I wonder if they had any coordination problems in effecting the arrest of the double murder suspect in Llewellen, since Garden County is in Mountain Time and Keith County is in Central Time.

Cannot get my head around this contradiction.

The Texas abortion bill makes it possible to follow and sue people who can afford to leave the state for an abortion where it is still not illegal.

I used that term because I realize that the Culture Wars are still raging, and Texas has just made a major breakthrough.

And once the GOP is in a position to simply ignore any state election outcomes it dislikes in 2024, they are really going to come down in the name of Fundamentalist Christian Theocracy.

re: #382 Hecuba’s daughter

The only state you cannot gerrymander is one with a single district.

That map Sen. Morfeld posted also cuts more of my district into NE-1, to add more extremely conservative rural voters to NE-1, to offset the liberal voters of NE-2.

The proposed map cuts right through the middle of Omaha, shearing off the majority-African American section of North Omaha and adding it to NE-1.

The law also contradicts another Texas culture war law they passed earlier in the year, claiming you cannot deplatform or sue anyone for what is said about a political position on social media.

Parent Assaults Catholic School Teacher after Viewing Video of Teacher Abusing Her Son (Friendly Atheist)

She was called to the school to view limited clips of the incident, and attacked the schoolteacher in the meeting. She says she appreciated seeing the teacher lying on the ground in the same way the teacher did with her child.

She is suing the Grovetown, Georgia Catholic School to get all the video of the incident released.

The parent was arrested for battery and jailed. She has a GoFundMe which has raised $14,000 so far.

The reason the meeting was taking place was because an incident report was filed against the teacher. She has not been arrested.

The last time I crossed the Canadian border (Sarnia, Ontario), Canadian border services asked me for all my social media information.

They found it difficult to believe I’m not on any social media services.

Being stupid and honest, I did tell them I comment on political blogs. Wonkette was a bit difficult to describe to them (and why I would travel to London to see someone from that site).

From her GoFundMe page (where she has her mugshot up as her photo):

For 3 hours I watched his teacher spank him, hit him in the head, slap him with a book, shove him to the ground, snatch him up by one arm and carry him across the room multiple times, slam him in his seat to make him eat lunch alone in time-out, pick him up by his ankles and hold him on his neck/head, grab his face so hard his cheeks were touching in his mouth as she was nose to nose with him, amongst other things. The daycare director dismissed her employee’s actions and ensured me she would be keeping her job. She claimed to see nothing wrong with the teacher’s abusive behavior until she could no longer deny what we both had watched and asked me what I wanted to do about it……. I was only allowed to watch the footage from ONE day and only ONE of the two cameras in the room. I had several employees try to stop me from watching it after I had seen “certain events”.

This?

Maybe we need to be more careful with terms like “follow the science”?

Experts disagree with one another on all these decisions, there is “science” on both sides, and this sort of rhetoric is often used as a cudgel to create a false sense of consensus.

that all science does not agree is besides the point
in fact it’s partially how actual science works

ALL the science is on one side.
That is the side of science.
anything else is not science.
crackpottery masquerading as science, however well dressed, is not science.

Two videos went viral last week on Tik-Tok showing a Christian man berating two women on a public beach in Ft. Collins, Colo. for wearing “revealing swimsuits.”

He has attempted to tell his side of the story on Instagram, going all-in on how women shouldn’t make themselves “objects” (Christians make women objects, and the Bible says something about him tearing out his own eye, but they don’t read that book).

He then veers into transphobia for no apparent reason.

He also claims that “the truth will set you free” (referring to his harassment of random women in public in the name of religion).

The whole “women are obligated to uphold purity culture” bullshit is one of my biggest triggers. Its roots are deeply misogynist and come from the basic American Christian nationalist principle that sex is only to be had within marriage, and under no other circumstances. The idea that men are helpless before the Power of Boobs (tm) really just comes down to an insecurity that indulging in one’s fantasy will cause one to burn in Hell for all eternity.

Dopamine Fish  Sep 8, 2021 • 11:56:59am

The Christian Church’s inability to properly instruct youth about sex - instead, fanatically adhering to the principle that sex within marriage is hallowed, and sex outside of it is a damnable offense - has caused a great deal of consequences that church leaders would be appalled (and slightly turned on) to see. The kinkiest people I’ve ever met are mostly former Catholics. I have multiple evangelical friends, married for over a decade, who still have serious hang-ups about having sex with their own spouses because of the shaming that the churches they grew up in did. It’s a fucking disaster that nobody wants to talk about because even saying the word “SEX” in a church gets you death glares and morality lessons. Christ on a cracker, it makes me angry.

That’s what The Satanic Temple is trying to do with their suit against Texas.

They tried a similar suit against a restrictive Missouri law and the federal courts threw it out.

Christians and conservatives don’t give a diddly-damn about other people’s religious rights, particularly non-Christians.

As for the “science” aspect, they’ve already gotten away with the argument “that’s just your opinion man.”

Hm. Febrile seizures occur in up to 10% of all children. They also have an elevated risk of developing epilepsy.

Of course suing a daycare for violating the ADA will make you a pariah, and do you really want to put your children in a daycare which discriminates against the disabled?

Here in France we’re starting the trial of the Bataclan terrorist attack.

The TV news had a little segment about the people who lied about being victims, sometimes to get money, more often for screwed up mental reasons. Some of them were clearly operating on Trumpian style NPD aggrandisement.

People who just *have* to be at the center of things.

re: #12 Hecuba’s daughter

Is it possible that some of the 76% have their ballots lost in the DeJoy slowdown of the postal service?

my reading is the percent returned may not matter too much

my go to, electoral-vote.com, has a good write up today about his chances

But how many votes will he ultimately need to keep his job? That depends on turnout, of course…

Point is, between recent past history, and the brisk rate with which ballots are being cast in the current election, it is likely turnout will be quite high this time. Let’s estimate that two-thirds of eligible voters cast a vote. That’s a bit of a bump over any other recent election, because everyone’s getting a ballot in the mail. We don’t want to bump it too much, however, because studies show that people who want to vote make a point of doing so, absentee ballot or not. The ease with which people can participate in this election will probably get some percentage of the population to turn out that otherwise would not have done so, but we just don’t think it will be enough to drive turnout into the 70s.

Anyhow, there are 22,249,865 eligible voters in California. If two-thirds of them vote, that’s 14,833,243 people. Half of that plus one is 7,416,621 votes. Our crude math from above suggests Newsom already has 4,047,883 votes banked. If so, then he would need 3,368,738 more “keep” votes out of 8,399,522, or about 40%. And again, this is assuming pretty high turnout. If you project turnout to be 60% instead, then that would be 13,349,919 total votes, half of that plus one would be 6,674,960, and Newsom would need 2,627,077 of 6,916,198 remaining votes, or about 38%.

click the link and look for ‘run the newsom numbers”
it goes into the likely breakdown so far (a 1.5M vote lead for keep newsom) and an R surge on election day

I think we need to attack the anti-abortion position from a First Amendment standpoint. They’re imposing their religious beliefs on all of us, and not even science agrees with their crazy about when life begins.

At the end of an individual human life, doctors and lawyers and clergy seem to be in general agreement that brain activity (or lack of) is how we draw the line between a human being and a meat-bag full of spare parts. I’m open to using that same criteria to define the beginning of an individual human life.

Unlike most of their entries, she did not push antivax memes (other than a “frame” around her photo saying she wouldn’t take the vaccine). She mostly used her Facebook account for her multi-level marketing hunbot scheme.

But because of that frame, she was targetted by antivaxxers to convince her to avoid seeking medical care.

Like the others, just as she was going on a ventilator she asked those to pray for her and would be out in a couple days.

Her cousin posted her loss, also noting that cousin had already lost their son.

re: #106 DodgerFan1988

The high seas, while appearing borderless and free, are, in fact, some of the most tightly regulated places on Earth. The cruise ship industry in particular is bound by intricate rules. As Romundt put it: “We were like, ‘This is just so hard.’”

WOMP WOMP.

The final entry on the FAQ page, regarding the possibility of having pets on board, gave a bracing insight into the tension between the idea of freedom and the reality of hundreds of people closely cohabiting on a cruise ship. The answer linked to a separate document, containing a 14-point list of conditions including one that declared no animal should exceed 20lbs in weight, and any barking or loud noises could not last for longer than 10 minutes. If a pet repeatedly disturbed the peace - more than three times a month or five times in a year - it would no longer be allowed to live on board.

LOL.

But while Panama was happy to have the ship moored off its coast, it specified that the ship had to remain officially designated as a ship. Which led to another difficulty: the discharge of sewage. Though the ship had an advanced wastewater management system, which could turn sewage into drinking-quality water, they were not permitted to discharge this wastewater into Panamanian waters, and so would have had to sail 12 miles out every 20 days or so to empty tanks into international waters.

Turns out Libertarian ideas ARE full of shit.

The main problem with libertarian sea settlements should be obvious:

1) They are only viable if placed close enough to land to allow for easy movement of people and supplies.

2) To be in international waters and subject to fewer laws, they have to be a good distance AWAY from land.

It’s just not physically workable.

im gonna strongly disagree

there are two separate issues here and must not be conflated

1. citizenry - when, in the seamless progression from long before fertilization to birth, it ‘becomes’ a single, discrete human life with constitutional rights and equal protections.

- up to now that line has been defined as surviving the birth process, natural or surgical, even for one second.
- at times the death of a pregnant woman has led to a stiffer criminal charges. that does not recognize constitutional personhood in the ‘unborn’ in general or specific.

2. abortion - in the seamless progression from long before fertilization to sometime before birth, are there any circumstances where the state has a legitimate interest in questioning or preventing the procedure.

justification for one point in time over another is irrelevant and counterproductive.
Scientific, religious, coin toss, rational, logical, hypocritical.

while still recognizing that with ‘seamless’ a one day old blastocyst is a fundamentally different circumstance than say two weeks before a projected birth.

justification only leads to “my way is right and here’s why”.

- i suggest that as with birth, until there is inarguable science (which given the reaction to covid might never happen), any such point or definition is arbitrary.
