I like this. A variation on Prokofiev’s “Dance of the Knights” was not what I was expecting from Steve Hackett.

re: #8 Dave In Austin

One billion years ago when I was a wee babe in the woods, I worked at a very popular and busy mom-n-pop computer shop (back when those existed). One of my fellow technicians was a retired Arlington TX police officer (who happened to be a dead ringer for Jerry Reed, though that’s neither here nor there). He was a nice enough guy. One of his impressive skills was dealing with, and de-escalating, encounters with the occasional belligerent and/or insane asshole customer. I usually bailed on those occasions because that is a skill I have never developed, and I certainly didn’t have it when I was 20-something.

I once asked him how he could stand to deal with the entitled, arrogant asshole contingent of the general public as a police officer without pepper spraying or tasering every asshole who frankly deserved it. His response was that he always had the upper hand for two reasons. One, he said it is nearly impossible for an average person to go about their day without violating some kind of law or city ordinance, and two, if things went too far sideways he could always claim that he smelled marijuana.

I thought that was kind of shitty and diabolical, but it was an instructive peek into the mind of someone who was probably one of those fabled “good cops”.

If you have the chance to see Steve Hackett live, I urge you not to pass it up. He is the only member of the “classic” Genesis lineup performing their Peter Gabriel era oeuvre, but even if you are not interested in that he mixes in his frequently brilliant solo work…consistently great live performer.

Also:

My mom finished her first and most serious round of treatment for brain cancer in late July. Her first post-treatment MRI was clear and she is feeling better if not great. The best part for me is that I have been having my most “normal” conversations with her for many months. She’ll start the first of what is meant to be 6 monthly additional chemo rounds in 2 weeks, but she is far stronger than she was for the first round (when she was also having radiation) and making plans to go south for the winter.

I believe it’s not only that, but you can be sued in any county in Texas, so not only can the plaintiffs shop for judges, but they can do it in a way that makes it prohibitively hard for you to show up to the hearing, ensuring a lost suit and a hefty and chilling windfall for the harassers.

My brother used to date a “child psychiatrist” in FL who ran a scam doing this. She tried it on my daughter while she lived with us for a brief time when she was in middle school. My kid had mental health issues, she still does in her 30s. But committing her to a shit facility in FL would have done nothing but make her angry and withdrawn even more. Needless to say my brother and I no longer talk because he went along with it.

Florida. Again.

Unnecessary, Inappropriate, Illegal: SPLC lawsuit exposes how nearly 38,000 children each year are seized in Florida, handcuffed and taken to mental facilities
splcenter.org

I wonder what percentage of these children are boys? The reason I ask is because studies have shown that girls are less likely to be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder to start out with because we are socialized differently than boys—basically girls are told to “be sweet.” And having “be sweet” socialized into you from an early age is going to tamp down a lot of autistic behavior, resulting in fewer diagnoses.

And getting hauled off by the cops is not the only thing autistic kids have to face. There is a thing called “applied behavior analysis” and “aversion therapy.” At the worst, kids can be legally subjected to electroshock therapy at the “Judge Rotenberg Center” in Massachusetts. Which leads to this kind of legal obscenity:

In the early 2000s, Cheryl McCollins enrolled her son Andre, who has autism and other developmental disabilities, in the Judge Rotenberg Center in Canton, Massachusetts.

She never thought that in 2002, her child would be restrained by multiple staffers, tied to a gurney and shocked 31 times. His punishment for misbehaving — staffers’ justification for administering the shocks — left him catatonic.

The video of the incident, which went viral in 2012, documents a panicked Andre screaming in pain and pleading with the workers to stop shocking him.

The footage remains traumatic for McCollins to hear, but she wants people to listen in order to spread her message against electric shock therapy and the Judge Rotenberg Center.

*snip*

The Food and Drug Administration issued a ban on the procedure in 2020 — but a federal appeals court judge overturned it in July saying it exceeded the FDA’s authority.

The ruling is the latest chapter in a decades-long battle between disability activists, parents and former students who call the treatments traumatizing and abusive, and a group of parents and administrators who say the shocks are a life-saving last resort to “correct aggressive or self-harming behavior in adults and children.”

MassLive reporter Heather Morrison has covered the story for years. She says students wear backpacks equipped with electrical stimulation devices around the clock. Workers at the residential school employ the shocks using a remote control device when the students display a range of unwanted behaviors.

wbur.org

I want you to notice “unwanted behaviors.” Those are behaviors deemed by the Judge Rotenberg staff to be unwanted, not by the kids or by their parents.

Sorry to go on a little rant, but because of this kind of crazy, I’m glad I wasn’t diagnosed with autism as a kid. I have no idea what kind of torture I’d have been subjected to in the name of making me “normal.”

I had to deal with the schools here insisting on ABA therapy for my son when he was about to start middle school. I looked into it and knew pretty quickly it would not be useful and most likely harmful. We also just had a place open in this area as a “therapy resource for people on the autism spectrum” that uses ABA exclusively and are hiring people to train for this crap. The kindest thing I can say about this is that it’s abusive and punishment based.

My son was helped with occupational therapy and various programs to help develop social skills and basic skill sets. What really needs to happen is public schools actively stopping the bullying that happens in schools, especially after elementary school. At that age services become really scarce and parents looking for help for their kids end up in ABA and other programs that are just flat out hateful and unhelpful because there’s nowhere else to turn. Not to mention how expensive this stuff is. Middle school is where most of the bullying begins, and the schools do not deal with it unless you can afford an attorney to jump on their asses over it. And even then little happens to the bullies, it’s always the autistic person’s fault.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday called for a special session of the General Assembly to address the state’s alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

The session will begin Tuesday at the state Capitol in Frankfort.

Beshear’s call comes two weeks after the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled a lower court was wrong to block new laws limiting the scope of the governor’s emergency powers, giving the Republicans’ legislative supermajority a substantial say over any new policy measures to address the pandemic.

The governor’s call for a special session follows more than a week of negotiations with Republican leaders over the scope of a potential session and what pandemic-related legislation both could support.

Under the Kentucky constitution, the governor has the exclusive power to both call a special session and set the agenda of any legislation it considers.

Two of my friends in Texas have kids in school, a son and a grandson. The son (vaccinated) is in quarantine after a girl in his class tested positive. So far he is negative. The grandson (too young to vaccinate) of the other tested positive after, what, 10 days in school? Grandma makes us here seem like calm center lefties, so to say she is raging is too mild. Those are the only two people I know in Texas with school age kids. Both affected.

re: #59 mmmirele

Which leads to this kind of legal obscenity:

Shit like this is why we chose to delay seeking an official diagnosis of our son (who turns 31 today) while we lived in rural Appalachia. He exhibited many behaviors indicative of being on the spectrum - hyperfocus on singular topics, extreme introversion, inability to retain classmates’ names or recognize them as other than impediments to his learning processes, periodic ritualistic motions (running down a hallway at home exactly seven steps, stopping at the end with exactly one jump, then turning around and repeating the process four times), suddenly jerking and flapping his arms out of nowhere when he thinks of something that amuses him.

Fortunately, his standardized testing scores and very high reading level at his struggling schools bought him a bit of tolerance from faculty and administration. Also fortunately, his mother was (and remains) an academic and for many years, her university was right next door to his elementary school and was quick to establish relationships with the counselors, faculty, and staff and helicopter in to advocate, when necessary.

As an adult, *he* chose not to seek out getting an official diagnosis. It did take him about eight years of failed interviews after getting his degree to get hired someplace. (He has a speech tic where, if he gets stuck in a sentence, he repeatedly bounces back to the beginning of the sentence until he finally bounces over the blockage like a sixties sitcom robot. That, along with a flat affect and other physical quirks, probably doesn’t play out well in interviews, even in comp/sci, which is full of people similarly lacking in social skills, but lacking in such obvious tics.)

I ordered new cabinet doors for my pantry, as one of the upper doors had fallen completely apart, and the other has a noticeable list. As I was disassembling the old doors, I had the belated realization that the hinges are mounted internally to the doors, and I started to regret not adding the hinge prep to the order. As it turns out, my hinges are of an older style that the door company would not have prepped them for, which would have rendered the doors useless (or I would have had to prep the cabinet itself for different hinges). So, as it turns out in the end, I made the right decision, but now I had to go shopping for tools to cut my own hinge slots. That’ll be a project for this week.

This article just makes me want to puke. (The article is well-written; the subject matter is nauseating.)

With most abortions illegal in Texas, crisis pregnancy centers see an opportunity

Texas has over 200 crisis pregnancy centers, more than any other state in the country. Many offer a limited range of medical services, including pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, but typically not birth control, and are staffed by a mix of paid employees and volunteers. The vast majority are faith-based and explicitly antiabortion in their mission…

They will sit them down in a softly lit room, and talk…

When patients who want an abortion come to Care Net, their consultations usually take about an hour, said Julie Miner, a care navigator at the facility who counsels patients but is not a licensed counselor...

Unless the law changes, McGregor said, a staff member will inform the patient that abortion is no longer legal. Miner says she would discuss adoption, an option she now expects will become much more popular. She would never mention that a woman could access abortion out of state, she said…

The most vomit-inducing quote:

Pinson expects to see a lot of patients who are angry about the law, a challenge she feels ready to meet. “We’re going to get the honor of walking alongside them until they feel comfortable, until the joy starts rising,” she said.

And, of course, For over 15 years, the Texas state legislature has been funneling money into crisis pregnancy centers. In the legislative session this spring, legislators gave them $100 million

weirdness in South Carolina

Hampton lawyer Alex Murdaugh, whose wife and younger son were shot to death in June, has been shot on a rural road in Hampton County.

Murdaugh, 53, was shot Saturday on Salkehatchie Road, according to his lawyer Jim Griffin.

Griffin, who said he had spoken with another Murdaugh family member, said Alex Murdaugh was on his way to Charleston on Saturday when he had car trouble and stopped.

Alex Murdaugh has been taken to a Lowcountry hospital, Griffin said.

Managed to remove and repack exactly 1 trailer hub’s bearings in an afternoon of work. And that was using an air wrench to free the wheel and raise and lower the jacks. This old trailer is so weird I had to deflate the tire to get it out from under the wheel skirt. The tire store used a much bigger air wrench than mine to put it on. Now I’d have a fighting chance to change the spare in the North Woods.

I’ll do the other tomorrow—it will take half as long because I know twice as much.

This family was a People magazine story a few weeks back. Apparently the son, drunken driving his dad’s boat, fought off friends in the group who’d tried to say “you’re too drunk, let me drive”, killed a girl last year, very rich and powerful mom & dad got him off the hook…

I’d be looking at that girl’s boyfriend and father as Suspect #1 and Suspect #2.

Hi there, I am in fact a giant idiot and I noticed the keywords “UPC CODES” so reflexively I am compelled to point out that you can get an exceptionally high-quality barcode scanner on eBay for about $20. Look for a Motorola/Symbol LS2208 or a Honeywell 3800g. Don’t spend a minute typing in UPC codes by hand.

This is reason #831 why I’m single. *snort*

weirdness in South Carolina

There was an article in people magazine about the family (about the mom and son who were killed as noted above, the latter of whom was reportedly a rapist/murderer himself) just a couple is months ago. We read it and both thought it was really weird and there was much more to the story.

There’s also the one surviving son. The bad son was killed but…

Could the motive be a revenge killing?

At the time of his death, Paul was charged with three felonies for allegedly killing a teenager named Mallory Beach on a boat in 2019. Authorities said Paul was intoxicated when he drove the boat into a bridge piling near Parris Island after an oyster roast. He had pleaded not guilty. Her body was not found for a week. Beach’s mother filed a wrongful death suit against the Murdaughs.

Surviving members of the family said Paul had received death threats over Beach’s death in the months leading up to his own murder.

Does anyone know what’s going on in Buffalo, NY regarding the mayoral race? I got an email about a judge deciding that an independent candidate was to be included on the November ballot, which seems out of the norm according to things I’m seeing, but I don’t see any history on the topic. wivb.com

Hi from Rochester, an hour east. Both here and in Buffalo, the establishment D candidates lost in the primaries, and the D primaries in the cities are essentially the elections.

In Rochester, the incumbent D was mired in several scandals and a lousy response to the police killing of Daniel Prude. Voters wanted someone cleaner and got it. Malik Evans, who won the primary, is still relatively establishment Dem and will have no challenger in November.

Byron Brown in Buffalo had some lesser scandals but wasn’t expected to lose… especially not to an actual socialist, India Walton. So when he did, not just the D establishment but some of the business community freaked out, and some Republicans approached Brown about running a write-in campaign to save his seat. (An early supporter was notorious RWNJ developer Carl Paladino, who then pulled back when it was clear he was actually hurting Brown’s chances.)

There’s no sore loser law in NY, so Brown supporters launched a longshot attempt to get him a third party ballot line, and have now persuaded a R judge to approve it. And so Buffalo now has a Brown-Walton rematch for November.

OK this is weird, a Todd Rundgren show tune

Todd Rundgren - The Smell of Money (Lyrics Below) (HQ)

My boy I say you’re unaware of
Things that I am unaware of
The things they say behind one’s back
That you suspect but aren’t quite sure of
Don’t say you haven’t noticed
The smell of money is all about me
I just can’t rid myself
Of it’s overpowering bouquet
My inner beauty cursed with obscurity
By a scent that can’t be washed away
I don’t know who you think I am
But if I’m who I think I am
Then there’s no cranny I’ve examined
Taints the air where ere I am
But don’t say you haven’t noticed
The smell of money wafts all about me
It neutralizes any other odors I convey
Best friends won’t tell me
They know I’m suffering
With a scent that can’t be washed away
The stench of money
Is reeking off of me
A mix of cheap cologne
Weasel pheromone and rotted grave
Thank dad and mommy
I’m filthy, stinking rich
So I can say to you “Piss off”
I bathe, I bathe

Yup, the gunfire phase is starting. It did take longer than I expected. Downtown free-fire zones should really help with property values.

I have no idea why the cops, and their bosses, thought that leaving these thugs on the street was in anyway wise.

If aliens have managed to reach our solar system, it doesn’t matter if they are smarter or physically stronger — they have technology that can destroy us and take over our planet without a second thought. The British and Spanish weren’t smarter than the native inhabitants of the Western hemisphere— but they easily conquered their nations and almost wiped them out because of advantages in technology, knowledge, and military strategy.

I’m watching Spike Lee’s documentary NYC Epicenters, and man is it a tough watch. I’m barely 1/4 of the way through the first episode (Covid), and I had to take a break. Spike is a good interviewer.

spoiler for sad story

There’s this ER nurse, from Lincoln Hospital, the closest hospital to Yankee Stadium, and he’s got a funny story about how the busiest night is always when the Red Sox are in town. The ER just full of guys with Boston accents who need stitches, or x-rays and a cast, or concussion protocol (which sounds awful when I see it written down but it’s really funny how he tells it, he’s clearly enjoying himself, and Spike illustrates this part of the interview with a bunch of footage of fan fights involving dozens of people at a time)…

but then they get to April and it’s the height of Covid, and he broke down crying telling about the day they had 34 patients die in one shift.

I feel obligated to watch the whole 8 hours, but I expect the 9/11 and Sandy episodes to be just as difficult. It’s been a rough couple of decades here in the city that doesn’t sleep.

If they see some economic advantage in supporting/opposing a particular law, they will do that. Not out of conviction, just out of profitability.

Corporations can be legal persons, but they are not people. They have no souls or morality.

There’s also situations where corporations support, or pull support for certain politicians are not necessarily readily obvious on first glace or from a position of ignorance.

Toyota got a lot of shit for donations to 1/6 traitors, but they aren’t donating to them because they are fascists. I never heard anything about who else they were donating to besides the asshats, but regardless Toyota donates to certain politicians because they had a plan that is getting fucked up by reality (and Tesla).

Toyota is lobbying hard against forced adoption of full Battery Electric Vehicles because they had a plan to push Hybrids as the standard for passenger vehicles. After that they wanted to then replace the gasoline portion of the equation with renewable biofuels or hydrogen fuel cells. Unfortunately Tesla came around and fucked up these plans by helping to push BEVs more into the mainstream with longer range much faster than they would have been previously.

This leads Toyota to dump a lot of money into politicians fighting Electric vehicle mandates, who unfortunately tend to have a Venn diagram overlap with Climate Change deniers, who then have another serious Venn diagram overlap with the 1/6 MAGAt traitors.

So it’s more complicated than it’s made out. Toyota wants you to buy Priuses and Mirais instead of Teslas and Chevy Bolts and that lead them to give money to monsters. They shouldn’t get a pass for this, but it wasn’t necessarily done by malice or in support of climate change denial or fascist treason.

corporations can be legal persons but they are not people.

real human beings have many sources of motivation for their actions: moral, religious, ideological, aesthetic, etc…

corporations exist to make money, and that is generally the basis of all their major decisions

I’m up in western NY for the Labor Day holiday.

Walked the 5K (Oaktree Half Marathon & 5K) with my brother like I usually do. It’s sponsored by the Genesee Valley Conservancy so I usually toss in some extra money for them with my registration. Start was a bit rainy, but it stopped partway through.

They are currently busy replacing ash trees in the area that have been killed by emerald ash borers with a more diverse selection of native trees.

Letter from today’s electoral-vote.com

R.L. in South Pasadena, CA, writes: According to Gov. Tate Reeves (R-MS), Southerners don’t fear COVID because they believe in “Eternal Life.” FiveThiryEight has a similar take. In her article for FiveThirtyEight, Natalie Jackson, who grew up in Leon County, TX—which is 72 percent white Christian, including 44 percent white evangelical and where the Orange One carried 87 percent of the vote in 2020—recounts the stories of three unvaccinated people she went to high school with who have died of COVID. She says: “When my classmates were hospitalized with COVID-19, there were repeated calls for prayers and proclamations that God would provide healing. When they died, those prayer requests became comments that ‘God called [them] home.’”

I propose we call this phenomenon “Self-Rapture” [as-in a self-own or an own goal in soccer]. Of course, it doesn’t take a large logical leap to realize this is also suicide by religion.

And there is another word we use to describe a person who commits suicide in the name of religion and in doing so takes innocents with them (in this case, by infecting unvaccinated children or immunocompromised individuals): Terrorist.

Along with self-raptured, there’s COVIDed (verbified) or just plain COVIDied

A 30-year teaching veteran was one of 15 Miami-Dade County public school staff members who died of COVID-19 in just 10 days as Florida continues to reel amid the continuing, overwhelming toll of an unfettered pandemic.

“It’s a tremendous loss,” said a school official, referring to the death of longtime teacher Abe Coleman, 55, earlier this week.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has dismissed the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations and signed an executive order banning mask mandates at schools

The DeSantis administration has consistently refused to release COVID-related public records, which not only hurts our efforts to contain this deadly virus, it is also unlawful,”
———
The state Health Department was sued earlier this week by the Florida Center for Government Accountability and Democratic state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith for not providing detailed, daily statistics about Florida’s surging COVID-19 cases in violation of the state’s open-records laws.

The suit argues that the DeSantis administration is deliberately manipulating COVID-19 data to make it appear the problem was not as dire as it actually is.

There’s also situations where corporations support, or pull support for certain politicians are not necessarily readily obvious on first glace or from a position of ignorance.

…..

Why is making money a legitimate excuse for doing evil? The Sacklers weren’t promoting opioids out of malice to harm people — they were doing it strictly for profit. The tobacco companies weren’t pushing a deadly product because they wanted to hurt people — they were doing it for profit. To quote the New Testament: “For the love of money is the root of all of evil”

Yes there are malicious people who take pleasure in harming others. There is racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. But pursuit of money needs to rank up there; lack of concern for others or our planet because your focus is on profit can and does produce as much harm as deliberate malice.

There might be a minority of vegans who want to ban animal products but not enough to sway a series of state legislatures…

And again, GOP politicians can cheat on their spouses and lie and steal and then turn to God for forgiveness and have their slate wiped clean, but Democrats who support abortion or contraception or gay marriage can never be forgiven by the Lord until they repent and change their ways (and party affiliation while they’re at it)

the cheap dollar store readers are generally ok for reading and computer work, but there is a large enough difference between the two eyes (something like 20/20 in the left and 20/60 in the right, but not focusing for close things like threading needles anymore) that I actually need prescription glasses to even them out.

For my cataract surgery, my request was not for distance vision, but the ability to use my computer and to read without glasses. So the new lenses were designed for intermediate vision and that works perfectly for me; my only problem is that because I had been so nearsighted my entire life, I occasionally forget to put on glasses when driving the car — but as long as it’s a short distance that doesn’t require reading street signs, I can manage safely.

One of my contacts is for up close, the other for distance. I may need to adjust for intermediate. My floor-sweeping is not what it used to be. Maybe it’s those brooms at work. Or the stupid kitchen linoleum; two shades of gray with flecks of every color embedded. Or is it a food scrap? And OMG the dustpans. One looks like a snow shovel with a lot of miles on it.

Sounds like my Mom, she wanted good close vision and didn’t care if she’d need glasses to drive. Said she’d been wearing glasses as long as she’d been driving anyway — and she was reading and quilting for eight years after she stopped driving. I’ll choose the same when it comes to my turn.

The Hillbillies are European immigrant whites from the British Isles— they arrived here primarily in the 18th Century, not later. Ethnically they are the same as the Founding Fathers, but without any education or urban sophistication. Many probably are Trump loyalists in the modern world. Of course, a large percentage of the Trump base are educated, just racist like JD Vance.

re: #370 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I’m going out on a limb here and saying that Vance’s book is basically full of shit. I doubt seriously his tales of those dumb hillbillies are anything more than shit he made up. Along with a fair portion of his biographical info. He also works for Thiel’s venture capital firm. He’s a phony and I hope the people of Ohio figure that out.

I’ve said it before, but a much better book about how southern Ohio became an opioid mess and the prevalence of poverty became the norm is The Glass House by Brian Alexander. It’s about how Anchor Hocking fucked over the town of Lancaster,Ohio with promises that were never kept in exchange for huge tax breaks that underfunded schools, infrastructure and a lot more. That led to poverty and huge jumps in drug use and addiction. It’s also the story of why I left Ohio 30 yrs ago. That’s a book that should get made into a full length documentary.

You live there, and I bet you could write a much better book than Vance’s. Rural America isn’t what it was when we were kids, all the myths of it being a farmer’s paradise with an idyllic Mayberry life should be dead by now, but Americans are bad about keeping up with current reality.

I not only live here, but I lived in Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati during my freshman year at University of Cincinnati. Same kind of Appalachian folks he talks about living in Middletown. He is totally full of shit. It was obvious to me that he despised his parents.
He even changed his name. He was NOT born a Vance.
