, a law firm, told the Telegraph: “Some ethical vegans may disagree with vaccinations on the basis that they will inevitably have been tested on animals.

“Ethical veganism has previously been found to amount to a belief, capable of being protected.”

The protections mean that vegans and people in other categories, including some religious groups as well as those with certain disabilities or medical conditions, could mount a claim of constructive dismissal if forced to get the jab.

msn.com

That’s honestly the first time I’ve ever heard of veganism being considered a protected class. Guess I should follow the news more.

This is not much different than a “philosophical exemption” which some states here have for vaccination. Being a vegan for philosophical reasons could be used here as an argument against vaccination.

The argument is also precisely the same as religious people who argue against it because vaccines were tested on “aborted foetuses.”

Whatever vaccine you’re getting now was never tested on an animal.

Andrew Sullivan: “We are at a stage in this pandemic when we are trying to persuade the hold-outs — disproportionately white Republicans/evangelicals and urban African-Americans — to get vaccinated. How do we best do this? Endless, condescending nagging won’t help. Coercion is not an option in a free country. Since the vaccinated appear to be able to transmit the virus as well, vaccine passports lose their power to remove all risk. Forcing all the responsible people to go back to constraining their everyday lives for the sake of the vaccine-averse is both unfair and actually weakens the incentive to get a vaccine, because it lowers the general risk of getting it in the broader society.”

“So the obviously correct public policy is to let mounting sickness and rising deaths concentrate the minds of the recalcitrant. Let reality persuade the delusional and deranged. It has a pretty solid record of doing just that.”

“The government cannot be held responsible for sickness and death it has already provided the means to avoid. People are responsible for their own lives.

Sounds like the COVID-19 “small business rescue plan” here in Czech Republic, where to qualify, you needed to have an army of lawyers and accountants to get through the red tape.

And most of that money went to “small businesses” with capital of over $1,000,000 USD. “Small business”, indeed. Yeah, most of that money ended up being distributed to the Prime Minister’s agro-empire and the rest sent to his cronies.

There is a logic to it. Which stops being useful as soon as humans in any numbers are involved. Since one obvious side effect of doing this is that you’re further eroding trust in government (why did you not protect us?) and there will be lawsuit after lawsuit as those who were infected, or are related to those who died from getting infected, will attempt to blame others for what happened.

And Sullivan misses the main point that the main way to get people vaccinated will be the employers and insurance companies requiring it.

This is what rankles me: America had a clear window to really get this pandemic under control, but between “open at all cost” policies, anti-maskers and anti-vaxers, we are stuck with it, and could wind up chasing our tail until everyone not inoculated (and a few that are) have been infected or died.

I love my senior senator (and the junior one is great too!). It is so frustrating because at one time there were GOP members who were interested in cooperation on bipartisan legislation to help with immigration, but then it became treasonous for any members of the GOP to even consider such legislation. Marco Rubio was part of the gang of 8 who pushed an immigration bill through the Senate in 2013, but then turned against it and the bill died in the House. The McConnell rule is that every good piece of legislation must be obstructed if it could help any Democrat anywhere.

…….

Wonkette’s Robyn Pennacchia (also a writer for Friendly Atheist) weighs in on the assholes spreading SARS-CoV-2 in the name of Jesus.

Christian Summer Camp Was Maybe Not The Best Idea This Year?

My grandniece went to a Jewish overnight camp — and she had to have a negative Covid test to attend. I believe they required multiple tests before she was allowed to board the bus to travel to the out-of-state camp.

Here in the US, the men aren’t doing a great job at getting butts in seats.

U.S./Mexico will put 120k in the seats. It isn’t just the people in the seats. That kind of atmosphere, and the millions who will watch on television, produces enormous revenue. I love watching the women play, but the truth is that men’s soccer has actually come a long way over the past few years. USL soccer is actually quite competent, and I don’t spend nearly as much time when the men play going “just pass the freaking ball to your own players for crying out loud!”

People in the entertainment business and politicians are a different animal IMO. They signed up to be on camera(though I don’t agree with the constant stalking by paparazzi and picking apart everything from clothing to cars to how their kids are dressed, that is harmful and just ridiculous). I don’t get why the makers of the film couldn’t be bothered to talk to a major person about their portrayal in that film. I think if I was going to write that script I would want to talk to her to get a more accurate understanding of the events if nothing else. I saw and heard a lot about Richard Jewell living here in ATL and it ruined his life. For gossip and to sell tabloids and news time. Regular citizens caught up in someone else’s mess should have some recourse about their own stories and privacy.

Watching MSNBC talking to Rep. Cori Bush about Congress going on fucking vacation and letting the rent moratorium expire. Federal relief funds for this are still sitting unused in many states. Rep Bush has been sleeping on the steps of the capitol with other homeless people and activists. She’s been homeless with little kids in tow this is personal for her. She’s not hiding behind wealth. 7 million more people are going to be homeless during a pandemic. That’s just fucking stupid. She’s also not had any contact with Speaker Pelosi either, which is not cool. I know she’s got a lot on her plate, but this is a problem that can be fixed and the funds are there to do it. I still cannot believe they are going on vacation with every damned thing going on right now. Sigh.

But they do it without using the names and changing some details. That’s the difference IMO. It’s a fine line to be sure, but again, watching what happened to Richard Jewell in close to real time, some integrity in the process is needed, because it can ruin lives.

I haven’t seen the movie Stillwater that she is complaining about, but I don’t think it uses her name, and is more about a father(Matt Damon) trying to free his daughter who is in a similar situation that Knox was in.

Stillwater is one of those “inspired by actual events” flicks. A fictionalized version of a true story.

Stillwater isn’t a movie I will go see, it’s just not my thing. And I don’t know much about the topic. While it’s important, especially if a person is alive, to not imply things about them that aren’t true, I wouldn’t necessarily consider clearing a description of events with the person involved. Imagine having to clear movies and shows made about 2016-to whenever with Trump.

Read what she said. They’re using her name in their advertising “inspired by the Amanda Knox saga”. They’re using her name in interviews.

Fake cards have fake lot numbers on them, or the wrong numbers for the place and time.

Fakes can be caught, and the dipshits who go out of their way to do the wrong thing can be prosecuted. Two American idiots owe Canada 20 grand each because fakes can be spotted.

I noted yesterday that even QR code based digital vaccine passports can be spoofed without too much difficulty, and here where I live, no one’s even checking to see if the spoof QR is legit. Hell, they don’t even ask to see photo ID to prove it’s you.

Went to a pub, they asked to see my QR code….I had my photo ID ready, so I pulled up the app, showed them the QR code, they looked it for (maybe) a fraction of a second, and that was that.

I’m not a fan of Websites which require you to use geolocation for whatever thing the Website does, particularly since that fixes my computer in Jefferson City, Missouri. Such Websites are useless here.

I live in the Phoenix, Arizona area, but for some reason, Twitter on my cell phone thinks I am in California because I get served up lots and lots of California ads. I’m not going to argue about it, because they’re mostly sensible government ads, very unlike the idiocy going on here in Arizona.

80% of eligible residents have at least one shot; it looks like Vermont is the most highly vaccinated state in the union. The governor is a Republican, but the legislature is Democratic. It would not be surprising if they removed the state level mandate — but they’ve barred any local mandates? Is that confirmed?

Cawthorn has the penmanship of a third grader.

That’s not penmanship. That’s printing. When I was in third grade, we had to write in cursive and I had a terrible time at it. (Gee, poor fine motor skills and autism, whoda thunkit? But they didn’t think girls were autistic in the 1960s.) My parents and uncle tried to bribe me to get my handwriting up to A from the D I got in third grade. I was able to get it to B.

I have much better handwriting now, but I’m grateful for cheap computer keyboard interfaces because I can rattle along at 90-120 wpm as opposed to relatively slow handwriting. (I’m always startling people on calls who hear me ratatatatatting along and are all “Are you typing?”) However, I do like calligraphy (looks around at pens on desk) and it’s very meditative to draw pen strokes.

Its an interesting question…

I suspect that when (assuming if) the money is removed from the equation, a lot of the leadership and their noise will go away.

Wasn’t there a study that one group of Stop the Steal grifters took in $15 million and spent less than a million on actual activities related their movement?
