Navajo Baby’s First Laugh Ceremony

I learned of Ashii Asdzan- Salt Woman, during my niece’s A’wee Chi’deedloh- the Baby’s First Laugh Ceremony. In Navajo we celebrate a baby’s first laugh, we believe babies before they laugh are part of the Holy Peoples’ world and haven’t fully settled in with the Earth Peoples’ world. It’s when they laugh they are telling us they are ready to join the community of the Earth People. It is also believed that a child assumes the qualities of the person who witnesses, or coaxes, her/his first giggle and is the person to host the baby’s First Laugh Ceremony. In celebration of the baby joining the Earth People, the community gathers in prayer and in receiving salt crystals from the baby’s right hand at the ceremony. Placed on the food or tongue, the salt is meant to rejuvenate the good character in each recipient and serve as the first in a lifetime of generous acts by the child. This exchange is a teaching taught by Ashii Asdzaan-Salt Women who came from the salt mines of the Grand Canyon. Source

Craighead told investigators he only planned use the long knives for defensive purposes, according to notes of his voluntary interview.
DC Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nolan ordered Craighead to stay in jail until his next hearing. Craighead, a bald White man, was handcuffed and flanked by US Marshals, and was wearing camouflage pants.

Court documents unsealed Tuesday shed new light on Craighead’s extremist views. Police officers said in a sworn affidavit that he said to them, “Why are you all pulling me over when there are brown people hurting White people.” They also said he uttered anti-gay slurs about a prominent Hispanic author and that he blamed the LGBT community for the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Police said in court filings that they found a handwritten inscription on the car that said, “death to others, White power.”
He told investigators that he wasn’t a member of any extremist groups, according to court filings. But police said he was wearing a shirt affiliated with the “Boogaloo Boys” when he was arrested, a violent far-right movement known for anti-government views and for trying to instigate a racial war in the US.

well, ok, then…

re: #200 Belafon

I don’t know about you, but I have often had to accept help from people that I otherwise wouldn’t have anything else to do with.

As for the Lincoln Project, their members have stated more than once that their job is not to dictate the Democrats agenda, and they have resisted doing that when they would have had the opportunity. There have been no “If the Democrats would only do this” related to policy; it’s only been in how they think it would be better to do more direct attacks on Republicans.

I am definitely a “work with Stalin” guy. When we’re truly on the other side of this, we can evaluate what it means to be an ally. But we cannot win with only Democrats. And I’m not beyond a few thanks every now and then, and a few less “but you started this” especially with those that have apologized.

My point is that we’re never going to be on the other side of this.

The only leverage the “reasonable” conservatives have is their own monstrous creation.

Their ideas don’t work, their plans for the future don’t work. Their plan to defeat the current fascism is to continue doing the things that create fascists.

You keep imagining that I’m stating a preference that has to do with my virtues and my choice of affiliation, when what I am saying is that it makes no strategic sense because those allies want stupid counterproductive things that will make the war go on longer.

Teaming with Stalin meant millions of soldiers who…let’s get callous here…were put into a meat grinder by their leader because that’s what the Allies needed—meat to throw at the Nazis until the logistics were strained to failure. The price of teaming with Stalin was Eastern Europe becoming Soviet colonies…which—also callous—wasn’t really that bad a price all things considered, Western Europe had no need for those people because they got cheap labor and captive markets from their colonies.

Teaming with “moderate” conservatives doesn’t get us many voters, only gets us those voters under conditions that alienate other voters, and the “price” of those voters is to continue policies that make the world worse in ways that will create more instability and thus more reactionaries, but also further empower institutions and people that already have so much wealth they are effectively beyond the law. It’s not that people won’t be held to account for what they’ve done in past, it’s that they’re demanding a future where they can’t be held to account ever.

If you think this:

Then we’re done. We can just stop trying to argue. There will always need to be an effort to maintain a democracy, which Democrats have failed to do at times, but there’s a difference between that and struggling against people who are openly declaring that democracy has failed that we need to stop.

I don’t expect to win every battle, but I do think there’s an other side. But I also know it won’t happen if we exclude other people who are trying to get there.

I didn’t put in the effort to qualify the quoted sentence fragment with other words because that’s solely “what I believe.”

I am saying—accurately assess the what your allies’ intentions are by looking at what they’ve done in the past. Furthermore, consider what outcomes they’ve created through their own choices. Under those conditions, what is the utility of the alliance?

The ongoing trend is that the people claiming to speak for this bloc keep making demands that produce bad outcomes relative to the desired strategic objective. There is no synthesis possible with this position: the economic and social order they demand creates the problem we’re experiencing. We can’t solve the problem with more of the problem.

We can’t solve the fascist problem by enabling the people that enable the fascists, who are still trying to barter over the worth of them not enabling fascists. If the culture dictates that all motion left is unreasonable…which is the most widely-repeated truism in the discourse… that is why there’s no “other side” to this crisis.

When all this started out I was considerably more open to Never Trumpers…and on an individual basis I appreciate of the efforts of individuals who have engaged in self-reflection and conceded that we have reached this point because of specific, mounting issues. But now I’m seeing the people that lead the Never Trump discourse settle back into demanding compliance while refusing to acknowledge the continuity between Trump and what came before Trump.

They aren’t offering an alliance. Their position—that others have to assume their policy positions—undermines the claim that they genuinely want to stop the authoritarians and fascists. They have always leveraged social conservatives with undemocratic instincts against the rest of us, they’re just phrasing it different because now they don’t control those social conservative’s votes.

I’m done talking to you because…no, I will not place faith in people who have consistently operated in bad faith and shows signs of repeating their bad-faith practices. That is not pragmatic nor strategic, that is being trapped in a broken system as the party doing the appeasing in the hope that things won’t get worse.

And that never works.

I’m thinking he was discussing potentialities with his military counterparts in other countries because EVERYBODY was worried about the orange madman.
Did he actually say he would warn of imminent attacks or was it just a suggestion of a heads up about things going tits up?
Who knows what actually happened or if there is some kind of writer’s hyperbola going on.
I would suspect that Milley played this by the constitutional book, not the stark way the “Peril” book describes. Especially since he apparently discussed this in more detail with the folks under his command and who also had need to know in the military heirachy.

Maybe I’m being naive here but Trump never struck me as someone who would think that starting a nuclear war would be to his advantage. Bolton yes — but not Trump. He’s a bully and verbally belligerent but this doesn’t seem like a tactic he would adopt and force others to implement to stay in office. Doing a Grenada-like invasion, sure — but nothing that involved real commitment of forces or deadly weaponry. Pulling troops out of Afghanistan, as was alleged, seems up his alley — Removing forces from our allies, dismantling key defenses, definitely. But not a major attack on a key foe.

If the breach of chain of command is real, then a public court martial may make sense. I’d be rooting for an acquittal, of course, but getting the justification for acting behind Trump’s back on an official record would be worth it.

re: #74 Hecuba’s daughter

Trump is the kind of power-needy guy who says things that make everyone else around him nervous on purpose. So suddenly things have gone very wrong and you’re having to assess at what exact level of irony and fronting the president was at when he mentioned nuking stuff all those times.

And if you’re meta-cognitive about the whole thing, you may trying to anticipate whether even the man himself knows what he’s going to do, given how many times you’ve seen him flail at random.

Oops, posted this in the wrong thread…

The Washington Post has an article up on the expectations regarding Saturday RWNJ event:

D.C. officials think a demonstration planned for Saturday by far-right groups supporting the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 will prove to be a small gathering, attracting no more than a few hundred people.

But city leaders are worried that those who do attend may bring firearms illegally, setting up the potential for clashes in an area expected to be bustling on Saturday with crowds at multiple events: the annual H Street festival in Northeast that typically attracts thousands; a Howard University football game at Audi Field in Southwest; a baseball game at Nationals Park; and a Harry Styles concert at Capital One Arena downtown.

…snip…

Geldart said he and other D.C. public safety officials have been monitoring social media conversations relating to the far-right protest. “There are calls on some of the disparate sites for folks to come armed,” he said. D.C. regulations make it illegal for most nonresidents to carry guns in the city, a law that the mayoral staff members brought up in their conversations with H Street workers.

the only reason I would bring him up on charges or even military discipline, is because he admitted to breaking the law by usurping the chain of command. In this instance, we are either a nation of laws, or we are not. I have no issues with having that discussion, as we can speak to the nature of the TFG’s frame of mind and if his own administration should have removed him based on the 25th amendment (a reasonable suggestion, warranted even) but it would further expose more of the chickenshit lack of functioning of the TFG and Milley ends up falling on his sword for doing the right thing… well, I suspect he weighed that possibility when he spoke out. Based on how everything else is moving based on the TFG era of widespread corruption of norms, that means we can look forward to something happening circa 2024, unless the Military chooses to act independently of the DOJ.

Yes, as I understand it, after over 140 injuries, the failure to achieve their primary mission, and the subsequent replacement of the senior leadership, the Capitol Police are not likely to show much tolerance for provocateurs.

I don’t entirely disagree with you (and I even think a technical argument for treason is possible), but I can’t help remembering the several times during the Cold War when we avoided nuclear armageddon because lower-level Soviet officers refused to follow procedure or submit to coercion from more senior officers.

By the way, this was generally how combat organizational failures in US Army were generally handled in the European Theater during World War 2.

The unit got ‘bloodied’. (With lots of their compatriots were killed or injured, the surviving soldiers began to realize that if they didn’t treat this seriously they could also get killed.)

Senior leadership was replaced. (To add confidence to the subordinates that things were being taken seriously. And also the leadership was often in a state of shock.)

Usually the organization performance improved after that. And many of the relieved officers were put back into other units after a cooling down period.

Lincoln freed the slaves in Washington DC in1862 and compensated the slaveowners with $300 for each slave; but his motivation was apparently to keep the slaveowners loyal to the Republic. In any case, this was never implemented elsewhere.

Larry Elder seems akin to Clarence Thomas and Alan Keyes and perhaps the Samuel L. Jackson character in Django Unchained. His loyalty to the current version of the party is likely due to the fact that he gets far more publicity this way.

Speaking of black Republicans, whatever happened to the legislation that Tim Scott was trying to craft in response to the Floyd murder?

And it would not even be breaking the chain of command, unless he had been prior ordered to not talk with his counterpart.

Military officers of different nations often communicate with each other. And yes, during the cold war there would be prearranged meetings between US and USSR military personnel, just so they could get to know each other.

Don’t believe a word that Trump utters.

You may well be right. I didn’t bother to look up the definition in the Federal code. I was just thinking that it could be construed as giving aid and comfort to an enemy, as defined in the Constitution.

I listened to part of the Cesca podcast because I wanted to hear him talk about his ocular migraine. I had one in April 2020 and broke strict quarantine so fast to get it checked out at an ophthalmologist because I was terrified it was a detached retina. Nope, just an ocular migraine. And not even a very severe one. Just enough to make me freak out.

Trump Lashes Out at George W. Bush

Former president Donald Trump lashed out Monday at former president George W. Bush, saying his fellow Republican had ‘a failed and uninspiring presidency’ and shouldn’t be ‘lecturing’ Americans about the threat posed by domestic terrorism,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “So interesting to watch former President Bush, who is responsible for getting us into the quicksand of the Middle East (and then not winning!), as he lectures us that terrorists on the ‘right’ are a bigger problem than those from foreign countries that hate America, and that are pouring into our Country right now.”

He added: “If that is so, why was he willing to spend trillions of dollars and be responsible for the death of perhaps millions of people? He shouldn’t be lecturing us about anything. The World Trade Center came down during his watch. Bush led a failed and uninspiring presidency. He shouldn’t be lecturing anybody

Having read up on the issue, over/under on the same plaintiffs being in court when they have become infected and they don’t get offered certain treatments to deal with the infection, wanting the court to order the said treatments? Making either the present or earlier statements to the court problematic?
