The U.S. ambassador in Kabul has told staff there that four U.S. Marines were killed in an explosion at the city’s airport and three wounded, a U.S. official with knowledge of the briefing said. Two explosions ripped through crowds of Afghans trying to enter the airport on Thursday.

I mean, the answer is simple. If you have genuine data to show from thousands of patients, just publish it. Big Pharma isn’t going to suppress it, and I know this from the many, many ridiculous papers I see published all the time. It doesn’t even have to be a RCT or a multi-institutional study - if you can show your own experience with actual evidence that these patients have taken this drug at whatever dosage and have had no side effects or COVID, that’s more than enough. Even I would acknowledge there may be something there if you could show even one well-documented, single provider retrospective experience with enough patients for significance.
Great, here come the right wing assholes who will be claiming Trump would have kept those Marines alive.

re: #42 Dopamine Fish
The Afghan “ally” casualty reports stopped getting published back in, I think, 2016 or so because they were so high and it was embarrassing the western NATO military forces who were supposed to be training them — Lesson 1, “how not to be killed.” — Grade D (for dead). It was only really the spectaculars, the car bombs that took out a neighbourhood and racked up a body count in the dozens that ever got reported in the Western press and only then, like I said, well down the page after the baseball scores.
Some estimates put the total losses for Afghan security forces since victory against the taliban was declared was declared back in 2005 at over 66,000 and counting.

Texas and Kentucky on Wednesday reported more COVID-19 patients in their hospitals than at any other time since the pandemic began. At least six other states — Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii, Mississippi and Oregon — have already broken their hospitalization records.
Couple of surprises on that list. Though I’m sure whatever records Oregon and Hawaii broke were WAY THE FUCK LOWER than all those Southern states.

In real life I was one of the first to warn that the Iranians would, in fact, find a way to maintain much of the American equipment for which the US had shut off support after the fall of the Shah. This was generally the opposite of conventional wisdom at the time, which held that the Iranians would be helpless without masses of US spare parts and contractor maintenance. I was proven right. Several of Iran’s F-14s, and many of their F-5s and F-4s, are still airworthy.

I am not a veterinarian but… intestinal parasites have a problem, the intestinal structures they inhabit are designed to move material towards the exit-slash-gift shop of the organism they infest. The parasites want to stay where they are with their food supply coming to them hence their hooks and mouth parts and suckers and the like, allowing them to clamp on to the lining of the intestines and remain in place.
One way to deworm an animal or even a human is to take drugs that strip the intestinal lining tissues away from the muscular outer walls of the intestines, evacuating them in a normal-ish manner along with the attached parasites. The lining of the intestines will regenerate after a short time, the parasites are gone and all is well. If, however, the previously mentioned evacuation happens in the beauty products aisle of the local Walgreens then you can expect a “cleanup required” announcement on the store’s speaker system.

Several countries besides Iran built up large military industrial complexes of their own after international embargoes shut off, or severely restricted, arms imports. South Africa and Israel are notable examples. Both eventually went on to develop their own nuclear weapons. Interestingly enough, Iran is back on the same road now, thanks to TFG’s abrogation of the 2014 agreement.

Iranian HESA Saeqeh jet fighter. This is basically an F-5 with twin tails and updated avionics. Iran had upgraded F-5s before, but all indications are that this version is completely locally built. The Iranians have even managed to duplicate the GE J-85 jet engine, with some Pratt and Whitney features incorporated.
The original was designed in California by Northrop’s Welko Galich way back in 1954, but it is still getting on quite a bit from a jezail or a bullock cart and has been in service for several years.

I recently watched the documentary Why I Jump featuring several young adults from around the world who have great difficulty communicating (thus the title). Survivor bias. A lot of old buildings didn’t survive into this century or even the last millenium, in part due to neglect, in part due to shoddy construction, war, reclamation of a primo building spot, materials salvage etc.
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert… . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
The older buildings that do survive to this day stand out and are notable, that’s all. As for successfully building large constructions in swamps, there’s a Monty Python reference in there somewhere…

re: #186 Barefoot Grin
I have heard of it but not seen it or read the book. I do totally understand wanting to do whatever is possible to help your child as much as possible and going to great lengths to get there. Because help is hard to find and not cheap. I was lucky to have a couple of professionals sit us down and explain to us what autism actually is, not a curable disease, not a flaw caused by something we did wrong. What did work was a ton of various therapies. Autism is not just one thing with one “fix”. It’s neurological and developmental. There is no magic fix. Just a lot of daunting hard work. And you also have to accept your and your child’s limits without giving up. That’s where the promises of cures and fixes takes advantage of people grieving a “loss” and not understanding that autism is not the end of the world. Those people who take advantage and fear monger need to be publicly flogged, it’s so damaging to all people with developmental issues, I really cannot say all the things I would like to that these people deserve.
As a parent you really can’t win with this either. If you talk about how it changed your life (and it’s not always happy dance changes, many of those changes are sad, unfair and fucked up), then you get labeled as selfish. If you talk about your kid, you’re violating their privacy. I think any sort of book or documentary that embraces understanding is a good thing. I hope in the future that we’re able to grasp how much variation there is on the spectrum and we can find acceptance and support each other.

DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas (WZTV) — A Texas man speaking during a local school district meeting on masks tried to prove a point by stripping down to his underwear in front of the public.
The Dripping Springs Independent School District in Texas held a meeting on Monday to approve their agenda in advance of a special meeting to be held Monday.
Members of the public were allowed to speak to the board, each sharing why they believed or did not believe in a potential school mask mandate. One of the people who spoke to the board was James Akers, a 15-year resident of the area whose three kids are in the district, who tried to prove a visual point when it comes to masking.

re: #184 Decatur Deb
So this is why I don’t like the comparison:
The basilica 43m high which is the equivalent of being seventeen stories high (anachronistically using 2.5m per story as a base, when of course the actual builidng is massive rooms with soaring ceilings). It has a footprint of 4800 m^2.
The skyscraper is 184m high not counting the antenna and has a rough footprint (advertised square footage / number of floors) of 1800m m^2 and 58 fairly-uniform stories.
Millennium Tower is concrete and rebar and the basilica is brick, so I don’t think it’s a safe assumption that the former is lighter than the latter, even on a per-story basis: concrete and brick are pretty comparable in weight, but then when you add in rebar there’s more weight; but also the tower has 58 uniforms floors each of which is about the same mass of concrete/rebar, while the basilica much more open (but perhaps has heavier interior reinforcement like large pillars?)
Saint Mark’s is a big ‘ole building that has received whatever maintenance it needed to keep it healthy. It’s a nice big brick positioned well on its piles..and in spite of the reputation of Venice for jank the builders dig a pretty good job in their circumstances… and have been miraculously helped along by the preservation of those wood piles by salt water and mud like wood pulled out of bogs.
But Millennium Tower is a spear thrust into the ground: more weight piled more high pressing down on less space.
That right there is the quintessential armchair warrior.

re: #217 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
Their whole thing is that everything is a power struggle but also they’re not going to do the bleeding until after everyone else is drained. That people will die for their emotional needs is assumed…what is best in life is to die for the preferred abstraction of your betters. Their anger comes from (1) people refusing to die on their terms, (2) feeling shamed because a death did not provide the symbolic or emotional resonance they wish to consume.
This is what makes their language about the pandemic and the military sounds identical all of a sudden.
There’s a prefabricated cult-of-hero language with which death in the military is encoded—it’s what they busted out for Pat Tillman precisely because his death wasn’t heroic, just tragic—that allows their “you need to die so I can feel okay” rhetoric to pass un-clocked. When soldiers don’t play into that language they are abhored. When soldiers are complicated, they prefer the simpler story: the version of Chris Kyle who’s moody and tough, not the Chris Kyle that got caught lying or claimed he shot Katrina looters. It’s why they generally don’t like talking too much about PTSD and admire the “grin and bear” it types who translate it all into more aggression: being actually fucked up is filled with embarrassing and shameful actions and statements that they don’t want to consume. Dead soldiers can immediately be transformed into stories that serve their purposes.
But now we’re in pandemic and there’s no pre-loaded language to praise normal working people: normal workers are supposed to function unremarked and die unremarked. So when they try and talk about what is the meaning of death in pandemic is, the caste-system language is more obvious: you die for their convenience, how dare you question this premise.

Did someone mention La Llorona…
La Llorona is probably based on a Pre-Columbian Mexican legend. My favorite song version is by Tish Hinojosa. Natalie Lafourcade also does an interesting version with Los Macorinos. I find the Angela Aguilar version the visually most interesting.
About 10-15 years ago somebody (presumably a breeder) dumped a number of Xoloitzcuintles (a Mexican/Aztec dog breed) in the desert where they (sadly) perished. When several were later found, there was discussion of chupacabras in a number of social media sites.

I think the US fantasy is more that you personally own your employees, they have no recourse to other institutions that could check you power over them, and government exists to make that ownership smoother and safer.
Like, part of their thing is that they’re not doing the dominating on their own and being truly free amoral actors. They want a church that tells them they’re good, they want an economy that subsidizes them but also tells them they deserve the subsidy, the want blind venality but also retributive violence but also a legal system that sanctions these things.
…but that shit isn’t near coherent in their heads so I don’t think the rest of us can really grok a complete picture of their social system.

And everybody always seems to think that they will be the slave owners not the slaves.
And the Vax Idiocy is leading to the expected consequence:
As she does ahead of every school year, Karen Schwind and the team of school nurses she manages in the New Braunfels Independent School District in central Texas spent a lot of time checking every student’s immunization records against the state’s database. The nurses also checked with parents and doctors’ offices to ensure all students had received their required shots for measles, mumps, diphtheria, meningitis and other childhood diseases before classes started.
“We start notifying parents in the winter — like January, March and then again in May,” says Schwind, whose district has 15 K-12 schools.
But recently, just a week before school was set to begin, Schwind estimated about 15% of children in her district were still missing at least one of those shots. COVID-19, she says, has complicated routine childhood vaccinations in a number of ways.
“Many clinics that give routine vaccines have been converted to giving COVID vaccine,” Schwind says. “So in many places, the availability of the routine vaccines may not be the usual spot.” Some families moved, or remained in online school all of last year, making it easier to overlook the state’s vaccine requirements. And, Schwind says, in recent years, a growing number of parents have been applying for exemptions, citing religious, medical or philosophical reasons.
