Mike Dunford, of ‘Oh fuck-a-duck!’ fame, did an interesting thread on the meaning of the UK reverting to Imperial from Metric.

In short, his points are:

1. Regulating and enforcing weight and measure standards has literally been a state function since the Bronze Age.

2. The task is critical to commerce. It ensures that people understand and know what they are buying.

3. There can only be one official system. An honest system requires either 1 Quart(US) and 0.946353 liters, or 1 Quart(Imperial) and 1.13652 liters, or 1 liter and .879877 Quart(Imperial). or 1.05669 Quart(US) and 1 liter.

4. The current UK system regulates metric and permits also labeling with Imperial. To build an Imperial capability would require years to recruit, train and organize the personnel, years to develop, purchase and integrate the equipment and years to educate the population on the Imperial system. Reportedly none of this has been around since the 1970s.

tl;dr - An honest return to Imperial will take the UK years.

I was considering an unheard act of generosity and social beneficence: Actually handing out FULL SIZE Snickers on Halloween night.
It may not be as bad as it sounds, they cost about seventy cents each in bulk and we don’t get many trick-or-treaters here.
Otoh, if word spread, as is all too likely in the social media age, we might be inundated with sweet toothed freeloaders. They could come in vast hordes from as far away as Benbrook and Azle or, Cthuhu forbid, Fort Worth itself. Fortunately the house is a quarter of a mile from the road and we usually set up a trick or treat stand at the gate, complete with plastic pumpkins, lights, and its own cooler. We could move all that surreptitiously to some nearby pulpit pimp’s spread and replace the Snickers with notes and Chick tracts condemning Halloween and trick or treat as godless witchcraft and devil worship. The disappointed mob would take that well, I am sure.

Long time no see. Hope everyone’s well. Caught the gubernatorial debate between McAuliffe and Youngkin last night. Youngkin has parts of him that remind you of the worst of Trump and Romney but he’s not particularly charismatic and sounds rehearsed and he’s so full of shit. I almost felt like I was watching another round of Biden and Trump because McAuliffe wasn’t having Youngkin’s bullshit.

1/6 really hit close to home. I can literally ride my bike and be on a Metro rail towards the Capitol within 15-20 minutes. I’m never gonna forget that and how Trump bungled Covid. DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — A US official says the Biden administration is planning “massive movements” of Haitian migrants in a small Texas border town on flights to Haiti starting Sunday.

Plans have yet to be finalized, but officials are considering five to eight flights a day. San Antonio, the nearest major city, may be one of the departure cities. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The flights represent a swift and dramatic response to thousands of Haitian migrants who have assembled under or around a bridge in Del Rio, Texas.

The U.S has been expelling many Central Americans to Mexico under pandemic-related authority that denies migrants an opportunity to claim asylum. But Mexican authorities will not accept Haitians and other nationalities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it has closed vehicle and pedestrian traffic in both directions on the Del Rio bridge.

There will be no nuclear weapons. Australia is a signatory of the non-proliferation pact.

The UK owns part of the “combined” Trident “missile” pool used by both the US & UK. UK missiles use UK designed/built warheads. When UK “missile” is due for maintenance the warheads are removed and it returned to the joint stockpile. A different pool missile is issued to the UK, mated with their weapons, and put into service

I was gonna say, Australia is a close ally, but I wouldn’t think they’re that close. Britain’s the only one we even tried to collaborate with on nuclear research, then we locked everything down pretty early on. A nuclear-powered sub is big enough on its own, we don’t go around handing Admiral Rickover’s toys to just anybody.

The British Astute-class SSN is capable of firing Tomahawks through it’s torpedo tubes.
One of the problems facing Australia is manning these new boats. A Virginia requires twice the crew of the RAN’s current Collins-class. The Astute requires about one and a half times the crew. Australia already has problems meeting personnel numbers.
The original plan was to acquire 12 conventional Attack-class boats with roughly the same crewing as the current Collins. Which was already going to be a challenge to man.
Thoughts from a number of mil-industry folks from down under that I interact with are getting the sense that it will be Astute boats, eight in total, that way matching to original Collins replacement plan personnel numbers.

It’s extremely easy to setup a robocaller and spoof the caller ID.

The telecom industry gave up blocking numbers for a couple of reasons. First, the blocking tables quickly grew huge and second because the robocallers will spoof real phone numbers and so the legitimate owners of the numbers were getting blocked.

The industry had to implement SHAKEN by this last June. It’s supposed to have the telecom companies validate the caller ID before completing calls to other networks.

There are a few carriers who allow spam calls into the network. I haven’t checked, but I’m willing to bet they haven’t implemented SHAKEN.

In any case, the robocallers change the spoofed number constantly, so blocking is pointless.

If it’s for me they leave a message and I get back.

“Absolutely no bank is willing to provide a hedge, at least not in size,” Jochen Felsenheimer, a managing director at XAIA Investment in Munich who trades CDS and bonds, said in a phone interview. I do not have any J-Pop songs in my library, but I have a bunch of ballroom, Latin American and Israeli songs. And I remember a bit from the American scene.

It is kind of amusing to hear one of the songs and say, okay I remember a similar Spanish Rumba song from Edie Gorme and Steve Lawrence.

One song that I intend to do a bit of further research on is Kaze’s “22-year-old farewell”.

Today I rode my ebike on a loop consisting of a few paths that makes a nice casual 25 mile route that takes two hours which pointed to something interesting my average speed, no matter the ride I’ve gone on, I’ve always averaged around 12.5 miles over the ride according to the trip meter at the end of the battery’s charge. Even by the odometer total time and total mileage. In 92 hours 38 minutes I have covered 1153 miles., an average of 12.45 miles an hour. I think that includes the waits at traffic lights or trail crossings. I try to stay at a nice, safe for others, 14 MPH on the trails but on long straight shots with nobody around I’ll cruise at 18-2320* MPH. On roadways with the randomly disappearing bike lanes I travel around 23-2620* MPH.The slowest I can go is about 3.6 MPH, I get wobbly below that, but I can loiter behind pedestrians for a bit before the chance to pass.

* - Legal Class 2 ebike, other speeds just a typo.

Technically speaking the current USN Virginia-class subs are overkill for what Australia needs which is fast very-long-range blue-water patrol subs to cover a few million square kilometres of the southern Pacific Ocean. The Block V Virginias are city-ablators, very big submersible cruise-missile carriers meant for shore bombardment with a secondary role as patrol boats. Australia’s not in that business.

The Australians want to build the hulls at home and just rebuilding or constructing a shipyard that can assemble a 10,000 tonne Block V Virginia would cost a shitload. They could build smaller older versions of the Virginia class, Block II or Block III say without the missile magazine aft of the sail but that’s like buying a “monkey model” tank from the Soviets.

The 7,000 tonne Astutes are pretty big compared to Australia’s ageing Collins-class subs which they’d be replacing but the facilities to produce the hulls would cost a lot less. Technically speaking the Astutes are considered to be better patrol boats than the Virginias. It might be the final result is a bodge, maybe an Astute hull with American sparkly bits for propulsion but a sub is designed and built around its propulsion system so the technical workarounds would be messy. Besides being able to put a discreet Rolls-Royce badge on the front sonar dome adds a certain amount of cachet to your daily ride, don’t you think?

Taken as I am with the Fagradalsfjall volcano, because it’s one of the more photogenic geologic events at the moment - it seems to really want to be imaged - the real boon is to the drone-aficionados.

New video today by a guy who makes general purpose videos, but he does a very good job at setting the table, so to speak. This was shot a few days ago shortly after fresh lava started to come down in Natthagi valley. Much more lava has come down the past couple of days after he recorded this.

Still, some of his opening shots really show well how full Geldingadalir valley (that is the highest of the valleys) is with lava. It’s a couple of kilometers from the cliff back to the volcano:

Everyone is accusing the French for the cost overruns and delays, but look at the history of this project — the Australians refused to buy off the shelf, changed suppliers multiple times, insisted from the start that they didn’t want nuclear propulsion, only signed the contract in 2016 for a boat they know doesn’t exist yet, kept changing the specs and then cancelled the contract in 2021, just a month after high level meetings where they claimed all the problems were sorted.

Frankly I wish the Brits luck with this, but I expect the Australians to keep on fucking it up .

Anyone care to bet when the new subs enter service? I’ve seen reports of 2040…

The company’s stock price has cratered by 90 per cent in the past year, and most of their bonds are in junk status.

It’s noted that it’s unlikely that Beijing would just let it go belly-up, because of the obvious risk of social instability, so other possibilities mentioned are a break-up of the company and an orderly wind-down. An outright bailout is also considered unlikely.

In my tiny village, I made a point of getting the Moderna vaccine as soon as it was available to me back in January, then telling everyone in town about it.

That was before the derp about vaccines really started cranking up, and while we still had a vaccine and testing centre in my county. Several people told me my experience (and that of my wife later in May) convinced them to get the vaccine themselves. Having a pair of parents die here early on leaving their three children as orphans drove the point home.

Now with all the lies about vaccines, I doubt if I did the same thing it would work.

Several people told me my experience (and that of my wife later in May) convinced them to get the vaccine themselves. Having a pair of parents die here early on leaving their three children as orphans drove the point home.

Now with all the lies about vaccines, I doubt if I did the same thing it would work.

In a way, the Delta variant is a boon to those of us who are vaccinated. Because it is so contagious, it is crowding out other variants that might be more vaccine resistant. Dog help us if Delta remains extremely contagious, and also evolves vaccine resistance. But I assume researchers are diligently working to update vaccines, like they do with the flu vaccine every year.

Smallpox wasn’t that lethal in populations that had been exposed to it for a long time, like much of Europe. Other similar but less lethal diseases of the same type like cowpox and chickenpox provided some protection against the more dangerous smallpox hence the use of infected cattle to provide inoculation material for humans starting back in the 1700s.

High lethality in a population occurs from new diseases they haven’t been exposed to — SARS-nCoV-2 is a ‘novel’ coronavirus of a sort humans haven’t been infected with en masse before. What we’ve got going for us with SARS-nCoV2 is modern medical technologies and hygiene, social controls and miracle vaccines with high efficacy. Even so it’s still a dangerous and deadly disease but nothing like, say, the Black Death that killed 30% of Europe’s population in about four years.

According to this obituary Brian lost his life to COVID. He was a blue blood anti-vaxxer and it appears that he and his wife attended the Jan 6 insurrection in Washington DC. Both Brian and his wife contracted COVID, she is recovering.

This is in relation to Assembly Bill 562, which would require schools to notify parents so they can opt their children out, of any subject activity, book, test, &c which contains any mention of gender identity, sexual orientation, &c.

It also defines “gender” as “sex.”

Hernando County (Fla.) Schools coaches are holding baptisms on the school football field during school hours.

They helpfully posted video of their crime (12:03) where they brag about doing it, lie for Jesus that it “ain’t even legal in some states” (it ain’t legal in any state), proselytise to students during school time, &c.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation, when it receives a complaint, usually just points out how a school’s religious actions violate the law and point out steps to bring the school back in line.

Not this time. They are demanding the coaches be formally reprimanded, and if not, they will bring a lawsuit against the school for violation of the law. (FFRF does not engage in Church-State separation cases unless they get a local complaint. Most members of FFRF are Christians.)

But I think that mj use is no longer criminalized in Va.

And the attorneys could have had her take the 5th if everybody hadn’t been blindsided by the judge’s ambush.

Additionally, the detectives who briefed her that morning stated that they were prepared to testify that she did not meet state inebriation definition and, in fact, was fact acting quite normally.

The judge pulled a similar type game recently with a female defense attorney.

There were four variants of smallpox. Fatality rates amongst the unvaccinated:

Ordinary: Death rate 9%

A variant caused the discrete pustules to grow together and form sheets, which would then cause the skin to slough off. The fatality rate was 62%.

Modified (occurred in vaccinated people): not fatal

A variant called “smallpox without rash” occurred with the other symptoms (fever, &c) but could only be confirmed by antibody studies.

Malignant (pustules were flat and contained little fluid), nearly 100% fatal. For those few who survived, it left no depigmentation.

Early Hemorrhagic: bleeding under the skin: 100% fatal

A small percentage of Early Hemorrhagic smallpox became Late Hemorrhagic, which changed to Ordinary smallpox. If a person got that far, the survival rate was 4%.

A new orthopox genus virus has been discovered, Alaskapox, in 2015.

3rd and 4th known cases of ‘Alaskapox’ — both mild — were recently diagnosed in the Fairbanks area (Anchorage Daily News, September 15, 2021)

Wife an I are about to bump into this. We are in Day 9 of what would be a minimum 10 day isolation. Our numbers are good, we both still have mild but obvious symptoms. We do not have good guidance on:

1) When can we do a cautious return to shopping, doctor visits, etc. without spreading the crap?

2) What is the effect of our breakthrough infections on scheduling of impending 3rd shot boosters? I think it should probably be delayed a bit under a couple rationales.

I’m sure I mentioned this before — but use AT&T on my IPhone and almost never answer calls identified as “Spam risk”, but their algorithm flagged a return call from my dentist as such and a return call from an investment clearing house — a call that I was anxiously awaiting— as such. So I remain skeptical about these services.

They note a few things in the article. The man who owns Evergrande was at one time counted as China’s third-richest person, with an estimated money hoard of $30,000,000,000.

Debt — and lots of it. The company has almost two trillion yuan of debt on its books, the equivalent of more than $300 billion US. The company aggressively borrowed money to buy more land to develop, and sold apartments quickly at low margins to raise enough cash to start the cycle again — which works fine as a business model, until it doesn’t.

In late 2020, new rules that brought more scrutiny to the company’s finances revealed higher-than-expected debt loads. That, coupled with mounting construction delays, spooked buyers, setting up a vicious cycle. The company began its descent to pariah status as lenders and buyers lost their nerve in lockstep with each other.

Billionaires are plain bad for any economy.

While a lot of their debt was from bad real estate deals, it also came from diversifying like any good conglomerate: theme parks, bottled water, and a soccer team.

My general approach is that if a call number doesn’t have a contact entry in my cell phone, I let it roll over to voice mail.

I also have a land line. All those calls roll over to my answering machine.

If an unknown caller leaves a message, and I decide it is legitimate, I’ll call back.

Because of the spammers ability to spoof any number, I do not bother to block specific numbers.

Those are now relevant questions to me. My wife and MIL tested Covid after exposure to unvaccinated person. Both fully vaccinated with two different types. Both experience lingering cold symptoms and are on day 8 of 10 day isolation both feeling a lot better
I tested negative and have tried to distance and mask and limit my exposure to wife, friends and outsiders too, just in case. I’m going to test again on Monday

More Medical Boards Warn Against Spreading COVID Vax Falsehoods (Medpage Today, September 10, 2021)

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) issued a joint statement Thursday supporting the Federation of State Medical Boards, which warned physicians in early August that their licenses could be taken away or otherwise sanctioned by state boards if they disseminated misinformation about the COVID vaccines.

Their statement follows a similar one from the American Board of Emergency Medicine issued in late August.

“We also want all physicians certified by our boards to know that such unethical or unprofessional conduct may prompt their respective board to take action that could put their certification at risk,” the joint statement read. “Spreading misinformation or falsehoods to the public during a time of a public health emergency goes against everything our boards and our community of board certified physicians stand for. The evidence that we have safe, effective and widely available vaccines against COVID-19 is overwhelming. We are particularly concerned about physicians who use their authority to denigrate vaccination.”

This has been a problem with a minority of physicians for some time it seems.

All the boards between them represent roughly half the physicians in the United States.

While [Warren] Newton [MD, MPH] has heard arguments that threatening and disciplining physicians for spreading misinformation goes against the concept of free speech, he countered, “Our bottom line is speech that puts people at risk is not OK. It’s not OK to use disinformation if it impacts patients.”

“We wanted to make a statement that would support our colleagues who are doing the right thing, and differentiate them from colleagues who are putting out misinformation and let people know we are paying attention and taking it seriously,” Baron said. “Is it even medical practice to be posting this information on Facebook or standing up in front of a school board?”

When we lived in Ponca City, a small group of atheists including myself and my wife would meet at a downtown coffee shop. The owner had opened the shop after hours for the group every month.

At the time Ponca City welcomed the new business, as they were trying to revitalise the downtown area.

The shop owner is an atheist and lets atheists congregate was too much for the good white people of the city (the Ponca natives didn’t give a crap). They started picketing the shop when the owner hosted a talk from the Oklahoma ACLU to the atheist group.

Then a judge’s sixteen year-old daughter wrote a blistering letter to the Ponca City News about atheists shouldn’t be allowed to meet, they were corrupting the town, &c.

I wrote a letter back, which the paper printed, schooling (gently) the judge’s daughter on the I Amendment.

That caused pickets at our house, demanding we leave. Though threats were hurled, there was no property damage or violence.

It wasn’t too long after that we left. My wife sold the house at a 50% loss so we could get the hell out of there.

Just going to point out that A LOT of religious liberty cases are brought by non-favored religions. Speaking of football fields, Santa Fe ISD v. Doe (2000) was brought by Mormon and Catholic plaintiffs because they were being subjected to explicitly Baptist prayers. (And in 2000, I suspect some of those prayers contained rather open proselytising of the ‘heathen’ Catholics and ‘cultie’ Mormons.)

While we have two major cases where Jehovah’s Witnesses were the plaintiffs (Minersville v. Gobitis and its reversal, WV State Board of Ed v. Barnette), apparently Canada’s religious freedoms prior to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) were almost exclusively built on Jehovah’s Witnesses suing the various provinces and feds. Interesting how that works out.

One thing I gotta give the Republicans: Their voters turn out for everything. Millage increase for the cemetery board? They’re on it. Special election for county surveyor? High turnout. School board elections? Well, that’s part of how we got in this mess.
