Delta is a threat to children. Which is why I will be at the School Board meeting Monday night to argue for a vaccinate or mask mandate.

Groups headed by former President Donald Trump’s ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn (nearly $1 million), conspiracy lawyer Sidney Powell ($550,000) and two correspondents from One American News Network ($605,000) — who gushed about the audit operation while paying for it — are among the top funders of the controversial recount by the inexperienced Cyber Ninjas company, according to the records.

The unveiling of the people bankrolling the audit appears to further undermine any remaining credibility in the operation.

The America Project ($3.2 million), run by former Overstock furniture company CEO and QAnon acolyte Patrick Byrne, also chipped in, making a total of some $5.7 million paid by Trump supporters who backed his lie that Joe Biden won the presidency only because of widespread election fraud. The Arizona Senate, which hired Cyber Ninjas, has allocated only $150,000 for the process.

Prepping a KF-94 mask for protesting tomorrow. Because Mark Driscoll’s The Trinity Church doesn’t care about masks, vaccination, or having a previous COVID-19 strain run through the church last December. I have to continue to protect my family from COVID-19.

(Via NPR) This weekend, 80,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines will expire in Arkansas. There simply weren’t enough people in the state willing to get their jab — even though cases and deaths from the delta variant are rising there at an alarming rate.

”Prior to the vaccine, I was heartsick because people died and we couldn’t help them. Now, they don’t get the vaccine and we can’t help them,” says Tammy Kellebrew, a pharmacist who travels to rural hospitals around the state. “And so after every death, I go back to the pharmacy and I cry, and then I go back to work.”

”I’m angry, upset, disappointed,” says Dr. Jose Romero, health secretary for Arkansas. “As a nation, we’ve worked so hard to get this vaccine out. And not to have them accepted by the public is difficult to understand and difficult to accept.”

Vaccine doses other countries are desperate for are going in the trash here because no one wants them.

I really think there is a huge backlash building. What will it be when another million people, almost all un-vaccinated, have died? What will parents do when their children are permanently disabled by a disease that the parents themselves had the power to prevent, but they chose instead to listen to hucksters and bigots.
A few years ago, a wingnut I knew declared that “in ten years, Republicans will be hunted like wild animals!” I thought he was nuts, but now there is a non-negligible possibility that it will come true. After all, if you act like a predatory beast, you will be treated like one.

I think the backlash will be when Blue States that have been doing their best to comply (wearing masks/getting a fucking shot) are punished for the bad behavior of red states. Broadway is scheduled to reopen in September, for example. We already have to send money to the red states, now we may be forced to close.

This may be the plan all along, start a civil war. Not sure, but if we don’t point out how bad politicians like DeathSantis are, we deserve to lose.

I think if a state has more than a few hundred (at most) vaccines about to expire within 60 days they should go back into a nationwide program to distribute them to underserved areas either here or someplace that wants them and can get them into arms quickly. If Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen can feed thousands of people every week all over the world where they see a post disaster need, this should be easy. Use the same model or ask them if medical personnel can tag along with kitchens as they serve communities. It’s disgusting we’re throwing even one dose in the trash, let alone thousands.

re: #33 Eclectic Cyborg

Sure, I think a majority will stay brainwashed but there will be tens of millions of victims. The ones who realize the truth, even if imperfectly, could still amount to a very large number.
Beyond that, I think we in the reality-based community sometimes don’t appreciate just how far divorced from reality these people are. Their worldview has many limitations. For instance, they may not truly believe the Earth is flat, but they know nothing of geodesy or the history of exploration or Schuler tuning, and they really don’t think anyone else knows. To them it is just someone telling them what to think, someone who went to college and thinks they should lord it over everyone else.
They choose a viewpoint because it validates their prejudices and excuses their limitations.
They do the same in terms of national issues. The violent militia members are often compared to cosplayers. I think this is literally true, they do not the grasp the reality of what could happen, or that it could hurt them personally. That is why they are surprised and outraged at the January 6 prosecutions.
They grasp reality only when it affects them or someone they know personally. This has been true of conservatives since the 19th century at least. It is going to happen to a lot of them, and soon.

48
KingKenrod  Jul 31, 2021 • 1:48:54pm

I think conservatives see the GOP like a private equity takeover target. It has no future as the old white wealthy male party, but rather than try to make it better, they’re just going to strip it of all its parts, cash out, and leave it a dead husk for the next generation.

He can’t take a hard question to save his life. He turns beet red and gets obviously angry. If he thinks he can beat Mark Kelly for the Senate seat in ‘22, he’s nuts. Nope. Neither will Texas or any of the other blood-red anti-vaxx hotspots. With the massively increased transmissibility of Delta, essentially everyone who is not vaccinated will get the disease. That is north of 120 million people, iirc. The death rate would still be lower than last year, since the most vulnerable have a much higher vaccination rate, but that does not consider the possibility of the health care system being completely overwhelmed. A lot of people have survived covid, but doing so requires a very high level of professional health care, and a lot of it. What happens when there are 20 or 50 or 100 times as many severe cases as there are ICU beds? People who would have survived last year will die from lack of care.

If plastic disappeared, say, because of a virulent plastic-eating fungus, people would soon miss it, then grow nostalgic. A few precious samples, protected in alcohol or something, would become objects of veneration. There would be attempts to simulate it, or even bring it back from the dead.

I was actually just thinking about this important issue.

Plastic has so many chemicals that get leached out of it sitting on the shelf or hot store room it ruins the taste. Aluminum is probably the same. I also wont drink anything that comes out of a bar gun for the same reason. Quickest way to ruin a good whiskey is to run it through a plastic line.

nope, aluminium (sorry, Brit) is very, very, stable t not really going to leach much.

First off aluminum will react almost immediately forming coating of aluminum oxide so not so stable. It is also quite reactive with acidic liquids which most sodas are. This is why most aluminum beverage cans are actually coated with plastic.

Please excuse me but I rather watch NOVA instead of that other sorry excuse of a show.

I’m more into the animal shows (many of which they buy from BBC, whose animal cinematographers are true heroes).

Currently Nature is doing a multi-part series on big cats — last week was North and South America (pumas, mountain lions, etc) and Africa (why didn’t I know before that lions are the ONLY cats that live in groups? All the rest are solitary). Next week they’re doing Asia, so tigers are still upcoming…

Yeah. I was ship’s yeoman for a while and knew everything. The corruption was inherent in the system.

Sadly, from my commanding officer’s perspective, I took a correspondence course on the UCMJ. A few months later I was instrumental in having him removed from command for corruption and racism.

Amazingly, especially for the time, I was not punished for being a whistleblower. Instead, the new commanding officer gave me my choice of next command anywhere in the Navy. It was too late to winter over in Antarctica. So I asked for special forces. A week later I was in San Francisco on my way to join underwater demolition team 13 in the Philippines.

But, yes, it was all pervasively corrupt.

State Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln said he’s concerned the governor is advising people not to follow CDC guidelines when those guidelines could protect them from potential lawsuits.

Nebraska lawmakers caution businesses to consider liability before eschewing CDC’s mask guidance (Omaha World-Herald, an hour ago)

Those lawmakers would be Democratic senators.

After Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts railed against new federal masking guidance this week, two lawmakers pointed out that rejecting the guidance could void protections against lawsuits included in a new state law.

The recently enacted law is aimed at providing businesses and other entities with some protection from COVID-19 lawsuits as long as there was “substantial compliance” with federal public health guidance, including from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Nebraska Legislature approved the measure, LB 139, on a 41-1 vote, and Ricketts signed it in late May.

S.1295 (Goes to Congress’s bill tracking site).

The bill is introduced by Republican Mitt Romney, therefore the name is a lie.

It is called the Trust Act.

It would create secret committees with no public input or ability to watch, with the goal of slashing Social Security and Medicare. It also prohibits any amendments to the bill.

Fortunately, the GOP is in the minority of both houses, so it will die. It does however show Republicans cannot win another majority.

That depends on how many red states do like mine, and make vaccines damn near impossible to get.

I’m not sure about the rest of my state, but here you can only get a vaccine by appointment at a hospital (no pharmacies, clinics, doctors’ offices, &c). Vaccine distribution is limited to a few hours a week. All testing sites in the state are closed, and you can only get a test if you go to a lab and pay for it (hospitals here can’t do tests because the labs are too far away and the test must be processed promptly: At the start of this, a state car raced from the Scottsbluff hospital every day carrying tests to the state lab in Lincoln, 400 miles away).

Hope all is well with you.

Great, had a live gig, first in a long time.
But next gig is already cancelled due to Covid travel restrictions.

Yes, it’s stolen dad joke time…..

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are both in the United Arab Emirates, but they have distinct cultures. For example, those in Dubai don’t like “The Flintstones” whereas those in Abu Dhabi do.

You know you’re getting older when you come to a gathering of friends and most of the men have grey in their hair or are bald or balding.

How does the avocado fit into that scheme?

David Lemieux, who runs the archives for the Grateful Dead, often tweets his “avocado of the day” - I brought an avocado to put on my sandwiches when I got the urge to eat…so I added it for his entertainment. Super cool guy, as well as his friend @lucky_budd - who is an illustrator of children’s books - both of whom I will make an effort to meet some day…probably at a concert.

Last night’s rain didn’t do much to knock down the smoke. The temperatures did come way down though.

Currently it is sunny and N/A°F (N/A°Commie), but 81°F/27°C according to my thermometer, in smoke haze. AQI is also 81. Tonight’s low is scheduled for 59°F (15°C).

Storytime:

So I grew up in Michigan after age six. I am pretty much used to the idea the wind comes out of the west (or north for snow). As an adult, living near the sea I was used to the idea of the wind coming from the sea in the daytime and from the land at night.

It always puzzled me why the prevailing winds here in the Panhandle are from the east, when supposedly the Westerlies are what we should see here (and in fact most of Nebraska has prevailing west winds most of the time).

I finally posed that question to my brother-in-law a couple days ago (geologist and meteorologist). Could it be because we are so close to the Rocky Mountains it interferes with the local winds, or maybe our elevation out here so much higher than eastern Nebraska (the land rapidly rises about 600 feet in Omaha to near 6,000 feet in Kimball County).

Nope, he says, that’s not it. He points out it’s partially my perception (I’m trained to think the wind comes from the west so I notice it more when it blows from the east).

He also notes that the weather pattern in the Inter-mountain West is set up for east winds in the summertime: The constant desert low in the southwest combined with a persistent high on the high plains north of us in the summer forces air to flow from the east, right over us.

In the wintertime, that desert low isn’t there, and we have more “normal” weather patterns (Westerlies, plus snow plunging down from the north.)

This is their end game, the thing they have sacrificed all of their political potential for. Literally everything they have worked for has been to get an anti-abortion majority on the Court and overturn this decision. They cannot afford to fail - which is why they supported the insurrection; not that Trump is a righteous man, but keeping a Republican in the White House means they have a much better chance at getting the decision they have sought for decades.

Speaking of F and C…

I used to dislike Celsius as a measurement because it was less precise than Fahrenheit. 10 degrees change in Celsius is 18 degrees change in Fahrenheit. I have a similar issue with Kg vs Lbs in terms of precision. When someone gives me a weight measured in Kilograms I’m always thinking… at least one digit after the decimal point please!

Then I realized every 10 degrees in Celsius around the average “room” temp matches up to a different way of me feeling about the temp and it seemed perfect.

Memories of how Dad loved Squirt grapefruit soda. He’d go to his favorite tavern after work and Mike would always have a 6 pack in ice waiting for Dad. Other guys would be drinking a couple beers and laughing at Dad but he loved that Squirt! He said no beer came close to it.

Pretty much the only soda I drink. And I just picked up some diet Squirt for the wife this evening.
