If there’s one thing Republicans are probably better at, it is dire revenge. This is true at least of the traditional evil but competent element, as opposed to the evil but stupid Trump cult. It would not surprise me, then, to learn that the Lincoln Project and the Cheney Collective are already working on some kind of diabolical, heinous retribution against the Trumpsters and the Conspiracy-Industrial Complex in the event that the antivaxx pandemic kills off a large percentage of the traditional Repug electorate. This seems more likely every day, and will happen if new critical cases overwhelm the healthcare system.

I also wonder if this is the looming catastrophe the Cheneys foresaw when they decided to jump ship on the Trumpsters.

Speaking of Hungary:

Hungary ‘could leave EU by end of the decade’

Hungary could reassess its membership of the European Union by the end of the decade, the country’s finance minister has warned.

Mihaly Varga said Hungary was likely to rethink its position once it becomes a net contributor to the EU’s budget, adding fuel to the debate over its place in the bloc in the lead-up to the country’s elections next year.

“When we calculate that we will already be net contributors to the EU, the issue could get a new perspective,” said Mr Varga, one of the more moderate members within Right-wing prime minister Viktor Orban’s cabinet.

“Especially if the attacks in Brussels are continuous because of the choice of values.

[…]

Very upfront of them, to declare that once they are no longer a monetary leech on the EU, then they don’t want the EU anymore.

Top that off with their “choice of values”, and that is probably why Tucker Carlson is doing his white-power tour.

Oh dear, woke Vikings???

DNA Offers New Insight Into Early Medieval Grave in Finland

According to a statement released by the University of Turku, Ulla Moilanen and her colleagues have re-evaluated the contents of the so-called Suontaka grave, which was discovered in southern Finland in 1968 during a construction project. The 1,000-year-old grave held human remains, a sword with a bronze handle, a second weapon, and jewelry typically associated with a woman’s clothing. It had been previously suggested that the grave held the remains of a man and a woman, or a woman who had been a warrior or a leader.

The new study indicates that just one person was laid on a feather blanket, wearing furs and feminine clothing, with a hiltless sword at the left hip. Elina Salmela of the University of Helsinki said that analysis of the individual’s badly damaged DNA found evidence of Klinefelter syndrome, in which a person carries the sex-chromosomes XXY. People who have Klinefelter syndrome may be anatomically male, but may also experience breast growth, diminished muscle mass, and infertility.

Moilanen explained that the highly respected person buried in the Suontaka grave may not have been considered to be strictly male or female, based upon the variety of objects recovered from the grave. The researchers also determined that the bronze-handled sword was added to the grave sometime after the original burial.

I just signed us up for a very local event where the community is going to get home owners’ notarized signatures to repeal the (unenforceable) CC&R restriction on non-Caucasian homeowners.
The co-op that originally tried to establish the community wanted it integrated, but that was not possible in the late 1940s. They couldn’t get financing and eventually it was taken over by a local developer who also couldn’t get financing without the racial restriction. Said restriction is the most bare-bones, lower case statement possible, unlike some I’ve seen that lovingly detail who can’t live there except as a servant. But it is time for this to go, however unenforceable it may be.

Plenty of liars in the thread trying to claim the numbers of a particular hospital says she has an agenda (“speaking from a government pulpit”).

The numbers of the particular hospital cited seem to indicate something like 20% of the patients are Covid-19 patients (that’s a damn high percentage for one condition).

They’re also lying by omission (some beds are empty specifically because she said there is insufficient staff).

You also left out they are believing Christian bullshit (though you did say “Republican” and especially younger people view those terms as synonymous).

Yes it is. Simone absolutely did the right thing. She is supposed to compete in the balance beam event tomorrow. Yeah, we did “gymnastics” in high school. So I have a teeny bit of relevant experience, except for the fact that even if I wanted to be a gymnast, I don’t have a gymnast’s body (we’ll start with my being 5’10”.) I could walk on the balance beam, dip one foot down, turn, and if I recall correctly, sit myself down on it. To this day, watching gymnasts perform terrifies me. I cannot imagine one’s feet leaving the beam and finding it again.

edit: floor routines are slightly less terrifying than the balance beam.

4” wide.

In my lessons, we set a beam on the floor to do stuff, and I fell off ALL THE TIME. Even a simple somersault was beyond my capabilities to do in a straight line. Uneven bars was my least awful event, and the spotter had to catch me at least 1/3 of the time.

Fortunately, we only did a single quarter of gymnastics, but while we had a couple beams on the floor to practice on, we had the real beam too. Floor routines were OK, I think we vaulted a little bit, the uneven parallel bars were not designed for someone my size, and at least I had really good balance so what we needed to do on the beam wasn’t awful.

FFL (GOP Delenda Est)  Aug 2, 2021 • 8:05:15pm

I somehow think that if you grind the numbers that Hungary leaving the EU will not pan out the way they think it will. Once they are on the outside looking in a bunch of economic factors kick in and that is probably worse for them than being a net EU contributor; e.g. EU isn’t giving you more than you give it, but that doesn’t mean that your economy and trade/money balance necessarily improves if you leave the EU.

Though I also expect that part of why they have people wanting to leave the EU isn’t money, but it’s because some of the EU regulations prevent them from being total dickheads to their citizens and immigrants.

I was a decent athlete in junior high. So gym was always an A. Except for gymnastics.

We were on 6 week grading periods and one of those was gymnastics. I could barely do a forward roll, could not do a backward roll, and never even came close to being able to do a cartwheel.

So I would get a C or a D for gymnastics. It sucked.

I had no athletic ability as a kid which really set me up as a target in the hell of high school. But I did have a knack at chess and bridge which teachers really went out of their way to dissuade.

Remember Graduation day when jock after jock was awarded an athletic scholarship and lots of them boasted that they would wind up playing for the pros…none of them made it and a lot of them flunked out of college when their pro dreams evaporated. No, they don’t do that in high school because it takes a lot of strength. Mr. C. says he had a gym teacher in high school who could do it and showed off to the kids once in a while.

Speaking of fascists facing consequences, I have been watching the old (1985) NBC mini-series Mussolini: The Untold Story on Prime. This is mostly a soap opera about Il Duce’s family life, with just enough presentation of Mussolini’s extraordinary brutality to keep any kind of sympathy from developing. Unlike Hitler, Mussolini at least had enough of a family life to be worth some soap, though of a rather tepid variety. The highlight, as might be expected, is George C. Scott’s performance as Mussolini. He is perfect for the role even if it is not one of his best performances. A mediocre George C. Scott is still a dazzling presence compared to most actors.
Then little known Virginia Madsen is also good as Mussolini’s ill-fated mistress Clara Petacci.

100-year-old German man to stand trial for Nazi camp crimes | Yahoo! News

A 100-year-old German man accused of working as a concentration camp guard from 1942 to 1945 has been ruled “fit to stand trial” in October.

The unidentified centenarian is accused of “knowingly and willingly” being a party to 3,518 deaths, according to the Guardian. Prosecutors claim the suspect, believed to be from Brandenburg, stood guard at the Sachsenhausen camp north of Berlin. He is accused of complicity in the 1942 slaughter of Soviet captives by firing squad as well as the gassing of other prisoners.

Boulder County drug task force finds psilocybin mushroom grow in Lyons | Yahoo! News

A man and a woman have been arrested after the Boulder County Drug Task Force connected them to a large psilocybin mushroom grow at a house in Lyons where authorities said they also found numerous other drugs.

[…]

According to an arrest affidavit, the Boulder County Drug Task Force served a search warrant at 100 Eagle Canyon Circle in Lyons for criminal mischief on July 7.

Nobody was home, so officers went in through an open glass door and found a large psilocybin mushroom grow, with 555 “clusters” of mushrooms totaling just under 3,000 pounds.

In addition, the task force found about 5 pounds of dried psilocybin mushroom.

According to the affidavit, investigators also found 30 grams of cocaine, 22 grams of Ketamine, 20 grams of LSD, 6 grams of MDMA, 28 Oxycodone pills, eight amphetamine pills, 15 pills of Clonazepam, eight Modafinil pills and 20 pills of Alprazolam, which is more commonly known by the brand name Xanax.

According to the affidavit, the search also produced about 18 pounds of loose leaf marijuana as well as marijuana concentrate and some of the supplies and tools used to create marijuana extract.

Investigators also found $57,844 in cash at the residence.

My security contact in Lubbock tells me that a family of panhandlers who had been given two warnings to stay off the property, including a formal criminal trespass warning from the police, showed up again and launched their spiel Saturday. Their sign claimed they needed money for food for their child, a 3 year old they had brought along in a stroller in 100 degree heat. They were duly arrested and the child taken away by CPS. They had a new SUV and were found to be carrying $47,000 in cash. They had California plates on the SUV but actually lived in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Nothing in the media.

At the same time, Abbot knows his audience. Turner may be a brilliant, cagey politician, but to Abbot’s polity he’s still just an urban n(clang)r. So it’s a great sell in Texas.

What confuses me is how this will possibly help him be the first Para-President in history. It’s what he’s been aiming for fifteen years.

If you take on a political opponent in your own State with eyes on a national office, you damn well better kill him dead bang. Abbot can’t kill Turner. He’s in his bastion in Houston.

COVID Delta is hurting Abbot and De Santis, right now. In a month it’ll be a millstone around their necks. Neither planned for Delta because they never understood the threat and didn’t hire staff a year ago, who understood how viruses mutate, to make them effective Governors today.

BOSTON (AP) — Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was defrocked after a Vatican investigation confirmed he had sexually molested adults as well as children, has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy during a wedding reception in the 1970s, court records show.

Court documents obtained by The Boston Globe shows that McCarrick is charged with three counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.

McCarrick is the first cardinal in the U.S. to ever be criminally charged with a sexual crime against a minor, according to Mitchell Garabedian, a well-known lawyer for church sexual abuse victims who is representing the man alleging the abuse by McCarrick.

“It takes an enormous amount of courage for a sexual abuse victim to report having been sexually abused to investigators and proceed through the criminal process,” Garabedian said in an email. “Let the facts be presented, the law applied, and a fair verdict rendered.”

Anti-LGBT+ megachurch fails in ‘meritless’ legal bid to overturn ‘hate group’ status

The Fort Lauderdale-based Coral Ridge Ministries Media, also known as D James Kennedy Ministries, filed a lawsuit in 2019 alleging that the Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC) had defamed the church by designating it a hate group.

The suit also included a religious discrimination claim against Amazon for banning the megachurch from a lucrative charity partner program due to its hate group status.

The ministry’s challenge was rejected by a federal judge in 2019, and on Wednesday (28 July) the 11th Circuit appeals court upheld the decision.

In a 15-page opinion, both claims against the SPLC and Amazon were struck down on the basis that the SPLC hadn’t “acted with actual malice” by labelling the church a hate group.

Essentially, the ruling says the church has the right to their opinion, and the Southern Poverty Law Center has the right to theirs.

Remember yesterday the threat the Indian government made to sue Facebook and Twitter in US court over Atheist Republic’s Blasphemous Art Project (NSFW)?

Most folks here said Facebook wouldn’t cave because a) we don’t have blasphemy laws and b) Mark Zuckerberg has more money than God.

My prediction was that Faceborg would in fact comply because it is much easier to simply ban a minority and discriminate against them rather than fight for their rights, especially when Faceplant’s purpose is to make money, not defend people’s rights.

Facebook has now complied with India’s threat and has banned Atheist Republic in India. Users now get “This content is unavailable in India.”

Atheist Republic was not told of Facebook’s decision by Facebook; they only learned about it from other people. Zuck is also a coward.

WASHINGTON, DC—The Global Network Initiative is pleased to announce that Facebook has become the sixth company to join GNI. “We welcome Facebook as a full member of GNI and look forward to working more closely with them to advance the freedom of expression and privacy rights of Internet users worldwide,” said GNI Executive Director Susan Morgan. “Adding the power of Facebook’s community of one billion global users puts GNI in an even better place to press governments to fulfill their obligations to protect rights online,” she added.

“Advancing human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to communicate freely, is core to our mission of making the world more open and connected,” said Elliot Schrage, Vice President of Communications, Marketing and Public Policy at Facebook. “We’re pleased to join GNI and contribute to its efforts to shed a spotlight on government practices that threaten the economic, social and political benefits the internet provides.”

UP Girl’s Body Found Hanging Off Bridge, Killed In Fight With Family: Cops

Lucknow:

The body of a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district hung off a bridge for hours between Monday evening and Tuesday night, after she was allegedly murdered, and the body thrown off the bridge by the girl’s grandfather and two uncles. While the police have not said on record why the girl was killed, an aunt has said the accused had a problem with the girl’s ‘lifestyle’.

Gory videos shot by bystanders on Tuesday showed the girl’s body hanging from a railing on the bridge, as a policeman and a local attempt to retrieve it. Another video showed senior police officials inspecting the area.

Reports say the girl and her mother had recently come to live at the home of their in-laws in Deoria.

“She was on a fast and wore a jeans and a top after her evening bath. And was going for puja when she was told off by the father for her attire, but she resisted. They then attacked her with sticks, said were taking her away to get medical aid but threw her off the bridge,” said the girl’s mother.

Bad news for people who were hoping for a little romance before dying of COVID: the Apple store gave the boot to anti-vaxx dating app “Unjected” this weekend.

The app, which users on the Google Play site have described as “useless,” “painfully glitchy,” “terrible,” and “cold dogshit” — and that’s from people who agree with their mission! — first came out in May of this year. While the “Tinder for anti-vaxxers” debuted as a dating site, it also promotes businesses where one can easily catch COVID-19, a social feed and “a database where users can list their blood types.”

It’s not clear if that last one is some kind of anti-vaxxer “thing” or if they just recognize that their behavior may lead to a need for a blood transfusion at some point, as “spontaneous bleeding” is an occasional complication of COVID.

On their since-deleted Instagram page, the founders claimed Apple hated them for sharing their “medical autonomy” and “freedom of choice,” though it is just as likely that they hated them because they were beautiful.

Apple says Unjected was kicked off because its “social networking app inappropriately refers to the COVID-19 pandemic in its concept or theme.” Apple requires all information about COVID-19 come from “recognized entities such as government organizations, health-focused NGOs, companies deeply credentialed in health issues, and medical or educational institutions.” So, you know, not your kooky, Q-obsessed uncle who thinks the vaccine is a ploy to give everyone the mark of the beast.

The app is still on Google Play, however Unjected has been given a deadline to get rid of some of its more objectionable bullshit.

Recall backers try to block Trump mentions from California voter guide (Politico)

OAKLAND — Gov. Gavin Newsom has spent months framing the California recall vote as a Trump-aligned Republican power grab, but recall proponents want to block him from saying so in state campaign materials.

The recall’s original supporters want the courts to edit references to Republicans and to former President Donald Trump out of the official argument Newsom has proposed for inclusion in the state’s voter information guide, which will be mailed to voters by Aug. 24. Recall backers argue Newsom’s partisan arguments inappropriately “mirror his and his supporters’ paid advertisements.”

“The Guide is not a paid advertisement,” they argue in their complaint filed Friday in Sacramento Superior Court.

Their demand: Recall supporters say that Newsom’s language misleadingly casts the recall as illegitimate and falsely implies only Republicans are in support. They want to strip out various references to Republicans and to mute Newsom’s attempts to frame the recall as a nefarious effort to seize power.

Newsom’s proposed argument opens by describing the recall as “an attempt by national Republicans and Trump supporters to force an election and grab power in California.” Recall supporters want to remove that language, as well as references to “the Republican takeover of our state,” to Republicans “abusing our recall laws in order to gain power and advance their partisan agenda” and to how the recall could result in “handing power to Republicans and supporters of President Trump.”

They also want to block Newsom’s attempt to refer to himself as a “Democratic” governor. A judge already rebuffed Newsom’s last-minute effort to be labeled as a Democrat on ballots after Newsom’s team missed a critical deadline to list party affiliation.

A-10 Warthogs are about to operate from a U.S. highway for the first time:

So Allied air forces in WW2 had bombed out all the German airfields with runways long enough to accommodate the new Luftwaffe jet fighters and couldn’t figure out how the things were still getting up in the air.

Then aerial reconnaissance photos noticed melted patches of snow near several Autobahn bridges and realized that they were parking the jets under the bridges and using the Autobahn as the runway.

Then they took out all the Autobahn bridges and put an end to that trick.

The coronavirus is rife in common US deer

Survey results show that many white-tailed deer, a familiar sight on US lawns and golf courses, have antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19.

[…]

The real mystery, says Banerjee, is how the deer were exposed. It could have been through contact with people, other animals or even contaminated wastewater. “If there is a common source of exposure for the deer, then likely the same source can expose other animals.”

[…]

“How?” they ask. Here’s a proposition: some infected geezers playing on one of Trump’s golf courses in the northeast, that’s how.

So, there was a 400 meter hurdles race at the Olympics, and it was one for the books.

The winner, Norwegian Karsten Warholm smashed the world record that he previously set. The runner up, silver medalist Rai Benjamin, also smashed the world record and set an American record. The bronze medalist came close to breaking it.

Heck, they didn’t just trim a few hundredths of a second off the WR time. Warholm smashed it by .75 seconds.

That’s Michael Johnson territory.

Nearly the entire field would have set world records in prior Games. Many set personal best times.

Warholm would have won a regular 400m race in Britain - against flat track racers.

Sure, it might be the track composition contributing to the record pace, but it’s still up to these athletes to perform, and they kicked some serious butt.

Later Lizards. My 4 legged “owner” is demanding her morning walk and then it’s out to the “Star Dock” to start repairs on the secondary power system. Preliminary checks yesterday found that the main power transfer relay was fried. No surprise given the amount of damage done to the wiring. The new one “should” be here Friday. Today will be mainly pulling and terminating wiring for the vehicle charging system. Have a good one.

Speaking of Hungary:

Hungary ‘could leave EU by end of the decade’

Very upfront of them, to declare that once they are no longer a monetary leech on the EU, then they don’t want the EU anymore.

Although Brexit is a bit of a shit-show, I’m still finding it hard to say that it was the wrong choice for the UK.

One of the long term problems with the US is that some parts of the country are filled with nasty people, who think and act like assholes, which over the past 150 years has caused a brain-drain from those regions to more progressive regions.

That wouldn’t be that big a problem by itself, but the Constitution of the US also guarantees those regions political power by allocating two Senators per state, regardless of population or economic dependence. Those regions also continue to receive huge amounts of Federal money, which means that they are protected from the effects of being backwards assholes.

The way the EU is currently setup seems to be heading on this path.

Individual countries are free to be run by right wing bigots (Hungary and Poland), or by fraudsters (Greece and Italy) and there doesn’t seem to be much the EU can (or wants) to do about it. Having backwards regions be subsidised by regions that aren’t as backwards doesn’t seem a great long term plan.

re: #176 Danack

Although Brexit is a bit of a shit-show, I’m still finding it hard to say that it was the wrong choice for the UK.

It was the wrong choice, because the entire Brexit project was an enormous pile of lies for the political gain of a bloc of right-wing grifters. If the supporters of Brexit had come out and said that leaving the EU will make a number of things harder that Britons have taken for granted, and that there was a lot of work to do to surgically disconnect the UK, but that there were concrete reasons why the UK will be better off in the long run (and document all of that), that would be one thing.

Instead, this was to be “the easiest deal in history”, there would be 350 million extra pounds per week for the National Health Service, and that the EU would be over a barrel to continue trading with the UK, and that Turkey was going to join the EU and all the grubby Turks will invade Britain. Anyways, Brexit will destroy the EU and there will be no need to deal with them anymore, so the UK will be able to pick off the weak desperate European countries one by one. All of that was a crock of shit and now all of the UK will pay the price.

The EU is not a supergovernment, and member states are sovereign except in narrow competencies that they have agreed to delegate. It’s not an easy problem to deal with, and remember that both of those governments are relatively unpopular in their own countries, especially in the non-“backwards” parts of them. In countries that are run by authoritarian assholes, the delegated authority of the EU can be the only check on the assholes treating their citizens even worse.

Well last night folks here were talking about their childhood gymnastics experiences. When I was in 3rd grade, the kindly PE teacher noticed that I was the shortest kid in the class, always the last chosen for team sports, yada yada. There was a balance beam in the gym. She tried to get me to board it. I could walk across and even run across but that was as far as it went.

I was & am such a klutz I could never do a handspring or a cartwheel.

In high school I had the choice of a PE class in gymnastics or modern dance. I chose the dance class because AYFKM.

Newark Police officers did not fire a single shot during the calendar year 2020, and the city didn’t pay a single dime to settle police brutality cases. That’s never happened, at least in the city’s modern history.

At the same time, crime is dropping, and police recovered almost 500 illegal guns from the street during the year.

“This is significant,” says Aqeela Sherills, head of the Newark Community Street Team, a group of mostly former offenders who work to defuse violence in the city’s most violent wards. “It speaks to how reform has really taken hold in the city.”

Floor routines were OK, I think we vaulted a little bit, the uneven parallel bars were not designed for someone my size, and at least I had really good balance so what we needed to do on the beam wasn’t awful.

my pe class spent the supposed mandatory weeks doing gymnastics. kid fell off something and we thought he’d broken his neck. fortunately, it turned out he just got his wind knocked out. After that, our football coach/pe teacher rolled the gym mat up and that was the last of that shit.

When I was a child a “millionaire” was somebody with a net worth over a million.

Today, a “millionaire” is somebody with an annual income over a million.

ETA: But I’m pretty sure Billionaire is still based on net worth.

Four options that are not exclusive. Cuomo can be sued in civil court and prosecuted for violating federal and state laws. He can be forced to resign or removed by the legislature.

Only if you mean income in the colloquial sense, not the IRS sense. The wealthiest people I know had their income/salary capped at around 200k. Everything else was provided in a way that allowed for long term cap gains treatment.

2. She has (just IMO) an outstandingly non-outstanding work record as an official.
3. She is likely to be *reasonably* good as a Cuomo’s replacement (til the general election next year, at any rate).
4. (Again, just IMO) if she does end up as Governor, Hochul is likely to be just a place-holder/seat-warmer until/unless the NY Dems come up with an attractive candidate (though Hochul as an “upstater” may be “attractive” enough.).

Arizona being a “Constitutional Carry” State, where anyone over 21 can carry a concealed weapon without any training or permit, coupled with a prohibition on State and local government facilities banning firearms in their facilities unless lock boxes are provided is a recipe for disaster. Jim Jordan? Devin Nunes? Paul Gosar? Rand Paul? Josh Hawley? Ted Cruz? Abbott? DeSantis? Kim Reynolds? Kristi Noem? There are plenty of acolytes out there who are in positions of power. A few like McCarthy may just be cowards— but not the rest of them. And I’m not sure that McCarthy is truly a coward but just someone who looks to whatever will grant him more power. 2/3 of the House consists of lackeys, who have no moral compass.

Have to say that the one amusing conversation with our brother a couple weeks ago was over the new legislation that Abbott signed into law granting Texans that power. That was a step too far for him — he was vehemently opposed to the law, but not enough for him to object to anything else the GOP has done in the “great” state of Texas. He used to boast about his license and how it required that he get appropriate training to qualify and maintain one’s skills. He was not pleased that these standards have been totally eliminated and anyone can now acquire this license.

GOP has counted on running against Cuomo next year. Zeldin and Andrew Giuliani were both counting on this.

Hochul isn’t Cuomo and neither has any meaningful way to deal with it.

Who else could Democrats run? You mean besides AG James herself (which would be ironic since Spitzer was AG before going into the governors mansion, and Cuomo was AG before being governor too.

Lots and lots of privilege in both that thread and here this morning.

A “net worth” of $2,000,000 (assuming that guy was telling the truth at all) is more than the overwhelming majority of coin people in the USA can put together.

Affluence in the United States (Wikipedia)

According to the University of Chicago, the top 1% is primarily made up of owner-managers of small to medium-sized businesses of which the most profitable are physician’s and dentist’s offices, professional and technical services, specialty trade contracting, legal services. The typical business has $7 million in sales and 57 employees. With a 10% profit margin, this will place two business partners in the top 1%.

The remainder of the top 1% tends to be the classic professions: medicine, dentistry, law, engineering, finance, and corporate executive management.

People ragging on restaurant franchise owners in that thread, like Subway. You know, the 1%.
