There’s all kinds of supply-chain disruptions going on, worldwide. Just-in-time parts and ingredients aren’t in time, so manufacturers can’t manufacture. Ports everywhere have labor shortages, so loading and unloading is way behind schedule (more container ships than usually process in a month are parked offshore waiting their turn), trucking has labor shortages, warehouses have labor shortages, etc etc etc

The furnace people today delivered all the new heating equipment to be installed, and measured in the attic for installation of ductwork. They will be back the day after tomorrow to deliver ductwork they have to make. They also have to subcontract a carpenter because our attic entry is too small for the equipment, however, there will be no additional charge for that.
Meanwhile, we are entering year two with no heat in the winter.

Got my pleasant surprise of the day: After weeks of insisting he was going to file to retire as soon as DHS required all federal employees to get vaccinated, my Faux-watching dad today surprised the rest of the family by stating he was going to get the J&J vaccine.
He hasn’t said it aloud, but my mom remarked when we discussed it earlier today that it probably has to do with the reality that he needs at least another 1 to 1.5 years on-job before he can retire at the higher pension rate. Plus he does love his job, even if he hates the daily commute.
Road Trip 2021: Plague Survival Edition
We arrived in Billings on Saturday and met with my wife’s 97 year old uncle and his son on Sunday. My wife brought her violin on our trip because she wanted to play for her uncle, which he absolutely loved.
Her uncle served in the Army from 1942 through 1946, 87th Infantry, 912th Ordnance, Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company and drove a halftrack off of a LST at Utah Beach on the third day. He was in Antwerp when the Battle of the Bulge was launched by the Germans. He told us about freeing the slaves at the Solingen knife factory (“They were really happy to see us”) and showed us one of his ‘souvenirs’ from the Solingen factory.
Quite the artifact to look at and hold, that’s for darn sure! We’re now in Missoula, MT and heading to Spokane tomorrow for two days of visiting more family, including my wife’s 96 year old uncle there. Since the last picture was of a very nasty item from a very nasty regime during a very nasty time, how about ending this with a really cute picture of our new family member (who will be coming to his new home the second week of October)!
While we are enjoying the trip we are being very careful in our travels. Most everyone we have seen in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana are unmasked and out/about, so that explains the spreading sickness and deaths in those states. We were at a Subway in Billings yesterday and some really stupid parents brought a very sick child into the place. About 9-10 years, dry heavy cough and clearly having breathing issues. We stood on the other side of the place, masked and vaccinated, while waiting for our to-go order (no drive through). Heard a guy coughing his ass off at our hotel last night (through his door as we passed it during our stay), clearly very sick but still our traveling about.
Lots of “HIRING” signs on businesses everywhere we go but it seems few takers. Most businesses in small towns are not offering better wages, preferring to run understaffed and takeout only (for fast food businesses). Bigger towns are having the same problem but some businesses are offering better pay since there are more options for workers in those cities.

My speculation on Thursday has come to pass: On Worldometer, Florida has climbed above South Dakota and Connecticut to number 10 on the ranking of deaths per million. Its previous rate was 2,366; it’s now 2,416. It certainly seems that by next week this time Florida will ascend to number 9. DeSantis continues to be indifferent to the suffering in his state; he cares nothing about what happens to those who are poor or minorities. But he is not alone in this malicious negligence.
At the beginning of the pandemic when there was no guidance as to treatment, the Northeast states were the hardest hit by the disease; now it’s Republican states, states that are ignoring advice and allowing death and disease to run rampant.
Which is exactly what the experts predicted would happen as the initial outbreaks in large urban areas began to ebb due to mitigation measures while rural communities that spurned such began to suffer their own outbreaks. IOW, this was an entirely avoidable scenario that the GQP has deliberately chosen to subject their constituents to for no other reason than to “stick it to the Libs.”
The Washington Post Coronavirus Newsletter had this section regarding isolating when vaccinated, but testing positive.

Answer:
First, we are sorry to hear you experienced a breakthrough coronavirus infection.
People who become infected with the coronavirus can actually test positive for quite a while, which may be happening to you, but that does not mean they are still contagious to others. One expert said that although people who receive an initial positive test result should certainly assume they are infectious and act accordingly, they do not need a negative result after the recommended isolation period to determine they are no longer contagious. In fact, some people have continued to test positive for months after an infection with the coronavirus.
This is more likely to happen when using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which are the gold standard but are also very sensitive in detecting remnants of the coronavirus. The test is designed to look for evidence of viral RNA — the genetic material of the coronavirus — and the human body can shed viral RNA for a long time as it is getting rid of the virus, said Jennifer Nuzzo, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. But, she said, the test could be simply detecting fragments of RNA — not the whole, active virus, which would be required to infect other individuals.
“Just finding evidence that there’s viral RNA in your nose is not a great indication of whether you’re contagious,” she said.
There are other ways to try to assess whether the detected material is capable of transmission, such as taking a culture and trying to grow the virus in a lab. But, Nuzzo said, none of it is a perfect science.
That why some researchers are keener on antigen tests — the faster, sometimes less accurate tests that can be done at home. Nuzzo said the fact that these tests are less sensitive to smaller amounts of viral RNA that can be found in people who are no longer contagious, “may be a feature rather than a defect.” Also, she said, antigen tests can be repeated to confirm any negative test results.
All of that said, you should comply with testing and isolation guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For testing, the CDC recommends that people who develop potential symptoms get tested. Beyond that, those who are vaccinated should be tested three to five days after exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed coronavirus infection. Unvaccinated people should be tested after potential exposure, too, as well as after engaging in higher-risk activities such as traveling or attending crowded gatherings.
In terms of isolation, the CDC states that people who are symptomatic should isolate for 10 days after first experiencing symptoms and for 24 hours after they have been fever-free without using any fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen. Those who test positive but do not have any symptoms should isolate for 10 days after their initial positive test result.
The window in which people are most contagious is likely to be two or three days before and after symptoms appear, though scientists are still learning about this and other characteristics of the virus. Nuzzo said that based on what they know right now, once you have completed your isolation period, you can assume you are no longer spreading the virus, despite what your test results show.

My county is at 58.6% fully vaccinated with 64.9% with at least one dose. And my county is definitely upper tier in re: income, education, etc. The county directly to the south of me is the 7th wealthiest county in the U.S. (Pitkin, county seat Aspen) They have very similar numbers.

A referendum was passed some time ago requiring businesses in Anaheim which receive tax subsidies to pay $18.00 an hour, with which Disneyland is starting to comply.
However, since that referendum was passed, Anaheim gave Disneyland a huge tax subsidy to pay for a parking garage. The tax subsidy was paid for with a bond measure (never vote for unrestricted bonds), so the city is claiming since Disneyland is paying back the city over several decades, the parking garage people are not subject to the minimum wage passed in the city.
The suit, which was granted class action status in July, will determine whether $550 million contributed by Anaheim to construction of Disneyland’s Mickey and Friends garage constitutes a city subsidy. At the heart of the issue is whether Disney is taking a city subsidy because of the complicated way Anaheim is repaying municipal bonds it took out to pay for construction of the garage, which opened in 2000. The bonds are being repaid largely through taxes Disney pays and through hotel room taxes collected by the city as well. Randy Renick, the attorney who filed the class action suit, believes that repayment constitutes a city subsidy, since Disneyland keeps the revenue from the garage even though it was financed by the city.

Her uncle keeps his war trophies hidden and from what his son says, we are the first people he has brought the sword out for in over twenty years. From what was said, he has a lot more stuff (P08 Luger, Walther P38 and other items) and he keeps it in a safety deposit box. It’s clear that he views the items as war booty and he’s glad to have contributed to the defeat of Hitler and his NAZI forces. He told us a few other war stories, but about life as a US soldier in a time of war. He didn’t talk about the battles but rather his work keeping the war machines oiled and running.
One hell of a guy, like all of the guys who went over to fight. He joined up right out of high school and did his stint with pride. Nice guy and funny as hell. One sweetly sad bit of the visit is that he asked my wife to play her violin at his funeral, which she accepted without hesitation.
She told him that she’s not in a hurry to do it and he agreed he wasn’t in a hurry either.

It breaks down the percentages of Covid-19 and non-Covid beds which are occupied, and the percentages of ICU beds, along with percentage of beds which are staffed (we’re sucking in that department).
It’s done as a “guest account” so I can’t see if public heath officials and physicians have access to more data.

A Fort Dodge-based cooperative with several locations across North Iowa was struck by a ransomware attack and has shut down its computer systems as a result.
NEW Cooperative confirmed through a statement that it had been attacked and was working with law enforcement and security experts to mitigate the damage.
NEW Cooperative operates grain elevators in many parts of Iowa, buys crops from farmers, sells fertilizers and other chemicals for growing crops, and owns the tech platform SoilMap that helps farmers maximize the use of their land for optimum crop growth.
“New Cooperative recently identified a cybersecurity incident that is impacting some of our company’s devices and systems,” according to an earlier statement from the cooperative. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have proactively taken our systems offline to contain the threat, and we can confirm it has been successfully contained.”

Wildfires in Nebraska Panhandle are largely under control
Two aggressive wildfires that threatened to race away from firefighters in western Nebraska had largely been brought under control by Monday afternoon.
The Vista Trend fire southwest of Scottsbluff was 100% contained, and the Post fire near Crawford was 50% contained, said Alyssa Sanders of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.

Used to be, in the first decade of this century, when music was the canary in the coal mine for digital disruption, everyone was tuned into the business and when a player spoke they got heard.
Not anymore. You’re probably unaware of Hartwig Masuch’s words.
The big news of the past week has been about Universal Music going public. You may have seen the puff piece about Lucian Grainge in the “Financial Times”: on.ft.com It doesn’t really tell you anything you don’t know, and Lucian deserves kudos, but the question is where the business is heading, the fact that Universal dominates new music, is that as laudable as it seems?
You see all the money is in catalog. Turns out the classics of the past are much more valuable than the hits of today. With everything in recorded music history available on streaming sites new music has to compete with the old and the verdict is in, people favor the old, by a large margin, 70% to 30%. How much does it cost a record company to stream old music? Right now essentially nothing. You just put it up there and reap the rewards. Might that change in the future, when the business acknowledges the power of the past? Yes, in many cases labels would be better off promoting the old acts, Queen is light years more popular than any new act.
And Universal, as a result of consolidation, has the best catalog, so it is positioned well for the future, but when investors start looking at costs are they going to get pissed how much is spent on new product for so little return? And are we going to see the breakup of these companies, since catalog is so much more valuable than new material? And even if you break new material, will it be classic in the future, or is it one and done? A moment in time. That people in the future won’t be that eager to visit.
We’ve already seen the separation of publishing from recordings. Used to be big acts owned their own publishing and just made administration deals. But it turns out their catalogs were undervalued, and once Pimary Wave and Round Hill and Hipgnosis came along and offered big bucks, a multiple far outstripping previous prices, artists started to sell. And now so many of the greatest songs of all time are no longer controlled by the major label publishers. And Merck just started a songwriters guild… Bottom line, publishers are underpaid on streaming, because of the majors’ leverage. But that leverage is eroding, will there be a righting of the wrong? Furthermore, despite the big ticket purchase of Bob Dylan’s catalog by Universal and Paul Simon’s by Sony, the truth is these companies are now rearguard operations, they’re only dipping their toe while the new independent players are all in. In addition, the new players are putting far more effort, money and time, into their acquisitions. Most legacy publishers are about picking up the phone, the new ones are much more active.
And publishing is a predictable business. Why should it be tied up with a record company blowing all that money on new artists? You’re taking a steady income and jeopardizing it. Investors don’t like this.
There is so much institutional b.s. that needs to be corrected. Like executive salaries. Hartwig posits that a $10 million salary requires 2 billion streams just to pay for it. Actually, in truth the numbers are even worse.

Hennepin County, the most populous county in Minnesota, has vaccinated 75.3% of 12+, with 79.2% having at least one shot. The state overall is at 67.9% and 71.7%, respectively.

Manhattan is a special case, though. When last I knew, the daytime tourist and commuter load about doubled the resident population. Many are the well-vaxxed New Jersey traffic, but a lot are like the assholes from Texas.

We can only count residents, because they are a known number. That’s a baseline. We then have to push the vaccination rate down because of those who travel here who aren’t vaccinated, or up, if they’re coming and are vaccinated.
If you’re in the NYC metro area, you’re more likely to come to Manhattan and are already vaccinated. If you’re coming from outside NYC metro you’re less likely to come vaccinated, and that’s where those national mandates come in to play.
Thanks to the know nothing GOP, those who got vaccinated and are taking all the necessary precautions, may not get access to monoclonal antibodies because the state govt (GOPers) want to direct it to those who listened to right wing propagandists and refused to vaccinate/mask.

Wife missed the window for monoclonal, had to shop for a doc to test her at all. I got the bag of Good Stuff, was glad to get it. The effect is short, but claims to be very significant in preventing hospitalization (and it really knocked down the Day3/Day4 symptoms).

In part because time has essentially winnowed the 70-85% crap content of old music into the dumpster already. The marginal or outright bad acts are gone. The mediocre content put out by better acts is easily ignored, or missed by listening to compilation albums of their material. Which leaves a refined amount of what is essentially good material for current acts to compete with.
I purposefully do try to listen to full albums of older acts that I like. A lot of dross that I can see why the “hit” compilations ignored them. I also find songs, or albums, that I prefer to a group’s hit singles or records in any case. And for groups or artists that never seemed to put out an album that I liked enough of to purchase the various services will let me cherry pick individual songs if I want to spend the money.

The “Fall pollen much” has me wondering on/off if I am coming down with a case. Running low fever now and then. Congestion and cough, etc. etc.
New Hampshire was the shining star of vaccination in late spring early summer, but now we’re dead last in New England. The anti-vax people are unmoved. They show up to picket the (R) Governor’s home, they flood community FB pages with disinformation, they whine about “my body, my choice,” and they are well represented in state government.
Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC) denounced the Horry County Republican Party’s promotion of ivermectin, an anti-parasitic drug, to treat Covid-19, the Columbia State reports.
Said Rice: “That the leaders of the Horry County Republican Party believe it is appropriate to advocate for medical treatment for any illness is simply insane. Especially in the middle of a plague, and in opposition to the guidance of the Center for Disease Control, the National Institute of Health, and 95% of the Physicians in the country.”
He added: “Folks, talk to your doctor if you want medical advice.”

No major organized religions prohibit vaccinations. They’re substituting “belief” for religion, and trying to avoid vaccination mandates that way.
But these same people have also gotten vaccines in past - so the problem isn’t vaccinations, but their political worldview overriding all else.
Fox has pushed their misinformed masses into believing that vaccinations are bad, and it’s killing their base.
And Fox and the GOP don’t care how many die, because they’re not losing enough people to the pandemic to change the political landscape. Or, they think that these deaths actually reflect badly on Biden, not the GOP that perpetrated this disinformation campaign.

Oh, I dunno. Seems pretty clearly to be a song about the first moon landing, still in the headlines at the time. (song came out in 1969)
The lyrics are a love letter to the moon, from the point of view of someone who Just Knows (tm) now that humans have started exploring the moon, the obvious next steps (if history repeats itself) are that we’ll exploit, colonize, pollute, and ruin it.
The protest-song politics of a bunch of those “acid rock” cats sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. But Canned Heat (and a few others) never lost their connection to Woody Guthrie.

Felipe Gomez of Illinois filed his suit as a “Pro-Choice plaintiff” seeking to get the law declared unconstitutional. Oscar Stilley, who describes himself in his complaint as a “disbarred and disgraced former Arkansas lawyer” on home confinement for “utterly fraudulent federal charges,” wants that $10,000.
“If this is a free-for-all, and it’s $10,000, I want my $10,000,” he told The New York Times. “And yes, I do aim to collect.”This is just a tiny fraction of the circus Texas Republicans invited with this law, but they’re somehow surprised and unhappy about it.
According to the legislative director of Texas Right to Life, which lobbied for the bounty hunter law, “Neither of these lawsuits are valid attempts to save innocent human lives.” You don’t say! Instead, he continued, “Both cases are self-serving legal stunts, abusing the cause of action created in the Texas Heartbeat Act for their own purposes.”

The geniuses over at Texas Right to Life also “believe Braid published his Op-Ed intending to attract imprudent lawsuits.” Again: You don’t say! What tipped them off? Was it the part where he said in a major newspaper that he had broken a law that requires someone harmed by it to challenge its constitutionality in court? In the same op-ed, he wrote, “I understand that by providing an abortion beyond the new legal limit, I am taking a personal risk, but it’s something I believe in strongly. Represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights, my clinics are among the plaintiffs in an ongoing federal lawsuit to stop S.B. 8.”

I thought the legal implication of a presidential pardon was that by accepting the pardon, it was an admission of guilt. I know it has something to do with not being able to plead the Fifth Amendment regarding the matter for which you were pardoned, because that’s been talked about with some of TFG’s “pre-emptive pardons” of his higher-level minions and if they get subpoenaed to testify in the ongoing investigations and court cases.

The numbers of GOP voters dying is starting to matter. For awhile, their deaths were inconsequential to the ballot box, but that is changing as the graves fill. I never thought it could get to the point where the disinformation would negatively effect them at the polls.
An interesting article on the “Santa Claus” theory of modern US elections, the proponent of that, the phrase “supply-side economics,” and why Republicans keep getting away with spending, cutting taxes, and accusing Democrats of being spenders. The numbers of GOP voters dying is starting to matter. For awhile, their deaths were inconsequential to the ballot box, but that is changing as the graves fill.

The total toll on voters is going to heavily skew Republican:
i) The death rate is higher in older people, and older people are a lot more likely to vote Republican.
ii) Unvaccinated people are at least 100 times more likely to die from infection than vaccinated. Although there are unvaccinated Democrats, a population that voted Democrat is likely to have a higher vaccination rate, and so there will be less community spread, and there will be less deaths per number infected. In Republican areas, where there are more people unvaccinated, there will be a higher level of community transmission, higher deaths per infection, and the hospitals in those areas are more likely to be overwhelmed.
iii) People who refuse to wear masks are assholes, and assholes tend to vote Republican. Not wearing a mask means you’re way more likely to be infected or infect others. Again, this is going to result in higher community transmission in Republican areas than Democratic ones, as well as individual Republican voters more likely to be infected, even those who live in areas that vote Democratic.
There’s also going to be a big factor of a Republican voter who knows someone close to them who dies of Covid-19, or who gets it and recovers slowly are less likely to vote Republican at the next election.
But I think this means Republicans are only going to double-down on their derp. Until they lose power, they are not going to change course, and so for now, keeping their base energised with hate is still the best strategy for the short term.

It’s not just the 650 000 plus Americans who have died driving this. The worldwide labor force has lost millions of people since the start of the pandemic. Not to mention coronavirus related actions have in some instances greatly restricted the movement of people (specifically immigrants who would do many of the low wage jobs that businesses are now desperate to find workers for).
Not to mention some people are still leery about working in high exposure jobs fields, especially in those countries where vaccination rates are low.
I don’t see much of this changing for at least another couple of years at the earliest. Welcome to the new normal.

I was reading that the backlogs at Ports of LA/Long Beach were due in part to rail supply chain/logistics issues as far away as Chicago. Getting materials moved around the nation are running into backlogs and logjams that have ripple effect all across the globe.
If there’s no capacity in Chicago to absorb new TEUs, it backs up TEUs all the way back out to Los Angeles. Rail logistics folks are running into all kinds of problems, not only in getting cars to move content around to last mile challenges.
The wild swings in availability and materials being shipped is causing even more problems.

Generally speaking, if a death occurs on or near a planet, the deceased will be buried on that planet or (sometimes if human) be held in the morgue on the ship until the body can be returned to earth, though it’s usually the former.
If a death occurs in a region nowhere near a planet, the torpedo tube coffin is the traditional option (which makes sense as there is literally nowhere to bury someone in deep space).
Also fair to assume cremations are still a thing in the Trekverse but I’m not sure we’ve ever seen one on screen.

I keep writing about this subject, to the point of tedium — though I promise this will be my last such column for a while — because I think this right-left flip, this sudden-seeming role reversal, offers some sort of key to the derangements of our time.
Maybe the key is the absolute power of partisanship and polarization, in which once Donald Trump chose Covid-minimizing rhetoric, everybody else just rushed into their places.
Maybe the key lies in the left’s increasing sense of itself as occupying the seat of power and the right’s sense of its marginalization — which naturally changes the way each side reacts to the use of authority in a crisis and the interest with which each side reads Foucault.
Or maybe the key, as I suggested last week, is all about interests and in-groups and the way the Covid lockdowns affected right-leaning and left-leaning demographics differently — which is why the right briefly favored restrictions when they seemed likely to fall mainly on foreigners and the left briefly suspended its zeal for restrictions when the transgressors were left-wing protesters instead of anti-mask Republicans.
Or maybe Covid has just stripped away all the ideological scaffolding built atop our warring factions and returned us to some sort of Puritans-versus-Jacksonians dynamic from our country’s distant past.
Whatever the explanation, in the short run I think the bare acknowledgment that this weird flip took place might help a little with our polarization — tempering the liberal sense that the right is just a pro-Covid death cult and the right’s sense that the left wants us all to mask up and eat Soylent in our disease-free habitats forever.

agree, its like there are really no wrong answers here and there are multiple artists who evolved over time, some more successfully than others.
I mean take a look at someone like Elton John for instance and the evolution of his form… you see it in other artists as well, from Prince and Michael Jackson to other bands like U2 or ELO, where they refined their sound and expanded their subject matter or kept on the same thread in regards to their songwriting approach, but introduced and applied the melody differently. Others like Charles, dabbled in genre’s, finding expression and different voices in the changing constraints of the style, say like Elvis Costello. Latest numbers suggest we’ve lost around 200 000 folks of working age (18-65) to the pandemic.
But beyond this, what about people who survive but are stuck with long covid? Or who do mostly recover but are still unable to do their previous jobs for various reasons?

Not to be ageist, but over 500000 of those were over 65 and likely already out of the labor force. Covid is certainly responsible but not just due to direct deaths.
A good chunk of the workforce depends on those retirees for childcare. I once saw an airborne division commander’s eyes get big when he discovered he didn’t have enough grandmothers in his “hidden” deployment plan.

But beyond this, what about people who survive but are stuck with long covid? Or who do mostly recover but are still unable to do their previous jobs for various reasons?
Death is only one reason people fall out of the labor force.
By itself, 200,000 isn’t that big a number nationally distributed. But regional pockets of that number would be potentially far more significant and impactful, especially if the deaths were disproportionately weighted to a specific corner of the workforce.

I was going to say, with a large number of the deaths in the workforce age probably coming recently, amongst the onslaught of Delta against the unvaccinated, that would disproportionately target workers in the South and those who are in industries with a lot of human contact, which would also line up with the slower-than-expected return of the hospitality industries.

Even in the Bay Area, where hospitality/food service workers are pretty well paid, finding people has been difficult. My wife was lucky in that over 90% of the 1200 or so people she had to furlough and eventually lay off during the first year of Covid came back.

I’m under the impression that they’re unwilling to return. It feels somewhat like a general strike to me. Who wants to deal with the public when the public is the craziest they’ve been in my lifetime? For those who have avoided infection, risking it for a shitty job probably doesn’t seem like a good idea anymore either.

If a death occurs in a region nowhere near a planet, the torpedo tube coffin is the traditional option (which makes sense as there is literally nowhere to bury someone in deep space).
Also fair to assume cremations are still a thing in the Trekverse but I’m not sure we’ve ever seen one on screen.

Two men have been arrested in New Zealand for allegedly attempting to bring a “large amount” of illicit KFC into Auckland, where a lockdown has forced all fast-food outlets to shut their doors. According to The Guardian, the men were attempting to speed away with a trunk full of chicken and coleslaw when they were pulled over by police. Cops said they found at least three buckets of chicken, 10 tubs of coleslaw, and a big stash of fries on the side. Police also found $100,000 in cash and a number of empty ounce bags. Cops posted a photo of the delicious evidence, and a spokesperson said: “The vehicle was searched and police located the cash, alongside empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways.” The Guardian reports that the men are expected in court for breaching COVID rules and could face prison for up to six months or a fine of up to $4,000.
They should be locked up for failing to get some illicit biscuits!

I wonder if there is a factor in that the considerate and polite patrons are the ones staying home and avoiding restaurants*. So the “Karen Factor” of restaurant patrons is much higher in addition to other things like people making limited excursions out having higher desires or expectations for the experience or simply reacting more negatively due to stress from the pandemic.
