Heeyy, here’s a single from an upcoming release me and Jack Gardiner did together! After helping him with his album and neural DSP demos we realised that working together was kinda fun, so we decided to make an album/EP together. It’s coming out on Friday 13th (next week) !

Then we had this crazy idea to ask Henrik Linder to join us for a track and he said yes. That was pretty crazy considering he’s been a childhood hero for both of us. Huge thanks to Henrik for adding a new dimension to the track!

Henrik Linder: Bass
@Jack Gardiner: Guitar
Owane: some Guitar and Keys.

Thanks to Sunniva Nilsen and Fran Cruz for filming us!

The landscape in the west is being transformed by these fires.

And the cause - the continued aridification of the previously wetter highlands of the west - is a long term trend.

Eventually, the impact of natural disasters will force some deep re-think of how we live in this country.

Trumpster family and friends keep on sending me or posting FB comments about the border and immigrants infected with Covid being released without any restrictions. The stories all arise from GOP officials, Faux News, New York Post, Washington Examiner, Townhall, and other sterling members of RW media. Does anyone have information about this issue from legitimate sources?

Won’t be long and the midwestern National Guard units will need to be protecting the Great Lakes from assholes who would pump the water elsewhere via pipelines.

adults and families, if they’re caught, are sent back. (still on special Covid-related rules, so they’re not getting the asylum hearings and such).

Unaccompanied minors are held in US custody until some US-based relative can come to claim them. (this is slow going; the Trump admin was using it as flypaper to catch undocumented relatives and deport them too, it’s hard to get undocumented relatives to trust that the Biden admin isn’t doing the same).

Trump ally announces date of next event: ‘We’re going back to the Capitol’

But now, a Trump ally is announcing his own event for Sept. 18. The Huffington Post cited the architect, Matt Braynard as he spoke to Steve Bannon on a recent podcast. “We’re going back to the Capitol, right where it started. And it’s going to be huge,” Braynard promised.

“As we continue to raise the profiles of these individuals” who have been arrested, it “makes it harder and harder for the left’s phony narrative about an insurrection to stick,” Braynard said. “We’re going to push back on the phony narrative that there was an insurrection.”

Covid outbreaks at summer concerts will be the least surprising surprise ever. My sister from WI is coming to town for the Green Day tour and wants to get together with the family the next day. I’m really reluctant to attend even though we’re all vaccinated. Can’t help but think her nose will be loaded up w/ Covid.

It’s a bad call. Do what you can to convince your dad to see his brother before, not at, Sturgis. It was a Superspreader event last year. It’s going to be Death On Two Legs this year.

Yes. I checked today to place an order in the next two days and I’d say 1/8 oz of premium weed has jumped from $50 to $72. I’m buying bulk bargains this time, trying to keep it above 25% THC.

I listened to Dr Otserholm’s Covid podcast today and was informed that my kn-95 mask didn’t do shit as long as I keep my beard, even if it’s trimmed close. Now I’m feeling like an anti-masker because I can’t bring myself to dump the (very trim) beard. I was also told that ANY stubble also zeros out the mask. Wash your hands, shave your face.

It’s all about control, it always is. The people who spend the least time in the office (assuming they have one) are trying to justify their jobs by making up BS arguments about “office culture.” But really most of those sounding off about this “need” to get people back in the office break down into one of two groups: Absentee landlords who are trying to justify the “investment” they’ve made in all sorts of employee “benefits’ (“Onsite cafeterias! Free booze! Pinball machines!”) in lieu of wages and the office tyrants who now have to justify their jobs when they can’t look busy “on the phone” or chewing out underlings for perceived shortcomings.

I have a goatee and though I keep it well-groomed, I’ve had no problems with an N95 mask (or FFP2 as it’s called here) nor contracted any illnesses.

More violent wingnuts and police covering for them.

Specifically, a Christian who carried a rock into a Klamath Falls (Ore.) City Council meting threatening to stone a Black, gay assistant city manager to the city council.

Eric Osterberg, assistant to the city manager of Klamath Falls and staff lead for the Klamath Falls equity task force, was prepared to deliver the task force’s final report to the Klamath Falls city council. But before the meeting could start, things turned chaotic.

As Osterberg sat down in the chambers, a man sat next to him holding a rock about the size of his hand.

Osterberg, sensing that something was off, decided to say hello in an effort to deescalate the situation. But the man just grew more agitated, Osterberg said.

“I could tell something was bugging him,” Osterberg said.

Osterberg said the man told him: “Oh, so you think we are all racist? You think you are the second coming of Christ?”

Then, Osterberg said, the man accused him of spreading HIV and AIDS, and called him “blasphemous.” Osterberg is a gay Black man.

“You are a sinner and you need to be stoned. That is why I brought this stone,” Osterberg said the man told him.

The man was then escorted out of the building by Klamath Falls police chief Robert Dentinger, who was in the room when the incident happened.

(more at the Klamath Falls Herald and News)

Klamath Falls assistant city manager threatened with rock at council meeting

The police chief witnessed the entire incident. He escorted the violent Christian out of the city council meeting, then let him leave without any charges such as threatening a government official, disrupting a public meeting, or threatening murder.

The assistant city manager is leaving Klamath Falls to take a job with the city of Furgeson, Missouri next year.

“As of (Monday) night there was not enough information to arrest him,” Dentinger said. “But as things change, we are going to have to talk to him.”

Observed it directly, not enough information to arrest him.

The assistant city manager would probably be safer in Furgeson.

Part of the issue can be described by anthropology. When any group feels threatened by one member or an outsider, any amount of pressure becomes justifiable to protect the group. Anything can be justified to protect the group, including murder.

It is not so much mental illness as it is misdirected self-protection. With the decline of religion in this country, we will have the same violence as other nations which have already gone through this.

It’s nice to know that, at those times when I might start gaining some small, fleeting spark of hope for humanity, there are plenty of assholes in the world to snuff it out:

tl;dr: Investor asshole had a small windfall and decided to “gift” a vintage car to his parents to enjoy in their last years. He makes sure to point out that he picked a car in good nick that wouldn’t need a lot of work instead of offloading a beater on their hands. But there was a tiny little agreement about them giving it back to him in their will when they passed on.

So he’s just recently found out that his brother and his father “secretly” agreed that the cost of any work done on the car should come out of his inheritance. And he’s basically asking if he’s the asshole for getting upset that his parents (who are on a fixed income) and his brother (who seems to have something resembling a heart in his chest) decided that he should get less inheritance for wanting them to cover the upkeep and repair costs on what he basically views as his car.

Yes, mentally ill. People don’t become mentally ill in a vacuum. And there’s nothing in the Bible I can remember about stoning gay people.

I suppose that depends on how each of ten thousand Christian sects, all of which interpret the Bible differently, interpret the lines about “lying with a man as a woman is an abomination to God.”

Manny Pacquiao posts Bible verse that states gay people should be killed (Los Angeles Times, February 18, 2016)

Manny Pacquiao is not backing down from his stance against homosexuality.

Less than a day after the Filipino boxer and politician lost his sponsorship deal with Nike because he compared gay people to animals, Pacquiao took to Instagram early Thursday morning and posted some Bible verses that support his views.

One of them, Leviticus 20:13, states in no uncertain terms that homosexuals should be killed:

“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

The 6 Bible verses on homosexuality, and differing interpretations (MLive, Advance Publications, January 20, 2019)

Three of those verses are in the Old Testament, and three are in the New Testament.

Martin Luther’s idea of Protestantism was his sola scriptura approach (reading the Bible and living that is all you need to know to be true to God).

It is pretty much a given that each person reading any text will come up with different personal ideas of what it means (ask anyone who’s ever read poetry).

To be clear, there are other Christians who view those verses differently, or assert that the Bible is affirming of LGBT+ people.

It isn’t atheists who go around threatening LGBT+ people with death, try to prevent them from having jobs or marrying or adopting children; every bit of that is based on interpretations of the Bible which go back almost to the start of the religion itself.

It isn’t the large groups of Christians who are benign or affirming of other people’s rights who are a threat to the assistant city manager of Klamath Falls; its the large groups who aren’t.

I’ve written before (a while back) about a favorite tune of mine, a single section of an otherwise unremarkable concertino by a little known composer, Salvador Bacarisse (died in 1963.)

The second movement is quite beautiful, and someone recently uploaded a recording of the whole concertino. I’ve started the video at the second movement (around 8:03 in the video):

Bacarisse “Concertino in A minor” Manuel Cubedo

Always thought that movement belonged in a movie somehow, either in a romance or perhaps a serious drama.

Anyway, if you want to play the whole thing the concertino is quite the puzzling exhibition of a composer going all over the place. The first movement sounds very classical (i.e., from the era of Mozart), while the fourth movement confuses me to no end (seems like Bacarisse was trying to be English?)

The Defense Department ignored statutory language in the appropriations laws specifying how the dollars were to be used. Millions of dollars were moved to never-before-seen ‘project lines’ created by the Comptroller and then written into the military services’ construction budgets without the knowledge of Congress.”

It means warmer and more humid air in the East Coast, which means more energy in the atmosphere for storms to develop - thunderstorms, tornadoes, and even energy that tropical storm systems can tap into.

It isn’t atheists who go around threatening LGBT+ people with death, try to prevent them from having jobs or marrying or adopting children; every bit of that is based on interpretations of the Bible which go back almost to the start of the religion itself.

It isn’t the large groups of Christians who are benign or affirming of other people’s rights who are a threat to the assistant city manager of Klamath Falls; its the large groups who aren’t.

well, according to Paul, lying with a woman is an abomination to God, but boys will be boys, so better to marry and lie with a woman than burn. Most Christians manage some nuance about this stuff.

Yesterday, the French Constitutional Council, the country’s highest court, validated most of the controversial new law aimed at curbing the spread of Covid.

Starting Monday, customers at bars, cafes and restaurants will have to show their ‘Pass Sanitiare’ (Health Pass) or proof of a recent negative Covid test before being served, inside or outside. The vax pass will also be required at shopping centers, department stores, movies, theaters, concert halls, stadiums, amusement parks and other public venues. Passengers travelling on trains, buses and planes will also be required to show their pass.

The court also validated mandatory vaccination for all caregivers, a labor category that includes health care workers and firefighters.

However, a provision that would have allowed employers to fire unvaccinated employees was struck down on a technicality, since it would have applied only to temporary workers and the court decided it would be discriminatory, since it didn’t apply to permanent workers, as well.

The firefighters unions fought hard against giving employers a right to fire unvaccinated workers and they may see this part of the court’s decision as a victory for them, but they lost on another front. The court validated the provisions that allow employers to suspend unvaccinated workers without pay.

The court also rejected a provision that called for mandatory isolation of individuals who test positive for Covid, reasoning that a one-size-fits-all requirement isn’t an appropriate solution.

In additional noteworthy comments, the court acknowledged that the ‘Health Pass’ curtails individual liberties, such as the freedom to come and go as one pleases, but that the public health emergency has precedence over concerns about that.

I honestly think two things are at work here. First is just stupid wingnuts infiltrating the county level offices from schools to mayors to city councils, etc. The second is the sane elected officials are getting death threats, people showing up at their homes, threatening their kids, doxxing, etc. There has to be public pushback, but fear is holding it back. Plus most of us have pandemic related financial and health issues to consider too. How Right-Wingers Used A Single Whataburger Meal To Blame Immigrants For COVID

In a filing in federal court Monday, the state of Texas argued that Gov. Greg Abbott (R) was justified in ordering state troopers to pull over anyone they thought was driving undocumented immigrants — because of one family’s meal at a Whataburger in South Texas.

Immigrant families, the state said, posed a deadly threat to Texans.

“Consider, for example, a family of migrants released in La Joya, Texas,” lawyers for the state wrote. “The family went to a public restaurant and began ‘coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths.’” The family in question told police they had COVID-19, the filing noted.

Nonetheless, that singular meal has now become a national anti-immigrant talking point.

On Thursday, the columnist Laura Hollis cited the Whataburger meal in a column describing immigration as “a government-sponsored invasion” and “an existential threat.”

Since last Tuesday, the meal has been mentioned more than a dozen times on Fox News, including on Tucker Carlson’s program, seen by millions of viewers.

“The Biden administration is still shuttling foreign nationals throughout our country without checking to see if they’ve been vaccinated against COVID,” Carlson said, introducing the story. “Some of them carry it.”

Separately on Fox News, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) and Abbott himself have all addressed the Whataburger scare.

“That’s exactly why I issued this executive order,” Abbott said after describing the La Joya case.

Eugene Robinson: “This is the GOP’s pandemic now. Cynical and irresponsible Republican politicians have created an environment that is killing Americans who shouldn’t have to die, swamping hospital systems with desperately ill patients, and generally ensuring that the pain and disruption of covid-19 are with us longer than they need be or should be. And they’ve done so in their own self-interest.”

“Yes, the more-infectious delta variant is driving this new wave. But vaccination and mask-wearing have the power to check that spike in cases, and to prevent those new diagnoses from turning into hospitalizations and deaths.”

Can we possibly be so stupid that we ignore all empirical evidence and insist on inflicting grievous self-harm? Ambitious Republicans are betting that the answer to that question is yes.

Massive projection. The GOP would *love* to spread Covid among *those* people. And the Democrats and libs in general if they thought they could.

And we also get first-hand experience on how countries and cultures can essentially convince themselves that self-destructive behavior is good for the nation - or at least their own little part of it that they are convinced is the “true” part of it.

(This makes reading about the pre-WW2 Japanese and German behaviors quite a bit more understandable. Marinate heavily in a constant stream of propaganda and it appears you can get groups of humans to do obviously stupid things and think that it’s the proper thing to do or support having done.)

In Minnesota, even though masks are not required in the schools themselves (unless by district mandate), the state still mandates they be worn on the buses. We’re not about to start putting our kids on those things, but that’s for different reasons than just COVID.

It’s a lab test, not a double blind test with patients to see if it actually works in test subjects.

So, it’s investigative at this point - not confirmed.

But if it works, that’ll help people who get covid19 avoid the worst outcomes.

Thing is, we have tools to avoid getting covid19 altogether: masking and vaccinations. Masking has no side effects. Vaccinations have some side effects, which are less than what this drug could do. Vaccinations also have fewer side effects than getting covid19 itself, which includes spreading it to others, getting hospitalized, or dying. We have enough people dosed with covid19 vaccines to know how safe and effective they are - and they are exceptionally so (Moderna, Pfizer, and J&J). Side effects are rare - actual real ones that the VAERS considers serious and actionable, and breakthrough infections are far less severe. The vaccines do their jobs. Getting covid19 doesn’t confer that kind of protection.

What violence did England, for example, go through? When?

Well I wonder what the Qwazy Qs gonna say about this?

Maine Republican insisted he was the real victim after his stalking arrest - then he got busted for child porn

After his arrest this Tuesday on charges of felony child porn possession, a Maine Republican who is also a member of the Bangor School Committee posted $1,000 cash bail and was released.

It’s not known if Penobscot County Treasurer John Hiatt used a school-issued computer or tablet to download child pornography, but a department-owned tablet was seized by police during an earlier investigation into a harassment complaint against Hiatt, the Bangor Daily News reports. Sexually explicit images of children under the age of 12 were allegedly found.

“The affidavit in this case and the evidence, in this case, will show that this particular defendant had at least one still photo and two videos of a 5-year-old engaged in sexually explicit conduct with an adult male,” Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Chris Almy said.

Hiatt is already facing charges for the alleged stalking and harassment of a 34-year-old Bangor woman on social media and in text messages earlier this year. He was arrested on May 14 on multiple charges that included felony invasion of privacy.

But he claims HE’S THE REAL VICTIM…

re: #182 JOE 🥓

Um. I’m an anthropologist who studied societies that become violent, and…I don’t see where decline of the influence of religion fits into this.

England had race riots because it’s was an imperialist country in decline that vented on its minority populations; it now has TERFS and Nazis and Brexit because it’s still an imperialist country in decline and needs further vents because the decline is getting worse because the country is still run by pig fucking vampires from Eton. At peak the nation was running entirely on criminally cheap labor and commodities sourced in the colonies, captive markets, and the periodic pile of famine-dead Irishmen or Bengalis; it’s recession took the form of fucking over working class people—especially those in the North, literally the first people colonized by Britain and still treated as “other”—while directing attention away from the public school sociopaths who privatized all the public wealth and cut all the social services.

In the 70s and 80s their funk was turning into vexation, and alternately shouting “We’re still an empire” and “Where did all these brown people come from?”—neither of which had to do with the decline of religion and everything to do with building a society in which your low-tier whites viewed themselves as entitled to service and deference from nonwhite colonized people who could not be British regardless of the law because to be British was to be a colonizer…but also the people of the absolute center—the Britons—viewed themselves as superior to the Irish, the Scots, etc.

Empire mindset doesn’t vanish with the empire. The bourgeoisie aren’t going to stint themselves, so the same fuckery to extract capital that happened overseas is now applied at home. The lumpenproles aren’t interested in acknowledging the bone-china fragility of their sense of superiority, so they just scramble to find ersatz versions. Both had a taste for imperial bloodsport: fucking up someone, anyone, to primally demonstrate who was the boss. This manifested externally in shit like the Falklands War and teaming up with the US to do a neo-colonialism in Iraq. This manifested internally as resurgence of the NF and soccer hooligans but also as white cops beating the shit out of South Asians and West Indians on the regular…but also in the kind of tactics that produced Hillsborough and the routine excesses of the Black and Tans.

It’s not that religion can’t be bound up in social disruption, but…a notable feature of the British Empire was that it built itself around secular bullshit. Sure, the overdressed inbred Germans wave around smells and bells but Anglicanism is the Arrowhead Farms Diet Cola of weaponized religion compared to the use of Catholicism by the French or the Spanish. Notions of civilization, whiteness, and natural hierarchy that evoked Gobineau and Spencer powered Britain to both take over the world and reify it’s internal life. The British were pioneers in pseudoscientific racism…starting with their classification of the Irish. Their postcolonial legacy is fallout of this process applied throughout the world: divide and conquer, assign one group of indigenes power and license over another by virtue of fitness, near-ness-to-whiteness.

I don’t think it’s any kind of overreach, or invasion of privacy. They announced the new no-child-porn-on-iPhone policy, and anyone is free to stop using an iPhone if they want to have child porn on their phone. Tech does not have to enable the exploitation of children.

re: #217 Patricia Kayden

What’s wrong with scanning for child porn? Sounds like a good thing to me.

Here’s a quote from Financial Times about this issue:

Apple intends to install software on American iPhones to scan for child abuse imagery, according to people briefed on its plans, raising alarm among security researchers who warn that it could open the door to surveillance of millions of people’s personal devices.

Apple detailed its proposed system — known as “neuralMatch” — to some US academics earlier this week, according to two security researchers briefed on the virtual meeting.

The automated system would proactively alert a team of human reviewers if it believes illegal imagery is detected, who would then contact law enforcement if the material can be verified. The scheme will initially roll out only in the US.

Apple confirmed its plans in a blog post, saying the scanning technology is part of a new suite of child protection systems that would “evolve and expand over time”. The features will be rolled out as part of iOS 15, expected to be released next month….

“It is an absolutely appalling idea, because it is going to lead to distributed bulk surveillance of . . . our phones and laptops,” said Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering at the University of Cambridge.

Although the system is currently trained to spot child sex abuse, it could be adapted to scan for any other targeted imagery and text, for instance, terror beheadings or anti-government signs at protests, say researchers. Apple’s precedent could also increase pressure on other tech companies to use similar techniques.

“This will break the dam — governments will demand it from everyone,” said Matthew Green, a security professor at Johns Hopkins University, who is believed to be the first researcher to post a tweet about the issue.

Alec Muffett, a security researcher and privacy campaigner who formerly worked at Facebook and Deliveroo, said Apple’s move was “tectonic” and a “huge and regressive step for individual privacy”.

So, if you innocently take pictures of your naked children, you could wind up tripping this neural net code -just like Facebook taking down the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of a naked Vietnamese child running away from a napalm attack.

If it’s inaccurate they’ll have support headaches, and have to update it. That does not mean that they should provide a platform for CP, just to avoid spending money on support. AI (really VI) is getting better and better, and this is an obvious application for it.

re: #230 Eric The Fruit Bat

It appears Apple was already doing this on iCloud, where they were supposedly training their AI model based on hashing, which by itself could lead to false positives.

Which is not a problem. A software false-positive does not get a person arrested, it just takes the time of a staffer to review. At worse, we get the thing with local prosecutors doing the wrong thing which we already had with film developers, and missteps can be exposed much more easily these days than back then.

It’s not at all surprising that a company that put devices capable of discreetly producing and distributing CP in people’s hands wants to do something to mitigate the damage their product does now that the tech exists to affordably do so.

School started Wednesday here and the next door neighbor’s kid goes to special ed. She was not wearing a mask when she boarded the bus yesterday. And the school district (Mesa Public Schools) is bowing to Doug Ducey and the idiots of the state legislature. I see those yellow school buses going around and think disease on wheels.

The school board here is meeting again this afternoon to delay the start of school two weeks due to the high rate of Covid transmission. They may reconsider a mask mandate if transmission remains high.

re: #226 Eric The Fruit Bat

Here’s a quote from Financial Times about this issue:

So, if you innocently take pictures of your naked children, you could wind up tripping this neural net code -just like Facebook taking down the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of a naked Vietnamese child running away from a napalm attack.

This week my nephew took pictures of his daughter eating the cupcake celebrating her first birthday. But first he took off her dress, so that they wouldn’t have to wash it to remove all the frosting and chocolate, which ended up adorning her face, head, and body. That is the kind of video that I’d be concerned that the Apple software would capture.

Once they kill a couple of kids, they’ll go back to remote learning. Some people can’t plan to mitigate disaster, and can only react once disaster strikes.
