Starting in 2012 I was expecting to finish it the following year… Life isn’t always what we expect and that’s for the best ! These 7 years were such an amazing adventure having time with Yohan and his family. And that’s surely the most beautiful part of the guitar !

When I was in high school I had a friend who was a classical guitarist. He grew out the fingernails on his picking hand, because that’s what classical guitarists do. It’s part of the playing style. Well, because this was shit-ass Amarillo, Texas in the 1980s, that obviously signified one or more of the following things:

1) “fag”
2) Satan
3) “drugs”

The usual bullshit happened. Jocks beat him up and got away with it. The school made him cut his long fingernails. His parents were spineless conformists, so they were no help. Eventually I moved away and lost contact with him.

I was able to skate by in Calculus 1 at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, but Calculus 2 was my downfall - the CIS degree at UM-D required math above and beyond standard degree requirements. Later on, the introduced a Information Technology degree - the prof who set that program up wrote book called “COBOL: A structured approach” and two of my programs that I wrote for one of his classes were included in the book, so I had to sing a waiver. It was written by my prof at the time, Prof. Ricahrds, with a co-author of Prof. Chaney, and was reviewed by Marvin Stick in 1981.
Sadly I lost the book when I moved up here.

You can have as many recordings as you care to record of the piece you will be posting, prior to posting it, but once you post it, it’s history, and it’s in the memory hole of the internet. Again, the guitar sounded great, but the performance was meh.

Portland City Council to vote on ending trade and travel with Texas in response to abortion restrictions

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced on Friday that Portland City Council will vote on an emergency resolution on Wednesday with the intent to ban city business and employee travel related to the state of Texas.

The resolution was made in response to the state’s recent abortion laws that greatly restrict access to the procedure. In a statement from the city of Portland, the law was called unconstitutional.

If passed, the ban will continue until the state of Texas withdraws the abortion law or until it is overturned in court. City legal counsel is currently evaluating the legal aspects of this proposed resolution.

The Portland City Council said in a statement, “It stands unified in its belief that all people should have the right to choose if and when they carry a pregnancy and that the decisions they make are complex, difficult, and unique to their circumstances.”

Don’t make it just about the abortion law. There’s the voter suppression, too. And the no license/no training guns for everyone.

ETA: also, the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, how safe do you feel going to a place with no ICU beds available should anybody need them? Plus the power will probably give out, that’ll fuck most of the movies and musical performances and tech demos.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano has been pretty quiet for a day and a half now. Even if it were erupting we couldn’t see it as that part of Iceland has been foggy and cloudy for several days.

However, just at daybreak the clouds thinned just enough to get an image that looks like an outline of the crater:

You can see how jagged the rim has become. On the 1st it started to crumble in spots, and during the two days in the fog it looks like a lot more of the rim has fallen. I suspect his is because as it cools (the surface may look dark but under the dark skin the basalt still glows dark red) the basalt shrinks and cracks form, and thus if the basalt is not balanced it just falls away.

Here is how the rim looked on the 31st, from the same spot (and almost the same zoom on the camera):

I didn’t have it as bad as that, but I got picked on a lot for not being into what “normal” Midwestern males were supposed to be into; namely sports, muscle cars and bleach-blonde cheerleaders with big tits.

I was into art and music and (at least theoretically) into women, but ones who had read a book or two and had something interesting to talk about.

Guess it was not too surprising to find out that many of the people I hung with in HS and college later came out gay. I guess we fell in together because we were all rather marginalized and because they were creative and intelligent company.

What I’ve been getting through various sources is that the Brits are pissed we actually left instead of lying about it and they weren’t ready because they thought we we going to punt it again like always. They refused to believe we were leaving because every previous attempt was bullshit, including Clownstick’s plan.

The Brits claim they cant trust us (to be untrustworthy) anymore.

I was able to skate by in Calculus 1 at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, but Calculus 2 was my downfall - the CIS degree at UM-D required math above and beyond standard degree requirements. Later on, the introduced a Information Technology degree - the prof who set that program up wrote book called “COBOL: A structured approach” and two of my programs that I wrote for one of his classes were included in the book, so I had to sing a waiver. It was written by my prof at the time, Prof. Ricahrds, with a co-author of Prof. Chaney, and was reviewed by Marvin Stick in 1981.
Sadly I lost the book when I moved up here.

AUSTIN, TX—In an ongoing effort to completely eliminate the right to an abortion in the state, the Texas Legislature passed a new law Thursday that allows private citizens to kidnap and detain any pregnant woman or girl until she reaches full term and gives birth. “The sanctity of life can only be preserved when every Texan is empowered to seize childbearing females off the street, place them in the back of a van, and drive them to an undisclosed location where they can be held against their will for the duration of their pregnancy,” Gov. Greg Abbott said as he signed the bill into law, explaining that it was within the rights of an individual to keep the pregnant hostage chained up in a basement or locked in a cage, so long as she was properly secured and escape was impossible.

On that topic, I mentioned to Mrs. Fish about Texas’s other stupid laws that went into effect this week, including the “fully free open carry” law. She was dumbstruck; she couldn’t understand how you have to have a valid license to operate a car, and an even more restrictive license to operate a motorcycle, but you can just walk up and buy and carry a gun in Texas and nobody cares. She kept coming back to the fact that guns are specifically designed to kill things, and how can anyone not care that the person holding the gun is qualified to operate it, or mentally stable enough to control it and use it responsibly? I had to tell her that those were all great arguments, and I obviously agree with her, but the pro-gun idiots only see “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” and instantly go into frothing wingnut rage mode if anyone dares to suggest that we be responsible with gun ownership.

A former Marine was pulled over for following a truck too closely. Police took nearly $87,000 of his cash. (Washington Post, September 1, 2021)

The Nevada trooper first told Stephen Lara the highway patrol was educating drivers “about violations they may not realize they’re committing,” and that he’d been pulled over for following a tanker truck too closely. Eventually the trooper admitted having an ulterior purpose: stopping the smuggling of illegal drugs, weapons and currency as they crossed the state.

Lara — a former Marine who says he was on his way to visit his daughters in Northern California — insisted he was doing none of those things, though he readily admitted he had “a lot” of cash in his car. As he stood on the side of the road, police searched the vehicle, pulling nearly $87,000 in a zip-top bag from Lara’s trunk and insisting a drug-sniffing dog had detected something on the cash.

Police found no drugs, and Lara, 39, was charged with no crime. But police left with his money, calling a Drug Enforcement Administration agent to coordinate an “adoption,” which allows federal authorities to seize cash or property they suspect is connected to criminal activity without levying criminal charges.

The last four centuries of Christian rule in Europe don’t seem so bad to you? The enslavement of Africa, the genocide of Native Americans, rampant antisemitism resulting in endless pogroms and finally the Holocaust, &c?

Only in the last few decades has Christianity been on a steep decline in western Europe, mostly post-WW2. In the late XX Century and this one, religious/nationalist wars continued in the Balkans, Poland is reverting back to authoritarian religious rule backed by the Catholic Church, while Ireland threw off the shackles of Catholic rule and started pushing aside their barbaric laws on abortion and women’s rights.

Zaruba said that, in all, 23 hospitals were called. All full.

Finally, at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 18 — about five hours after the 57-year-old farmer and metalworker had arrived at the Auburn hospital — he was life-flighted to Des Moines, where Mercy One Medical Center had agreed to admit him. He died there.

Zaruba said Thursday that he still struggles to talk about what happened — a problem the state moved to address earlier this week.

“I’ve practiced medicine for 25 years. I never dreamed I’d be in a situation where I couldn’t transfer a patient to a hospital that was close,” he said. “Worse, Mark was one of my very best friends.”

But, yeah, it got stupid during the war on drugs and is clearly unconstitutional, regardless of what the goal was.

Some professional gamblers I know, who often travel with lots of cash, will literally drive out of their way to avoid crossing certain states. That this happened in NV is shocking, as it’s not uncommon to have people with 100k+ cash on them in Vegas. Probably why the cops used adoption and got the feds involved. The guy will get his money back, but it’s a total free roll for the cops.

But I also recall a moment in Catholic catechism when the Monsignor came to visit and the nun teaching the class knelt to kiss his ring.

Even as an eight-year-old kid, that bothered me and I thought, “This is not what we do in America!”. That was the time of Civil Rights and Equal Rights and those also shaped my sense of right and wrong.

But when you start talking about religious institutions, then you are starting to talk about political entities. That is a whole other matter, they should be kept as far away from politics as possible.

Please do not conflate spirituality or religious sense with any organized religion. There is overlap but they are far far from identical.

“Religious sense” is personal and subjective.

I might ponder the “where” or the “how” of our existence, but am not ashamed to say “I don’t know” if I don’t have an answer to a question. I don’t have to posit something that would violate every law of physics and chemistry discovered to posit a “how.”

I’m not conflating “spirituality” with “religion” as I don’t know what “spirituality” means. Organised religions frequently invoke the term though to define how they feel. I can’t say if they overlap or not because I do not know what “spiritual” is, and no two people can give a concrete definition for it.

As best as I can tell from the outside looking in, in the Middle Ages the term meant orienting toward the image of God (which I also don’t understand), but has expanded in modern times to be entirely a subjective experience.

There was a documentary, In Search of General Tso, that goes into the history of Chinese immigration and yes, ever wonder why every town seems to have a Chinese laundry/store/restaurant?

Ellis Island was opened in 1891. Prior to 1875, immigration was an issue for states with ports. We pretty much had open borders, and in a number of states, immigrants could vote after declaring their intent to become citizens. In the politics battles between the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans, the Dem-Reps courted the immigrant vote. One ways western territories tried to increase their populations they gave immigrants (and in some cases women) the right to vote.

It’s something like “love.” Love has a lot of meanings and definitions for people, and as far as I can tell they are all subjective. No one can demonstrate “love,” though you can demonstrate actions which are considered evidence of love.

For example I say “I love my wife.” I can demonstrate my wife exists, that she is in fact my wife from legal documents, a public announcement in the Saguache, Colo. Crescent newspaper, we behave in ways society expects a married couple to do (live together, public PDA, saccharine nicknames, &c). But for all the evidence I can show my wife exists, I can’t show any evidence I love my wife. Only she and I know for sure. Some might show negative evidence (we don’t have wedding rings, we didn’t have a public wedding or any witnesses beyond a chipmunk, no photographs of us being wed, &c).

A major problem the 16th-19th century horse cavalry had was slashing (curved sabres) or poking (straight sabres) people without losing their swords or injuring their sword arm. It took a lot of training.

And it was orders of magnitude more difficult if the enemy fought back. Plus horses had a deep reluctance to do dangerous stuff like run into walls of spears/pikes/bayonets.

The US went very quickly to using cavalry as firearm-ed skirmishers, raiders, and scouts. It took Europeans a lot longer to get there.

Ellis Island didn’t open until 1892. It was only of interest to the authorities because NY was already a big city, and lots of ships landed there. Same with Boston. On the West Coast, or the northern or southern borders, you didn’t even have to register your name. You just walked in.

Ellis Island didn’t open until 1892. It was only of interest to the authorities because NY was already a big city, and lots of ships landed there. Same with Boston. On the West Coast, or the northern or southern borders, you didn’t even have to register your name. You just walked in.

We came in from a Canadian landing, Halifax IRRC. We went pretty straight to NY. (And we did lose an O’ along the way.)

My family mostly arrived through Philadelphia, with the exception of the German side of my mother’s family. They were Hessians who opted to stay after the Revolutionary War. Our family’s name gave people then the same problems people now have, so as my distant relatives fanned out across the country, they spread like 6 different spellings of the name.

My mother and her brother spelled the name differently. Birth registrars and the US Army screwed it up so routinely that he just went with the common error.

A major problem the 16th-19th century horse cavalry had was slashing (curved sabres) or poking (straight sabres) people without losing their swords or injuring their sword arm. It took a lot of training.

And it was orders of magnitude more difficult if the enemy fought back. Plus horses had a deep reluctance to do dangerous stuff like run into walls of spears/pikes/bayonets.

The US went very quickly to using cavalry as firearm-ed skirmishers, raiders, and scouts. It took Europeans a lot longer to get there.

US did light dragoons from the get-go (American Revolution). And never quite carried the cavalry numbers to really start making up any of the various more complex cavalry formations (lancers, hussars, heavy, etc.) that the European armies had. And the US generally didn’t have the terrain and supporting logistics to field large numbers of cavalry either in addition to the military budget to do so.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Which was… just as the name implies.

Just a reminder of how one Leslie Charteris was treated by the Chinese Exclusion Act…and California’s anti-Chinese laws. Just in case you didn’t know, Leslie Charteris was the creator of this literary figure…

Charteris himself wasn’t far removed from his character. Born in Singapore to an English mother and Chinese father, he had an exceptional education culminating in studies at Kings College, Cambridge. He relocated to the United States in 1932, where he continued to publish short stories and got a job writing for Paramount Pictures. He naturally found his way to Palm Springs. (Charteris was excluded from permanent residency in the United States because of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was particularly pernicious in California, and prohibited immigration for persons of “fifty percent or greater Oriental blood.” As a result, Charteris was forced to continually renew his six-month temporary visitor’s visa. Eventually, an act of Congress personally granted him the right of permanent residence in the United States, with eligibility for naturalization, which he later completed.)
