Architect of Texas Abortion Ban Argues for Overturning Roe: Women Don’t Need Abortions, They Can Just Stop Having Sex

Politics • Views: 19,127

One of the main right wing religious creeps behind the new Texas abortion ban says that overturning Roe v. Wade isn’t really a big deal for women, because they can simply change their behavior and stop having sex so damned much.

The legal architect of the Texas abortion ban has argued in a supreme court brief that overturning Roe v Wade, the landmark decision which guarantees a right to abortion in the US, could cause women to practice abstinence from sexual intercourse as a way to “control their reproductive lives”.

Former Texas solicitor general Jonathan Mitchell, who played a pivotal role in designing the legal framework of the state’s near-total abortion ban, also argued on behalf of anti-abortion group Texas Right to Life that women would still be able to terminate pregnancies if Roe was overturned by traveling to “wealthy pro-abortion” states like California and New York with the help of “taxpayer subsidies”.

“Women can ‘control their reproductive lives’ without access to abortion; they can do so by refraining from sexual intercourse,” Mitchell wrote in the brief. “One can imagine a scenario in which a woman has chosen to engage in unprotected (or insufficiently protected) sexual intercourse on the assumption that an abortion will be available to her later. But when this court announces the overruling of Roe, that individual can simply change their behavior in response to the court’s decision if she no longer wants to take the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.”

And the Murdaugh case is now even more resembling

So yesterday, the whole housekeeper death became even more convoluted than ever—with it being many millions of dollars missing from the settlement; Murdaugh taking responsibility (sort of) for the death, which was reported as natural causes, and more and more confusion.

(Warning—it will make your head hurt)
myrtlebeachonline.com

Now, “Fast Eddie,” who supposedly was in on the attempted suicide at the side of the road, has a totally different story than the one Murdaugh and his lawyers presented in court. Oh, and he claims he is NOT Murdaugh’s drug dealer, and was not only a client but also a distant cousin. Of course, it’s the NY Post, so I have many questions.

(And he seems more upset about how he looked in court than, ya know, the things he’s accused of)

“I know what they’re trying to say about me and it ain’t true,” Curtis told The Post during a porch-side interview Friday.

“It was the craziest situation I ever been involved with. I was set up to be the fall guy. And those damn pictures of me in the newspaper! I was looking at them this morning. They didn’t let me take a damn shower!”

Stay tuned…

You may have heard that 5 zebras escaped from a farm in Maryland just outside Washington DC a couple of weeks ago.

Animal services officials in Prince George’s County said Wednesday that the five zebras escaped more than a week ago from a private farm near Bellefield and Duley Station roads in the Upper Marlboro area. Officials said the owner, whom they did not identify, has been trying to catch them by luring them with grain to a temporary corral area but has had no luck.
…snip…
“Never approach them, and don’t try to pet them,” Taylor advised. “They’re not going to chase you down. But they are zebras, so they’re not handled by people a lot, so to defend themselves they could bite.”
…snip..
The zebras’ saga started Aug. 31 when they got out and the owner couldn’t find them, according to Taylor. He said a homeowner called to report seeing the zebras in a wooded area.

The dying hasn’t yet stopped and it probably won’t stop for some time to come. How about one in a hundred dead over the next five years or so? That sort of death toll is possible even without a new COVID-19 variant that existing vaccine immunities don’t protect against as well as they do today. Excess deaths during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US are about a million already, that’s roughly one death in three hundred.

Winter (and Thanksgiving) is coming.

Is there some rule that says it has to be chronological? John Glenn is better known in this country, not just because of nationalism but because the controlled press of the Soviet Union was not so good at these things. He is also better known because he lived a lot longer and went on to serve for many years in the US Senate. I assigned him primacy on that basis. Sue me if you like.

Obliquely related to that: I have hearing problems that are worse in certain situations, e.g. noisy environments. As a result I rely on lip reading a lot to supplement speech comprehension. For the most part, unless we’re in a quiet room, if I can’t watch your mouth I probably can’t make out what you’re saying very well.

Without going into too much detail, I’m about 75% sure that a lot of women think I’m just laser-focusing on their boobs in these situations, because I’m very obviously looking somewhere lower than their eye-level. I notice when they sub(?)consciously cross their arms over their chest or make other ‘covering-up’ gestures.

Sometimes I feel kinda bad about it but nobody has ever directly brought it up so I don’t want to just announce, “hey by the way I’m not looking at your tits”.

re: #89 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

Most people supposedly focus on either a person’s eyes or their lips when listening to them. Lips are fairly close to the eyes, so I wouldn’t assume women think you are looking at the boobs. (Speaking as a well-endowed woman who rarely assumes men are looking at my boobs.)

For one Capitol reporter, Jan. 6 was the final straw — but he had watched a crisis brew for years, by Margaret Sullivan
washingtonpost.com

The Capitol was Taylor’s second home, the focus of so much of his daily life and conversation. He still speaks of “the sanctity of the place”; it’s clear that on a certain level he became accustomed to its rhythms and routines. “You become invested in a functional ecosystem,” he said.
But that place was already beginning to change long before Jan. 6, he said. “I was there when the wheels came off,” he told me, during the Obama era, when the tea-party caucus of conservative House members seized increasing influence. From that point on, “a large percentage of congressional activity was being spent posturing for political bases” rather than, say, putting together the budget.
He now sees the dysfunction as irrevocable.
He has particularly harsh words for House of Representatives Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, as prominent among those in Congress whose “approach to their jobs is too often bad-faith bull——.” For similar reasons, he’s tough on Mitch McConnell, too. On his now more freewheeling Twitter account, Taylor quote-tweeted the Senate minority leader’s recent bluster about raising the debt limit and how Republicans “will not facilitate another reckless, partisan taxing and spending spree.”

We had a Laguna Burger yesterday. Yes, the famous, award winning, green chile cheese burger from the Laguna Pueblo.

Now, as you know, I’m not a beef person. I wasn’t terribly impressed with the Lota Burger version.

But oh my. This was super really damn good. I got the small version, aka The Wimp. Dude got the regular size. Absolutely delicious, like if all beef burgers tasted like this, I might actually eat beef on a regular basis.

Anyhoo, the bad news is we both felt absolutely terrible for several hours, a burger hangover for the ages.

I think we are both too old for Laguna Burger. (OK, maybe once a year.)

The Husband went to take Cleo outside and slipped and fell on the deck a few minutes ago. It’s wet and rainy and his shoes were smooth on the bottom and ta da! At least he wasn’t on the stairs. I had to help him get up using a chair scooted next to him so he could hold onto me while I sat in the chair and pull himself up (he is not a small dude, he’s around 300 lbs right now). He’s ok, but it’s going to hurt later for sure. He hit his knees and then fell forward. That was a ridiculously close call. It also was not fun. Even slightly. (Exhale……)

In their stunted brainstems, they’re running this against the propaganda that “99.9% of people recover from COVID, so why should I worry?!”, the implication being that since 99.9% “recover,” then that must mean that 99.9% of cases are minor or even asymptomatic and the remaining .1% are the people who get progressively sicker and then die. So why put their faith in a vaccine that doesn’t even prevent illness 100% of the time when they can just gamble that they’ll be in the group that never got even a cough?

People are easily dazzled by numbed.

Standard propaganda trick is to get people to respond to an allegation through emphasizing how big (or how small) something is, making implications that are not supported but people don’t critically inquire whether the implication really follows from the numbers.

This was done with climate change for decades. And some people, who even in 2021 come across the deceptive claims the deniers pumped out decades ago, still fall for it.

Mrs. Fish and I returned from our first major social foray in public, an anniversary celebration at a local dinner theater showing a rendition of The Music Man. It was a magnificent performance, and a delicious meal, and a badly needed break from the monotony of pandemic life and kids. Mask usage was very high, except during the meal, which basically renders the effectiveness of masks null and void; but who knows, maybe it’s enough. They’ve been running for 2-1/2 months so far, I assume they have data to suggest if it’s working for them or not.

In this case, it’s like watching compulsive gamblers constantly chasing that money that they lost in the first hand, telling themselves after each successive loss that so long as they “break even” then they’ve come out ahead.

First they declare they’ll never catch COVID.
Then they catch it, so they insist they’ll never get sick.
As they get sick, they insist they’ll never progress past a cough.
Once the cough starts getting worse, they’re sure they won’t get bad enough to be hospitalized.
From their hospital bed, they insist they won’t be one of those wimps that needs to be ventilated.
So that when the tube is getting crammed down their throat as the doctor injects them with sedatives, their dimming mind insists they’ll be one of those who makes a full recovery.

After all, 99.9% of people eventually recover, so the odds have to be in their favor…right?

3. Now she’s progressed to far worse symptoms and is moaning about how horrible it all is.

Not only did they get orders on 1/6, but they also knew the cops and soldiers were on a short leash, while a lot of them genuinely thought that Dear Leader would either successfully “take back” the presidency or issue a pardon anyway on his way out the door.

Now that they know the cops aren’t going to play around, and that so many of their own are still in the “Finding Out” stage because Donny left their asses hanging as he scurried out the back door, they’re not all that eager to “Fuck Around” anymore.

99.9% may apply to those under age 50(?) or so — at least pre-Delta. But it certainly doesn’t mean that those who survive aren’t suffering long-term damage that may affect their life expectancy. We want the full Contagion experience, where people are just dropping dead in front of our eyes or we’re seeing piles of bodies being dumped into long pits in the ground. Hell, even in the new version of The Stand, they went from the stereotypical 90s depiction of illness (bloodshot eyes, thick snot running from the nose, sallow skin) and amped it up by giving everybody dying of Captain Trips goiters the size of softballs. The only way anybody was going to rethink their position on COVID from it being “No worse than the flu” is if catching it meant they were coughing up buckets of blood as their skin rotted off before their very eyes.

There are always deniers, but what tends to move public opinion is when a viral outbreak is having visible, serious effects. Smallpox and polio vaccination efforts benefit a lot from the very visible effects of both viruses on the human body, whether it was being covered in pustules or being rendered paralyzed to the point of being crammed into an iron lung. Just having a coworker drop dead at work when they seemed “fine” at the start of the day can get management to take a pandemic seriously.

Compare to the mindset of COVID, where it’s treated like an inconvenience when you find out that your coworker who’s had a cough for a couple days turned up positive, and people feel safe because “I don’t feel sick.”

People would not have been banging on the doors of government buildings, demanding that lockdowns be lifted so they could buy potting soil. You would not have had people in Wal-Mart coughing and spitting on others. Why? Those fuckers would have barricaded themselves inside their houses and threatened to shoot anybody who came within a foot of the end of their lawn.

Of course, this might be a bit of bitterness seeping through from a guy whose entire industry (hospitality) was deemed so “vital” to the local economy that while virtually everybody else in my household got weeks/months long paid vacations, I was still plugging away while my employer thanked me for my “dedication.”

Thursday there were heavy rains in parts of the DC region which caused some flooding in low lying areas.

Among the flooded roads were some low areas of Columbia Pike between Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, near the Potomac River. Some drivers were trapped in the high water.

A bus filled with Marines in their dress uniforms got out and waded through the flooded roads near the Pentagon to help rescue some of the trapped drivers:

From the “Alas, if only someone could’ve seen this coming” files:

Millions of families are facing a ‘perfect storm’ of empty supermarket shelves and an imminent hike in the cost of living of around £1,500 a year, it emerged today.

A shortage of toys ahead of Christmas and soaring costs of used cars - to the extent that some are now more expensive than new models - is also contributing to what is set to be a difficult end to the year for many households.

Brexit, increased gas prices and the Covid pandemic have all contributed to the crisis, which will leave families substantially out of pocket over the coming months.

I finally had a chance to look at the video of mtg firing the Barrett .50 cal rifle. And, no… just no.

That videoed explosion is not what a .50 cal does. It puts a big hole in things and can go through a lot of concrete or some steel. It can go near two miles fairly accurately. But that explosion was, I strongly suspect, done with explosives manually set off under the car

I’ve seen 155mm HE shells directly hit cars. The car body can go flying quite impressively, or be rapidly disassembled, and any gas in the fuel tank might be set on fire. But, I’ve never seen such an explosion without a lot of explosives placed in the car and separately detonated.

Looks to me to be a case of performative nonsense.

The Mythbusters busted that Hollywood myth ages ago, the only plausible way to cause a car to explode when hitting it with a bullet is if that bullet is a tracer and it has enough distance from the target to ignite before hitting the gas tank. And even then you might start a fire, not cause the car to explosively disassociate itself.

According to this @BreitbartNews Op-Ed, liberals are pushing the vaccine aggressively because if liberals are for it, #MAGA will be against it, and #MAGA will die, therefore handing liberals more elections.

The MAGA anti-vax insanity was never the deliberate suicide-bomber-for-Trump zombie horror strategy that has some people on our side freaking out. I think this summary is pretty much correct, and the end result of all the mindless obstructionism and opposition: the libtards are for it, therefore we’re agin it, and there is nothing that can be done.

The MAGAts don’t want to die, and are quite convinced that we’re going to up and die from the evil Gates Soros vaccine, but enough years of marinating in crazy-ass propaganda has degraded any ability they had to perceive reality until it is literally shoved down their throat.

Of course, us libtards WERE trying to help everyone, which our Breitbart buddies simply do not understand, because why would you possibly want to help your enemy. Therefore it must have been a grand trick. Clever, huh.

Really it’s the same scenario we’ve seen again and again: Millions of gullible morons and a small crowd of con men who are all too happy to fleece the lot of ‘em. And if it’s something that “those people” want them to have, then it’s gotta be suspect and you should avoid it in favor of “common sense solutions” that “those people” don’t want you taking.

Right, and as you say, the other piece of this is the complete lack of any adult supervision on the GOP side. This happens in other countries, too, when there is an authoritarian power but no firm hand at the top that can still perceive reality and stop the rush off the cliff.

All of the GOP “thought” leaders are competing for the same audience, and the only way they see to get power and money is to keep trying to out-crazy the others. There’s nothing to keep it in check, so it keeps spiraling out of control.

So, Google and Apple have rolled on to their backs and pissed themselves for the Putin government. They have censored lists of registered candidates for the ongoing Duma elections after being threated by police goons, pulled the smart voting app from the stores, and allowed the pro-government forces to upload a fake smart voting app. YouTube is taking down smart voting videos, while allowing RT and other pro-government propaganda mills to post whatever they feel like (and recommend them to me, yeah thanks).

Apparently Apple’s response has been to cite the Russian government’s crap about interference in elections and extremism. The smart voting resources are just lists of approved, registered candidates that would minimize the power of United Russia, the core Putinist rubber stamp. Looks like Family Guy won’t be on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim anymore.

It marks the end of an era. Family Guy and Futurama were pretty big deals for Adult Swim when they picked up both in 2003; I’m not sure if many people would have even heard of Adult Swim if they had never broadcast those two shows, and Family Guy in particular remained Adult Swim’s most-watched show for years, even after it was picked up again by Fox. But time’s gone on and Family Guy isn’t the juggernaut it once was, especially on Adult Swim, and now with Disney controlling Fox, it now reverts to Disney-owned channels and platforms.

Still, it was an important show to Adult Swim in its early years, and Adult Swim was important to Family Guy as well; its success on Adult Swim was one of the big reasons it didn’t remain cancelled by Fox for long.

I’d argue that Adult Swim was already a big deal when CN got the rights to Family Guy and Futurama, and it was getting put in front of the audience they’d failed to capture at Fox that helped revive them. But that’s probably because I remember Adult Swim from back when it was the place that a lot of us budding otakus of the early 2000s could catch unedited anime without waiting for it to come out in the US on DVDs or waiting all day for a fansub to download from Limewire.

If they think they can do stuff like this and not make less money—the only penalty they care about—they will do it.

I think there’s also a large difference between the powerful companies in a country like the US and a country like modern Russia. The joke-not-joke is that in America first you get money and then you get power; in Russia, first you get power and then you get money.

Companies like Facebook and Apple were started and grown by people with little political power or experience. They got very, very, very big, and despite whatever noises they made about commitment to freedom and blah blah they figured it wouldn’t get in the way of growth and profit. They started making political decisions where they didn’t understand their impacts, didn’t think they were important, and accordingly got infiltrated by political operators who did. Things only change, and temporarily, when it becomes a big enough legal or PR problem for them, and otherwise they retreat back into their mindless growth and profit metrics.

Russian companies are big and powerful, but are essentially parts of the Soviet economy chopped into pieces and divided among the political elite. They’re not simply tools of Putin, because sometimes Putin is a tool of them, but they’re political entities first who grab money and resources through political pressure. They would never bow to foreign carrots or sticks like the western tech giants would, because they are creatures of the Russian political elite. You can control their western operations through the courts, but they will kick and scream and use their power to coerce the western governments to stop you, and certainly won’t be put off by a cop wagging a nightstick at somebody.

ETA: Thinking about it some more, there are a few Russian companies that act more like western ones (Yandex and perhaps Telegram), as their industries didn’t exist when the Soviet Union fell and the security elite chopped up the country’s wealth. However, the Russian government doesn’t have any problem leaning on them when it wants something, since it could grab the company and jail its executives tomorrow if it wants (see Yukos, for example). Telegram and Yandex fell right in line with banning smart voting information.

China Evergrande Group (3333.hk) kicked off a process on Saturday to repay investors in its overdue investment products with discounted properties, Bloomberg News reported on Saturday.

Investors who opt for discounted real estate in lieu of cash can start contacting wealth managers for more details, the report said, citing a Wechat post by Evergrande’s wealth division.

Also, this - which is bananapants crazy:

When the troubled Chinese property giant Evergrande was starved for cash earlier this year, it turned to its own employees with a strong-arm pitch: Those who wanted to keep their bonuses would have to give Evergrande a short-term loan.

Some workers tapped their friends and family for money to lend to the company. Others borrowed from the bank. Then, this month, Evergrande suddenly stopped paying back the loans, which had been packaged as high-interest investments.

Now, hundreds of employees have joined panicked home buyers in demanding their money back from Evergrande, gathering outside the company’s offices across China to protest last week.

JFC. That should be a huge, blaring klaxon that you work for a company that’s fucked six ways from Sunday.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano is taking a nap finally, after 6 days of continual eruption.

But it poured a lot of lava into Geldingadalir valley in those six days. And it flowed south. The authorities had ordered a berm constructed on the southwest side of Geldingadalir way back in Spring, to keep the lava from spilling southwest towards the region which has a power plant and the town of Grindavik.

Let’s see how the berm did:

Well it looks like it held fine. But I noticed the big pile of now fresh basalt is higher than the berm just to the right. If this event goes on for many more months then they are going to need a bigger berm.

I know some people get all bent out of shape over lack of empathy or whatever, but: Anti-vaxxers / covid denyers getting absolutely wrecked by the virus will never stop being funny to me. I’m waiting to hear the news any day about a certain family member who thinks literally everything is “media hype” and nothing ever warrants concern. (Covid? Media hype. Trump/Russia? Media hype. Climate crisis? Media hype. Any natural disaster? Media hype. 9/11? Media hype. WWII? Media hype. The black plague? Media hype. I exaggerate, but not by much.)

The Ring camera finally ran the battery down enough last night that the solar panel kicked in this morning. Its current position, despite being behind a tree in the late morning and early afternoon, appears to be plenty adequate to keep the battery charged with exposure in the early morning and late afternoon. I’m pleased as punch with the setup, and I’ll look at doing some actual cable management before winter comes.

This one is in an inconvenient location to be regularly changing the battery, so some form of charging was pretty much mandatory. Also, the fact that I’m not expecting it to go off at all for long periods of time means that I’d likely forget about it after a while.

Adult Swim was known long before Family Guy. I actually wish they could bring back King of the Hill, which is probably gone for the same reason. There will be plenty of things to take its place. And I think American Dad is a better show, which still airs new episodes on Adult Swim.

Not only did they run FLCL, they funded the development of two more seasons. They also funded a second season of Big O. I dont think they’ve run Girls und Panzer, but I think they do worry a bit about licensing.

Also: reading about the problems over the pending crash of the Chinese Evergrande Group raised a question in my mind. Not the business stuff, that’s (sadly for the stakeholders) fairly obvious, but another one:
How/why does a Chinese property/investment corporation with a (apparently) purely-domestic business tag itself with a name like “Evergrande” - which sounds to me more like a Colorado sporting-goods chain - ??
How does one even render that in Mandarin?

Which was going to be the spin the moment they were denied something. And they were going to keep asking for this or that until such a denial happened. They know they have nothing and the sole purpose of the exercise is simply to raise “doubt” about the electoral process in general. Probably with the intention of legislating control of the results to themselves since the officials and equipment “cannot be trusted”.

“Coffee break is over!” is the punch line of a bad joke:

A fellow is sent to hell and given a choice of rooms to spend eternity in. The first one is people getting poked with hot iron rods, he takes a pass, the second is people being flailed alive, he shakes his head.

The third room is people standing knee-deep in shit, drinking coffee.

“Well, I guess I could get used to the smell, and I really like coffee, I’ll take this room.”

He is drinking his cup of coffee when a demon enters the room, cracks his whip and says “Coffee break is over for this millennium! Everybody get back to standing on your heads!”

Had dinner, inside, with two couples last night. One couple fully vaxxed, the other couple she’s vaxed and he’s not and they both just spent the last two weeks recovering from Covid (hers a breakthrough case). So now I get to wait and suggest we both get tested in four or five days (because we just were on an airplane - no reason to raise specific concerns about the couple).

She looked 100% (and said her breakthrough symptoms were worse than his). He acted 100% but wasn’t as blustery and ‘red-neck jolly’ as he normally acts. He also only finished about a third of his dinner, and he normally eats like a 30-something cowboy which is what he is. I asked if he would get the shot now and he said, ‘Hell no!’ and I changed the subject.

I was supposed to go salmon fishing with them today but begged off blaming a desire to catch up on work, but being on a boat for six hours with someone just coming off Covid wasn’t something I wanted to do.

The Oregon Trail Tropical Update.

The remnants of Hurricane Nicholas remain over Alabama, but as a cold front sweeps through the Great Plains starting today, the tropical rains will start being lifted out through Tennessee, becoming an elongated line from northern Kentucky to Detroit by day three, still with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Rain today will be 1-3”, with local amounts up to 6”.

NWS Weather Prediction Center Three-Day Overview

Elsewhere in the tropics:

Depression Seventeen has formed to the southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The system will become a tropical storm this evening, and is expected to track northwest over the next five days.

Depression Sixteen has become Tropical Storm Peter, in the southwest Atlantic. Peter is expected to track northwest for the next three days, before it curves to the northeast. It is too early to tell whether the tropical storm is a threat to Bermuda. Otherwise, the northern Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are expected to receive rain and high winds as the storm passes to the northeast, along with dangerous surf and rip tides.

Making it sound like that’s a bad thing.

For one thing, the money to be spent will not go for blowing up things, or for planes, ships and other equipment with no practical civilian use.

It will go for improving life for Americans

And as I recall, America’s economy really started to boom after the end of WW2.

What a time to be alive though - 200 years ago, it would’ve taken weeks for the information about the Cumbre Vieja eruption to reach the US. 100 years ago, we would’ve known the same day, thanks to telegraphy.

And now, we can watch it live.

re: #269 Patricia Kayden

Yes, that’s our plan. So why are you guys so dumb that you’re falling into our trap.

They trapped themselves.

Like any other religion, they confuse what they believe with who they are. They are trapped by their own faith, and you cannot reason them out of it; only they themselves can do that (at which point they are not a true conservative).

Their prelates have convinced them that only the elderly, weak, obese, or with medical preconditions will become seriously ill or die from the disease, that masks or vaccines are liberal attempts to control their freedom.

Coupled with the conservative condition of not believing something unless it happens to them personally, they cannot believe when another conservative who was a reality-denier comes down with Covid-19 and becomes seriously ill. Pleading from that person to get a vaccine or wear a mask is pigeon-holed into that person was weak, elderly, obese, or had medical preconditions; therefore they either deserve it, are lying, or are of no account.

And like every religion, there are plenty standing by to take their money, and those who tell them which sources of information are “reliable.”

Hence some conservatives hiding they’ve gotten vaccines, others with their dying breath insisting they cannot have Covid-19 at all, and others yet becoming violent zealots attacking anyone who questions their conservative religious faith by requiring masks or proof-of-vaccination.

A person existing in their space doing something that does not comport to their conservative religious view (a person wearing a mask or attempting to keep distance) is like any other religion such as Christianity or Islam vs. atheists. Most conservatives will ignore you, some will get belligerent, a small number will physically attack you (and you can’t tell the difference until they do it).

Conservatives invent language to describe those not of their faith to denigrate them, very much comparable to how other religions describe those not part of their club. (Mask becomes “face diaper,” following medical guidance becomes “living in fear”, following best medical practices becomes “virtue-signaling,” &c).

None of them want to die, but they cannot resolve the cognitive dissonance of their conservative religious faith with the reality of how the world works (there is a pandemic and it can kill anyone, trickle-down economics has never worked, liberals want to take their guns, &c). Therefore those who do not lash out seek instead spiritual enlightenment from their holy texts and prelates (Faceborg groups, wingnut blogs, FOX News Channel, &c).

There has been a lot of scaremongering over the possibility over a so-called mega-tsunami from La Palma should a major eruption occur.

Several geologic studies have been done since then, with the scientific consensus arriving at a possible-but-unlikely tsunami as high as 188m in the vicinity of La Palma, and other effects across the North Atlantic:

A 2008 paper looked into this very worst-case scenario, the most massive slide that could happen (though unlikely and probably impossible right now with the present day geology). They find wave heights in the range 10 to 188 meters in the Canary Isles themselves. But the waves interfere and dissipate as they head out into the Atlantic. They predict 40 meters height for some nearby island systems. For continents, the worst effects are in Northern Brazil (13.6 m), French Guyana (12.7 m), mid-US (9.6 m), Western Sahara (largest prediction at 37 meters) and Mauritania (9.7 m). This is not large enough to count as a megatsunami, with the highest prediction for Western Sahara comparable to the Japanese tsunami, so it would only be a megatsunami locally in the mid Atlantic.

Wikipedia’s editors are slow today, they don’t have the current eruption on the page for La Palma yet.
