My older daughter was 23 at the time. It was she who alerted me to the attacks. I was up but the TV was not on and I had not quite gotten around to checking the net, which would have flooded me with news instantly. She had arrived for work at the Sears Tower in Chicago and called to tell me that the building was being evacuated, “because of the plane crashes in New York.” I said, “Huh? What? Crashes, like more than one?” She explained and I turned the TV on to see the first tower collapse. I checked the net and thought, oh shit, this is going to be a big deal. I spent part of the day trying to calm people down and clarify the situation, to the extent that I understood it myself, for them. I knew we had taken a big hit, but nowhere close to fatal, and there would be a big response. My younger daughter asked me if I would be going back into the Army (I had retired the previous year). I told her I might, depending on the requirements of the situation. Osama bin Laden and AQ were not definitely identified as the perpetrators for several days, but they were suspect #1 from the beginning, at least to anyone who knew about recent history. I envisioned a worldwide attack on the Al Qaeda gang itself, perhaps brutally forceful, but not the invasion and occupation of whole countries. I reckoned without the ambition and duplicity of the Bush/Cheney gang and the legion of new-fangled “services contractors” who were waiting in the wings to cash in.

I happened to be staying in Atlanta with friends when 9/11 happened. I missed my flight home, not surprisingly so I went to an anime convention at the weekend. Talking to some folks, with my Dunning-Kreuger expertise from thirty years seeing reports of IRA attacks on the TV I said “You guys (Americans) are going to go bugfuck nuts for six months then hopefully you’ll start thinking rationally about this.”

I was at work in Valley Forge PA when a co-worker came in and plopped down into her chair. I asked her if traffic was that bad. She replied the a plane flew into the World Trade Center. I was the only person on the floor who had a radio and I turned it on to the all news radio station (KYW 1060 AM). Another person had internet access so he went to several news sites and found pictures and a tape of what happened. We were sent home and the roads were jammed. Fortunately I used mostly back roads so I got home in roughly about an hour. My dad called to make sure I was okay. I told him I was. My dad like then Gov Ridge was angry but he knew there was nothing he could do about it. I watched a local station that had a feed from the BBC. They were angry and upset too. I remember seeing Queen Elizabeth go into Westminster Abbey and the Star Spangled Banner being played instead of G-d Save the Queen. There were many people interviewed and one of them was Ehud Barak the former Defense Minister of Israel. He he said that America is going to have to check our backs whenever we go somewhere.

I was supposed to fly to the upper peninsula of Michigan to a job that day and walked over to my fathers house to say goodbye. As I walked in the door the phone rang and it was my sister, who said turn on the tv. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Needless to say I ended up driving to Michigan. Such a truly horrific and unforgettable day.

There was air traffic overhead at all times, very noisy. But eventually you just got used to hearing it, and it became part of the background scenery.

But when all the fuckery happened and the FAA called a ground stop, the lack of aircraft noise suddenly became very noticeable and somehow made the whole situation seem more immediate and dangerous to us just a mile or so away from the airport. The quiet was just creepy as hell.

Today reminds me of the individuals who ran towards the wreckage.
The cops and firemen and EMS.
Those who were lauded and celebrated as heroes. That is until the sickness and cancers and mental issues revealed themselves.
Many lost everything. Died horrible deaths.
And the GOP stood rank and file to deny those heroes and their families any help.
They had to rely upon the kindness of strangers.
The GOP got away with that. Paid no price.
Remember the turning away this nation did when it was time to put words into action.
See today as a lesson still unlearned.

Our building wasn’t quite as close to Sky Harbor at that time, but we were in the east flight path (the same flight path which would stop Mesa from putting up a proposed domed stadium a few years later) and the hard stop was fucking EERIE. That Thursday night my boyfriend and I were at a gas station in Tempe southeast of Sky Harbor and I started crying when I saw the lights of a freight plane landing at the airport.

Two days later (September 15), Balbir Sodhi Singh was murdered at his gas station a few miles away from where I’m sitting, part of a rampage by a fucked up guy wanting to kill “turbanheads.” en.wikipedia.org

I was a sophomore in college, asleep in my apartment, when the towers fell. My phone rang, it woke me up, I let it go to my answering machine (yeah, I had a land line, digital answering machine, cordless phone, the works). It was my neighbor and occasional snowboard buddy John from St. Louis. “Charlie. Wake up. Turn on your TV. We’re going to war. The World Trade Center is gone and the Pentagon’s being attacked.” It was like 8:30 a.m. MDT.

Later that day I took an American flag I had and held it unfurled in front of me upside down and marched up and down the quad. I took some shit from a few people, only because they didn’t know what it meant. Someone took a picture. It ended up on the front page of the student paper on campus (Western State College, now Western Colorado University in Gunnison, CO). I still have that paper somewhere, I think, I hope.

I was in DC at the time at a large conference. It took about fifteen minutes to go from full conference room discussions on clinical trial results to conference shutdown.

I couldn’t stand being shut up in the hotel room and phones were down so I decided to walk the three miles to the National Cathedral. Very eerie and quiet with no traffic or people on the streets with the exception of a couple of escorted motorcades going to or from embassies. Couldn’t get into the Cathedral when I got there as it was in lockdown. I noticed a priest struggling to set up kneelers for an outdoor service and asked if he needed help. Those things must have weighed a couple hundred pounds and that workout was exactly what I needed at the time.

Just slid the teriyake salmon & shiitakes into the oven. I added a bunch of broccoli florets to the pouch (I used foil insteaof the usual parchment because there was so much with the broccoli added).

September 11th 2001: After getting the kids (then 7 and 11 years old) off to school before 7:30, I had crawled into bed to try to catch a couple more hours of sleep.

Shortly after the second plane hits, my phone rings and it’s my brother in Radford (Virginia). IIRC, he had walked over to his girlfriend’s apartment after getting off work on the graveyard shift at the 7-Eleven at nine. He told me to turn on my TV.

Living down in an Appalachian holler, I could only pick up the local PBS affiliate clearly, and PBS stayed with their normal schedule of kids and educational programming during the day. I could pick up our local ABC affiliate, but reception was very snowy and barely watchable.

So, my brother spent the first part of the day relaying information to me that he was getting from CNN via his girlfriend’s cable. I tried tuning in the local NPR station on the radio. They were still running normal programming, as were the local commercial music stations. In Southern West Virginia, local radio stations were very slow in switching over to their respective network news feeds. I don’t think WV Public Radio switched over to Don Edwards over the national NPR feed until sometime after the Pentagon was attacked. My brother signed off from his girlfriend’s apartment to hear back over to his apartment, leaving me with a staticky Peter Jennings.

About a half-hour after hanging up, my brother calls me back. *HIS* cable has gone out. So, I spend the next few hours relaying what I’m hearing from ABC feeling like a looking-glass version of NBC’s Frank McGee relaying what he’s hearing over the telephone from Robert McNeil from Dallas in November 1963.

My brother’s reaction after the Pentagon was hit: “This is war.”
My reaction at the end of the day: Shock, mourning, and fear about exactly to what dark places our rage would take us as a society, what cruel impulses we would give into and justify, fears that over the last 20 years have proven to be well-founded.

And, yes, by late 2002 and early 2003, I couldn’t withstand the propaganda from the right-wing warbloggers anymore and surrendered to the darkness.

Unruly passengers who refuse to wear a face mask on a plane will face a doubling of the fine, according to the latest executive order from President Joe Biden.

The order came under Biden’s COVID-19 action plan, which was released on Thursday, when he directed the Transportation Security Administration to “double fines for those who are not in compliance.”

The face mask fine increase applies to airports and “on certain modes of public transportation, including on many airplanes, trains, maritime vessels, and intercity bus services,” the White House said.

The increased fine is in effect through Jan. 18, 2022, and is part of an effort to “help slow and contain the spread of the virus.”

According to the TSA, starting on Friday, the new fines for violating face mask mandates for first offenders are $500 to $1,000 and $1,000 to $3,000 for second offenders.

I never want to get to the point where I wish someone dead. It’s psychologically and morally corrosive. I fight that sentiment and want the last word to go to God, who will — I believe — hold the anti-vaxxers responsible for many deaths.

Like my friends, I now reserve my sympathies for the innocent kids infected by politically belligerent teachers and parents. For those whose work requires being in offices or groups. And for those around the globe who want but can’t get vaccines, true victims of our medical shortsightedness.

But when asked to sympathize with the deathbed regrets of any politician, internet influencer or a rabid right-wing radio host who used anti-mask politics and COVID conspiracies to gain followers, sorry, I got nothing.

Our shop at Ft Rucker is a Pentagon Field Operating Agency—a branch office. We were at work in the morning when our Operations Br alerted us to the first hit. My guess was a traffic or tourist aircraft accident. We had the big screen TV up by the second hit. Our section was half civilian/half mid-career helicopter pilots. We knew we were going to war, just not where.

Before the Pentagon hit, our DC liaison (dislocated to Crystal City by construction) was on the phone. They described the Pentagon crash that killed LTG Maude and his people.

I’m reasonably confident of them pulling it off after the first season which was far and away the best first season of any Trek even with it’s own oddities - slight let down on the ending but aced it with things like the Riker home, Jean Luc with the fake accent and most of all with Data’s death. It could stink but if any of them can make a time travel and Q story work it is this gang.

But I am really antsy to see Star Trek: Prodigy especially after the new trailer.

I really wish I could just mourn.

But all I can think about is how these people died and immediately their loss was co-opted by men with malefic intentions, who’ve permanently dyed 9/11, but patriotism more generally, in their colors. Rather than genuinely express a loss, the country was told what to feel, how to feel…and most sinisterly, what thoughts and feelings would be punished.

If I put in some effort, I could name and put a biography to everyone that died in the Towers, and died in the rescue efforts around the Towers.

…but I can’t do that for the people killed in their names. Did we avenge ourselves a hundred times over, or a thousand times over?

Americans died and those individuals were immediately abstracted into blob of nationalist sentiment. And if you questioned any of where this was going, that blood—disproportionate blood—was necessary, you were pushed outside of the body politic, made not-American. We came together organically to be sad for a brief moment, but the demands for unity became demands for compliance that escalated and escalated. Civil liberties went away for all of us, American Muslims and people that could be mistaken for Muslim were not allowed to belong to the nation or mourn with the rest of us. In the long term, the need to further sort the country into the loyal and disloyal, the normative and the deviant, would become things like the Patriot Act and police militarization.

Toby Keith wrote the American Horst Wessel Lieder and nobody blinked.

For twenty years there has been no time to be sad for people as people because I’ve been prompted to feel a certain way that gives the powerful what they want…and that worked, I spent years not talking to anyone about the frustration or skepticism I felt, the fear that these wars were bad ideas tactically and morally indefensible.

I still don’t know how to mourn, because the quantity of what I’m mourning is so great that there’s no beginning point.

The few months before the attack were a nightmare for me: my father, my best friend, and then my husband all died from cancer. I was mourning them and in a perpetual state of despair when 9/11 happened. That’s was my first thought. I couldn’t wrap my head around a pilot flying into a building. I mean, they’d usually rather drop the plane into water rather than hit something. My mind just couldn’t make the connection it this was deliberate.

Luckily, I had ridden my bike that day, so the log jam that was DC traffic didn’t affect me at all. Got home in the 30 minutes it jam took me, riding part all the stupid cars on 13th street. We had a bunch of people traveling that had to find innovative ways home. The Fed. Gov. isn’t so good at quickly switching travel plans on short notice.

The weirdest thing to me for the next few days was nothing flying.

We were on our farm getting ready to head out for chores when our farm help (who were and still are part of the family) called to say turn on the TV, a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

My thought was that the real pilot was suicidal, that it was a smaller plane, like everyone else. We had a tv but no antenna, just used it to watch videotapes. When the men arrived, they managed a wire out the window that got a snow filled screen of the two towers, and we were watching when the second plane hit. We did get the animals fed, but we spent a lot of time watching and listening and wondering.

I first heard the reports of the WTC attacks driving down 11th Avenue in Manhattan (I had had to come back to the City to turn my leased car back to the dealer, I never figured that date of 9/11/01 was going to be memorable): most of the initial commentary on the radio seemed to assume the incident was either another private-plans incident as had happened on the East Side in (?) 1998: or else an accident like the collision of a bomber with the Empire State Building in (?1945?) . By the time I got to the dealer, the people there were glued to the TV, and the truth was getting slowly known…..

When the 9/11 attacks happened, I was asleep on the other side of the planet, in my tiny cabin in the crew area of a cruise ship. It was a great gig. I played piano in the ship’s band. We were sailing 10 day cruises out of Papeete, Tahiti. Stops at Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, and Bora Bora. I had been there about 6 months.

My roommate woke me to say that the World Trade Centers had fallen down. I was too much in sleep mode to understand. Later, I got up and found out what had happened, although it wasn’t totally clear what that was.

A few days later, in the middle of the afternoon while we were en route to Bora Bora, we abruptly turned around. There was an announcement on the PA system, telling pax and crew alike that the cruise line had gone bankrupt, and that we were returning to our home port immediately. The cruise line, I found out later, was overextended on loans, and with all air travel shut down, they could not come up with the cash for refunds and expenses. If there had been a next cruise, the ship would have been empty. Supposedly, there had been a meeting previously scheduled with big money backers… set for Sept 12.

The person making the announcement had the good foresight to add, “If any passengers are upset by this news, please be kind to staff and crew. Please realize, we all just lost our jobs.”

On the way back to Tahiti, we put on a quickly thrown together show for the passengers. I did a quick arrangement of God Bless America. Then we docked in a cargo terminal, instead of our usual middle-of-town berth. It was about 2 weeks before my agency found a flight to get me home. I was lucky. I had friends on other ships that spent weeks sailing in circles until things were decided.

So, while my loss was tiny in comparison to others, I was still affected. There were attacks in NYC and Washington DC, and I lost my job quite literally on the other side of the planet.

It was a really surreal day for us. My husband was in Texas at the airport trying to get home(for some reason I keep thinking it was Houston but he was in Dallas). He and a few co workers ended up renting a van and driving back starting that afternoon. Our son was at school and came home early on the bus. The school district sent out a mass call to ask us not to come to school and let us know everyone was safe. Of course that didn’t stop people, but none of the younger kids even knew what was happening til after they left school. By design so no one was scared. There was no school the next day, but counselors were at the school if anyone wanted to see someone.

I remember how nice people were for awhile after. Yes there were racist asshats in the immediate aftermath, but most people embraced the minorities they knew, we were all scared and worried and tried to comfort each other. We asked each other if we were doing ok, more phone calls, kinder interactions in stores and restaurants, more getting together for lunches and doing stuff, etc. But it didn’t last.

I was so glad when all three of us were home and safe and we heard from family by late that evening. My SIL worked about half a mile from the Pentagon, so we were all scared til we heard from her. My BIL(who died early this year from opiate related health issues) worked as a delivery driver and was headed back towards DC when the Pentagon was hit. We were lucky. What 9/11 did do was make it harder to belong, harder to be different, harder to feel welcome. In some places at least. It’s like the cliques became even more impenetrable. And I mean the adults here, not kids. Maybe it’s a southern thing, something about this place, but it’s what happened here and it’s become worse once it was unleashed and not really confronted.

The lava is indeed pooling northwest of the cone, which is the north end of Geldingadalir. Then the lava is flowing south. Sputtering all the while because of weeks of rain making pools of water.

That would be a core breach in that case. But aren’t there failsafes upon failsafes stacked on top of each other to prevent a reactor being taken so far outside the SOAR that it breaches?

And one would imagine that if there were some danger of any serious “incident” with nuke plants - either occurred or pending - the relevant authorities might be taking somewhat more forceful plans than just rolling out a distribution plan for potassium-iodide pills, with (apparently) little urgency….

I haven’t heard anything and am not familiar with the design of the plants. But a release of radioactive steam strikes me as one possibility.

Or the feds nabbed some idiots, believe they got them all, but are doing CYA just in case…

By the way, none of these critters are little. Adult Hyenas weigh 100-150lbs and up.
