There’s something about the lonesome sound of Delta Blues slide guitar that always soothes my soul and puts me in that peaceful, meditative state of mind. I hope you feel as good listening to it as I do playing it for ya!

Success = owning the liberals

It’s like that one New Yorker post-apocalypse cartoon, except instead of ‘Value for Shareholders’, the punch line is ‘But for a beautiful moment, we owned the libs’.

The press have accepted the gamification of US politics to the point that when people die it’s not about their death, it’s about the optics of their death, the rhetorical utility. But they do that because the culture does that already, and their job really isn’t to report the news but to tell people that spend money what they want.

The thing is…this isn’t some kind of “own the libs” thing, it’s an empire thing. To inflict control on countless people through violence you have to construct a way to talk about that death and pain that discounts that death and pain, so that all the mid-tier people whose labor keeps the threshing machines running don’t think in terms of the people they’re grinding up as people, and so that the high-tier people can ease their consciences by believing that this particular Moloch is necessary…and so is the next one….

None of this language style is new, it just that this time the burnt offering is…you, and more generally white American civilians dying in-country.

But it’s being published and consumed because it matches pre-existing forms of talking about the meaning of dead people: dead foreigners, dead children hit by bombs, dead black people whose death at the hands of the state is described in passive voice, dead AIDS patients, et cetera.

The core trick of empire is to create a machine powered by human suffering, then convince the operators that they could never be thrown in because there’s an entirely real and solid ranking system of people and only the absolute bottom people get processed into fuel…and every single time this is a lie.

Someone put up on nextdoor.com that the local Texas Roadhouse has a table with 13 chairs set up to honor the soldiers from Afghanistan. I’m rather annoyed by the display, so I responded asking what about the other 2500, and that these things really cheapen the honoring of the military, especially when they are done this frequently.

I also went protesting today…first service. Next weekend is their official celebration of the fifth anniversary of “Trinity Church.” I’m going to have to gut it up and be out there with proposed signs “Five Years of Mark Driscoll’s Grift in AZ” and “Five Years of Mark Driscoll breaking up AZ Families.” Or something.

the strange thing is that there is no evolutionary imperative for covid to become deadlier. it just “wants” to be transmissable and so the versions that are successful are the most transmissable. The problem is that in some cases, it’s deadly, and in more than some cases, it has long-term negative effects on the body. It’s in kind of a weird place. We all get colds and most of us survive them, but you get over the cold and move on. With covid, though, the virus can get what it needs from you—easy transmissability—and then leave your body pretty much wrecked, possibly permanently. That in some ways makes it way more dangerous than Ebola. At least with Ebola, you can mostly take reasonable precautions and not die. With covid, you can take reasonable precautions, still get infected with it, more than likely not have any long-term negative outcome from it, but still have a concerning risk of dying or, more likely, needing a lifetime of kidney dialysis. It’s like it’s found a sweet spot for being an absolute bitch of an illness.

re: #16 The Ghost of a Flea

Mind you, this isn’t the only thing fucked up about the US press or the culture that facilitates it.

“Both Sides” is rampant because it’s both pandering and allows for a superficial stance of lofty indifference that mimics a Western aesthetic of what “intellectual” is but actually is just elaborate explanations for passivity in the face of the status quo that’s killing people. These deaths can’t be commented on without suggesting that a progressive or reactionary response would be worse…but since reactionaries speak entirely in existing cultural norms, really the support of the status quo only impedes progress: reaction can be assimilated, it’s butcher’s bill simply featuring more of the same.

There is a kind of person that will argue that the current rate of death and misery is not suggestive of systemic failure that could produce more death and misery: it is precisely the correct level of death and misery that can be sustained indefinitely because the dying and suffering are statistics, abstractions. This justification is relaxed-fit: as deaths and suffering expand, the allowance of death and suffering also expands.

This is frequently motivated reasoning—the status quo makes people a lot of money, and how much money is directly related to how many people get put in the brazen bull—but there is also just this terrifying instinct that whatever is, is normal and acceptable by virtue of it being able to happen.

It’s quite possible for a less-dangerous or even harmless coronavirus to crowd out the current strains, if it’s transmissible enough. There’s no evolutionary reason why it would have to get more deadly. I wouldn’t exactly count on it, though, so get vaccinated, as if anybody on this site needs to be reminded.

We are infected with plenty of viruses that are completely harmless, and plenty of virus DNA is coded into our genes from millions of years of evolution. Some of these viruses are biophages (bacteria viruses) which might regulate our gut biomes, even.

There’s a thing in political science called sadopopulism…

…and it’s pretty much what Republicans do or try to do: make things worse for their constituents but give them scapegoats and outlets for their despair and rage.

What they do on social media is…single serving size sadopopulism.

Find a target, throw everyone that direction, enjoy the cruelty and reinforce group cohesion.

The man then engaged in a firefight with law enforcement officers before he was taken into custody, and he later attempted to take a gun from an officer at a hospital, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.
Afterward, deputies found four people dead: a man, a woman and the infant inside the home, and another woman inside a second house on the property, Judd said. An 11-year-old girl had also been shot multiple times and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital for surgery. Another child, originally reported as missing, was located alive and well, he said.

“This man killed four people this morning, tried to kill our deputies and then gave up,” Judd said. The suspect described himself as “a survivalist” and confessed to being on meth, he said.

snip

The quintuple shooting began Saturday evening when a woman called authorities about a suspicious vehicle and said that a man who was parked outside her house told her, “God sent me here to speak with one of your daughters,” Judd told reporters on Sunday.
A deputy responded within six minutes and did not find the suspect or the car at the residence, he said.
About nine hours later, at about 4:30 a.m., a deputy two miles away heard two volleys of automatic gunfire. Deputies responded and calls reporting an active shooting began coming in as well, the sheriff said.

Opinion: For Navajo, crowded homes have always been a lifeline. The pandemic threatens that.
By Hailey Sadler and Darian Woehr

Kay Atene’s family lives together on the same red earth in Oljato-Monument Valley in Utah that her great-grandparents returned to after surviving the “Long Walk” more than 150 years ago.
Generations living together is central to how the Navajo have navigated crises for centuries. But the coronavirus has put that in jeopardy: Crowded homes have become one of the deadliest places to be during the pandemic.

When she leaps on the bed, she goes over to the side where the top mattress has been pushed away from the bottom mattress a little, so that she can use the little ledge as a foothold and make it a double leap rather than just one big single one. It’s still the equivalent of a person dunking a basketball in a 10-foot hoop and then using that as a station on the way up another 4 or 5 feet. Still, I’m the only one apparently who can get the dry food out of the bag, so I’m safe.

This might be more convincing if Fauci were in charge of NIH, instead of one of its subsidiary groups (one of 27, to be exact). As it is, the air is thick with the odor of someone pulling junk out of his ass.

A point being missed in this Richard Spencer thing is…he was never The Guy, except that the media liked him because he presented the correct aesthetic for pointing a camera at. He was a marketable with all the bell and whistles: clockably Nazi but easy on the eyes and ears. Very digestible for news-pap.

So him being fucked over—if he is fucked over, because god knows these people do nothing but claim to be broke to elicit more cash—doesn’t signify anything. In the greater motion of fascism in the country, this is just a another wave that crested and broke.

Indeed, if Spencer signifies anything, it’s that you can’t import Germanic aesthetics to make a viable American fascism, while people working entirely from existing American reactionary narratives are doing very well for themselves.

There are three aspect to what’s going on in Texas.

1. laws that essentially allow ‘the state’ (including the feds) to suppress human rights do not ‘take those rights away’.
Nor does passing laws ‘grant’ or ‘give’ them.
Civil rights weren’t new rights granted to blacks.
They always had those rights because they are intrinsic.
Their exercise was repressed by the state.

Medical decisions are natural, intrinsic, human rights.

2. Power makes laws.
Not logic, or consistency, or rationality or science, or religion or morality.
Laws are made because those in power can.
See 1 above.

3. The ‘why’ of a law, the true justification, does still matter.
Those in power don’t need a reason, except to sell it and keep the masses placated.
Though they do try to explain it while at the same time often throwing hypocrisy out the door.
Separation of church and state doesn’t mean someone can’t try to use his religion as the ‘why’.

It is here that they fail. See 1 and 2 above.

The actual issue of reproductive rights w/r/t abortion is: when, in the seamless progression from long before fertilization to birth, it ‘becomes’ a single, discrete human life with (in the United States) constitutional rights and protections even though it is still a potentiality and not a certainty.

The problem is that those who promote ‘protection’ are not trying to define when, whether or how it has human rights or merely constitutionally protected rights.

If they did, then we could have reasoned and legal arguments over what happens when individual rights conflict.
We have those arguments all the time: Your fist/my nose. My pig farm/your residential neighborhood.

We don’t have that argument here because that is not what they want.

They want to instill in the blastocyst/zygote/embryo/fetus the superior power to compel the actually existing and born human into subjugation to it, and to have that power enforced by government.

Because they know women can be trusted to decide promptly if they want a pregnancy or not.

The problem with this issue always begins with the disingenuousness in stating their position.

Again, see 2.

to my point about missing the point…

…how much of what Richard Spencer believes is now articulated by Republican elected officials or important reactionary cultural leaders…just minus the very obvious German imports (Hail Trump)?

Especially notable since Spencer was rejected by his base for…in 2020 regretting voting for Trump?

Like, it’s on some minimal level gratifying that he’s fucked…if he actually is…but it’s like cheering the ejection of the Strassers from the NSDAP.

The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 5, 2021 • 3:37:49pm

Rick WIlson is the embodiment of what I mean when I say that the press is full of people that think in aesthetic terms.

He’s an ad man talking about politics in ad men terms: here’s the victory or failure purely as a function of optics. And he’s a failed ad man, because he didn’t anticipate Trump’s appeal and a lot of his takes on how Biden should be were stale…but it’s not going to pay his bills to ever admit that his work didn’t have the kind of impact he presents it as having. But he’s constantly given air by other pundits who will never acknowledge that their shop talk about “optics” is basically a television medium act of cold reading while acknowledging the hits and ignoring the misses.

And…he’s the tip of the iceberg of piss, because there are people worth hundreds of millions of dollars that deeply want to hear what Rick Wilson tells them…that the current state of the Republican Party isn’t the product of years and years of doing Rick Wilson-level lying and shucking, but some kind of anomaly where the obedient untermensch they controlled have been wrested from them.

Saving it for another day, Dude, but it’s ALL aesthetics.

Well…yes…but when somebody is talking that doesn’t understand that it’s all aesthetics, and therefore his aesthetics are meaningless, and gets millions and millions of dollars for it, it’s counterproductive. I’m not saying “we need to strip down to material conditions” because that’s basically impossible at this point…but this particular variety of unseriousness and preoccupation with image is going to kill us faster than others.

For Rick this is a game of rhetoric where the win conditions is he makes more money and owns the people he dislikes, and the loss is he makes less money and still feels superior to the people he dislikes. Maybe he sincerely believes that he can fight fascism with ad copy that talks shit rougher than Democrats, but as far as I can tell the fascists are expanding deeper into the cultural space that Rick Wilson considers himself an expert on.

Even if everything is aesthetics…his aesthetics don’t sell as well as he presents them to. He’s a carny that got undercut by another carny with a raunchier tent show, so now he’s acting lack he has some kind of impresario talent other than being the less-raunchy tent show guy.

Hard manual work in the Alabama sun kicked my ass today. I’ll insist that I didn’t come to that conclusion gladly.

I understand that you’re not making that assertion from a place of affirmation…probably more anxiety or despair, if you’re like me.

I mean, I have all this stuff in my head in paragraph form because this is what I think about…the possibility that life will only get worse because the flaw in people is not ideological, or even truly cultural, but in a cognitive inability to pry fast, self-preserving judgements away from long-perspective ones.

And that inability is exploitable.

I have to finish with that last bit because…I survived a tiny microcosm of unreality that offered me participation in artifice or death: that’s what an abusive family is, a cult so small that the cultural meaning of kinship is part of the captivating ideology; nuclear fascism. And the one thing I hold onto is that quite often we’re presented, both by abusers and dupes who can’t yet see abuse, with false choices—A or B, in or out, manufactured consent—and while sometimes you can’t win, denying the stupid, cruel choice is valid is the first step in resistance.

I think Solomon had some kind of bit about this.

Texas doesn’t want a progressive. But I think Texas will accept a Moderate.
Most of you know already I’m in favor of Clay Jenkins out of Dallas County.

Clay has grabbed the Refugee issue bull by the horns and made a difference.
Clay has been the only County leader who has promoted the Science behind Covid and has worked tirelessly to get folks vaccinated.
Clay is a man of Faith. Now I know how that rolls here but to rural Texans that is huge. I’ve watched the man work and he is Christian in WORD AND ACTION. He is not a Dominionist in any way that I can see.

Beto portrays no faith that I can see. The same words over and over again. and he won’t win. Down the road maybe but not now.

They might be getting that info from a particular source that was damaged or destroyed in Ida.

When you look up weather for “San Diego, CA” without using a specific zip code, you get the weather and temp at the Airport. (This is usually the coolest area of town because it’s right on the bay). If you want other parts of town you need to put in a zip code.

Where I live, in a city just north of the SD city limits, it is 86 degrees. The airport is 74.

re: #181 Jack Burton, Gunner on Death Star of David

Normally the temp on the home page comes from Philadelphia International Airport. Usually the temp there is warmer than the rest of the county. I live in NE Philly and the temp is a little cooler.

I can’t deal with clowns. Every time I think of one, I think of the song Dr. Demento used to play, “Kinko The Clown”. It’s exactly what you would expect.

I was really put off by his early 2019 Vanity Fair cover story. Immediately after losing his 2018 senate race, putting himself out there as THE presidential candidate, with a coverline quote that just exuded entitlement.

OK, I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets this vibe from him.

re: #176 Dave In Austin

A bunch of failed runs.

His comment in El Paso about literally wanting to take basically “Ban Guns” in Texas (Alrighty then…).

A progressive Bernie Style agenda that works in the 5 major cities in Texas, it leaves the rest of the state flat.

Just from a quick Wiki search, Clay does seem like a very likely D candidate for TX, except that he doesn’t seem to have much of a record in office. How much is that likely to count?

FWIW, I will also confess to being less-than-over-impressed by Beto O’Rourke: but of course, if I lived in TX, I’d vote for him over ANY Republican…..

This is a deal-breaker in Texas, and honestly although many left-of-center people refuse to admit it, it’s a deal-breaker pretty much everywhere outside of San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, NYC, and Austin.
