I don’t know much about the reliability and speed of home test kits, but they’re showing up at our pharmacies.

The pharmacy in my county doesn’t have them. There aren’t that many pharmacies in the Panhandle. Perhaps one in Scottsbluff might have them.

Since I have to go to Denver to get my car fixed, perhaps I can get some there.

Here in Kentucky, you can walk into any pharmacy and get vaccinated, no appointment necessary. I don’t understand why vaccine availability is so limited in Nebraska. Is it because demand is so low?

It’s because the state governor’s office is restricting distribution of both vaccines and tests.

Public health officials, physicians, and hospitals are livid here, but there’s not much they can do.

There are three lawsuits pending regarding restricting access to Covid-19 information in the state. By the time those are resolved, we’ll all be dead.

The Department of Justice announced today criminal charges against 138 defendants, including 42 doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals, in 31 federal districts across the United States for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes that resulted in approximately $1.4 billion in alleged losses.

The charges target approximately $1.1 billion in fraud committed using telemedicine (the use of telecommunications technology to provide health care services remotely), $29 million in COVID-19 health care fraud, $133 million connected to substance abuse treatment facilities, or “sober homes,” and $160 million connected to other health care fraud and illegal opioid distribution schemes across the country.

“This nationwide enforcement action demonstrates that the Criminal Division is at the forefront of the fight against health care fraud and opioid abuse by prosecuting those who have exploited health care benefit programs and their patients for personal gain,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The charges announced today send a clear deterrent message and should leave no doubt about the department’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of patients and the integrity of health care benefit programs, even amid a continued pandemic.”

I dunno about #5: “Trumpism” per se is pretty much a cult, and like most cults, will probably it easier to keep on keeping on when its Founder/Guru/Idol/Prophet is safely dead and buried, and not popping up on social media to embarrass his followers/the world with nasty inane gibberish, like TFG is wont to do.

Of course, with “Trumpism”, the nasty in[s]ane gibberish is what the “base” loves, expects, and revels in, so there we are…

But otherwise, yeah: Mike Pence is the ultimate Empty Suit: it’s hard to see him getting much solid traction in a Presidential run. Though he’s obviously going to try (Dog help us!).

Pence has no traction, no charisma to build any, and no foundation to stand on with the GOP base or anti-Trump factions. In all places there will be other candidates deemed more attractive and this is not a party that will come to loggerheads and eventually select Pence as the “compromise” they can all agree on.

So it’s a continued grift, a delusion, or Pence perhaps thinks the horse can be taught to sing by 2024.

Any new news on the Evergrande trainwreck?

China’s Nightmare Evergrande Scenario Is an Uncontrolled Crash (Yahoo!, yesterday)

(Bloomberg) — Protests intensify at China Evergrande Group offices across the country as the developer falls further behind on promises to more than 70,000 investors. Construction of unfinished properties with enough floor space to cover three-fourths of Manhattan grinds to a halt, leaving more than a million homebuyers in limbo.

Fire sales pummel an already shaky real estate market, squeezing other developers and rippling through a supply chain that accounts for more than a quarter of Chinese economic output. Covid-weary consumers retrench even further, and the risk of popular discontent rises during a politically sensitive transition period for President Xi Jinping. Credit-market stress spreads from lower-rated property companies to stronger peers and banks. Global investors who bought $527 billion of Chinese stocks and bonds in the 15 months through June begin to sell.

While it’s impossible to know for sure what would happen if Beijing allows Evergrande’s downward spiral to continue unabated, China watchers are gaming out worst-case scenarios as they contemplate how much pain the Communist Party is willing to tolerate. Pressure to intervene is growing as signs of financial contagion increase.

“As a systemically important developer, an Evergrande bankruptcy would cause problems for the entire property sector,” said Shen Meng, director of Chanson & Co., a Beijing-based boutique investment bank. “Debt recovery efforts by creditors would lead to fire sales of assets and hit housing prices. Profit margins across the supply chain would be squeezed. It would also lead to panic selling in capital markets.”

As noted in the last thread, many common over-the-counter medications such as aspirin and Ex-Lax have been tested on historic foetal cell lines as well. As such the Arkansas hospital group which is getting people making such claims to sign a waiver noting all the different medications (and giving them firepower to fire them if they are caught using them, for cause—lying).

For the religious claim to be sincere, one would think you would need to keep up with all that (such as Jews or Muslims who keep up with what foods are restricted by their religious faiths).

There’s also the meme of “what’s really in the vaccine” where a list of the chemicals of a common apple are listed, indicating that anti-vaxxers don’t really know what they’re talking about.

Any new news on the Evergrande trainwreck?

Most recent I’m seeing is this, from earlier today (my time):

Chinese property giant Evergrande is on the brink of collapse, and analysts warn the potential fallout could have far-reaching implications that spill outside China’s borders.

“Evergrande’s collapse would be the biggest test that China’s financial system has faced in years,” says Mark Williams, chief Asia economist at Capital Economics.

Here’s how bad its problems are, and what’s in store for investors.

cnbc.com

I guess we’ll see if “too big to fail” is a thing in China. This might be remembered as China’s Lehman Brothers moment if it all goes sideways.

Be able to get her brand on Fox anytime she wants? Yup. That’s her definition of effective. It has nothing to do with constituent services or legislating. She cares only about her branding, and her brand is being an amoral sociopath whose idea of winning is seeing more dead people with covid, and then trying to blame Biden for not preventing more deaths.

A lot of them are missing a primary Trump ingredient of not being politicians. Cruz, Hawley, etc. etc. are solely known as such and that is still pretty much an automatic negative with a chunk of the base towards the pseudo-libertarian/pseudo-sovereign citizen side. (I use pseudo for them since they aren’t true believers there, it’s just a convenient label for them to claim as they follow a base “Do whatever is convenient for me to do and throw a tantrum when someone inconveniences me.”)

And I wonder whether the GOP upper echelons will accept another outsider celebrity as the figurehead/leader since a competent one would also step on them heavily as part of establishing firm control of the party. Bringing out a billionaire or businessman is essentially a Romney-redux and also takes the same risk.

Any new news on the Evergrande trainwreck?

Sound like the Muse of History (the bitch!) is setting China up for a rerun of 2008: although with a few different factors in play we (i.e. US/West-in-General) didn’t have back then [From the linked Bloomberg piece]:

Without a social safety net and with limited places to put their money, Chinese savers have for years been encouraged to buy homes whose prices were only ever supposed to go up. Today, real estate accounts for 40% of household assets and buying a house (or two) is a cultural touchstone

40% sounds awfully high; though it’s surprising to read the words “without a social safety net” wrt to Communist China. Though one has to presume that what “safety net” most Chinese have to rely on would mean something like North-Korea-levels of living standards….

“Given that the bulk of people’s wealth is already in property, even a 10% correction would be a serious knock to many people,” said Fraser Howie, an independent analyst and co-author of books on Chinese finance who has been following the country’s corporate sector for decades. “It would certainly knock their hopes and dreams and expectations about what property is.”

Just looking at the numbers (IMHO), China would seem lucky to be able to get away with a mere “10% correction”. Barring a serious intervention by the government, that is.

Another potential flashpoint is whether Evergrande can repay high-yield wealth management products that it sold to thousands of retail investors, including many of its own employees. About 40 billion yuan of the WMPs are due to be repaid, according to Caixin, a Chinese financial news service.

No one said the Chinese can’t be creative when they need to be: “wealth management product” as a euphemism for “risky junk instrument not worth the pixels it’s rendered in” is pretty clever.

Though of course, it being Communist China, they DO have a few remedies other governments don’t in terms of enforcing responsibility on the financial sector: probably involving firing squads…

Marine Cpl. Daegan Page laid to rest in Omaha (Omaha World-Herald, fifteen minutes ago)

He was one of those who died in the terrorist attack on the gate of Kabul’s airport.

Governor Ricketts ordered the flag to half-mast when the news came through (August 31) until sunset today.

When his remains arrived at Offutt AFB, there was a massive state and city police parade to accompany him from Offutt to the funeral home.

The American Legion’s Patriot Riders lodged a complaint with the City of Omaha and Mayor Jean Stothert (R), because they were prohibited in participating in the parade. The Marine’s family has specifically asked that they be allowed to participate, but were rejected.

1/6 was astroturfed and funded by right wing dark money. That same money isn’t available now, because those behind it are worried that they might be outed as responsible for the attempted overthrow of the US government, and they don’t care how many of their know nothing supporters/base get tossed in prison.

Though of course, it being Communist China, they DO have a few remedies other governments don’t in terms of enforcing responsibility on the financial sector: probably involving firing squads…

Bilking investors and all manner of financial shenanigans?

Yep, that’s a paddlin’ bullet to the back of the head.

A Lehman Bros-sized failure of Evergrande would be a major fiasco for Beijing. And a lot of ordinary, hardworking people are almost certainly going to be feeling the squeeze if that happens.

Only thing that could stop him would be serious legal complications. And not just misdemeanor charges or civil suits: I mean nothing short of a felony conviction.

Yay

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina judges struck down the state’s latest photo voter identification law on Friday, agreeing with minority voters that Republicans rammed through rules tainted by racial bias as a way to remain in power.

Two of the three trial judges hearing a lawsuit declared the December 2018 law is unconstitutional, despite being designed to implement a photo voter ID mandate added to the North Carolina Constitution in a referendum just weeks earlier. They said the law intentionally discriminates against Black voters, violating their equal protections.

The “was motivated at least in part by an unconstitutional intent to target African American voters,” Superior Court Judges Michael O’Foghludha and Vince Rozier wrote in their 100-page majority opinion. “Other, less restrictive voter ID laws would have sufficed to achieve the legitimate nonracial purposes of implementing the constitutional amendment requiring voter ID, deterring fraud, or enhancing voter confidence.”

With a workaround that they’d remain tax-exempt if they spend X% of their endowment every year on scholarships, endowed chairs, or pre-college prep courses for students who attend public school in underfunded communities.

(conflict of interest declaration: my highly selective elite alma mater has an enormous endowment, but they pass out so much financial aid the average tuition paid is less than half list price. And there’s enough rich kids from rich families paying full fare, that actually works out to 1/4 of the student body paying only what they can earn themselves with a part-time work-study job at the bookstore or library or dining hall. Almost 10% of the students pay nothing, not even room room and board. Also, 1% of each class is DACA kids.)

Spending some money on research (STEM and Liberal Arts) with some percentage for funding undergrads would be nice too.

It also would be nice to have some way to make sure students in some fields don’t effectively have to pay to take an internship, but I wouldn’t want to subsidize anyone taking advantage of unpaid interns who want an “in” into their profession of their choice.

Okay, I realize I’m being a pedant here, but…no, he isn’t calling for a tax even though he uses the word. He’s calling for the government to be able to take money from institutions that won’t comply with a slate of approved ideas and calling it a tax. As always, the specific language choices are rhetorical choices…it’s a very mild word for what is a totalitarian mechanism.

As always, part of the exercise is to destroy meaning: a tax isn’t a generalized levy to create a common wealth pool expanded to increase general welfare, it’s a weapon to punish deviancy and enforce cultural norms. That is…a really telling transformation of a word. That’s…100% Nuremburg Law shit right there—create a series of penalties that transfer wealth from the noncompliant, stigmatized population to the compliant volk—but even if the specific proposal fails the general principle…taxes are meant to hurt people, redistribution is good if it is from degenerate kinds to correct kinds…will persist in his audience’s understanding of how government works.

What’s her definition of effective?

Being able to pass legislation? Nope. She’s done nothing.

Trump is her model. All you have to do is talk, be a white supremacist, and disparage the other side as communists/socialists/Marxists , and riches and power will be thrown your way too.

160
The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 17, 2021 • 2:25:00pm

The thing about sovereign citizens is that a lot of them don’t just go off and do their own thing. That magic-words understanding of law is applied to the task of imposing on others—including just straight stealing shit—and I think that’s an important part of understanding them.

Because there’s a big pattern of reactionaries creating or finding concepts that allow them to thread the needle of (1) conceiving of themselves as good, smart people, (2) doing things that are antisocial and dumb…and this is just part of the buffet options.

ADD: I think it was just one sub: I might very well be wrong about this, and the deal bigger that I assumed..

It’s complicated and messy and China and all sorts of stuff. The US/UK agreement with Australia for the Royal Australian Navy to get nuclear subs came out of nowhere. The French who have/had a signed contract with the Australian government about their project to build up to 13 conventionally-powered long-range subs in Adelaide were not in the loop before the news was released. The initial French-based project wasn’t going well for reasons, the ‘solution’ is a bit of a mess too since the Australians have no nuclear propulsion reactor building experience or infrastructure. Expect lots of fudging and side-stepping to come.

My guess — the RAN will lease some older Virginia-class nuke boats from the US for operational coverage and crew training while they build monkey-model Virginia/Astute hulls in Adelaide and fit them out with US or UK-made sparkly bits for their propulsion systems.

Nuclear subs allow the RAN to cover more of the Pacific with fewer hulls than conventionally-powered subs can and they’re more effective. Australia has a very large coastline and not much of a Navy complement to crew more than a handful of subs to start with.

Palin said that she “personally” liked Lemon and that he had been nice to her in the past.

“But I am one of those white, common sense conservatives,” Palin said. “I believe in science and I have not taken the shot.”

“One, because the waitress never came back to ask me if I’m ready for that shot,” she joked. “But two, because I do believe in science and the Fauci-ism of the day back then was, if you’ve had COVID—I’ve had COVID—well then, Mother Nature was creating an immunity.”

It wasn’t clear exactly which comments by Dr. Anthony Fauci Palin was referring to but the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has repeatedly urged people to get vaccinated.

I’ve always enjoyed watching my beagles ears flop as they ran around.
Sometimes after our afternoon walks, and there was a strong breeze from the right direction, my boy Titus Argos and I would sit by the mailboxes and sniff into the wind as his ear gained lift.

I will never eat a tuna casserolle again. It is a vivid reminder that for one third of the Friday’s in my yoot I had to choke that vile swill down my throat, as did my younger sibs. The other two Fridays were Salmon cakes (Meh), and Mac & cheese (Edible).

My Catholic upbringing.

this tuna casserole was nothing like the vile concoction of our youth.
it turned out to be excellent, much to my surprise and delight.

Oregon Medical Board revokes license of doctor who bucked COVID guidelines, spread misinformation

The Oregon Medical Board revoked the license of a Dallas doctor earlier this month after he refused to follow COVID-19 guidelines in his office, spread misinformation about masks and over-prescribed opioids to his patients, according to medical board documents.

The board also fined Steven Arthur LaTulippe $10,000 on Sept. 2.

LaTulippe sued the medical board in January after his license was suspended the month before, when the board found his office was placing patients in danger by disregarding COVID-19 mandates and asking patients to remove their masks.

LaTulippe’s family practice, South View Medical Arts, did not properly screen patients and relied on the receptionist’s ability to visually gauge whether visitors were sick, according to the medical board documents.

“[LaTulippe] had trained his receptionist ‘to look at [the patient] and just take a look at them and see if they look sick,’ and, if the patient was ‘smiling and happy,’ the receptionist was instructed to ask how the patient was feeling,” medical board documents said.

At least 95% of patients did not use masks at the clinic, which is in the city of Dallas west of Salem, between March and December 2020, LaTulippe told medical board officials.

Patients did wear masks if they had tested positive for COVID-19 or were exhibiting extreme symptoms, according to the medical board. LaTulippe still would not wear a mask while meeting with those patients, however.

He told patients in person and through fliers in his office that masks were ineffective against COVID-19 and could even cause carbon dioxide poisoning, according to the medical board.

Here’s where my figure comes from. The Kaiser Family Foundation recently studied three months of data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and concluded that “preventable Covid-19 hospitalizations” have cost the health care system an estimated $5.7 billion. The foundation defines preventable hospitalization as “hospitalizations of unvaccinated adults.” (If you want to read the report, it’s at kff.org.)

When you see an unmasked person, or a person half-assing it like their nose is sticking out, then, what they are saying is: “I’m not part of that tribe that gets Covid; I am doing the bare minimum but don’t mistake me for a poor person who fears getting a POC disease”

That’s some pretty special over-thinking. A guy unmasked or improperly masked is simply saying “I’m an idiot”.

re: #181 Eclectic Cyborg

This is my question too.

Seeing this discussed in a couple of discords.

Australia pulled the plug on the contract they had with the French firm for developing a new submarine for them. The contract included the fact that local (Australian) industrial development would be part of it. The French firm was not being very cooperative in the local development, and the contract costs were escalating constantly. (Someone mentioned that the original contract was probably a best case, low-ball, cost estimate and that the French company expected to be able to nickel and dime additional costs as issues arose. Which makes sense since in procurement it’s pretty easy to get cost overruns paid for.)

So Australia pulls the plug and the US (and others) quickly step in with an alternative. Which will further infuriate France since having an alternative is pretty important towards Australia making that decision.
