There were definitely problems with Humana and overcharging. As to FBI involvement, given their handling of the Nasser case, I wouldn’t be surprised if the FBI was negligent in their investigation of certain crimes. But what does that have to do with Obama and Biden?

Michael Cohen told Insider he thinks Donald Trump is bluffing about possibly launching another bid for the White House.

Said Cohen: “His insatiable need for attention is one reason he continues to flaunt this disingenuous 2024 run.”

He added: “The other is he’s making more money doing that than anything he has ever done before.

I dont gaf about the bluffing

The march to unearth Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 secrets has shifted into a sprint.

In interviews, six members of the House panel investigating the Capitol attack made clear that they’re prepared to fly past any obstacles they encounter, mindful of Trump’s past success at stymieing congressional investigators.

The calendar makes their job tougher: Panel members know they need to show results quickly as the midterms bear down, given Democrats’ thin majority.

“The schedule has always been a challenge to accomplish what we need to accomplish in the timeframe,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) “We’re committed to do it and we’ll use every available tool to get there.”

And the potential hurdles are many — from high-powered lawyers representing the former president’s inner circle to the tech companies sitting on potential witnesses’ communications to possibly even fellow lawmakers who aided Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Why would TFG quit running for president if it’s making him so much money? Easy answer is that he won’t quit. He will be the GOP nominee in 2024, and GOP officials across the country will try to install him as dictator when he loses.

Germany is voting on Sunday, my 19-year-old daughter will be voting in national elections for the first time (she voted in state elections in the spring)

But she makes up a minority: Voters over 50 make up the majority of voters, and their tastes and tendencies skew conservative. They are concerned with economic stability and preserving the pension system.

Those who grew up in the post-war years see meat as a big treat and are not about to give it up or cut back unless they doctor orders them to.

Going to be an interesting outcome.

hi

It’s already past my bedtime, so I’m not here for long.

This tops Wonkette this morning:

Mike Pence Brags To Hungarian Fascist Pals About Births American Fascists About To Force

Anyway, it’s time to talk about Hungary again, because Mike Pence just told the Budapest Demographic Summit (yes it’s really called that) that he is personally creaming his pants over how America is about to outlaw abortion and take all the uteruses by eminent domain:

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that he is hopeful the new conservative majority on the Supreme Court created during his and President Donald Trump’s administration will soon overturn abortion rights in the United States. […]

“We see a crisis that brings us here today, a crisis that strikes at the very heart of civilization itself. The erosion of the nuclear family marked by declining marriage rates, rising divorce, widespread abortion and plummeting birth rates,” Pence said. […]

Pence praised how abortion rates have fallen under Orban’s leadership. And he voiced hope that things would change in the U.S. as well, recalling that the administration in which he served as vice president appointed 300 conservative judges to the federal courts, including three new justices to the Supreme Court.

“We may well have a fresh start in the cause of life in America,” Pence said. “It is our hope and our prayer that in the coming days, a new conservative majority on the Supreme Court of the United States will take action to restore the sanctity of life at the center of American law.”

CPAC will also be in Hungary in 2022. There is little space between the GOP base and fascism anymore.

Budapest to Host CPAC in 2022 (Budapest Business Journal, seven hours ago)

Budapest will host the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a gathering of conservative activists and elected officials from the United States and beyond, in 2022, the Budapest-based Center for Fundamental Rights said, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

CPAC, which is organized by the American Conservative Union (ACU), touts itself as the “largest and most influential gathering of conservatives in the world”.

Center for Fundamental Rights director Miklós Szánthó said at a press conference that CPAC could take place in Budapest at the end of March 2022. The goal is to attract a number of outstanding U.S. politicians, journalists, and influencers to Hungary, he added.

The tropics, brought to you by one of the safest places to be in the USA from tropical weather.

Disturbance Three is currently over land in Africa. It is expected to move off Guinea’s coast in a few days, where it has a low chance of development into a tropical cyclone in the next five days.

Disturbance Two has formed southeast of Bermuda, with little chance of intensification before it is torn apart by shear. It will move generally north-northwest.

Disturbance One, the remnants of Tropical Storm Odette, is still moving south-southeast on its lap around the Atlantic. As it moves over warmer waters it is now nearly a tropical cyclone again. It is at 44°N, or several hundred miles northwest of the Azores. Development may be limited as wind shear is predicted starting tomorrow.

Tropical Storm Sam has formed in the central tropical Atlantic. It is the sixteenth named storm of the season, and breaks the record for earliest sixteenth storm (set last year).

Sam is expected to be a hurricane by Friday night, and a major hurricane by Sunday morning. It will intensify throughout the five-day period.

The front currently draped across the East Coast is expected to move out to sea, slowing the forward motion of Sam, and squeezing the Bermuda High to the west, causing the storm to continue tracing west.

The storm is expected to start turning to the west-northwest then northwest on Friday and Saturday, hopefully missing the Leeward Islands by several hundred miles.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Vanderbilt University Medical Center says technology it developed has led to the discovery of an “ultra-potent” monoclonal antibody against COVID-19 and variants, including delta.

VUMC made the announcement Wednesday, saying the antibody can neutralize against SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19. The research was published in “Cell Reports” earlier this month.

Researchers explain the technology behind the discovery is called LIBRA-seq, or Linking B-cell Receptor to Antigen Specificity through sequencing. It helped speed up the discovery.

UNL is the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

UNL sexual assault awareness fundraiser defrauded of nearly $11K, police say (Omaha World-Herald)

They made the mistake of believing an E-mail exchange.

After raising more than $10,000 for a local support organization for survivors of sexual assault, organizers of the “kNOw More” campaign at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were defrauded of the money, according to police.

The organizers, affiliated with 402ink, a Lincoln screen printer, reported the fraud to Lincoln Police at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Advocates had raised $10,960 by selling “kNOw More” T-shirts in the wake of an alleged sexual assault at a UNL fraternity house in late August, which prompted a week of protests and sweeping changes announced by the university.

Olivia Minderman, a first-year student from Omaha and a Greek life member, launched the campaign in the tumultuous week after allegations surfaced involving a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

As organizers prepared to send the money to Voices of Hope, a third party emailed the print shop and purported to be a representative of the advocacy organization, Officer Erin Spilker said.

Organizers, under the impression that the fraudster was affiliated with Voices of Hope, wired the money to an account presented in the email exchange, Spilker said.

Biden White House leans toward releasing information about Trump and Jan. 6 attack, setting off legal and political showdown

The White House is leaning toward releasing information to Congress about what Donald Trump and his aides were doing during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol despite the former president’s objections — a decision that could have significant political and legal ramifications.

Trump has said he will cite “executive privilege” to block information requests from the House select committee investigating the events of that day, banking on a legal theory that has successfully allowed presidents and their aides to avoid or delay congressional scrutiny for decades, including during the Trump administration.

But President Biden’s White House plans to err on the side of disclosure given the gravity of the events of Jan. 6, according to two people familiar with discussions who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private discussions.

This would be a nice little FUCK YOU to Orange Foolius and Crackhead Mike!

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Sep 23, 2021 • 12:16:56pm

A couple of updates to the antivaxxer in California who lead a group called “Moms for Liberty” and had hundreds of thousands of people she was intentionally misleading with her antivax propaganda (her death actually made worldwide press).

She abandoned four children by her death. (I won’t use orphaned, since that implies the parent was not at fault.)

One of the people at Sorry Antivaxxer attempted to contact her brother (or father of two of the children, the relationship is confusing). He was vicious in reply. Screen shots of the Faceborg exchange are now up on the article.

The usual tone police and concern trolls are out in force in the comments because of her massive following. She was a worldwide one-woman wrecking crew.

Over and over again you see people demanding privacy, when their Faceborg accounts are public on purpose (you can’t spread propaganda to assist in genocide if you do it privately).

(While Congress is calling on Faceplant to cough up information on the Myanmar genocide, perhaps they can demand information about their participation in the Republican genocide.)

There is more information about her and her Omaha-sized following at Joe My God.

Kristen Lowery, 40, Escalon, California, Anti-vaxxer “ex-vaxxer”, died of COVID. Update 9/22/21 (Sorry Antivaxxer)

California Anti-Vax Leader Dies Of Something (Joe My God)

Like most of them, the person who puts up the GoFundMe never says exactly what the person died from. Even in death, they have to protect their conservative faith from facts.

The usual stream of events seems to go:

Christian proselytisation
Antivax nonsense
Claims of bodily autonomy over societal good
Anti-mask nonsense
I’m not feeling well
I’m going to get checked out by the doctor
More antivax and anti-mask nonsense
Pray for me, they are putting me in the hospital
More antivax and anti-mask nonsense
Pray for me, they are putting me in the ICU
More antivax and antimask nonsense
Pray for me, they are going to intubate me
The call goes out from family and friends for “prayer warriors”
Dies
Tributes to what a good parent they were by abandoning their children.
Family puts up GoFundMe account and omits or lies about why they died.

Media chastises people who are angered over dead antivaxxers who are trying to participate in a genocide, tut-tutting about “tone” and “civility” while these people hold the world hostage from their selfishness.

This woman’s GoFundMe is fast collecting a metric fuquetonne of money, because of the staggering amount of followers she lied to.

In a GoFundMe that’s hoping to raise money for her final expenses, Lowery is described as a “beautiful and amazing woman but more than that she was phenomenal mother who always, ALWAYS put her children first.”

No she did not.

“She lived for her children … and loved being their mother more than anything in her life,” the fundraiser statement continues. “She was full of life and love her friends and family fiercely.”

No she did not. She abandoned them for her religion.

Incidentally, the handful of panels I had them put on the east-facing side of the roof are generating the same output as the ones facing south…so having a relatively gentle slope on the roof has its advantages.

I did this so we could remodel our garage when we moved the door - flatten the roof and put a deck with gas fire pit up there so people could have cocktails and see the water (since some asshole built a big house blocking half our view).

Very good news, and a lot of detail (essentially, Zuck lying his ass off in front of American and UK committees, plus Facebook corporate governance being a bunch of Zuck puppets doing his personal bidding instead of Facebook’s). A Heartening Documentary Follows the Community Harvesting Ice in Minnesota’s North Woods
thisiscolossal.com

Done the old fashioned way! Brings back memories! They used to do that in the tiny crossroads where we used to vacation every summer. The ice was stored in an old wood building, insulated with sawdust. We walked past it every day on our way to the general store/post office to send off post cards and get our Treat. In my case, it was a fudgesicle. Ah, memories!

The lake was glacial, with a sand beach, and water colored by peat to look like pale root beer. I used to sit in the shallow water and make a pool, and collect baby catfish: they looked like little scraps of black velvet. Then a boat would come in and wash them all free again.

re: #52 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

At least her abandoned children will have money. I’m sure they would rather have a mother, but they might be better off without this nutter.

A big thread concerning a massive lawsuit against Facebook.

[Embedded content]

Apparently this came about through a lawsuit by the State of RI:

As background, State of Rhode Island originally had sued Facebook claiming it WAY overpaid FTC by as much as $4.9B to protect Zuckerberg. It won rights to inspect a lot of docs from 2013-2019 leading to this new lawsuit which draws on a ton of evidence from all over the place.

Here’s a story about that lawsuit:

RI pension fund sues Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg over Cambridge Analytica scandal
[…]
The legal challenge will remain under seal until next month, but General Treasurer Seth Magaziner in a statement offered a glimpse into its contents. The crux of his argument: decisions by Facebook executives made in the wake of the Cambridge Analytical scandal were not in the best interest of the company and its shareholders, effectively hurting Rhode Island and its $10.3 billion retirement fund.

Regular and ICU beds in Nebraska have been dropping in availability since July 5.

Then, there were 41% general beds and 45% ICU beds available.

Now, there are 24% general beds and 18% ICU beds available statewide.

Paediatric beds are also falling, but at a slower rate.

Locally, Morrill County (seat Bridgeport, my) is now tied with Box Butte County (seat Alliance) for the highest case rate in the Panhandle (868 per 100,000). 34% of my county is vaccinated. (The highest percentage is extremely rural Banner County which borders mine to the east and Wyoming to the west at 49%, followed by the most populous county Scott’s Bluff at 48%).

My county has 42 new cases in the last two weeks, 652 since the pandemic began (almost 10% in the last two weeks). We are in the highest risk category.

Nebraska State Dashboard County Statistics Map

One county in Nebraska has had 0 cases (Hayes, two counties east of Colorado and two counties north of Kansas, population twelve and over of 789).

Non-paywalled story:
How a California middle school’s history project led to name change

The name Juan Crespi never meant much to eighth grader Anaya Zenad and her classmates, other than it was the name of their middle school in El Sobrante.

But after the students researched the Franciscan missionary — and his role in expeditions that paved the way for the brutally oppressive California mission system in the 1700s — they felt the name had to go.

Earlier this year, Zenad joined with faculty to lead a series of community meetings on the school’s decades-old name and petitioned the West Contra Costa Unified school board to change it to something more in line with the school’s values of inclusivity and anti-racism.

On Wednesday, the board voted unanimously to change the name to Betty Reid Soskin Middle School, after the 99-year-old East Bay activist who is also the country’s oldest National Park ranger.

If his marks want to keep their money going to Trump, whatever, keep it out of the hands of other Republicans. Then, arrest and try Trump for everything.

I’m ok with that.

It’s inconvenient for Republicans.

Prosecutor Charged With Violently Raping Woman in Her Home (USA Today, September 23)

Somerset County District Attorney Jeffrey Lynn Thomas, 36, was accused of attacking the woman in her Windber home Saturday. He was charged with rape, indecent and simple assault, strangulation and criminal trespassing.

The Republican’s lawyer, Ryan Tutera, said that he was not guilty and that Thomas’ wife was working to get him bailed out of the Cambria County jail.

The criminal complaint’s police affidavit said the woman told investigators that Thomas had repeatedly contacted her for several years to seek a sexual relationship and would “routinely” drive around her house.

Trump might put women and minorities on his VP list, but he’ll want someone who “looks the part”, and to him that means a white man. The only woman he would consider is Ivanka.

Plus she already made the pilgrimage to Trump Tower in the 2016 race. He strung her along for a little while then forgot about her.

Buh-bye, Space Farce.

I have one of these 1950s vintage kits. Note that the folks in Monogram’s hypothetical Space Force were actually deployed in space while the real life Cheeto version is firmly grounded.
Willy Ley, who advised on a whole series of these kits, was an interesting character in his own right. He was an early member of the German Verein für Raumschiffahrt (VfR - “Spaceflight Society”) in the late 20s, writing extensively for their journal and later breaking into mainstream media to provide the first accurate, popular coverage of the subject.
He soon got into trouble:

Ley not only disliked the irrational nature of German politics, but he also associated the Nazis with the rise of “Pseudo-science.” To make matters worse, Ley had an established reputation as an international scientist, who openly shared and popularized technical information about rocketry, while his articles continued to be republished by foreign newspapers throughout 1934.

The Nazis had clamped a veil of secrecy on rocket research as soon as they took power and Ley’s foreign publications were violating it.
He forged a letter authorizing himself to take a vacation and fled to Switzerland, eventually arriving in New York in 1935. He joined science fiction fandom, wrote popular works on spaceflight and promoted rocketry. When the V-2 appeared in 1944, he became the go-to guy for American press speculation on rocketry.
To his surprise he was re-united with some of his old VfR associates after the war, but continued his independent career as a writer. He reportedly told a fan, “I’m glad they made it but they worked for the goddamned Nazis so naturally I am not friendly with them.”
He produced a number of very popular and well-received works on spaceflight in the 50s and 60s, advised Hollywood (and model makers), and became a US citizen. Tragically, he died less than a month before the first Moon landing.

Reminds me of the Manned Orbiting Lab, which was of course, not a lab, but was to be an orbital space station manned by military astronauts with really big cameras for recon. But, the Corona satellites and the later KH spy sats killed off the MOL. Several of the MOL astronauts in training went on to become early Space Shuttle astronauts. Lots of good documents about MOL have been declassified lately.

Yes. Along the south border with Maryland and south west of Lancaster. Rural and very very conservative area.

Edit: Correction. In that part of PA Lancaster County is east of the Susquehanna River and York County is west of the river.

well, that’s embarrassing. i would have said if you’d asked he was the coach of the Hurricanes.

Among the many Manny Diazes in Miami, you have the Republican Manny Diaz (Jr), Manny Diaz UM football head coach, and Democrat Manny Diaz former Mayor of Miami, who now serves as chair of the Florida Democratic Party. The football coach is Dem Manny Diaz’s son.

Apparently the two political Manny Diaz are in different districts, otherwise Miami could possibly have Manny Diaz Republican running for office against Manny Diaz Democrat.
