Chris McQueen - “Send Off” is the last song we wrote in the batch of songs that became our self-titled GroundUP debut. Rather than starting slowly and building, we thought it could be cool to have a song that just kicks right in at full speed. Of course then there’s the question of where you go from there… after trying a lot of different approaches we found a sort of (for lack of a better word) “Americana” tune that felt like a natural extension of the flashy intro. Live shows are still a little weird right now, but we were really happy to be able to do this in-person + livestream gig at the East Austin Piano Shop. A big thank you to Collin Shook for the high quality video and audio production!

A couple of very deep cuts: “In town to record a new version of “Hungry Heart” for an upcoming EP release, Bruce joined his friend Wolfgang Niedecken and his Leopardefellband for six(!) run-throughs of Bruce’s 1981 single. Back when I was much younger, I took some classes in psychopharmacology.
One instructor’s primary issue was drug interactions. He noted that the human body is a dynamic system which really complicates predicting how multiple drugs would interact at any given time.

He’d have gone ballistic at the folks taking the “shotgun” approach to treating an illness with a host of different drugs, especially without careful medical supervision. And I share that opinion.

All the rest I had to have to even attend school. My dad had to have all kinds of shots when he was in the Air Force. Why it’s almost as though vaccines prevent diseases and there’s science to back that up.

I truly hope these assholes are underestimating how much hurt and anger women are feeling about this. Other state’s forced birth groups are all gleeful about this and the laws are going to come once this is allowed to stand.

In GA, 95 percent of eligible people are now registered to vote. Much of this is due to the work of a badass woman, Stacey Abrams, who trained more than a few bad ass women(and men) to get out the vote. Keep pissing women off and drive us to the polls GOP, fuck you. This will cause a backlash, I hope Texans can figure out a way to fight back. The precedent being set here is dangerous and stupid.

The problem is that women (white women in particular) are, and have been, a large part of how this sort of misogyny continues to win out, year in and year out. They are all too willing to help and support this kind of shit for pure ideology, as well as many knowing that they won’t be the sort of women that will suffer the most under laws like these. There’s no doubt going to be backlash, but it’s not going to be monolithic, and might not be enough to overturn just how much institutional support this sort of codified misogyny seems to have.

I mean, part of it seems to be just how many roadblocks can be put up for voters before it does just become too much to fight back against even with all effort? Well, he was the guy who went off to Iraq before that war was launched by Bush because (paraphrasing what he wrote) he could see Bush wanted a war and that would absolutely make his career. He noted a lot of journalists died in that war, but them’s the breaks when you’re trying to make a name for himself.

He is lamenting the death of his career, because he literally doesn’t know anything other than “war correspondent.” (It also doesn’t require a lot of work if you’re not afraid of being shot or blown up.)

I’m tempted again to defect from Texas, but I want to stay and fight it out until we turn it blue. This means a lot more than waiting for the immutable force of demographics. The Repugs are pulling out all the stops to retain power even as a shrinking minority. Their every action seems directed toward that goal, and they are getting away with it.

I lived in Texas in ‘79/’80 in Del Rio, where there was a girl behind every tree (insider joke) when I was going to flight school.

I moved back in ‘89 to Austin because of a woman who I hoped had changed and grown up.

Nope, nope, nope. Or maybe it was *me* who hadn’t changed (A bit of therapy revealed that neither one of us had changed and we were still doing the co-dependance tango. So I worked really hard to take the edges off of my innate Meyers-Briggs ENTP designation. I did pretty well.)

I got into politics as a side deal in my off-time as a working field geologist, and worked on two Ann Richards campaigns. She Who Must Be Obeyed went to the LBJ School of Public Affairs with Ellen, Ann’s daughter who lives up the street. Got to know Mollie Ivins through her, who lived the next neighborhood over and was a delightful drinking partner and an absolute Menschette.

Bought our house in “97 down here in Bouldin, in the ‘04 for $152,000 which is now worth north of $1.2 Million. I was President of our Neighborhood Resident’s Association back in the early aught’s when we we put together our Neighborhood Plan (adopted as code).

My neighborhood is one of the most proactive in this City, involved every land-development/wholesale rezoning fight, taco truck friendly, and Section 8 accepting in the City.

You want us to take Afghan refugees? Yes please! Our diversity has been one of our strengths.

So, why should *we* leave? This is our home. Our ‘hood. Our City.

We, as a little blue pimple in Texas, will persist. We will abide. We will fight for justice.

And we, eventually will kick these bigots to the curb. They are losing this fight one funeral at a time.

7/11 is my best friend’s husband’s birthday so that’s my celebration.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was a cool song to hear on the radio but when a coworker loaned me the CD, I didn’t like it much and I told him I thought it was kind of a dumb band. Maybe in the long term this will hurt them after the midterms if Dems manage to hold Congress and expand their Senate majority by a minimum of 2 seats. But if we lose either or both houses of Congress, then we’re gonna be waiting until at least 2025 before we can begin to work in earnest to undo the damage done tonight.

Realistically, I’d say what we’re going to see for at least the next two years is an increasingly balkanized situation where states feel free to pass or ban basic human rights within their own borders.

Repubs go into every election knowing that even some of their worst critics will, at the end of the day, concede that it is better to keep them in office than to allow a Dem to be elected. If they cannot succeed in knocking out a “RINO” in the primaries, then they will get 99% of what they want by voting for them than sitting out the election.

Dems instead work with the handicap that their worst critics will not only never be satisfied, but will actively work to run them out of office right up to Election Day. And then believe that their winning reelection means they “owe” something to those very same critics. Worse, if they win even a single Repub vote on Election Day, they will face endless op-eds in major papers about how they must “moderate” their own views to appease that one Repub.

Also, there’s a legal gray area where some psychiatrists have set up practices with ketamine infusions for intractable depression. Ketamine appears to work for some but (a) has to be redone every month or two, (b) are not cheap ($400-$800 per treatment) and (c) not covered by insurance. I casually looked into it because I take a pharmacy (ok, three different meds) to keep chronic major depression in check. The cost of the three meds (covered by insurance) plus the prescriber visit (not covered by insurance because I went off-plan) are significantly less than ketamine. However, if my depression was intractable and not treatable, yeah, I’d look into it more closely.

tl;dr Ketamine has legitimate uses and Sully can STFU.

I reflected today that my reproductive life is bookended with Roe v. Wade announced when I was 13 and my last Pap smear done today at age 61. (I still hurt, I’m never getting another Pap for as long as I live.)

What terrifies me is Griswold v. Connecticut (1964) being overturned and birth control becoming an absolute free-for-all disaster.

That said, maybe the way to attack anti-abortion laws is to take them on as imposition of religion under the First Amendment. I honestly don’t know how that would work, but it’s got to be worth a try.

Absolutely, and he’s certainly been in the business a long time (then again, so has Clapton so I don’t know what the hell is malfunction is). KISS does a lot of touring (much like Iron Maiden) so Gene is perhaps more acutely aware of the impact COVID-19 has had.

(Northwest of Philadelphia. The creek is a tributary of the Schuylkill River that enters it a little ways north of Valley Forge.)

I can only surmise that there is concern about the dam on the creek since there is a reservoir there.

We routinely do without electricity, telephone service, or Internet service here.
Although I don’t hunt, I do know how, and I can dress animals and birds (and regularly do so since hunters give us stuff here).
Reopening our well would be trivial. We also have the Beerline Canal less than a block from my house to draw water from (though it would definitely need filtering and heating to clean).
Raising chickens would be trivial for me.
We still have a public library; the books wouldn’t magically disappear. The Firefox series of books would be very helpful in learning skills we do not have.
We have the space to grow food. Apartment and condo dwellers in cities do not.

Some good news on Covid-19 breakthrough infections.

In the Lancet study, researchers in the United Kingdom analyzed data from a project called the ZOE Covid Study, where users report symptoms, vaccination status and other demographic information daily via an app.

The researchers looked at data collected on more than 1 million people from December 2020 through July 2021, a period that spanned both the alpha and delta variant waves in the U.K. Participants received two doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccine.

Overall, less than 0.2 percent of the participants reported a breakthrough infection, with such cases more likely in people already considered to be vulnerable, including older adults or people with underlying illnesses.

When breakthrough infections did occur, most were mild — just 6 percent of people with breakthrough infections reported symptoms. What’s more, vaccination was shown to cut the risk of hospitalization by more than two-thirds. ?!

I don’t wish to engage on this deeply (at least at this time.) But, barring a relatively short outage of power, transportation, etc. how quickly do things start getting dicey for a chunk of the rural population once these things are gone? e.g. how easily can farms and such move back to older methods if there isn’t fuel and parts available? Are there sufficient seeds, generators, etc. to provide for clean water, medical needs, etc.

Yes, cities will be messed up by such a catastrophe much sooner than lower population density rural areas. That is to be expected since the cities are pretty much totally dependent on the advanced technology, established infrastructure, and so forth.

But how readily will the rural populations get back to “basics” as compared to a decent number adjusting or competing for the resources that facilitate that process? And I also doubt that as many of these people are educated and “ready” to make those adjustments as think they are.

The Great Depression caused the loss of a lot of farms because they were heavily indebted to eastern banks, plus problems with the gold standard.

If you had a general collapse of society, banks aren’t going to be a problem, and someone with a whole section of land will no longer need to farm the whole thing to feed a single family.

I went for a 35 mile ride today and when I got home my odometer read 998 miles. damn, just short of a nice round number. I absolutely had to go out after dinner to get that last 2 miles. The fog was blowing in over the east bay hills and the temperature dropped to 60 degrees. A thermal top under my shirt didn’t quite prevent the cold from biting through my clothing, but I got 1001 miles in under 14 weeks (71.5 miles per week) and I still have 3 more days and a full battery. I should be able to bring that up to 75 miles a week.

Societal collapse means the collapse of stable currencies and mediums of exchange, replaced with bartering and exchanging labor for goods. Stockpiles of processed goods will quickly dwindle as supply chains break apart, how quickly they’re depleted depending upon whether or not somebody imposes rationing. That includes refined fuels like gasoline and diesel, as even those refineries that don’t shut down will likely lack means to move their end products to market.

You’re talking tight margins dependent upon raw manpower, a scenario that’s rife for immediate failure if one or more of those in the household suddenly injure themselves or develop an illness that requires more than just a day or two of bed rest.

Seems that Doolally was a harbo(u)r in India where discharged British soldiers would go to wait for the next transport ship back home.

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Wednesday that the state is bringing back a transfer center to help overstretched Nebraska hospitals find places to send patients.

The move is aimed at helping hospitals cope with a new wave of COVID-19 patients, driven by the spread of the delta variant.

Angie Ling, incident commander with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said the center will help relieve some of the stress on hospital staff by taking over the job of making call after call for an available bed.

“Our medical staff are hurting something fierce right now,” she said.

At a press briefing, Ling said Nebraska’s larger hospitals are seeing occupancy rates of 85% to 100% on a daily basis, between COVID patients and people with other types of health problems.

Nebraska vaccine refusnik dies.

He contracted Covid-19 in mid-May, was hospitalised in June, and died Monday.

He appeared on television in Omaha just before he died, urging people to get vaccinated.

Mike Leick, who was a controller for Marathon Ventures, was in good health before he became ill. He didn’t really like to go to the doctor and had never been hospitalized, said another of his daughters, Erin Leick of Omaha.

But during his second doctor’s visit this spring, his physician told him he needed to go to a hospital. He drove himself to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy, stopping to catch his breath on the walk from his car to the emergency room doors. He was admitted June 1.

On his third day in the hospital, Amber Leick said, her father mentioned that he regretted not getting vaccinated. He had been researching the vaccines, and his boss and a friend had been working to change his mind about them. He told his family he felt he would have gotten the shots eventually.

“He just wanted to make sure he had all the information and it didn’t go against his core beliefs as a person,” Amber Leick said.

All five of his children have been vaccinated.

Merck and Pfizer both announced the start of trials to test oral antiviral medications targeting Covid-19 on Wednesday, highlighting a growing interest in the market for therapeutics for the coronavirus.

Pfizer ‘s (ticker: PFE) trial is a Phase 2/3 study of an oral antiviral known as PF-07321332 in symptomatic adult Covid-19 patients who aren’t hospitalized and aren’t at risk of progressing to severe illness. The trial is in addition to one the company began in July, testing the same drug in nonhospitalized patients who are at risk of progressing to severe illness.

Merck (MRK), meanwhile, along with its partner the private company Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, announced the start of a Phase 3 trial of its oral antiviral molnupiravir as a post-exposure prophylaxis for patients who live in the same household as a person with symptomatic Covid-19.

The wave of Covid-19 therapeutic trials comes amid a growing consensus that the virus that causes Covid-19 isn’t going away, and that the disease will continue to pose some level of threat for the foreseeable future. That could create a substantial market for Covid-19 therapeutics, which have so far received little attention in comparison to the vaccines.

The Archdiocese of Omaha also came out in favour of vaccines, but with a weaker statement than they could have.

Catholics have raised a number of questions regarding the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines for COVID-19.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and U.S. bishops have made it clear that it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process if there are no other available vaccines comparable in safety and efficacy with no connection to abortion.

If it is possible to choose among a number of equally safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine with the least connection to abortion-derived cell lines should be chosen. If a vaccine with no connection to abortion-derived cell lines is not readily available, vaccines that used such cell lines only for testing would be preferable to those that use such cell lines for ongoing production. Such choices may not be possible, however, especially in the early stages of vaccine distribution.

With anti-abortion groups across the country setting up tip lines already to make money off this, it won’t be long before some wingnut brings a case in civil court.

The next step would be to challenge the law after a suit is filed. I don’t foresee the court striking down the six-week portion, instead narrowly ruling that individual actions by a third party cannot be brought. They could also rule in that singular case an action cannot be brought, requiring repeated cases.

There’s a significant shortage of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers in the UK at the moment which is causing problems getting goods from warehouses, farms, packing plants etc. to stores. The press tell us that about 100,000 licenced drivers from eastern and central Europe have left the country since the Brexit vote and this is having knock-on effects in deliveries and distribution of pretty much everything. COVID-19 has reduced the numbers of new trainee HGV drivers and the licencing of those trainees that have passed the requisite tests, essential medical examinations of licence-holders are backlogged etc.

One news story today was that an HGV driver had arrived at his dispatch centre to discover he had been given an immediate pay rise of seven quid an hour, unasked because his employers were desperate to keep him (that’s about 10 bucks US). He appreciates the pay rise, wonders why it didn’t come earlier and he’s planning to leave the industry to start a consultancy anyway.

The UK government is thrashing around trying to band-aid this problem with the idea of using Army HGV drivers for essential deliveries such as medical supplies to hospitals as well as relaxing the restrictions on driving hours and break-times for civilian drivers which will, of course, rack up a body count in accidents.

Illinois church camp that didn’t require vaccinations or masks linked to as many as 180 Covid cases, CDC says (NBC News, September 1, 2021)

An Illinois church summer camp and men’s conference in June has been linked to 180 confirmed and probable Covid-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

The camp and conference did not require attendees to be vaccinated, tested or masked, the CDC reported, and the high rate of transmission was likely to have been driven by the delta variant of the coronavirus.

The report, published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, found that as of Aug. 13, a five-day overnight summer camp and a two-day men’s conference, both sponsored by a church, had led to 180 confirmed and probable cases identified by contact tracers.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the camp outbreak occurred at the Crossing Camp in Rushville, in central Illinois, about 70 miles southwest of Peoria.

An NBC analysis indicates that the Texas law allows a rapist to sue anyone who assists his victim in obtaining an abortion.

There is one thing about the “no rape or incest” exception which is consistent with the Christian “all foetuses are sacred” mantra. If all foetuses are sacred, so are those which are products of rape and incest.

I’ve predicted for a long time since Ronald Reagan that Christianity would eventually move to justify rape and incest.

Let’s see how many church sects speak out against this (my guess would be close to zero).

Greets and saluts from the soggy NYC metro area. We escaped essentially unscathed from the flooding rains last night. Sump pump did its job, and I found a little water coming in via the dryer vent (went outside and taped seams and that seemed to stop water coming in. Some folks in our neighborhood weren’t so lucky as they had serious water in their basements. Others in our area lost power and the Passaic River is already flooding in spots.

At least 1 people died in NJ, two are missing, and several died in NYC.

Central Park smashed all time records last night with most rainfall in a 1 hour period - a record that was barely 2 weeks old. Highways, subways, and transit are all fubar thanks to flooding.

These amounts are likely to be exceeded by those in Central/Northern NJ, Rockland/Westchester NY, and up into Connecticut:

Newark: 8.41 inches
Central Park: 8.13 inches
LaGuardia: 6.8 inches
Bridgeport: 5.77 inches
JFK: 2.56 inches
Islip: 1.53 inches

Paterson Great Falls are definitely churning something fierce this morning as runoff flows into the river. There might be flooding in other spots along the Passaic, but bigger concerns are Bound Brook and they are expecting flooding rivaling Floyd.

Meanwhile, investigators will be out across NJ looking at storm damage to assess the tornadoes that struck around Mullica and Trenton.

A Christian school has figured out a way around state mask mandates.

Christian school says parents can write “medical” mask exemptions for their kids (Michigan Public Radio)

It was Sunday, August 22, and the board at NorthPointe Christian Schools in Grand Rapids was holding an urgent evening meeting. Just two days earlier, the Kent County Health Department issued an mask order for pre-K through 6th grade students and staff, unless they had a “medical reason confirmed in writing from a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) currently licensed to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.”

Until then, NorthPointe, a private school boasting “100% Christian staff” and full-time tuition ranging from about $7,500 for kindergarten and just under $10,000 for high schoolers, told families masks would be optional “but welcome at all campuses.”

A little after 8 p.m. Sunday night, head of schools Todd Tolsma and board president Jeffrey Keessen sent an “important update” to families: after “much prayerful thought and consideration,” NorthPointe would allow parents to write a “medical” exemption for their own kids.

“As a school we believe that no one knows what their child needs physically, spiritually, socially and emotionally better than the parent,” the email read. “That is why you chose NorthPointe Christian Schools. NorthPointe Christian will enact the KCHD mask order, but also will accept a parent’s or guardian’s written representation stating that your child is not wearing a face covering because they cannot medically tolerate a face covering. This includes the consideration for a child’s mental health.”

Neither Tolsma nor Keessen responded to requests for comment Monday.

Make them support the filibuster elimination for the courts, and then announce not only that there are going to be new justices added to the bench, but that new circuits added and that the number of circuits will match the number of seats on the Supreme Court.

Democrats hold the majority. Act like it and make it happen. You know damned well that McConnell and the GOP would do anything and everything to further their power, including filling court seats in an election year and other chicanery. This helps balance a court that the GOP tilted in favor of the religious know nothing theocrats who lack the character and judgment to be sitting on a court anywhere.

The Robert Court should get favorable reviews compared to the Taney Court. What they did overnight with the Texas vigilante law is little different from how the Taney Court addressed slavery.

They’ve green lit vigilantism and shredded the rule of law. The 5 justices whose silence is assent know this law will never survive a critical analysis, so they’re not bothering to do it at all. They know it is unconstitutional, barely holds together under the internal logic of the law, as it provides a cloak of state action on private vigilantes, and ultimately advances their effort to overturn not only Roe and Casey, but Griswold and Obergefell.

Roe and Casey are the primary abortion laws.

Griswold provides a right to contraceptives.
Obergefell extended civil rights for the LGBTQ community.

This method of vigilantism and extremism is surely going to get extended by these right wing theofascists to those areas of law to deprive people of their rights without actually winning cases that overturn the precedent.

The Trump justices are intent on using the shadow docket to do what they can’t in open court.

I plan to go to my local school board meeting on September 7 and ask them to institute a vaccine mandate for all employees working in the schools. I doubt they will, but it’s not a completely hopeless cause, because they did adopt a mask mandate before it became statewide policy, and someone has to stand up for what’s right.

So basically, it’s entirely possible for the side with the money (hint: THE FOLKS THAT WROTE THE FUCKING THING) to win through sheer numbers; even if they keep losing the suits they file, the other guys don’t get paid, so they’ll run out of money faster.

Yes. It’s pretty clear that anyone can report anyone, with no facts or evidence.

In today’s installment of Pulpit Pimp Theater ‘Apostle’ Michael Petro Says God Is Raising Up a ‘Violent Church’ Because Democrats Don’t Tolerate Xtianity

Radical right-wing pastor Greg Locke appeared on the “Voice of Healing” radio program last week, where he insisted that he must use his Sunday services to preach about politics because the Democrats are trying to impose “tyranny” and take away the rights of Xtians.. The host of the program, a self-proclaimed “apostle” named Michael Petro, readily agreed, declaring that what the United States needs now is “a violent church.”

This is the poison Radical Xtians are programming their marks to do.

The problem as I see it is that there are more predominantly red states than blue ones. Each state gets two senators. This means, by default, the GOP has an easier chance of getting a senator majority than Democrats do.

I am begging people to understand that a 50/50 senate is not a blank-check majority. If you want Dems to pass and fix more shit, the solution is so elect more Dems so that we don’t have to rely on Sinema and Manchin.

There was as time when “rural state” did not automatically equate to “GOP state”…but it is the nature of the Senate that the GOP is over-represented in the less populous states and the Dems. based on the overall number of votes cast for Democratic candidates nationwide, should have a much clearer majority.

The crazy thing about this system is you could force majeure through an abortion and Texas if you have enough cash for lawyers.

On one hand this is just an effect of the bad faith use of technicality that the law it built on, but on another I think it’s another a demonstration of what conservatism actually believes: rights are not universal, you get the rights you can afford.

My niece’s early childhood class (public school early childhood center, Massachusetts. Most kids 3-4; many special needs.) The kids look just fine with their masks.

My granddaughter is just over 2 and it is incredibly difficult to keep a mask on her for more than 10 or 15 minutes. Also, in daycare they eat and nap together maskless , so I’m not sure what the point is of trying to mask the rest of the time. Obviously the adults wear masks.

Elie’s post about what Biden and Democrats can do sounds great in the abstract, but here’s where I think it fails. Senate is 50/50 and 2 members - Sinema and Manchin are essentially siding with the GOP on the filibuster, which prevents actions to reorient the judiciary and expand the court and do all the things that would ultimately save civil and voting rights for decades to come.

Biden could engage in some action that federalizes abortion providers or otherwise grants them qualified/privileged immunity. It wont stop the Texas law from going after those who are seeking the abortions, or those who facilitate getting them to the provider.

And this same Supreme Court would quickly strike down Biden’s play - with all the certainty that it is “unconstitutional” even as they questioned how to approach the clearly unconstitutional Texas law. Therefore, we’d still have Roe overturned, the Court still pushing the theocratic agenda, and Biden was checked.

The way forward starts and stops with Manchin and Sinema, and they’re the ones who are the key to ending the GOP tyranny.
