Meanwhile…

re: #18 Backwoods_Sleuth

Like Washington and Jefferson, he championed liberty. Unlike the founders, he freed his slaves

(CNN)It was 230 years ago Sunday that Robert Carter III, the patriarch of one of the wealthiest families in Virginia, quietly walked into a Northumberland County courthouse and delivered an airtight legal document announcing his intention to free, or manumit, more than 500 slaves.
He titled it the “deed of gift.” It was, by far, experts say, the largest liberation of Black people before President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Emancipation Act and Emancipation Proclamation more than seven decades later.
On September 5, 1791, when Carter delivered his deed, slavery was an institution, a key engine of the new country’s economy. But many slaveholders — including founding fathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who knew Carter — had begun to voice doubts.
That was the extent of their umbrage.
Chattel slavery was wrong, the men said, but they supposedly worried it was not practical to abolish the institution without societal and economic consequences.
“As it is, we have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other,” Jefferson wrote a fellow politician almost 30 years after Carter’s deed of gift.

Remember that superficial wound that Alex Murdaugh suffered during the mysterious drive-by shooting? Now his lawyer says it was WAY WORSE—

Alex Murdaugh’s injuries in a Sept. 4 shooting in Hampton County included an entry and exit wound, a skull fracture, and minor brain bleeding in two places, his lawyer said Thursday.

And the sheriff says that the incident report that says “no visible injuries” might have been a typo/computer error (even though there’s a place to “explain” the injuries.) He’s gonna check on that, y’all.

I really have zero patience left for these vax-denier assclowns: “scolding”?? SRSLY?
I mean, we Lizards here on this blog certainly scold the paste-eating goobers, and “insane”, “ignorant” and “obstinate” are among the more-respectable sobriquets we’ve applied to the virus-spreading cranks (however numerous they may be) - but how has the State of Kentucky (presumably the entity immediately responsible) handled their vaccine program outreach efforts? Insults? Dismissals? Mockery? Conical paper hats mandated for the non-vaccinated?
I’m guessing, if not an actual moron, Sen. Alvarado (being a red-state Republican legislator) feels obligated to act like one in public, but really? What efforts would he like to see implemented to boost KY’s miserable vaccination numbers?
I’m guessing he has no idea….

Measuring Mortality In The Pandemics Of 1918-19 And 2020-21
healthaffairs.org

“…The 675,000 deaths attributed to the influenza epidemic made up 0.64 percent of the total population, a little more than six in every thousand people. By contrast, the more than 500,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19 make up about 0.15 percent of the total population, or between one and two in every thousand people. If COVID-19 caused deaths at the same rate as the 1918 epidemic, the total would approach two million. Even the disturbing projections of more than to 600,000 deaths by July 1, 2021, would still remain below the rates recorded in the earlier epidemic.”

If we keep having waves, we’ll make it to 2 million.

Was there really a flu vaccine in 1920?
I could easily be wrong ,but I thought they weren’t developed until the 1970s.

But in any case, even per capita, the figures shouldn’t be considered comparable: yes, the US is a much more-populous country, but the standards of medical science and medical care ( and the availability/distribution of said care) are so much more advanced over 100 years ago, that there really is no excuse for COVID-19’s enormous toll.

No, there wasn’t one. I was hoping it was sparky enough, but I was definitely wrong. I just think that, when we’re trying to deal with the virus right now, it’s meaningless to run to % comparisons.

My patience isn’t running thin. It ran out a long time ago.

You either want the pandemic to end or you don’t. I’m pretty goddamn sick of pretending it’s anything else.

I think insurance companies should require it for coverage with exceptions only for legitimate medical reasons. No shot, no coverage. End of discussion. Last I checked, before the ACA, about 85% of Americans had coverage and the ACA raised that to somewhere over 90. If pushed, this alone could potentially get us up to herd immunity levels nationally, and we wouldn’t have to worry about vaccine mandates being enforced through other ways.

Hell even before COVID I supported vaccine mandates for everything else, especially MMR and Influenza. This insurance coverage way could be the way to go about it.

Students with “qualified and approved exemptions and conditional admissions” will still be able to opt out of getting the shots, but the proposal does not spell out what those might be.

California already has a pretty restrictive policy on vaccine waivers for schools. I would expect it would apply to this vaccine as well as all the others.

Amazing how short sighted Repugs are in their contempt for civilization and civilized values. When you decide to be un-civilized, as in disrupting an airline flight, things can go south in a hurry.
Speaking of south, many years ago, I took a very picturesque local flight in a DC-3 in the backlands of Brazil. The plane had a cargo interior, with fold up paratrooper seats along each wall. It was in good shape but more than a bit basic. It was a passenger- cargo flight, meaning they would take anything that would fit through the door if someone paid money for it. One passenger actually brought a crate of live chickens. There was no flight attendant as such. It had a separate radio operator who took care of matters in the cabin, if any. The passengers were mostly local bureaucrats rather than chicken farmers though. Everyone was very polite and cooperative. I actually wondered if this was because they were just nice people or because experience had taught them that outraged passengers and the radio operator would toss any disruptors out the door, regardless of altitude. One advantage of un-pressurized planes I guess.

I’m pretty sure air-dropping Jeanine Pirro over a populated area counts as a war crime.

Only if she lands on you.

What’s in SB2?

Covid emergency actions
mostly telling Beshear he’s not allowed to mandate or even suggest anything anymore

In theory. In practice, something’s only a war crime if non-Americans do it.

Greg, Greg, Greg. Can I call you Greg? No? Fuck you. Anyway, Greg. You douchecanoe. You absolute fucking dumbshit. Nobody is taking away anybody’s right to choose, unlike you, who seem to be hyper-fixated on taking away a woman’s right to choose. People are free not to get the COVID vaccine if they don’t want. That their choice comes with consequences is the very cornerstone of civilized society. Put bluntly: Sit the fuck down (OH WAIT) and shut the fuck up, son. The adults are talking.

Take him on a nice boat trip into international waters, perhaps a trip down to Cruz’s hangout in Cancun. After a nice vacation and a pleasant change of scenery, maybe he’ll come back with a truly more life-affirming philosophy.

At what point does this become negligent homicide? This is knowingly and willingly making a choice to hurt entire populations. Blatantly so. How is this even legal when public safety is an issue? Why do we even have fucking laws and legislatures if this level of fucking with people’s lives and well being is just ok because they say so? This is weakness, not strength, and the world is watching.

Fascists are losing their minds on Twitter pretending that public health is “fascism” and posing for each other by saying things like “Bring it on” where Biden will never see their dopey post.

They all think they’re heroes fighting a tyrant, and could all use some psychological help.

Not only that, they’re calling us hypocrites because we complained about Trump trying to be a dictator, but we have nothing to say about Biden supposedly actually being one. Now don’t get me wrong; I’m not a big fan of heavy-handed federal government action. But in the face of these authoritarian would-be dictators in Texas, Florida, and elsewhere, sometimes Teddy Roosevelt’s big stick has to come out.

After I got locked out for a week I insulted a Proud Boy post and got locked out again.
I targeted a Nazi. I guess it’s bad form.
I might have my account up by the weekend.
Maybe. I seriously question the worth of it.
I got an account smoked for saying less than Stonekettle does.
Like this.

I got thrown off Twitter for less.
But then again, who the fuck am I?

If you have as many followers as he does, your treatment will be the same as his. I’d be extremely surprised if that number was not a factor in the auto-suspend algorithm at Twitter, and a factor in human made decisions as well of course.
