From satellite image, it seems the eye of Ida is going to be just west of Lake Pontchartrain. Kenner and the airport are probably sustaining a lot of damage, but not as severely as all those communities along the Mississippi.

The avalanche-full-of-sharks bit isn’t just from comics manga: I actually saw a cheapola movie on Vudu based on that very premise.
Not sure how the resort eventually dealt with the sharkalanche, I turned it off after about ten minutes….

There is no future where computer driven cars are a useful part of the solution to our problems. Almost all futures where we don’t all just die involve massive increases in use of public transport to replace individual care use.

Oh, but that won’t work where I live you cry.

Here’s the trick: people won’t live where you live in the future.

Places like New York and Los Angeles and Phoenix will be self-sustaining, growing their own food on the vast land they have that requires.

No wait, they require the vast lands where few people live to do that.

And those few people still need other people in their areas to provide goods and services themselves.

So yeah, people will still live in areas like mine, and we will still need things like transportation.

I can see a future where things like agricultural equipment are largely automated, but that represents few vehicles.

Perhaps better electric vehicles combined with more renewable energy sources to charge them would work, but that would take much stronger government, and the rich and powerful won’t allow that to cut into their profits.

No mandatory evacuation was ordered for New Orleans. The claim from the mayor is “there was no time.”

I recall when Hurricane Hugo was days away from landfall in South Carolina. There was a mayor’s conference in San Juan at the time, and the mayor of Myrtle Beach went on television from Puerto Rico to order a mandatory evacuation, saying “if you stay you’ll die.”

At the time it was not known that Hurricane Hugo would be so strong.

Making that order allowed those in the city to begin organising the requirements of a mandatory evacuation. This statement from the New Orleans mayor seems like dodging responsibility.

If the levees hold, there will be less storm surge and river flooding (assuming the floods don’t overtop the levees, which is already reported in some places). Additionally, water which goes over a levee cannot flow back out into the river.

The stronger winds will do more damage to infrastructure. For example, in Katrina, a water tower was toppled by wind onto a business building, destroying that building and the water system of that town.

depending where exactly it comes ashore, and where exactly the storm surge is, yes.

Also, since Katrina there’s been a huge rethink of what’s “typical” construction, so even if New Orleans has the same wind, the same storm surge, the same levee overtop, as it did in Katrina, there’d be a lot less death this time around.

I’ve been retired for a little over a year now but I hated the last four months working from home. Nora remnant won’t bring us anything, but there is a chance of sprinkles in a couple of days given the flow from the south.

I’m going to work from home, because in between my mother requiring more time, and my brother probably needing to be driven to the pain clinic, I don’t need to be adding a 2 hour commute. Grrrrr.

It’s been noted by media analysts that many such articles (and those involving investment, particularly in the stock market or real property) are written by pro-business or pro-capitalism cheerleaders.

You see it in such dodges when someone like me says “the stock market only exists to extract wealth from the middle class or poor.” The rejoinder is usually something like “invest in a Roth IRA or an index fund.” That’s great if you have enough money to invest in those things.

Or, when economists were lamenting people were not putting enough money away in savings (particularly savings accounts, nevermind most people living paycheck-to-paycheck and banks paying shyte interest on savings accounts anyway). When people did pile up a bunch of money in savings accounts, suddenly the tune was “people aren’t spending enough money to prop up the economy; you should be going out and spending on goods or investing in the stock market!”

Back when I was on my village board, I made a pitch to replace our aging pickup truck which requires lots of maintenance with an electric car. Village said nope, not unless you can find someone to donate that.

Our truck requires constant maintenance, and it is rare to drive it more than two miles. (The times I’ve driven it, I wouldn’t want to go out of town with it because I was afraid I’d be walking back.)

I made a pitch to Smart USA for a free (or at least reduced price) car for our village along with an endorsement from the Westminster Mercedes-Benz dealer, noting I’ve been driving my (gasoline) car all over this rugged area with no complaints (except the wheel weights being shaken off once), along with trips all over North America.

They wouldn’t do it. (I get it, car manufacturers are in business to make money, they are not charities. I figured it was worth the pitch simply because of the ad copy they could generate from it on how reliable their cars are that you can use them in such an isolated area and not worry about breaking down.)

I was wondering why Alaska of all places with its vast distances and sparse population density…but that makes great sense.

There’s a very controversial proposal to build a road from “The End of the Road” to Skagway so we would be connected to the mainland highway system. It would be about 55 miles of new construction alongside the east side of Lynn Canal. The problem is that it would be mostly full bench construction created by blasting out a road bed from the sidehill. The road would also cross about 65 active avalanche slide areas. It would be nearly impossible to keep the road open in the winter. The State DOT says they can build it for $500 million but I think it would actually be 2 or 3 times that cost.

If authorized, this would be one of the last mega road construction projects in the United States. This is a project similar to the Glenwood Canyon I-70 project in Colorado. There are a lot of big time Highway Engineers who would dearly love to have a project such as this on their resumé. World wide recognition.

The sad part is that I don’t the volume of traffic would justify the cost. Cheaper to just subsidize the ferry system instead of building a road.

We do have the Heartland Expressway road construction going on here now (US-385), the completed section from the South Dakota line to just south of Alliance, with construction prep going on now (including the razing of Angora’s ghost town section) between Alliance and Northport, plus nine miles east of Scottsbluff to Bridgeport (US-26) including new viaducts to pass over or under railroads (the part west of Scottsbluff to Mitchell is complete, and there are a few more miles to complete west of Mitchell to Wyoming), and the completed section of NE-71 from Scottsbluff to Kimball (two miles remain to Interstate 80).

It’s not as kewl for highway engineers though because there isn’t much to blow up here besides sandstone in the Sandhills. (All of this infrastructure was funded during the Obama Administration but you won’t find anyone around here who even knows that because our local media sources never reported on it).

The fraternity was put on probation in 2015 for reports of reckless alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct among its members, and it was later suspended from 2017-20.

Fiji members were linked with confrontations with individuals taking part in the January 2017 Women’s March in Lincoln, which led to a campus Title IX investigation.

The alleged assault that prompted the protests was the 103rd rape reported to UNL Police since 2005 — and the 78th such incident reported since 2015, according to data reviewed by the Journal Star. Another rape was reported to campus police hours after the one alleged to have happened at the Fiji house.

Too many Christians think it’s “the Mark of the Beast” or some other sort of codswallop. So instead you have to jump through all sorts of hoops designed to prevent voting (no picture concealed carry permits in Texas good, state-issued college ID not good).

In my state where they’re trying to pass such a law now (allegedly to stop mail voting fraud, which the state admits has never occurred in the history of the state), counties like mine have the DMV only open a couple hours on one day a month. Oh, and they want photocopies of your license to send with your ballot. And if your license doesn’t have a Social Security Number on it, then they want a copy of your Social Security Card (the one that says “this is not an ID card”) and go find a copy machine to make it (the nearest public copy machine to me [pay] is sixteen miles away). None of those costs are “poll tax” though. Nor is the time spent out of your day. Nor is the risk of identity theft with a copy of your actual SSN card. And we don’t have polling stations out here, mail is the only way we’re allowed to vote.

Weather radio: Monsoonal rains (including the remnants of Hurricane Nora) will start tomorrow, bringing much-needed rain but also increase the risk of mudslides in burn-scarred areas of Wyoming. Over in the Panhandle, little chance of monsoons here, as outflow from Tropical Storm Ida will push temperatures above 100°F and humidity very high before severe thunderstorms set in.

I still don’t have a furnace or air conditioner; that’s now set for September. It’s tough to get someone out here even when you’ve done business with them before and payed all up front.

Yeah, I don’t know anyone in my group who wants to go back to the office. In fact, we’re plotting different ways to avoid it. Our manager kind of let it slip that he’d be ok with us driving over to the office occasionally, driving in, swiping our badges and driving out. I’m going to work from home, because in between my mother requiring more time, and my brother probably needing to be driven to the pain clinic, I don’t need to be adding a 2 hour commute. Grrrrr.

I just learned last Wednesday that they are going to lease out our office building to someone else. It is no big deal to me as I have worked from home for the last 5 years or so. So I guess none of us developers will be going back to the office any time soon.

The disturbance off Virginia Beach has dissipated.

A new area of disturbed weather in the southwest Caribbean Sea from Panama to Nicaragua is being watched for development.

By what measure? As a measure of wind strength, Ida is stronger (but so was Rita). Rita was stronger than Katrina by barometric pressure.

Size has Katrina ahead, and storm surge is where Katrina did its worst damage, both initially and then the overwhelming of the flood control systems in NOLA vicinity, which is where the majority of lives were lost.

As of right now, there’s mercifully fewer lost lives from Ida, but that could change given conditions like power outages, levee failures, etc.

Republicans are (probably subconsciously) trying to use the fact that most Republicans are White to imply that most Whites are Republican, which isn’t true. The reality is that Black vaccination rates do reflect a greater hesitancy than is true of Whites overall, but Blacks are less hesitant that White Republicans, the focal point of the aforementioned criticism.

A poll from NBC News released on Tuesday offers an interesting lens on the question. It broke out self-reported vaccination rates by a number of demographic groups. People who voted for President Biden last year, for example, overwhelmingly say they’ve been vaccinated. Republicans largely say they haven’t. In this poll, unlike many others, Whites are less likely to report having been vaccinated than Blacks…

… Yes, Black Americans are both more likely to express hesitation about getting vaccinated than Whites and (in part due to structural challenges) are less likely to have gotten a shot. But by focusing on Black vaccination rates, Republicans are simply trying to draw a false equivalence with the left broadly, using those higher rates among Whites to cast Blacks as laggards — even though White rates are higher because of White Democrats. If you remove White Democrats from the White totals, Black vaccination rates would almost certainly be higher…

Julie Smith sued on behalf of her husband, Jeffrey, 51, who has been in the intensive care unit at West Chester Hospital since July 15. He was intubated and put on a ventilator on August 1. Julie Smith is acting as Jeffrey Smith’s guardian.

According to the lawsuit, Julie Smith investigated alternative treatments for COVID-19 and asked the hospital to give her husband Ivermectin. It refused.

Jeffrey Smith is on “death’s doorstep”, according to the lawsuit. Julie Smith asked Dr. Fred Wagshul about Ivermectin and he prescribed 30 mg of Ivermectin a day for 21 days for Jeffrey. Julie also offered to sign a release relieving the hospital of all liability.

The hospital refused and that’s when Julie sued.

One of my high school friends was a minister, got kicked out of his church, fumbled around for several years at different jobs, started a new ministry. Shapley persuaded Payne to write a doctoral dissertation, and so in 1925 she became the first person to earn a PhD in astronomy from Radcliffe College of Harvard University.[5] Her thesis title was Stellar Atmospheres; A Contribution to the Observational Study of High Temperature in the Reversing Layers of Stars.[8][1]

Payne was able to accurately relate the spectral classes of stars to their actual temperatures by applying the ionization theory developed by Indian physicist Meghnad Saha. She showed that the great variation in stellar absorption lines was due to differing amounts of ionization at different temperatures, not to different amounts of elements. She found that silicon, carbon, and other common metals seen in the Sun’s spectrum were present in about the same relative amounts as on Earth, in agreement with the accepted belief of the time, which held that the stars had approximately the same elemental composition as the Earth. However, she found that helium and particularly hydrogen were vastly more abundant (for hydrogen, by a factor of about one million).[9] Her thesis concluded that hydrogen was the overwhelming constituent of stars (see Metallicity), making it the most abundant element in the Universe.[10]

However, when Payne’s dissertation was reviewed, astronomer Henry Norris Russell, who stood by the theories of American physicist Henry Rowland, dissuaded her from concluding that the composition of the Sun was predominantly hydrogen because it would contradict the current scientific consensus that the elemental composition of the Sun and the Earth were similar. In 1914, he had written in an academic article:

The agreement of the solar and terrestrial lists is such as to confirm very strongly Rowland’s opinion that, if the Earth’s crust should be raised to the temperature of the Sun’s atmosphere, it would give a very similar absorption spectrum. The spectra of the Sun and other stars were similar, so it appeared that the relative abundance of elements in the universe was like that in Earth’s crust.[11]

Payne consequently described her results as “spurious”.[8]:186[10] A few years later, astronomer Otto Struve described her work as “the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy”.[12] Russell also realized she was correct when he derived the same results by different means. You might want to look at the North Carolina Piedmont or mountain regions around cities like Asheville, Winston-Salem, or Raleigh Durham. I would suspect that you would want to stay fairly close to a major urban area as the rural areas can get _quite_ rural away from cities.

You might also want to look at the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley. Winchester has a decent regional medical system. As does Hagerstown, Maryland. Both serve the regional areas. Hagerstown’s serves up into rural parts of Pa as well. The main transportation artery is Interstate 81.

Probably good to remember that the further north you get, the crappier the winter weather gets. Particularly in the mountains. In Pa there are times when one can snowed in for days in the remoter parts.

The C.1 variant originated there.

As the article noted, it’s been a long time since that variant was seen, which made the C.1.2 variant surprising (since it comes from C.1).

The study also found that the C.1.2 lineage has a mutation rate of about 41.8 mutations per year, which is nearly twice as fast as the current global mutation rate of the other variants. The scientists stated that this short period of increased evolution was also seen with the Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants, suggesting that a single event, followed by a spike in cases, drove faster mutation rates.

More than half of the C.1.2 sequences have 14 mutations, but additional mutations have been noticed in some of the sequences, suggesting that evolution within the lineage is ongoing, according to the study.

The study seems to indicate more than half the variants are on the spike protein.

This is true. Even in Maryland there are still lots of tfg flags in Pleasant Valley along MD-67.

The most violent ones seem to be from the rural parts of the Eastern Shore, though. (The peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.) I suspect that is because the locals who had been highly isolated are now being driven out by massive, rapid and expensive development along the ocean and by large-scale corporate farming inland.

Most vaccines are designed to stimulate the immune system to go after the distinctive spike protein on the outside of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If that spike protein mutates too much it will stop being effective in getting the virus particle through the body’s cell walls so it can replicate since it will no longer be a good key-and-lock fit for the ACE-2 receptor site.

I’d hold off worrying too much about C1.2 until we see how it behaves in the wild. The Delta mutation was very good for the virus in terms of evolution hence its dominant position in infections around the world today but the changes in its spike proteins from the baseline virus weren’t enough for the existing vaccines and immune systems to stop working entirely.

I would suggest finding a nice university town… while no guarantees, the folks there tend to be educated, most have some sort of liberal arts program so music, art, theatre are around (even in a small scale) and there is usually a decent medical support structure for the kids and the folks working for the school.

NJ is probably out of the running, due to our property tax issues. South Jersey where I am tends to be cheaper than North Jersey, but it’s more expensive the closer you get to Philly. I’m sure same applies to North Jersey/NYC.

Maybe Delaware? I can ask a buddy of mine who’s in south DE. It’s pretty rural, so if you have specific health care issues, that could be a problem. The Wilmington area puts you with an hour of Philly and should be cheaper.

I moved to AZ in the late 70’s when it was conservative but still had a funky liberal alternative counter-culture scene especially in and around Tucson, Flagstaff and Sedona.

It also gave us some liberal luminaries like Mo Udall and Bruce Babbitt.

Most of all, it was such a backwater that just about anybody who wanted to move there could get established and if you did your thing well you could live decently.

And even the good ol’ boys did not really care what you were doing as long as you were making an honest living.

Alas, the place has gone full-on crazy conservative since then, and the few refuges for the sane are terribly pricey.

The places I suggested are all along the outer periphery of the “Great North Eastern Megalopolis”. The urban centers that I mentioned are growing and prices rising. But, at least as of a few years ago, there were still areas outside the towns that were not yet gentrified.

I did not mention Charlottesville, Va (Home of the University of Virginia) because development there seems to be heavy. But it reportedly has excellent medical facilities.

Hagerstown is interesting in that the Hagerstown Valley (part of the Great Appalachian Valley, which continues northward as Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania, and southward as Shenandoah Valley in West Virginia and Virginia) has a lot of little towns that are just now starting to grow after years of decline. And beyond these are still a lot of agricultural areas. So finding decent real estate prices may not require going as far out as other areas.

Heh, while Hagerstown Mall still has the same tractor display that it did 40 years ago, the area has really developed. Lots of trucking and other companies have warehouse and maintenance facilities there.

Another possibility might be the Martinsburg, West Virginia region between Winchester and Hagerstown.

I just learned last Wednesday that they are going to lease out our office building to someone else. It is no big deal to me as I have worked from home for the last 5 years or so. So I guess none of us developers will be going back to the office any time soon.

I wouldn’t entertain a job that required me to go into an office on a regular basis. I’ve been working remotely for more than 20 years (often with the occasional in office meeting). The thought of going into an office is such a turn off to me I’d rule it out immediately, even at a significant salary increase. And now? They could double my salary and I’d rule it out. The only thing I see when I’m around people is little Coronas around each person’s head and my wondering if they’ll be the person who winds up killing me.

There’s a whole humanist… I’d call it a denomination if it was religious, but it’s not… organization? movement? community? with a bunch of activist groups, excellent private schools, etc.

Yes, the taxes are a little high, but other fees like auto registration are lower than what you’re used to down south.

All the places we’re talking about seem to have that “issue.” Even if the hurricanes don’t drop in every other year.

Yes, for example, the small liberal arts colleges in Indiana such as Earlham and DePauw are in otherwise solidly R areas where people will casually ask which church you go to. If you’re white, it can be ok if you just stake out your own life and find a niche. Oh, and not much happening in the summer when the kids are gone.
