Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) is disputing claims by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell that cybercriminals “flipped” 100,000 votes in Alabama from Donald Trump to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, al.com reports.

Said Merrill: “All our machines are custom-built. There’s no modem component. You can’t influence them through a cell phone or a landline. There’s no way they can be probed or numbers manipulated.”

I saw that she was trending with George Floyd early this morning on Twitter, which I can only assume means that the flying monkeys were out in force as the bill crashed and burned, demanding justice for a terrorist who was lawfully shot in commission of a crime, unlike Floyd.

Long thread on a US House race that normally doesn’t get much attention: Wyoming At-Large.

The race is always a lock for the GOP, so it gets little attention outside the local area.

However, Rep. Cheney now has a Trump-endorsed opponent, Harriet Hageman, who is an attorney who sat on the GOP National Committee.

Rep. Cheney has been censured by the Wyoming GOP, and two county GOP committees have thrown her out of the party.

What this is all about, and now derailing the gerrymandering legislation, is this staffer in 2018 wanted to know where in the Capitol building there was for staffers to pump breast milk.

Turns out (surprise) there was no place.

She approached Democratic senator Cavanaugh, who raised $40,000 from donations around the state to build such a room.

That was done.

This summer, the GOP leadership said (by text) “sorry ladies, you don’t get this room, it goes to a male GOP staffer.”

Essentially, the GOP stole $40,000 for an office.

Blair White challenged her to a shooting competition to prove liberals can’t do squat with guns. Jacklyn Glenn had never fired a gun in her life.

The agreed upon firearm would be a semi-automatic pistol, and they went to an indoor gun range for the competition.

Blair White has giant -uh- tracts of land, so the men in the place were fawning all over her (she passes very well). Jacklyn Glenn doesn’t get such fawning attention, but spent her time paying attention to the rangemaster on how to safely fire a gun, how to aim, &c.

Comes the target shooting, Ms. White didn’t even hit the target, while Ms. Glenn blew the centre out of it and didn’t miss once.

That pretty much deflated Ms. White’s “liberals are afraid of guns” talking point.

Your story makes some excellent points.

And what you say matches my experiences.

A lot of ladies do very well when shooting, because they actually listen to the experts and actually try to follow the advice they are given.

The guys who assume that they already know it all, and do not listen or follow advice, tend to make the mistakes that the experts were suggesting avoiding. And, apparently, transitioning did not correct that attitude in this case.

Memories of Mom insisting that she had to have…BACON in her Caesar salad!

My aunt used to make a fresh spinach leaf salad, which I loved. And my parents were always pleased to see me asking for seconds of green vegetables.

At some point, I asked her for the recipe: the dressing consists of a half package of bacon, fry it, put bacon aside, reserve the grease. Add a half cup of sugar and a half cut of mayonnaise.

No wonder I loved the stuff…

all the remembrances I see online reference his role on Sex & the City (which I’ve never seen an episode of).

More on the move to add insects to our sources of protein:

“Insects have a lot more value than just being a protein,” says Mr Smorenberg, pointing out that what are known as antimicrobial peptides in the fly larvae help to improve gut health.

“And there’s no other crop in the world that can give you 52 harvests a year from one space.”

…snip…

From this point the flies’ larvae can go one of several ways.

Many are dried out and exported whole to feed pet chickens in the US. Others are effectively minced into a rough powder which will be used by a Norwegian firm to make dog food. Others still are pressed for their oils, or hydrolysed into a liquid digest.

The South African farm turning flies into food for pets - and maybe people
bbc.com

A couple of years ago, Anne Carlson — the founder of Jiminy’s, a dog food start-up — conducted a taste test with her dog, Timber.

She filled half of his bowl with the meat-based food the Great Dane was used to eating, and she filled the other half with Jiminy’s Cricket Crave, a kibble made from cricket powder, oats, quinoa, sweet potato and other plant-based ingredients. Then she stood back as he dug in.

Timber’s response was miraculous: He sniffed his options, then devoured the Cricket Crave and licked his lips contentedly, leaving the other side untouched.

“It was one of those moments when you’re like, ‘Oh, this is so good,’ ” Carlson said. This summer, Petco stocked shelves in 800 stores with Jiminy’s dog food. Along with the surprise of seeing pets wolf down insects, Carlson says customers often tell her, “I didn’t even realize I could be fighting climate change with my dog.”

Pets can help fight climate change with an insect-based diet. Owners just need to come around to the idea.

At some point a natural and/or man-made disaster will create famine and people will be happy to get nutrition in any form, even insects.

But that is pretty much what it will take to get us to start eating them.

Ron DeSantis’ New Surgeon General Appeared in ‘Demon Sperm’ Doctor’s COVID Conspiracy Video

Joseph Ladapo—the doctor appointed on Tuesday as Florida’s new surgeon general by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis—once appeared in a COVID-19 conspiracy video featuring Dr. Stella Immanuel. Immanuel, a pediatrician and religious minister, gained notoriety in 2020 for her bizarre theories, including that “demonic seed” causes endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

In July 2020, Ladapo appeared in a 43-minute viral video as part of a group called America’s Frontline Doctors. None of the doctors in the video were epidemiologists or immunologists best qualified to speak on infectious diseases, Rolling Stone reported at the time. The doctors’ recorded speech was organized by the Tea Party Patriots, a right-wing group backed by wealthy Republican donors.

The video promoted hydroxychloroquine as a “cure” for COVID-19, even though studies haven’t substantiated that claim. The video also said that masks do not slow the virus’ spread and that COVID-19 is less deadly than the flu. Both claims are untrue.

At some point a natural and/or man-made disaster will create famine and people will be happy to get nutrition in any form, even insects.

But that is pretty much what it will take to get us to start eating them.

According to this gofundme Jaysen has died from COVID. Jaysen was deep into fantasy, he was deep into revelations, and he was deep into Qanon. It was all about good vs evil. The thing about putting everything in terms of good vs evil is that it hides the nuances needed for rationality and humanity.

Asthma group warns against inhaling hydrogen peroxide to treat COVID-19 (The Hill, September 22, 2021)

I suppose there’s some advantage in bleach-blonde nose hairs?

An asthma organization warned against participating in a social media trend that suggests people can treat or prevent COVID-19 by inhaling hydrogen peroxide through a nebulizer.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) said the trend was “concerning and dangerous,” according to a blog post on its website.

“DO NOT put hydrogen peroxide into your nebulizer and breathe it in,” the AAFA’s blog said. “This is dangerous!”

This is one of many at-home COVID-19 treatments that medical experts have attempted to debunk amid online misinformation spread during the pandemic, The Washington Post noted.

Hydrogen peroxide, which can be poisonous for humans, is often used to prevent infection from minor cuts, burns and scrapes, The Post said. It does not treat or prevent COVID-19, according to the AAFA.

“Only use asthma medicine prescribed by your doctor in your nebulizer. Other chemicals can be harmful to your lungs,” the AAFA added.

Josh at TPM notes that Natasha Sinema is facing a toilet flush back home.

Yep. Sinema’s Cratering Back Home

talkingpointsmemo.com

How do the actual numbers at home add up for Sinema? I looked. They’re terrible! Honestly substantially worse than I thought. This mid-July poll from Data for Progress tells the story. Among Arizona Dems Joe Biden had a 94% approval rating; Mark Kelly had an 85% approval and Sinema had a 54% approval. Within your own party that’s a really, really bad number. And how did she fair with independents? She actually came in behind Biden (44%) and Kelly (45%), though not by much. Sinema was at 40%. When Arizona Democratic primary voters (who can be Dems or independents) were given the options of “I would vote to reelect Kyrsten Sinema” or “I would vote for a different candidate who would get rid of the filibuster” the numbers were basically catastrophic. Sinema got 22% and the unnamed filibuster-buster got 66%.

Problem is we’re stuck with Natasha Sinema until 2024…

My aunt used to make a fresh spinach leaf salad, which I loved. And my parents were always pleased to see me asking for seconds of green vegetables.

At some point, I asked her for the recipe: the dressing consists of a half package of bacon, fry it, put bacon aside, reserve the grease. Add a half cup of sugar and a half cut of mayonnaise.

No wonder I loved the stuff…

My father made the best potato pancakes in town. Everybody loved them. His best friend loaned him $10k w/o interest…just 2 conditions: 1. Rent him a bedroom in our home for $6 per week (this was during the big WW 1942 when rents were hard to find) and 2. Make him potato pancakes once a month which dad did until the debt was paid. Even before the war anytime bacon was fried the grease was consigned to a used Crisco can. Dad fried his potato pancakes in pure bacon grease, browned and crispy on the outside and heaven on the inside.

Not sure.
For all the (rather theatrical) diplomatic flouncing around about the Australian submarine deal, the flap has raised serious questions about French interests and priorities in the South Pacific. And how they are (or aren’t) going to be involved in ongoing regional security issues.
TBH, I think it would probably be/have been a better idea to get the French inside pissing out, rather than vice-versa, but then, I’m not SoS….

The afternoon tropical update shows that former tropical storm Odette now has a 60% chance of reforming into a tropical cyclone, while the tropical wave in the central tropical Atlantic is now Tropical Depression Eighteen.

Eighteen is expected to become a major hurricane within five days. The National Hurricane Center’s predicted track carries it north of the Lesser Antilles.

Depression Peter is expected to be post-tropical in twelve hours, and Depression Rose is expected to be post-tropical in twenty-four hours.

No No No. You can’t inject bleach.

What you have to do is put bleach into a bowl and then add ammonia. Breath heavily to allow the solution to kill all the virus in your nose, mouth and airways.

From wikipedia:

In August 2021, a review of online activity on Gettr by Politico found that the platform “is inundated with terrorist propaganda spread by supporters of Islamic State”.[13] Also in August, a study published by the Stanford Internet Observatory found that Gettr has “very few — if any — mechanisms for detecting spam, violent content, pornography, and child exploitation imagery” and that “Gettr appears to rely entirely on community reporting mechanisms to find sensitive content and illegal child-related imagery”.[34] The study found sixteen examples of images on Gettr that were flagged by PhotoDNA, an image-identification technology, as “child exploitation imagery”

Maybe it’s because I grew up at the tail end of GenX when most safety precautions were still more suggestions than requirements, but I do sometimes feel bad for kids these days…

Some fond and not so fond memories as a kid:

Seat belts being option, especially on long car rides. No helmets when riding bikes. Riding in the bed of a pick up truck. My orthodontist/dentist/doctor not wearing gloves and just washing hands between patients. Not wearing life jackets on boats.

I had a more pro-active family as a tail-end Baby Boomer.

Seat belts mandatory. Bike helmets pretty much weren’t available though. My uncle was the only person in the family who owned a pick-up truck and no one was allowed to ride in the back even a short distance. Doctors not wearing gloves seemed to be the standard of care at the time, not so much that doctors were ignoring safety precautions.

I mostly skied without a helmet into my 20s. Then one day in 2009 I took a tumble down a section called High Life in Crested Butte, looked a lot like the picture in this post (random pic I found via Google, not me in the pic). It was a head-over-heels tumble, not pretty. My friends were like “Are you okay?” I was, just shaken. My friend Matt then said “We’re going to the shop right now and getting you a fuckin’ helmet.” I got a pretty sweet Burton Red helmet with built-in headphones. I still have it somewhere. Matt put up $50 of his own money so I could buy it.

AIDS transmission was the driving thing behind the medical services wearing gloves from what I recall.

To a degree, yes. Like COVID, transmission vectors were not well understood during the initial spike in AIDS infections. One of Eddie Murphy’s early comedy routines had him joking about kissing someone and “bringing that AIDS shit home on your lips”

Earned my nursing diploma in 92, right as the hysteria started peaking. I was gloved, masked, and sported a facial shield in my first contact with an AIDS patient. As we came to understand it was blood-borne, the shields and masks went away (unless the patient was sick from secondary infections). The gloves stayed.

I understand. I’m older than you and lived in the “pre” era as a child. I loved being able to sleep in the back of our station wagon on long family trips. OTOH, I have a deviated septum from a hockey fight before we had to have cages or shields on our helmets and I have a scar on my forehead and a hole in my left shin from when a car drove through me at a rural intersection when I was riding my bike without a helmet at age 21. I think I became prone to depression afterwards, but I have no proof. Yes, I think we can go overboard. But I generally complied with our kids due to experiences.

The Speaker of the Unicameral notes that all six redistricting bills have to be passed by Saturday, or no redistricting occurs.

The threat is:

a) The Census shows that the population went up in Omaha, which should gain a district at the expense of the rural area, because the legislature won’t raise the number of state senators beyond the forty-nine we already have.

b) That would mean that (apparently) the existing districts would remain for the next ten years.

What that would amount to is that Omaha would be somewhat weaker in the legislature than it should be, but the three federal districts would remain (meaning no racist gerrymandering).
