Read/McQueen - Send Off (Live Performance Video)
From the album ‘Read/McQueen’ (GroundUP, 2021)
Stream/Buy: https://orcd.co/readmcqueen

Chris McQueen - “Send Off” is the last song we wrote in the batch of songs that became our self-titled GroundUP debut. Rather than starting slowly and building, we thought it could be cool to have a song that just kicks right in at full speed. Of course then there’s the question of where you go from there… after trying a lot of different approaches we found a sort of (for lack of a better word) “Americana” tune that felt like a natural extension of the flashy intro. Live shows are still a little weird right now, but we were really happy to be able to do this in-person + livestream gig at the East Austin Piano Shop. A big thank you to Collin Shook for the high quality video and audio production!

Recorded and filmed by Collin Shook at the East Austin Piano Shop in Austin, TX, August 17, 2021

A couple of very deep cuts: “In town to record a new version of “Hungry Heart” for an upcoming EP release, Bruce joined his friend Wolfgang Niedecken and his Leopardefellband for six(!) run-throughs of Bruce’s 1981 single. In between takes, Bruce and Wolfgang’s band treated the crowd to a selection of Dylan and Stones covers, the last of which was “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

Here’s what I am hoping the President would say in public:

” We reject the effort by Texas Republicans to enforce their religious beliefs by taking away the rights of others. We reject the instillation of theocracy that the Texas Republicans are attempting. Such efforts are un-American”.

Yes, I want him to utter “religion”, “theocracy” and such out in the open.

We need to take the covers off of the real conflict.

It’s minor compared to the facilitation of abuse by the state built into this snitch system, but…

…this is going to cost, because this shit has to be investigated and sometimes even carried through to court.

That’s time and effort and wages that somebody fucking pays for,

re: #337 PhillyPretzel

Clearly “Adam” does not know his history. As per Wiki it was the Great Famine.
en.wikipedia.org

Which was perpetrated by England by forcing the export of Ireland’s crops even during the potato blight.

England perpetrated a mass-starvation campaign on Ireland. From the article you shared yourself:

From 1846, the impact of the blight was exacerbated by the British Whig government’s economic policy of laissez-faire capitalism.

It was also perpetrated on the majority-Irish speaking areas of the country.

This goes back to yesterday’s discussion of Edmond Burke. He was the Whig Party’s strongest proponent of free-trade with Ireland, and the convenient knock-off effect is it depopulated about 20% of the country.

Conservatism kills. It always has.

President Biden called a Texas law prohibiting most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy a blatant violation of a woman’s constitutional right to abortion established under the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling.

In a statement Wednesday, the president said his administration is committed to Roe v. Wade and will “protect and defend that right.”
…snip…
In a separate statement, Vice President Harris also decried the Texas law, describing it as an “all-out assault on reproductive health” that “effectively bans abortion for the nearly 7 million Texans of reproductive age. Patients in Texas will now be forced to travel out-of-state or carry their pregnancy to term against their will.”

“States with huge corporations like Georgia, Texas, Florida, etc. How do they intend to compete in a global market when their state governments are hellbent on turning their societies into proto-feudal backwaters? AT&T, Dell, American Airlines, Waste Management, all are headquartered in Texas. They can’t be happy about this caveman shit legislation.”

Capitalism has no social conscience. If the wind blows a certain direction, you can be sure the companies will go that direction as well. A long time ago, companies never said a word when blacks were discriminated against because it would cost them business. Fast forward to today and companies left and right are pro-gay, pro-BLM, etc. Don’t think it’s because they’re doing the right thing. They’re doing it because that’s where their share is.

Northern NJ is getting serious rainfall - 5-8 inches out of this event. We’re in the heaviest rain at the moment, and there has been some thunder but the wind has been generally light.

Let’s keep it that way. As it is, the rain is causing flooding all over the region. Flood and weather watches/warnings/emergencies are lighting up the Accuweather screens light a christmas tree.

People mocking Rogan for being a doof taking stupid meds are hitting the wrong note.

The right note to hit is that he’s able to throw money at the most expensive treatment available, the one that most people can’t get, but doesn’t even acknowledge that that is different from taking OTC crap.

He’s a fucking French duke posturing as though he’s toughing through a disease while getting concierge medicine that’s literally just pre-made antibodies.

I think it’s the right note. Rogan is obviously combining the antibodies with snake oil in an effort to validate the snake oil. He is not a doof but he is targeting people who are, and many of them will fall for it. It reminds me of those people who credit any and every break generated by human agency to divine intervention. The antibodies could well pull him through, but that’s not where he intends to put the credit. Wait and see, assuming he survives. If not, we can always send thoughts and prayers.

Back when I was much younger, I took some classes in psychopharmacology.
One instructor’s primary issue was drug interactions. He noted that the human body is a dynamic system which really complicates predicting how multiple drugs would interact at any given time.

He’d have gone ballistic at the folks taking the “shotgun” approach to treating an illness with a host of different drugs, especially without careful medical supervision. And I share that opinion.

Erickson’s talking that way precisely because his people just put in law a system that polices every single woman that could be pregnant, and everyone that could be helping a pregnant woman, with a network of paid informants that aren’t in any way vetted in their reliability.

He has to declare his opponents to be ultimately depraved in some cryptic, symbolic way because otherwise he’d have to reflect on the mounting wickedness of his own position, the way that when it works it’s cruel and when it doesn’t work it feeds the worst possible forms of depravity.

If everyone else is a Satanic Babykiller (TM Fred Clark) then merely providing state funding for a cartel of underwear-stealing, tampon-sniffing extortionist perverts is necessary.

In GA, 95 percent of eligible people are now registered to vote. Much of this is due to the work of a badass woman, Stacey Abrams, who trained more than a few bad ass women(and men) to get out the vote. Keep pissing women off and drive us to the polls GOP, fuck you. This will cause a backlash, I hope Texans can figure out a way to fight back. The precedent being set here is dangerous and stupid.

This also allows for endless pestering lawsuits by prolife groups.

Basically legal trolling that will create enormous bills for anyone they target…the point being to target any women’s health org, nurse, or physician they suspect and drive them out with mounting bills.

Legalizing and normalizing SLAPP law.

I’m tempted again to defect from Texas, but I want to stay and fight it out until we turn it blue. This means a lot more than waiting for the immutable force of demographics. The Repugs are pulling out all the stops to retain power even as a shrinking minority. Their every action seems directed toward that goal, and they are getting away with it.

Texas has one of the lowest turnouts in elections of registered voters because of various obstacles that hinder voting. It is quite possible that Texas would be blue today (at least for statewide elections) if not for the deliberate hindrances placed in preventing people from voting. How can you take control and stop them if you are unable to vote and the current SCOTUS approves of these malicious attempts?

I truly hope these assholes are underestimating how much hurt and anger women are feeling about this. Other state’s forced birth groups are all gleeful about this and the laws are going to come once this is allowed to stand.

The problem is that women (white women in particular) are, and have been, a large part of how this sort of misogyny continues to win out, year in and year out. They are all too willing to help and support this kind of shit for pure ideology, as well as many knowing that they won’t be the sort of women that will suffer the most under laws like these. There’s no doubt going to be backlash, but it’s not going to be monolithic, and might not be enough to overturn just how much institutional support this sort of codified misogyny seems to have.

I mean, part of it seems to be just how many roadblocks can be put up for voters before it does just become too much to fight back against even with all effort? That seems to be a part of what’s happening in Texas. Increased engagement can only outpace suppression up to a point before roadblocks really do just become insurmountable, and it seems like Texas might have figured out just where that threshold becomes unbeatable.

Like a fucking ghoul would do.

It’s going to be a bad day. Don’t mark it.

“Patriot Day” (September 11) was passed through the House and Senate and signed into law by President George W. Bush. The bill was originally brought in October 2021 by Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY).

The flag is mandated to be placed at half-mast throughout the nation and is now part of the Flag Code.

He noted a lot of journalists died in that war, but them’s the breaks when you’re trying to make a name for himself.

The remains of Ida are dragging moisture in from the warm Gulf Stream waters to the east. You guys are in the rain shield, but I’m glad the ‘naders have slacked off. That was some nasty shit around Philly/Berlin/Trenton this PM.

Nope, nope, nope. Or maybe it was *me* who hadn’t changed (A bit of therapy revealed that neither one of us had changed and we were still doing the co-dependance tango. So I worked really hard to take the edges off of my innate Meyers-Briggs ENTP designation. I did pretty well.)

I got into politics as a side deal in my off-time as a working field geologist, and worked on two Ann Richards campaigns. She Who Must Be Obeyed went to the LBJ School of Public Affairs with Ellen, Ann’s daughter who lives up the street. Got to know Mollie Ivins through her, who lived the next neighborhood over and was a delightful drinking partner and an absolute Menschette.

Bought our house in “97 down here in Bouldin, in the ‘04 for $152,000 which is now worth north of $1.2 Million. I was President of our Neighborhood Resident’s Association back in the early aught’s when we we put together our Neighborhood Plan (adopted as code).

My neighborhood is one of the most proactive in this City, involved every land-development/wholesale rezoning fight, taco truck friendly, and Section 8 accepting in the City.

You want us to take Afghan refugees? Yes please! Our diversity has been one of our strengths.

So, why should *we* leave? This is our home. Our ‘hood. Our City.

We, as a little blue pimple in Texas, will persist. We will abide. We will fight for justice.

And we, eventually will kick these bigots to the curb. They are losing this fight one funeral at a time.

Ketamine has shown some promise in treating severe depression and ptsd. But it’s done in micro doses under the care of a mental health care provider who is qualified to do this. Veterans and survivors of trauma have reported good results in the right settings and under the right care.

I would guess, since wingnuts think mental health issues are a weakness, they also think ketamine is a bullshit cure liberals use just to get high. Or something. Who knows with these stupid fuckmuffins?

If the coming rapid ban of abortion in half the states doesn’t energize Democrats to the polls in the midterms, I don’t know what would. Have been watching the CNN reporting — and have to believe that the remake of “Day After Tomorrow” (you know that they will be doing that!) will focus on flooding rather than a new Ice Age.

But have another question based on my ignorance of climate and weather patterns: Could we in the Midwest be struck by such torrential rains from remnants of a hurricane that took a different path?

Also — will this weather catastrophe overtake Afghanistan as the primary news story?

But my parents aren’t Iraqi. We’re not from Mosul. My hometown isn’t Raqqa. I was born in Wichita, Kansas, USA. I came of age at the height and heart of the “Abortion Wars”—an all-American terrorism campaign waged in the name Christianity. My childhood saw family friends in Kansas shot by the Army of God in the name of Jesus. Decades later and oceans away from the Great Plains, I would see friends in Syria beheaded by ISIS in the name of God. So from the beginning, remember this: the stories, lessons, and warnings I recount here—I understand them in all their painful complexities: personally, physically, morally, intimately. Viscerally.

Terrorism in the name of religion is as American as apple-pie. (my emphasis) Allow me to follow one cliché with another. “One man’s terrorist is another freedom fighter.”

Have you heard the name John Brown? Born in 1800, the devoutly religious Brown worshipped alongside Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Far more radical, John Brown was a militant Christian abolitionist in every sense of the term, committed to the overthrow of slavery as an institution, by any means necessary—in his view, armed insurrection. During a period of confrontations known as Bleeding Kansas, which precipitated the American Civil War, John Brown came to Lawrence, Kansas, close to the Missouri border—dividing line between the “free states” and “slave states.” Representations of him are ubiquitous in the college town (my own, in fact) where to this day, several businesses proudly carry the name “Free State.”

ETA: I never got into Nirvana. I left the country for a couple of years at the end of the 80s when The Replacements were the “last band that mattered” and came back when Nirvana and grunge were the thing. It never took for me.

7/11 is my best friend’s husband’s birthday so that’s my celebration.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was a cool song to hear on the radio but when a coworker loaned me the CD, I didn’t like it much and I told him I thought it was kind of a dumb band. I’ve come around a bit, but it’s not a band I have to listen to now. I was in my late 30’s when it came out so I had already sobered up and was past my headbanger days (I headbanged to Deep Purple).

Repubs go into every election knowing that even some of their worst critics will, at the end of the day, concede that it is better to keep them in office than to allow a Dem to be elected. If they cannot succeed in knocking out a “RINO” in the primaries, then they will get 99% of what they want by voting for them than sitting out the election.

Dems instead work with the handicap that their worst critics will not only never be satisfied, but will actively work to run them out of office right up to Election Day. And then believe that their winning reelection means they “owe” something to those very same critics. Worse, if they win even a single Repub vote on Election Day, they will face endless op-eds in major papers about how they must “moderate” their own views to appease that one Repub.

What is this nonsense showing the “left” taking ketamine? It’s body builders — aren’t they equally likely to be on the right as the left?

Just to note that ketamine is officially approved by the FDA in a nasal form for treatment of otherwise treatment-resistant depression.

fda.gov

Also, there’s a legal gray area where some psychiatrists have set up practices with ketamine infusions for intractable depression. Ketamine appears to work for some but (a) has to be redone every month or two, (b) are not cheap ($400-$800 per treatment) and (c) not covered by insurance. I casually looked into it because I take a pharmacy (ok, three different meds) to keep chronic major depression in check. The cost of the three meds (covered by insurance) plus the prescriber visit (not covered by insurance because I went off-plan) are significantly less than ketamine. However, if my depression was intractable and not treatable, yeah, I’d look into it more closely.

tl;dr Ketamine has legitimate uses and Sully can STFU.

Again, the problems I’m seeing is that I’m seeing a lot of those younger voters being motivated to spite not the GOP who passed this shit, but the Dems for ‘not fighting it’ or not waving a fucking magic wand to stop it all, and instead withhold their votes as if the Dems’ doom will make the case for progressives stronger. Between that, and the general fact that our system seems hardwired to ensure Dems, even when we win, will never have enough time to fix the damage before we’re given the boot for the country’s rightful heirs in the GOP, that it will only get worse, and worse, before it gets even worse, especially with the courts the way they are for at least a generation and a half.

It literally just feels like we’re in quicksand. And the more we fight, the more we just sink because the country is hardwired for arch-conservatism forever now.

I reflected today that my reproductive life is bookended with Roe v. Wade announced when I was 13 and my last Pap smear done today at age 61. (I still hurt, I’m never getting another Pap for as long as I live.)

What terrifies me is Griswold v. Connecticut (1964) being overturned and birth control becoming an absolute free-for-all disaster.

That said, maybe the way to attack anti-abortion laws is to take them on as imposition of religion under the First Amendment. I honestly don’t know how that would work, but it’s got to be worth a try.

I honest to god hope you’re right. Because it feels like the sheer amount of roadblocks are becoming insurmountable, and the country is just forever willing to blame Dems first and foremost for anything while the GOP skates by on everything. The American Revolution, the US Civil War, and the Russian Revolution for example were nowhere the mass casualty (like multiple-millions) events that they could have been, because back then 95% of the involved populations were people that lived on or owned farms that they worked on, and got water from a well on or near their property. They didn’t really have to worry about the shipping, transportation, or power distribution infrastructure failing or stores not being open.

In 2021 I’d bet that’s like 1% of the population if that.

Got an alert on my phone a few hours ago. Evacuation order for people living along Pickering Creek in Montgomery County.

(Northwest of Philadelphia. The creek is a tributary of the Schuylkill River that enters it a little ways north of Valley Forge.)

I can only surmise that there is concern about the dam on the creek since there is a reservoir there.

Edit:
That appears correct since I found a website saying that the evac there was for downstream of the dam.

Also calling for evacuations in places along the Delaware River (Yardley). And the Schuylkill River itself is supposed to hit 6’ over major flood stage today in Center City.

Some good news on Covid-19 breakthrough infections.

In the Lancet study, researchers in the United Kingdom analyzed data from a project called the ZOE Covid Study, where users report symptoms, vaccination status and other demographic information daily via an app.

The researchers looked at data collected on more than 1 million people from December 2020 through July 2021, a period that spanned both the alpha and delta variant waves in the U.K. Participants received two doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine.

Overall, less than 0.2 percent of the participants reported a breakthrough infection, with such cases more likely in people already considered to be vulnerable, including older adults or people with underlying illnesses.

When breakthrough infections did occur, most were mild — just 6 percent of people with breakthrough infections reported symptoms. What’s more, vaccination was shown to cut the risk of hospitalization by more than two-thirds. ?!

I don’t wish to engage on this deeply (at least at this time.) But, barring a relatively short outage of power, transportation, etc. how quickly do things start getting dicey for a chunk of the rural population once these things are gone? e.g. how easily can farms and such move back to older methods if there isn’t fuel and parts available? Are there sufficient seeds, generators, etc. to provide for clean water, medical needs, etc.

Yes, cities will be messed up by such a catastrophe much sooner than lower population density rural areas. That is to be expected since the cities are pretty much totally dependent on the advanced technology, established infrastructure, and so forth.

But how readily will the rural populations get back to “basics” as compared to a decent number adjusting or competing for the resources that facilitate that process? And I also doubt that as many of these people are educated and “ready” to make those adjustments as think they are.

The far ends of the spectrum both have revolution fantasies, and both fantasies are ridiculously simplistic and devoid of realism.

The far-left keeps believing that their “revolution” will play out in one of two ways: Either voters will get so fed up things just getting progressively worse that they’ll march to the ballot box in such numbers that it’s impossible to prevent their candidates from winning or that those same people will just bypass the ballot box and march in vast numbers to the seats of power in this nation and force elected officials to address their grievances.

By contrast, the far-right think their own “revolution” will play out in a fairly straight-forward way: Millions of “patriots” will take up arms and take the government by force. In their fantasy, LEO and the Armed Forces will either choose to join the “patriots” in their fight or will simply lay down their arms and refuse to fight. Basically, 1/6 was a bit of a dry run for this “revolution,” hence why there was and is still a lot of animosity between the MAGAts and the LEO who either stayed at their posts or even actively tried to stop the invasion of the Capital.

But the biggest fantasy of all? That when these “revolutions” occur, they’ll achieve 100% of their goals and America will look exactly like what they want instead of turning into anything between a military dictatorship and an authoritarian oligarchy.

Back in the XIX Century, if you broke your foot you had a good chance of dying. You couldn’t do things like hunt or plough. Childhood diseases took the lives of many children just for one to become an adult. Life was brutal and frequently short.

The Great Depression caused the loss of a lot of farms because they were heavily indebted to eastern banks, plus problems with the gold standard.

If you had a general collapse of society, banks aren’t going to be a problem, and someone with a whole section of land will no longer need to farm the whole thing to feed a single family.

Joe Biden ‘holds grudges’ and will punish Britain for Afghanistan criticism, allies say (a load of crap from The Telegraph, Nick Allen, Washington editor, August 29, 2021)

Joe Biden “will remember” comments about his mental acuity emanating from senior figures in the UK, and will “bear a grudge” against Britain, sources told the Telegraph.

It came after Cabinet insiders were quoted as suggesting the US president “looked gaga” and described him as “doolally” in the wake of the fall of Kabul.

“The Brits have their view. But they should be careful. What’s been said is offensive and he will remember it. He actually has a long memory,” a US source told the Telegraph.

“It’s always been his way that if somebody says something really bad to him, or about him, he doesn’t speak to them again. He does bear grudges. Boris Johnson should know that.”

“Doolally” is British slang for “deranged” or “feebleminded.”

If you had a general collapse of society, banks aren’t going to be a problem, and someone with a whole section of land will no longer need to farm the whole thing to feed a single family.

At the same time, if there were a general collapse of society, you’d probably be under strain just to farm enough to feed your family. Societal collapse means the collapse of stable currencies and mediums of exchange, replaced with bartering and exchanging labor for goods. Stockpiles of processed goods will quickly dwindle as supply chains break apart, how quickly they’re depleted depending upon whether or not somebody imposes rationing. That includes refined fuels like gasoline and diesel, as even those refineries that don’t shut down will likely lack means to move their end products to market.

You’re talking tight margins dependent upon raw manpower, a scenario that’s rife for immediate failure if one or more of those in the household suddenly injure themselves or develop an illness that requires more than just a day or two of bed rest.

In the XIX Century due to the shortage of specie on the High Plains, barter was the norm for everyday trade.

Preservation of food has existed for centuries, whether drying, canning, salting, &c.

As for the raw manpower falling apart in the event of injury or illness of a family member, that’s the “brutal and short” part.

Small communities will still work together as they always have, but it is likely they would revert to very rigid heirarchies of who’s in charge, who’s not, and who’s shunned.

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Wednesday that the state is bringing back a transfer center to help overstretched Nebraska hospitals find places to send patients.

The move is aimed at helping hospitals cope with a new wave of COVID-19 patients, driven by the spread of the delta variant.

Angie Ling, incident commander with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said the center will help relieve some of the stress on hospital staff by taking over the job of making call after call for an available bed.

“Our medical staff are hurting something fierce right now,” she said.

At a press briefing, Ling said Nebraska’s larger hospitals are seeing occupancy rates of 85% to 100% on a daily basis, between COVID patients and people with other types of health problems.

Nebraska vaccine refusnik dies.

He contracted Covid-19 in mid-May, was hospitalised in June, and died Monday.

He appeared on television in Omaha just before he died, urging people to get vaccinated.

Mike Leick, who was a controller for Marathon Ventures, was in good health before he became ill. He didn’t really like to go to the doctor and had never been hospitalized, said another of his daughters, Erin Leick of Omaha.

But during his second doctor’s visit this spring, his physician told him he needed to go to a hospital. He drove himself to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, stopping to catch his breath on the walk from his car to the emergency room doors. He was admitted June 1.

On his third day in the hospital, Amber Leick said, her father mentioned that he regretted not getting vaccinated. He had been researching the vaccines, and his boss and a friend had been working to change his mind about them. He told his family he felt he would have gotten the shots eventually.

“He just wanted to make sure he had all the information and it didn’t go against his core beliefs as a person,” Amber Leick said.

All five of his children have been vaccinated.

“He just wanted to make sure he had all the information and it didn’t go against his core beliefs as a person,”

is fractally stupid. Not even one person in a thousand is actually qualified to intelligently assess primary information about the vaccine’s risks and benefits.

And WTF is this nonsense about “core beliefs”? That ‘concern’ is probably some anti-abortion stupidity about dead babies from abortions being used to make vaccines.

Further down the article, it says he will have a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Omaha, indicating he is a Catholic. In addition, Creighton University is a Catholic private college.

Merck and Pfizer both announced the start of trials to test oral antiviral medications targeting Covid-19 on Wednesday, highlighting a growing interest in the market for therapeutics for the coronavirus.

Pfizer ‘s (ticker: PFE) trial is a Phase 2/3 study of an oral antiviral known as PF-07321332 in symptomatic adult Covid-19 patients who aren’t hospitalized and aren’t at risk of progressing to severe illness. The trial is in addition to one the company began in July, testing the same drug in nonhospitalized patients who are at risk of progressing to severe illness.

Merck (MRK), meanwhile, along with its partner the private company Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, announced the start of a Phase 3 trial of its oral antiviral molnupiravir as a post-exposure prophylaxis for patients who live in the same household as a person with symptomatic Covid-19.

The wave of Covid-19 therapeutic trials comes amid a growing consensus that the virus that causes Covid-19 isn’t going away, and that the disease will continue to pose some level of threat for the foreseeable future. That could create a substantial market for Covid-19 therapeutics, which have so far received little attention in comparison to the vaccines.

Did Pope Francis not come out in favor of the vaccine?

Yes, he did.

The Archdiocese of Omaha also came out in favour of vaccines, but with a weaker statement than they could have.

Catholics have raised a number of questions regarding the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for COVID-19.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and U.S. bishops have made it clear that it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process if there are no other available vaccines comparable in safety and efficacy with no connection to abortion.

If it is possible to choose among a number of equally safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine with the least connection to abortion-derived cell lines should be chosen. If a vaccine with no connection to abortion-derived cell lines is not readily available, vaccines that used such cell lines only for testing would be preferable to those that use such cell lines for ongoing production. Such choices may not be possible, however, especially in the early stages of vaccine distribution.

That little dodge in there: “Such choices may not be possible … in the early stages of vaccine distribution” is needlessly confusing and could induce doubt or delay in a Christian who takes his science cues from an archbishop over a physician.

I suspect that’s where this guy’s doubt and delay came from.

The statement is further weakened by the number of times they tossed in “aborted foetal cell lines.”

Christians have been trained for decades to recoil at those words. Repeating them in the statement intended to make a moral case for vaccination is weakened by that.

ATLANTA (WGCL) - An 18-year-old student-athlete was trapped and crushed when an elevator in an Atlanta apartment building fell, taking him down with it.

JauMarcus McFarland, 18, died Tuesday afternoon in a tragic elevator incident at a student housing building in Atlanta. The football player was a student at Champion Prep Academy, a program that bridges the gap between high school and college for athletes hoping for scholarships.

One building resident says she’s been complaining about the elevators and took a picture of the inspection certificate last month in case something ever happened. The certificate shows that the last inspection was August 2019, and one was due August 2020.

Property manager Nathan Phillips released a statement saying the elevator was not due for its five-year inspection until 2024 and had been serviced as recently as last week. He also claimed that sixteen students were on the elevator at the same time, exceeding its weight limit, and that the elevator remains closed until further notice.

With anti-abortion groups across the country setting up tip lines already to make money off this, it won’t be long before some wingnut brings a case in civil court.

The next step would be to challenge the law after a suit is filed. I don’t foresee the court striking down the six-week portion, instead narrowly ruling that individual actions by a third party cannot be brought. They could also rule in that singular case an action cannot be brought, requiring repeated cases.

They still won’t do it. It’s not the Democrats’ fault in the abstract; I have no doubt they would, if they could. It’s the fault of those “principled conservatives” who are nominally in the party, who feel that maintaining the history of our august institutions is more important than saving the Republic. As of this moment, the United States is neither a democracy nor a republic; it is a plutocracy ruled by the political minority.

The Satanic Temple, after their case trying to overturn a medically unnecessary restrictive abortion law in Missouri failed when the Supreme Court turned them away, is trying a new approach in the wake of the Texas law. A prior case against Texas’s mandatory sonogram law is still ongoing.

Satanists Demand the FDA Give Them Access to Abortion Drugs for Religious Rituals (Friendly Atheist)

They argue to the FDA that they should be given the drugs on the grounds of religious freedom, noting they already have approved medical uses. They also note the FDA already gives a religious exemption for a drug with no approved uses, peyote (schedule I), for Native Americans. They note rejecting the application would set up the government for a religious discrimination case, and will take the FDA to court in sixty days if they don’t rule in favour of The Satanic Temple.

The Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy is a substantial burden on the Satanic Temple’s Satanic Abortion Ritual, which requires a physician’s evaluation before proceeding with the ritual.

If the FDA fails to respond or rejects the demand, the Satanic Temple then intends to bring a Religious Freedom Restoration Act lawsuit against the FDA or any other government agency which opposes them.

The government and Brexit supporters are still falling back on the excuses that shortages stem from the Covid epidemic and the EU being intransigent.

There’s a significant shortage of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers in the UK at the moment which is causing problems getting goods from warehouses, farms, packing plants etc. to stores. The press tell us that about 100,000 licenced drivers from eastern and central Europe have left the country since the Brexit vote and this is having knock-on effects in deliveries and distribution of pretty much everything. COVID-19 has reduced the numbers of new trainee HGV drivers and the licencing of those trainees that have passed the requisite tests, essential medical examinations of licence-holders are backlogged etc.

One news story today was that an HGV driver had arrived at his dispatch centre to discover he had been given an immediate pay rise of seven quid an hour, unasked because his employers were desperate to keep him (that’s about 10 bucks US). He appreciates the pay rise, wonders why it didn’t come earlier and he’s planning to leave the industry to start a consultancy anyway.

The UK government is thrashing around trying to band-aid this problem with the idea of using Army HGV drivers for essential deliveries such as medical supplies to hospitals as well as relaxing the restrictions on driving hours and break-times for civilian drivers which will, of course, rack up a body count in accidents.

The Christian illness count continues to climb in Illinois:

Illinois church camp that didn’t require vaccinations or masks linked to as many as 180 Covid cases, CDC says (NBC News, September 1, 2021)

An Illinois church summer camp and men’s conference in June has been linked to 180 confirmed and probable Covid-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

The camp and conference did not require attendees to be vaccinated, tested or masked, the CDC reported, and the high rate of transmission was likely to have been driven by the delta variant of the coronavirus.

The report, published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, found that as of Aug. 13, a five-day overnight summer camp and a two-day men’s conference, both sponsored by a church, had led to 180 confirmed and probable cases identified by contact tracers.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the camp outbreak occurred at the Crossing Camp in Rushville, in central Illinois, about 70 miles southwest of Peoria.

An NBC analysis indicates that the Texas law allows a rapist to sue anyone who assists his victim in obtaining an abortion.

There is one thing about the “no rape or incest” exception which is consistent with the Christian “all foetuses are sacred” mantra. If all foetuses are sacred, so are those which are products of rape and incest.

I’ve predicted for a long time since Ronald Reagan that Christianity would eventually move to justify rape and incest.

Let’s see how many church sects speak out against this (my guess would be close to zero).

Greets and saluts from the soggy NYC metro area. We escaped essentially unscathed from the flooding rains last night. Sump pump did its job, and I found a little water coming in via the dryer vent (went outside and taped seams and that seemed to stop water coming in. Some folks in our neighborhood weren’t so lucky as they had serious water in their basements. Others in our area lost power and the Passaic River is already flooding in spots.

At least 1 people died in NJ, two are missing, and several died in NYC.

Central Park smashed all time records last night with most rainfall in a 1 hour period - a record that was barely 2 weeks old. Highways, subways, and transit are all fubar thanks to flooding.

These amounts are likely to be exceeded by those in Central/Northern NJ, Rockland/Westchester NY, and up into Connecticut:

Newark: 8.41 inches
Central Park: 8.13 inches
LaGuardia: 6.8 inches
Bridgeport: 5.77 inches
JFK: 2.56 inches
Islip: 1.53 inches

Paterson Great Falls are definitely churning something fierce this morning as runoff flows into the river. There might be flooding in other spots along the Passaic, but bigger concerns are Bound Brook and they are expecting flooding rivaling Floyd.

Meanwhile, investigators will be out across NJ looking at storm damage to assess the tornadoes that struck around Mullica and Trenton.

More Christian plague vectors, this time in Michigan.

A Christian school has figured out a way around state mask mandates.

Christian school says parents can write “medical” mask exemptions for their kids (Michigan Public Radio)

It was Sunday, August 22, and the board at NorthPointe Christian Schools in Grand Rapids was holding an urgent evening meeting. Just two days earlier, the Kent County Health Department issued an mask order for pre-K through 6th grade students and staff, unless they had a “medical reason confirmed in writing from a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) currently licensed to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.”

Until then, NorthPointe, a private school boasting “100% Christian staff” and full-time tuition ranging from about $7,500 for kindergarten and just under $10,000 for high schoolers, told families masks would be optional “but welcome at all campuses.”

A little after 8 p.m. Sunday night, head of schools Todd Tolsma and board president Jeffrey Keessen sent an “important update” to families: after “much prayerful thought and consideration,” NorthPointe would allow parents to write a “medical” exemption for their own kids.

“As a school we believe that no one knows what their child needs physically, spiritually, socially and emotionally better than the parent,” the email read. “That is why you chose NorthPointe Christian Schools. NorthPointe Christian will enact the KCHD mask order, but also will accept a parent’s or guardian’s written representation stating that your child is not wearing a face covering because they cannot medically tolerate a face covering. This includes the consideration for a child’s mental health.”

Neither Tolsma nor Keessen responded to requests for comment Monday.

I don’t want to hear from Collins.

I want Sinema and Manchin locked in a room with leadership and Biden and hammer home what those two fucknuts have accomplished: they’ve aided and abetted the destruction of the rule of law by supporting a procedural method that is nowhere in the constitution, was enacted in the first place to suppress civil rights, and is now being used by a reactionary know nothing minority to sabotage government and thwart a majority of Americans from seeing progress done on a wide range of issues.

Make them support the filibuster elimination for the courts, and then announce not only that there are going to be new justices added to the bench, but that new circuits added and that the number of circuits will match the number of seats on the Supreme Court.

Democrats hold the majority. Act like it and make it happen. You know damned well that McConnell and the GOP would do anything and everything to further their power, including filling court seats in an election year and other chicanery. This helps balance a court that the GOP tilted in favor of the religious know nothing theocrats who lack the character and judgment to be sitting on a court anywhere.

The Robert Court should get favorable reviews compared to the Taney Court. What they did overnight with the Texas vigilante law is little different from how the Taney Court addressed slavery.

They’ve green lit vigilantism and shredded the rule of law. The 5 justices whose silence is assent know this law will never survive a critical analysis, so they’re not bothering to do it at all. They know it is unconstitutional, barely holds together under the internal logic of the law, as it provides a cloak of state action on private vigilantes, and ultimately advances their effort to overturn not only Roe and Casey, but Griswold and Obergefell.

Roe and Casey are the primary abortion laws.

Griswold provides a right to contraceptives.
Obergefell extended civil rights for the LGBTQ community.

This method of vigilantism and extremism is surely going to get extended by these right wing theofascists to those areas of law to deprive people of their rights without actually winning cases that overturn the precedent.

The Trump justices are intent on using the shadow docket to do what they can’t in open court.

When states give no-bid contracts to religious organisations to perform state functions, it is not surprising when the church either fails or rips off the state.

Gov. Ricketts gave a no-bid contract to a Kansas church group to provide foster care services in Omaha, making them the sole provider. It has predictably turned into a crapfest, as misuse of funds, outright fraud, and mistreatment of children has resulted.

Now we have this:

True, but they are about to unleash a shit storm. From the World-Herald editorial:

Young people need information to help them understand reproductive health. Some parents do a fine job informing their children. Other parents or guardians do not. Schools can play a constructive role in helping address this need.

A Nebraska high school student explained the need in a recent Midlands Voices essay. Her school taught her what side of the sidewalk a boy should walk on (my emphasis), she wrote, but “what I didn’t learn was about puberty and my reproductive health system. I didn’t learn how a person becomes pregnant, let alone about contraception. Consent and healthy relationships were never discussed. And they didn’t cover anything about sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The comedy apocalypse, Last Man on Earth, pointed out that the U.S. would be rendered uninhabitable as the unattended nuclear plants melted down. They built it with barriers to entry. In order to get your money, you have to succeed, otherwise, you get nothing. And even better, the defendants get nothing, regardless of whether they succeed in their defense or not. So basically, it’s entirely possible for the side with the money (hint: THE FOLKS THAT WROTE THE FUCKING THING) to win through sheer numbers; even if they keep losing the suits they file, the other guys don’t get paid, so they’ll run out of money faster.

Yes. It’s pretty clear that anyone can report anyone, with no facts or evidence.

So you can go ahead and report Ted Cruz, who sent his kids out of the country during a natural disaster as cover for their getting abortions. Or Ken Paxton’s wife. Or Abbott’s wife. Etc.

All this does is clog already overburdened courts with more frivolous actions.

Every aspect of this insane law is fraught with problems, and the Supreme Court’s right wing extremists punted because they wanted time to do analysis?

Every aspect of this law is unconstitutional on its face; they just want time to figure out a way to justify it (and by punting to a later date, are giving their fellow right wing extremists time to find justifications or loopholes they can use to justify this backdoor overturn of Roe without actually overturning Roe).

At the same time, this becomes model for overturning every other civil/voting right the right wing doesn’t like. Report gays for being gay. Etc. It’s not state action. It’s private actors.

That’s all bulkshit of course; the state is empowering private actors to act in the stead of the state to cover up the fact that they want to abolish conduct they deem illicit but lack the votes to do legislatively and the courts will not sustain on a direct attack.

The threat of these lawsuits is enough to chill reproductive health care options.

They’re going to target the minorities and people they think are “illegal immigrants”. Cleaning out the undesirables in their communities.

It’s all about enabling a shadow Gestapo to rule the state by terror while the state implicitly allows it, just stopping short of openly condoning it so as to appeal to their half of the Supremes and make it all above the board on paper. And the same template will likely be used to terrorize every other at risk group to ensure only the advancement of the White Male into their rightful place of eternal, unbreakable rule.

Running into barbed wire ropes was extreme. This is just suicidal. Hell, the fact that it’s drawn taut is like…genuinely disturbing. You might as well just dive into garrote wire at that point.

America is finally becoming a Christian nation! It’s everything we’ve ever wanted! Except for Jesus, who explicitly said He didn’t come to build an earthly kingdom, but who gives a flying fuck about what some old dead Jew said?!

American Exceptionalism is based on the notion that we are God’s Favorite Nation on Earth and will continue to prosper and enjoy His Divine Blessings because our laws reflect (their Fundamentalist backward interpretation of ) His Divine Will.

Needless to say, they see allowing abortion and birth control and public adultery and gay marriage and miscegenation and people eating the Bread of Idleness all as a direct affront to God and unless we outlaw all those things, he will no longer favor us and might just decide it is time to open up a Jehosophat-size can of Divine Ass-Whoop on us…

The main purpose being to force every single abortion clinic to close.

re: #322 No Malarkey!

Just remember a solid majority voted Trump out of office last November. We have the numbers on our side, and, if they come out to vote, we will win. The closing of all the abortion clinics in half the states should promote a massive backlash.

It was not a solid majority — only about 40,000 votes in the right states going a different way and Trump would have been re-elected. As I keep saying, thanks to the EC, a candidate can theoretically win 70% of the popular vote and lose the election.

I saw that there was in the law a ban on men who raped or engaged in incest with the woman filing an informant suit. But if the woman didn’t file a police report, as most don’t, I doubt it would apply.

And, unfortunately, the band is not very good. They completely butcher the songs.

They’re called ABBA Trois

There is a Belgian Prince cover band called the Violet Flems

How about if your child or your niece or your grandchild gets raped and gets pregnant from the rape?

It’s not just oops, my child had a one night stand and got pregnant. It’s the repeated victimization of women and girls.

They do not see that as a bigger issue than abortion.

Heh.

Listening to those two songs, they haven’t missed a beat. They sound great, I have to say. Maybe they can tour with Dave Grohl’s DeeGees, leading the disco revival.

The crazy thing about this system is you could force majeure through an abortion and Texas if you have enough cash for lawyers.

On one hand this is just an effect of the bad faith use of technicality that the law it built on, but on another I think it’s another a demonstration of what conservatism actually believes: rights are not universal, you get the rights you can afford.

My niece’s early childhood class (public school early childhood center, Massachusetts. Most kids 3-4; many special needs.) The kids look just fine with their masks.

[Embedded content]

My granddaughter is just over 2 and it is incredibly difficult to keep a mask on her for more than 10 or 15 minutes. Also, in daycare they eat and nap together maskless , so I’m not sure what the point is of trying to mask the rest of the time. Obviously the adults wear masks.

re: #514 jaunte

Elie’s post about what Biden and Democrats can do sounds great in the abstract, but here’s where I think it fails. Senate is 50/50 and 2 members - Sinema and Manchin are essentially siding with the GOP on the filibuster, which prevents actions to reorient the judiciary and expand the court and do all the things that would ultimately save civil and voting rights for decades to come.

Biden could engage in some action that federalizes abortion providers or otherwise grants them qualified/privileged immunity. It wont stop the Texas law from going after those who are seeking the abortions, or those who facilitate getting them to the provider.

And this same Supreme Court would quickly strike down Biden’s play - with all the certainty that it is “unconstitutional” even as they questioned how to approach the clearly unconstitutional Texas law. Therefore, we’d still have Roe overturned, the Court still pushing the theocratic agenda, and Biden was checked.

The way forward starts and stops with Manchin and Sinema, and they’re the ones who are the key to ending the GOP tyranny.

Also not a problem if you’re, say, an authority figure that constantly permitted to be forgiven because the culture says so.

Sitting here eating warm oatmeal cookies Wife just made. That’s fair, because I made her Martha Stewart waffles before dawn. That’s all because this is our 54th anniversary, and there is only going to be takeout for supper. That’s what the 54th present is—takeout.

Congratulations!
Here’s to a good year ahead for you two, and a chance to celebrate your 55th with a great meal inside a restaurant.
