In Stephen’s Tuesday night monologue he looks at revelations from Bob Woodward’s new book, which alleges that China and the Pentagon each had serious concerns about the former president’s access to nuclear weapons, and he checks on friend of the show Nicki Minaj after her comments about vaccines set off a social media firestorm. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

re: #308 Teukka

That last paragraph… [tinfoil]
What if they believe that if they get the ‘rona, they’ll make it, and support anti-mask, anti-vaccine, anti-social distancing, anti-hand hygiene, etc. to be able to spread it so it can take out whoever they regard as Untermensch? 🤔
[/tinfoil]

For most it’s not that direct, it’s more that their dictum is Margaret Thatcher’s old chestnut about how their is no society, only individuals. This position is then filtered through a bunch of different perspectives that all emphasize that sickness is a kind of choice, and suffering from sickness is a kind of judgement, and thus illness is a functional of personal responsibility. So being well is a sign virtue/savviness/vague superiority, and those that get sick should not be empathized with, nor should money be spent to prevent people from getting sick.

It’s the individualism of fools, where you have to add meritocratic qualia and hierarchical distinctions to neutral experiences for self-validation. You can see this beyond wingnuts: it’s part of how capitalism sells health as a product, and part of how supplement pushers and quacks push medicine by assigning it qualia that are less about actual effect and more about consuming your identity. You are not buying a pill, you are buying how the pill makes you feel, but your milieu blurs the line between the two.

Hence the recurring “I didn’t think this would happen to me, this is what happens to other people” tableau that plays out.

But this dovetails with the base assumption that hierarchy is inherently good to create sentiments that edge closer and closer to Social Darwinism: there are lesser kinds of people that will get sick, and it is wrong to care about them getting sick. “They died, let us not linger on why they died because it’s not important” isn’t just an American thing—it’s how you have an empire that starves Indians to make sure the British have enough cotton—but Americans have their own landrace varieties. NIMBYism often creates a dilemma in which a kind of person cannot be helped but also cannot violate societal rules to ensure their own survival…leaving only the choice to cease being in society by either dying or fleeing. The way that everything is monetized in the US, but money is seen as an indicator of virtue, produces a particular kind of NIMBY thinking where the person simply has to die because the alternative is to give them unearned resources.

We are seeing a lot of “I am not supposed to care about people that aren’t as good as me” playing out in the pandemic: it is not the holders of this position want people to die, they just want their deaths to communicate nothing about the values of the society and to have no ethical implications, (for there are kinds of people that death happens to, passive voice, and thus need not be remarked). Compassion is stressful; critical thinking provides unpleasant feedback about the stability of the comfort provided by the status quo.

If your paramount value is your own comfort, you can construct a worldview in which bad things that happen to other people do not signify that bad things could happen to you. If you’re particularly invested in self-gratification, you can choose to view the suffering of others as a form of victory.

So last week, I ordered a Ring security camera and a solar panel to keep it charged (rather than plugging it in). The camera arrived, but the mounting kit and solar panel did not. After the deadline had passed, the Amazon representative said it was “lost in transit” and helped me organize a new delivery. The mounting kit arrived today, and I think I see the problem with the previous order: The Amazon delivery woman rocked up in a Hertz rental van. I suspect that their Amazon van may have been in an unfortunate accident.

The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 15, 2021 • 10:47:50am

re: #13 The Ghost of a Flea

If your paramount value is your own comfort, you can construct a worldview in which bad things that happen to other people do not signify that bad things could happen to you. If you’re particularly invested in self-gratification, you can choose to view the suffering of others as a form of victory.

This is the thing that informs conservatism—which started as a defense of monarchy but expanded its definition of hierarchy over time—but is absolutely essential to the kind of fascism we’ve got bubbling right now. There’s a pyramid of kinds of people, and it’s right and good to have an entirely inverted moral system when dealing with one’s inferiors, because that is the most important proof of one’s own specialness and importance.

That isn’t eugenics because you’re not trying to trim away “negative traits” to smooth out the function of society. Rather, it’s just a caste system: there will always be a distinction, that distinction will always produce worse outcomes for designated inferiors, and it is not the job of the superior to improve those conditions. Periodically this will slide into eliminationism, but that’s just an extreme variation of the day to day reinforcement of arbitrary abuse of power.

In this framework the greatest misdeed is to suggest that the high and the low are of a common substance and suffer, as individuals, in identical ways.

The rhetoric of conservative mouthpieces about COVID is not about the virus, it’s about maintaining the conceit that the Right Kind of People (their kind) are not experiencing the same kind of arbitrary suffering as the Wrong Kind of People and it is immoral and incorrect to identify the commonality…

…which is why they engage is the same kind of self-contradiction on everything. The power dynamic supercedes and informs all morality.

what is sad is that Milley had to go to such lengths to protect the world, if not the country because the GOP and the 45 Administration wouldn’t do what was obvious to everyone else that the man was unfit for any government position much less the President. If Milley broke any laws, I’m sure he weighed that against what he felt was in the actual best interests of the country in accounting for the possibility of being fired for not following what he felt would be illegal orders and Trump just whistling up a different toady to carry out his desires.

Why You Shouldn’t Trust the FLCCC Protocol and Other COVID Self-Treatment Plans
[…]
“What’s most shocking to me is that the FLCCC protocol, which is being passed around as a PDF, does not include any kind of pregnancy warning on its instructions for using these drugs. Several other drugs in the protocol have a note about pregnancy: There’s a note that the iodine nasal spray should only be used for five days if the patient is pregnant, a footnote that the safety of Ivermectin in pregnancy has not been established, and a note recommending pregnancy as one of the risk factors to use when deciding whether to use antibody therapy.”

That way lies madness. And yes, the more info that comes out (pace Woodward’s “scoop’), the more it is obvious that Gen. Milley was not acting “on his own”, and followed the appropriate protocols. All the right wingers are claiming Milley was out of turn, engaging in treason by overstepping command authority, when it was clear that Esper also thought the same thing, and Milley was acting in accordance with Sec. Def. Esper.

Everyone around Trump know he was going to burn everything down, or threaten to do so when he lost (and he did).

That’s the problem. Everyone knew, and far too many decided to save their information for the tell all books, instead of yelling to every reporter in earshot that Trump is a deranged lunatic who should be removed from office and is a clear and present danger to the nation.

They all failed on this spectacularly, and the GOP decided to back the deranged lunatic.

They all failed on this spectacularly, and the GOP decided to back the deranged lunatic.

yeah we’re learning that org charts and general moral principles don’t actually mix very well

I saw Little Richard once. He actually closed the Atlantic City Pop Festival in 1969 and absolutely killed it. His horn section was not of this earth. Grand piano, full length fur coat and in fine voice.
He played Bony Moronie like 4 times in a row and the crowd went nuts.

The idea of Pat Boone recording “Long Tall Sally ” is too funny.

Long Tall Sally from Ann’s Tick Tok “restaurant ” in Macon GA in the 1950s.

And Long Tall Sally was probably trans.

And in defense of Little Richard (his road manager was a close friend), Little Richard was non-sexual, he just liked to watch.

I can’t remember who told the story—I think one of the Beatles—about going up to Little Richard’s apartment or hotel room and finding a book on the coffee table that was just close-up shots of vaginas.

Conservatism is the view that there must be an in-group the laws protect but don’t bind, and out-groups the laws bind but don’t protect.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible, its supporters have generated a mountain of apologia for it, all of which, without exception, is axiomatically dishonest.

The market for such apologia is steadily decreasing in this age of tl;dr, the tedious attempted justifications being replaced by naked power grabs and use of force.

A “moderate” Republican will eventually knife you in the back in order maintain bona fides with the main corps of lunatics. Just a matter of “when”, not “if”.

Yes but with provisos?

Conservatism hacks culture, which means there’s a lot of people that live inside that milieu unwittingly. And those people tend to be…screwed but also screwing the rest of us over. Self-aware conservatives that truly hustle within the hierarchy ride herd over people who’ve just been trapped inside a set of blinders. Conservatism obsesses over family structure and patriarchial authority because that’s the best culture hack: from childhood you learn to not question and to associate intimacy and ideology.

[This order is the best things can be, it proposes. And when the appetites of those with power demand something new that should be wrong, the proposition—endure, this is still the best things can be—holds. Hence the nonces and sadists.]

It’s like an actual cult as opposed to a stereotypical cult…because cults aren’t actually abnormalities, they’re modern variations on how societies create boundaries and hierarchies. There are the people that have license to dictate terms to the rest, the people in good faith invested in obedience, the people in bad faith invested in exploitation, and the people that accept the notion that they must given deference and obedience…and all those categories overlap such that there are oppressors that are also oppressed.

And it sucks being on the outside of that cult and seeing people that aren’t truly invested being flensed—stripped down to enforcers of a despicable discipline or used and discarded—while you don’t have the power to unravel all of the emotion and culture that makes them participate.

Why don’t they spray children with DDT anymore?

Because someone questioned the science.

It was allowed back then.

Probably another scientist.

Science progresses.

DDT is generally harmless against humans, it is only dangerous to most higher animals in high concentrations.

It was legal and necessary back then to dampen the spread of parasites.

The mounting kit arrived today, and I think I see the problem with the previous order: The Amazon delivery woman rocked up in a Hertz rental van. I suspect that their Amazon van may have been in an unfortunate accident.

this must be happening a lot to amazon lately. I’ve had them lose a couple of things over a couple of months, and that never used to happen.

God, Marisa Tomei is gold. Never made a bad movie.

I remember, after Vinny, how she was described, like Sean Young and Deborah Winger, of being hard to manage and deal with on set, and I wonder how much of those comments were because of Harvey Weinstein.

It was legal and necessary back then to dampen the spread of parasites.

Why are there so many Trump staff memoirs? The authors need to whitewash their reputations

Every time a memoir by a former Trump staffer is announced it is marketed with words such as “bombshell”, “tell-all” and “scandal”. So far, however, none of these books have told us much we didn’t already know.

and

you know what secret I wish Grisham would reveal? How on earth she has managed to fail upwards so spectacularly throughout her career. Grisham, it has been reported, managed to lose a private-sector job after being accused of filing false expense claims, and then lost another job after being accused of plagiarism. She has also been arrested for driving under the influence. All those things would have been a career impediment to most people, but they didn’t stop her from landing one of the most prestigious gigs in politics. She did a terrible job at that, but has still managed to get a (presumably lucrative) book deal. Truly, it’s a charmed and baffling career trajectory.

Depending on whether Milley was working in concert with Esper, there’s some benefit of the doubt to be given to Milley. I suspect this was more along the lines of reminding those involved in the chain of command the duty to refuse illegal orders (which a unilateral nuclear strike without a declaration of war would absolutely be). If that’s the case, then this is much ado about nothing. But if it is more than that, it’s problematic.

Of course, the most problematic part of this is the failure of the civilian/political class to do anything. And it should also be a reminder that the electoral college needs to go - preventing someone like Trump was the alleged purpose, we have eliminated that purpose and now it’s time to eliminate the electoral college

State Secrets that Aren’t Secret

Next month, the Justice Department will argue to the Supreme Court that the “state secrets privilege” requires concealment of evidence about the CIA’s torture of a prisoner named Abu Zubaydah, evidence that has been public for over a decade.

but this part stands out just because

Mitchell was not an interrogator. He and his fellow contractor and future business partner, Bruce Jessen, were psychologists who had worked as instructors with the U.S. Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape school, which trained U.S. military personnel to resist coercive interrogations that they might face in enemy hands. Mitchell and Jessen believed that they could use more brutal forms of the techniques used at the school to induce a state of “learned helplessness” in CIA prisoners, leaving them unable to resist telling interrogators everything they knew. The CIA’s counterterrorism center concurred. Mitchell and Jessen’s company would eventually receive over $81 million for their central role in operating what the CIA euphemistically called its “enhanced interrogation” program.

In mid-April 2002, Mitchell began using “enhanced” techniques on Zubaydah, including nudity and sleep deprivation. Soufan objected, both to his FBI superiors and to Mitchell, and left Thailand with his supervisors’ approval. Eventually Gaudin left too, and the FBI ordered him not to return.

Mitchell made a list of 12 brutal interrogation techniques he proposed to use on Zubaydah. They included not only sleep deprivation but also physical blows; slamming a prisoner into a wall; stress positions; “cramped confinement” in coffin-sized or smaller boxes; the use of diapers; the use of insects; waterboarding; and mock burial. He also suggested that the CIA hire Jessen.

The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, which is supposed to provide guidance to agencies on whether their proposed actions are legal, formally approved all of the techniques other than mock burial. The CIA then authorized Mitchell and Jessen to begin using them on Zubaydah. Starting on August 4, 2002, they tortured him for almost 24 hours a day for several weeks.

Torture is quackery: there was no reason to think this would work, no reason to pay $81 million to keep it going, and very little that was actionable was produced.

But as I said above about pseudo-science and pseudo-intellectualism, torture isn’t really about finding an answer that is true, it’s about finding the answer that you’re already seeking. If you have to have the answer you want, you can’t operate in good faith…you have to destroy the process of determining truth to force the outcome.

We didn’t do these things to create a better outcome, we did these things because they satisfied a pre-existing need to believe that cruelty would produce better outcomes because the subject deserved cruelty. The actual torturers were simply playing with a body they could inflict their theories on, but were being given so much money that…what were their incentives to admit failure?

Repeated exposure builds greater immunity. It’ll be one massive dose from an unvaccinated Delta factory that will do it. If you pack your respiratory system with virus it’s going to do some damage before the immune response kicks in.

I see this has not been a learning experience.

People get mad when corrected, and they get stupid. It’s one of our defects. We are not rational animals. She’s rationalizing herself to a place where she feels like a good person who’s being attacked by bad people, and those gyrations did not put her in a good place.

I sure hope he doesn’t. Beto doesn’t stand a chance in hell after he said he would take away your AR-15.

Wish he would have targeted Abbott right after his Cruz loss rather than flaming out on a Quixotist POTUS run.

This Texas democrat has waited patiently for years and years for the state party to get their stuff together, it has cost me a lot of money on wasted donations. No Beto, he is a non-starter. I’d rather vote for Matthew McConaughey and I hate Matthew McConaughey

That news is going to cause a lot of fallout, in the non-radioactive sense. Basically the Australians can’t build nuclear hunter/killer subs from scratch in any realistic timescale, however to get the sale through the Aussie government will want most of the construction done in local shipyards i.e. localisation.

The original replacement for the ageing Australian Collins-class subs was going to be a non-nuclear version of a French nuclear hunter-killer sub called the Shortfin Barracuda. It was a technical abortion to start with, very expensive and the localisation process wasn’t going well even after the contract was signed over five years ago. This collaboration sounds like the Australians will get to build the hull based on a British Astute or American Virginia design with the reactors and other sparkly bits coming from the nation that provides the hull blueprints. Training and operations workups will initially come from the US and UK, possibly on a Lend-Lease basis where the Aussies rent some existing nuclear boats and senior crew while their own-build hulls are under construction and being fitted out.

Expect the local Aussie population to go ballistic, in the non-radioactive sense, over this. A number of other nations in the area, like New Zealand are even more opposed to nuclear-powered naval ships operating in the area.

The MN GOP is a bunch of toothless hacks. They have little real power here. Still, it’s amazing that they are putting on the performative bullshit on a scale comparable to any of the Southern states.

I guess they will have to choose how or if to oppose the nine dash line policy China has. It takes a lot of conventional subs to cover for nukes that can stay out.

Snopes has an entry on the missing panic button. It may have been a clerical error.

In fact, an unidentified Democratic aide to the House Administration Committee, which oversees security at the Capitol, told a Washington Post columnist in February the buttons may have been missing because of a clerical error — not because of a conspiracy to harm Pressley because of her political agenda.

“A preliminary investigation suggests that Pressley’s office was inadvertently placed on the Architect of the Capitol move list, and a vendor wrongly removed their duress buttons through a clerical screw-up,” the aide said in an email to the columnist, Greg Sargent.

He wrote in a column that published Feb. 8:

The aide added that ‘it is likely relevant’ that Pressley took over the office of former congresswoman Katie Hill (D-Calif.) in an office swap at the beginning of the last Congress. Hill subsequently resigned amid an ethics investigation, which may have erroneously placed that office (despite its having been traded to Pressley) on a list to be emptied out at the end of the last Congress.

That might have resulted in the removal of the duress buttons, the aide says. […]

Still, the aide cautioned that an internal Capitol Police investigation into the matter “remains ongoing.”
