Road Trip 2021: Plague Survival
Left town Monday with my wife and our two adult kids to visit family in Billings, MT, Spokane, WA and Portland, OR. Stopped in Jackson, WY this afternoon and my wife and I walked into a line at the hotel reservation desk. We were the only people masked (wife w/ cloth mask, me w/ 3M N95 particle mask) until a guy got in line behind us and thanked us for being masked. He had forgotten his and was hoping the hotel had some on hand (they did). Hearing this, the people in front of us also thanked us and said that they had forgotten to put their masks on (which they then did).
We basically shamed six people into masking up with the help of that guy who thanked us…lol!
Wiped down room contents with 99% isopropyl (brought two quarts) to decontaminate things. One big reason is that two of the people we are visiting are my wife’s 96 & 97 year old uncles and we want to have a safe visit with them. Everyone on our trip is vaccinated so it’s just a matter of evading crazy, anti-vax/anti-mask zombies.
Interesting note: Idaho Falls has “HIRING” on many of their restaurant signs but only one had a starting wage: $11/Hr. No wonder they aren’t getting workers, $11 an hour isn’t even ass-wiping money and they are risking their lives to earn it in that town.

The only narrative the media is interested in pushing is the one I mentioned yesterday: “He got lucky.” The narrative they want to tell is that Newsom was recalled for good reasons, that the CA GQP called forth a referendum on his governorship, and in a fair race he would have lost on the merits. But then Larry Elder entered the race, he gave Newsom a boogeyman to run against rather than running on his record, and he won because people didn’t want the “scary black man” as their governor. So that the recall ends up being a net loss for CA Dems because the recall happened at all and Newsom wasn’t really tested on his record but on being better than the alternative.
Yeah, it’s a narrative that is totally at odds with reality and basically argues that the CA GQP had a valid case against Newsom and his administration, but it also allows the media to avoid admitting they spent weeks pumping up yet another Trump-favored candidate only to watch them get blown out of the water. Look for a similar narrative to play out here in VA in two months when Terry wins another term against the Trump-endorsed Youngkin.

Wife and I are half-way through the 10-14 day initial isolation, and still fairly symptomatic. As well as I can determine, people in ICUs for weeks are treated as still infectious. As we approach the magic 14 days, wife and I are trying to get a better answer on re-surfacing. We are about to survey several of our scheduled doctors/dentist to see when they would feel comfortable going nose-to-nose with us. Our ophthalmologist is a genius and a secular saint, and I don’t want to be the one to kill him.
No one from the local med or public health community seems to have heard of contact tracing or patient education.

Pope Francis today seemed to tell American Catholic leaders who want to ban Joe Biden from taking communion that they might want to cool their jets,or at least stop blowing so hard on their incense burners. Francis didn’t directly take a position on whether Biden should be denied the sacrament because of his filthy pro-choice views, but he did suggest it’s not bishops’ job to be mixing up politics with their pastoral duties.
While flying back to Rome from a visit to Bratislava, Slovakia, the Vatican correspondent from the US Jesuit magazine America asked Francis about the controversy over whether pro-choice political leaders should be allowed to eat Christ incarnate in the holy host and wine. Since Biden’s election, conservative Catholics have called, sometimes very publicly, for that to be a transubstantial issue in the Church.
Francis said that well of course abortion is “homicide,” because no, he’s never going to change on that, but also said bishops shouldn’t be doing churchy stuff with politics in mind:
“If we look at the history of the church, we can see that every time the bishops did not act like shepherds when dealing with a problem, they aligned themselves with political life, on political problems,” he said.

And compared to the big wave, this wave has not pushed the ICU capacity. The county still have many ICU beds available.

Mainstream media continues to underestimate Trump’s threat. House Rep. Jody Hice from Georgia voted to overturn Biden’s Electoral College victory and because there were no real consequences for sedition, he’s running against Georgia’s current Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger with Trump’s full support.
Last week, Trump backed Kristina Karamo for Michigan Secretary of State. She insists Trump won Michigan, which he lost by more than 150,000 votes, and has appeared at Big Lie rallies with My Pillow CEO and local crackpot Mike Lindell.

I am feeling pessimistic: right now, the GOP is positioning states to be able to simply ignore any election results they don’t like and throw the Presidential vote to the individual states where they are guaranteed a majority regardless of how many votes are cast and where.

Children run a significantly lower risk of severe Covid-19 than adults. But there are examples of children who have become seriously ill. It has mainly concerned the condition MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) which means hyperinflammation with high fever and in some cases an effect on one or more organs in the body.
So far during the pandemic, more than 250 children under the age of 18 in Sweden have suffered from MIS-C.
According to the Public Health Agency, the vaccines currently approved from the age of 12 are safe and effective. To date, nearly 20 million children worldwide have received one of the vaccines. In the vast majority of cases, side effects are mild and transient. A few children have experienced side effects in the form of myocarditis, which is usually transient. However, you need to be aware of the risk and seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as chest pain in the days following the vaccination, according to the Public Health Agency.

PPHD director Kim Engel reported that the case rate continues to increase, with 542 cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days compared to 476 cases per 100,000 people last week. In a hearing yesterday in the Unicameral to decide whether to expend exorbitant amounts of money to build a new state penitentiary to relieve overcrowding, State Senator Adam Morfeld live-tweeted brief statements from each person appearing before the committee (corrections officers, management, &c).
Each one insisted that the money would be better spent on mental health care and diversion programmes, along with additional staff (some noted that control stations frequently go unmanned, or people work longer than twenty-four hours in a single shift).
That means the GOP is going to ignore them all and build another prison.

Dominion’s solution? Insist the town is mostly white, so they can’t be racists.

Kloosterboer and Alaska Reefer say they comply with the Jones Act. The Jones Act requires that vessels carrying goods between two U.S. points be American-made and American-flagged. The companies use foreign-flagged vessels. But they say they meet a Jones Act exemption because the seafood travels briefly by rail in Canada.
At issue is the rail line used to meet that exemption.
In those years, the companies complied with the Jones Act by using the New Brunswick Southern Railway to transport their seafood in Canada, a journey of more than 30 miles, the federal response says. But in 2012, the companies “radically” altered the movement of the seafood because they believed using the New Brunswick railway was too expensive, the federal response says.
Instead of using the established New Brunswick railway and moving product from one destination to another using a “through route,” the companies decided to use “a specially-built mini-railtrack, approximately 100 feet in length, that goes nowhere,” the federal government argues.
That rail line is called Bayside Canadian Railway. The seafood is loaded into trucks that travel on a flat rail car, back and forth on the track, for a total of 200 feet. It’s then driven into the U.S.

I read the transcripts of the depositions of the survivors and I have to say, my first reaction after the shootings was surprise that whoever took out lil’ Paulie Boat-Murder and his mom, didn’t try to get dad too. That kid was sociopathic garbage with at least two dead bodies tied to his name before he was 25, and I don’t think he got that way in *spite* of his parents. It didn’t escape my notice that nobody seemed really upset at the loss after the first round of shootings.
…After reading the details of the boat wreck, I certainly wasn’t.
The remaining son, as far as I can tell, isn’t as outright bad as his dead brother. I overheard that he got kicked out of school for cheating, but he hasn’t been directly implicated in any killings, so he’s got that going for him. Except of course for having a father who would allow his son to be orphaned and terrorized by the idea of assassins on the loose, in order to commit insurance fraud…

A neighbor is having several mature oaks taken down. Knowing that another one of that white oak stand almost fell on the house one night a few years back. I cannot blame them.
(In the earlier event, the tree trunk cracked and the entire tree began to list towards the house. A tree company who were friends of a neighbor graciously came at around 9pm and spent hours taking down the dangerous tree. With no damage to the house or family.)

I worked in a legal office in the 14th Circuit up until a couple of weeks ago (voluntarily left the job). The office had some involvement in the boat crash case, and everyone in the legal business in that part of SC knows the Murdaughs.
I read the transcripts of the depositions of the survivors and I have to say, my first reaction after the shootings was surprise that whoever took out lil’ Paulie Boat-Murder and his mom, didn’t try to get dad too. That kid was sociopathic garbage with at least two dead bodies tied to his name before he was 25, and I don’t think he got that way in *spite* of his parents. It didn’t escape my notice that nobody seemed really upset at the loss after the first round of shootings.
…After reading the details of the boat wreck, I certainly wasn’t.
The remaining son, as far as I can tell, isn’t as outright bad as his dead brother. I overheard that he got kicked out of school for cheating, but he hasn’t been directly implicated in any killings, so he’s got that going for him. Except of course for having a father who would allow his son to be orphaned and terrorized by the idea of assassins on the loose, in order to commit insurance fraud…
They reported the old man went into rehab for opioid addictions, but his soulless eyes scream crackhead to me. The shoot me and get the life insurance scenario definitely a crackhead 3-day binge scheme.
Newsom is basically a generic California Democrat. I don’t think he’s got the general popularity of Kamala Harris or Jerry Brown. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him lose to another Democrat in the general election next year… assuming someone would challenge him
The CAGOP though, they are in a weird position where they are basically a third party (they have just 195k more registered voters than independents in this state) but also the “only” “viable” alternative to Democrats.

A neighbor is having several mature oaks taken down. Knowing that another one of that white oak stand almost fell on the house one night a few years back. I cannot blame them.
(In the earlier event, the tree trunk cracked and the entire tree began to list towards the house. A tree company who were friends of a neighbor graciously came at around 9pm and spent hours taking down the dangerous tree. With no damage to the house or family.)
