I use FB solely for the social function

Not as a source of any sort of news beyond where my homies are hanging or what my family is up to on vacation or sharing recipes, pet & cat videos/pics and recipes.

pretty much the same, there are some groups that I have joined that satisfy my own niche interests but I go elsewhere for my politics, I figure I can deal with the targeted ads because at least they are somewhat related to what I already like.

It’s awesome to be able to tell old acquaintances happy birthday or follow on what they are currently doing, but outside of that its all a big NOPE.

A while back I remember seeing a post on my then-GF’s thread “Great Barrier Reef Declared Dead.”

Even a very cursory reading of the article indicated that was far from the case: the reef had suffered serious damage of up to 20% but was stable and even recovering.

That really made me realize what a totally useless source of information FB was for anything outside friends, family, upcoming gigs and local events.

Media Fascination With The Petito Mystery Looks Like Racism To Some Native Americans

The FBI has confirmed that remains found in Wyoming Sunday are the body of 22-year-old Gabrielle Petito. The mystery around the death of the photogenic young white woman with a carefree social media presence has been headline news across the country.

And that’s frustrating to people who say the media ignores an epidemic of missing and murdered Native American women in the state.

Since 2000, Indigenous people have made up 21% of homicides in Wyoming, even though they are only 3% of the population. That’s according to a state report released in January.

Cara Chambers, chair of the task force that released the report says only 30% of Indigenous homicide victims had any media coverage. That number is closer to 51% for whites.

I get that she has a slight level of celebrity but those numbers are why the way this story has been covered disgusts me.

That reminds me of a story from the olden days. A white girl’s father died, and then it turned out her mother was a light skinned slave, so of course she was a slave as well, so the estate put her up for sale at an auction. A New Orleans brothel wanted to buy her, and people were horrified that a white girl might be forced into sexual slavery, so they raised money to outbid the brothel and free her, never giving a thought to the fact its just as horrifying that black girls were being sold into sexual slavery.

A member of the Well Regulated Militia™ strikes again.

When I was a child in Colorado (ca. 1960), the antics of out-of-state hunters were something of a running joke, albeit a grim one, among the locals. There were usually several fatalities every season, along with all kinds of other stupid stuff. In those days, hunters actually did strap their kills to the hoods of their cars, exposed to dust, wind, bugs and the eyes of deer-loving children, all the way home. Our neighbor, Art, said he wouldn’t be surprised if one of them showed up with another hunter tied to his hood. One guy did show up at an inspection station with a dead burro on his hood. He was arrested and swore to high heaven that he thought it was a deer.
These long-ago observations are at least part of the reason I don’t let strangers hunt feral hogs on my land. Going after a dangerous animal like a hog rather than harmless deer would probably magnify their stupidity by an order of magnitude at least.

My next-door-neighbor and best friend growing up got shot in the ass by a careless hunter once, when we were teenagers. Guy wasn’t checking downrange, fired at a bird, his shot fell and sprayed my buddy right across the backside. He turned around and marched back uphill and gave him what for, and thankfully the altercation ended relatively peacefully - aka, no further shots were fired.

I wouldn’t mind going hunting, myself, but it would be more of a “commune with nature” type of trip, kinda like fishing is. I’m not depending on bringing home a deer for my family to eat, no sir. They already depend on me to bring home the bacon as it is.

Growing up in rural mountainous Colorado, the opportunity to go hunting will arise whether you like it or not.

I’ve field dressed deer, elk, and a black bear. It’s a lot of work, especially if you kill the animal far from your camp, and can take up to two days to get the animal from the field to the back of your pickup truck. That’s just big game. Duck and grouse were always favorites, I’ve shot lots of those.

That said, I have not gone hunting in over 15 years. I get offers to go on trips every fall.

76
teleskiguy  Sep 21, 2021 • 6:12:49pm

Out of all the big game I’ve hunted or helped hunt (I didn’t shoot the bear) the bear was the most delicious. The back strap meat was among the best steaks I’ve ever had. Elk is really good too, I like elk ground beef. Deer is okay, a little gamey for my taste. Never had moose.

Moose is absolutely the best wild game meat. I’ve successfully hunted moose, mule deer, elk, and antelope. Antelope has very gamey flavor. We would make sausage to hide the flavor.

Funny that I moved to Alaska 20 years ago and have not taken any advantage of the hunting opportunities. Just got older. Even for residents the big game hunting trips are big safaris involving small plane flights or small boats getting to good hunting areas. And, once you’re 65, you get a lifetime hunting and fishing license for free.

To quote the great Tom Lehrer:

I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow,
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.
……..

The law was very firm, it
Took away my permit,
The worst punishment I ever endured.
It turned out there was a reason,
Cows were out of season,

Suddenly I’m reminded of a time I went into an small neighborhood bar near my home near Nara Japan. I saw they were closing and started to leave, but the owner told me to stay, and then a couple of his friends showed up. He put on some jazz and we drank and talked. But by the end he got a bit maudlin and started talking about how his mom was participating in a “mochi-pounding” event as part of a festival. His mom was tasked with moving the rice around in the big wooden bowl while others smashed the rice with a huge wooden mallet. He said that his mom leaned into the downward stroke of the mallet and it rendered her severely disabled. It was then that most of us took our leave.

Fuckhead has file a lawsuit against his niece

Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against The New York Times, three of its reporters, and his niece—claiming they hatched an “insidious plot” to obtain his private records for a story about his tax history.

The lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in Dutchess County, New York, alleges that the newspaper convinced Mary Trump to “smuggle records out of her attorney’s office and turn them over to The Times” despite her having signed a confidentiality agreement. The suit demands damages “in an amount to be determined at trial, but believed to be no less than One Hundred Million Dollars ” from both Mary Trump, and the Times.

“I think he is a fucking loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can,” said Mary Trump. “It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”

The Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the suit.

This is a developing story…

The New York Times probably gets hit with bigger suits than Trump’s several times a week: and the paper probably has even more lawyers on hand than Donald (likely it helps that the NYT actually pays their attorneys). This suit is probably going to go where most of Trump’s BFD legal efforts go, I.e. nowhere.

“This is the big announcement, everyone,” Lindell told Steve Bannon. “I made a promise to this country that with all the evidence I have that we would get it to the Supreme Court and I predicted they would vote 9-0 to look at the evidence.”

“Originally I had hoped for August and September,” he continued. “I asked all the lawyers just yesterday. We are taking this case to the Supreme Court before Thanksgiving. Now maybe Fox will report that today. You heard it here first because our case is ready. We are bringing it to the Supreme Court before Thanksgiving.” …

This kind of made sense to me in that elk makes a great ground meat, but if you use it to make things like chili or taco meat, it’s best to put a little ground beef in it to have a little fat in it. Dude’s step mom made fantastic elk chili, but it always had a little bit of ground beef added. Texture, binding, etc.

Most butchers who processed deer for venison when I hunted in Pennsylvania usually gave you an option to have ground pork added to your ground venison for the same reason.

Since I used my ground venison solely to make chili* or something else with just loose meat I never had the pork added. My usual processing option was steaks and the rest ground. The backstrap was always packaged separately as well.

Last time I went deer hunting was about 15 years ago. On a tract along the Rappahannock River.

Two other guys were also hunting there. Good old boys from past the Shenandoah Valley. It wasn’t a problem because they went down to the swamp and shot a 6pt buck right at dawn. The parking spot for the cars was maybe 1.5 miles from the swamp. When I left about 5pm, they still had not yet made it back to the cars with the deer.

Seeing all the trouble they were having, I decided to not bother trying to actually shoot a deer.

I got to watch some fox kits playing, a flock of turkeys and a bunch of deer running at full speed towards the swamp. I called up a nice buck, and later jumped him several times, but had no interest in actually having to kill, drag it to my car, dress, butcher and freeze him.

And also got to talk with an older local who reminisced being a child and taking the water taxi on the Rappahanock River.

Anyway, I have a lifetime Virginia hunting license but have not bothered to use it for the last decade and a half. Laziness and the grocery store have won out.

Currently, my goal is to not be one of the several thousand drivers that manages to catch a deer in Fairfax County with his car during mating season.

re: #116 ckkatz

Yep, that is not a fun job dragging a pile of meat out of the forest. That’s one reason I’ve helped fellow hunters in our group dress out kills and/or drag them out.

Longest distance I’ve had to drag one is about 1/2 a mile. And that included getting it across a creek over a narrow (3’ wide) bridge with no side rails. Mostly downhill though in that case.

Shortest was about 50 yards out of a gully to a point that we were driving pickup trucks to park.

Heard stories from my friend about his father taking five or more hours to get a deer out of the swampy terrain he preferred to hunt in solo in that area.

We hunted in an area that was remediated strip mine in south central PA in the rough area of Tyrone, PA. Lots of up and down due to the spill piles, some open meadows that eventually filled in with pine and locust. Plus a swamp in one area that a creek flowed out of. The last was a favorite hangout for the deer of course. A bunch of the area was later made state game land and banned to vehicles. (Though the locals still take four wheelers around the blockages on the old access roads.)

It’s like most Trump litigation: If he’s the one suing, then odds are it’s because he’s desperate for money and is counting on the defense to pay him to just go away.

re: #121 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

The worst kills to recover that I have seen were bears. They are just very hard to drag/carry/move.

The shortest deer drag that I have seen was up in the Northwest Pa State Gamelands. The guy had a cabin right next to the Gamelands. In his back yard was a short game trail to a natural saltlick. Maybe 100 feet.

I don’t remember which county as this was 50 years ago.

Back in the 1960’s and 1970’s though, after the opening day of hunting season, the deer had figured out what was going on and changed their behavior.

One more hunting story.

After World War 2, my father, an American Army officer, was in the United States Army of Occupation, Occupied Germany.

He was invited to go on a boar hunt. The guy running the hunt, the gamekeeper for a local noble literally had the local peasantry beat/drive the boars to the hunters.

The hunters were stationed at the base of trees with low hanging branches. The hunters had instructions to quickly get up the tree if they missed and the boar Came at them. The boars were large (as was expected in a noble’s private hunting preserve) with extremely large and sharp teeth.

Another of my father’s jobs during that period was to keep visiting congressional delegations both happy and out of the commanding general’s hair. So my father would arrange trips to the local wine producing schlösser and get the congressmen sloshed. Win-win!

IIRC, if you get a elk permit in PA (very limited number, like 100, given out by lottery) you also have to have a team with you for carrying out the meat if you get one.

The moose I ate some of had been bagged in Canada and the hunter, who was there, said that he had a guide and a bunch of carriers along since they packed out something like 500 lbs of meat.
