re: #120 ckkatz

This WashPost OpEd from yesterday is starting to get retweeted by a number of the accounts that I read. There is nothing in it that would surprise LGF readers, but it is good to see that the issue is getting higher visibility:

Opinion: Our constitutional crisis is already here

washingtonpost.com

“It takes two, of course, to form a national unity coalition, and Democrats can make it harder or easier for anti-Trump Republicans to join. Some profess to see no distinction between the threat posed by Trump and the threat posed by the GOP. They prefer to use Trump as a weapon in the ongoing political battle, and not only as a way of discrediting and defeating today’s Republican Party but to paint all GOP policies for the past 30 years as nothing more than precursors to Trumpism. Although today’s Trump-controlled Republican Party does need to be fought and defeated, this kind of opportunistic partisanship and conspiracy-mongering, in addition to being bad history, is no cure for what ails the nation.”

re: #1 sagehen

Much of what Reagan proclaimed and participated in does lead to what we see today: Trumpism.

Trumpism is not new. It’s recycled John Birch Society x David Koresh (apocalypticism.)

As I wrote the other day, the intelligentsia (such as those who write WaPo editorials) avoid discussing the foundational problems in our society. They avoid the religious dystopia that invades many American families. This religiosity is then used as a tool by the very wealthy to turn masses of people against necessary governance and required change.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Sep 24, 2021 • 10:41:15am

Let me put it this way: Reagan was the anti-Eisenhower.

The JBS was founded in part to oppose Eisenhower. They hated him. Because Eisenhower believed in government, he believed in rights of people who had a bit too much melanin in their skin, he believed that a society and the world as a whole has to work together.

Reagan’s own rhetoric and campaigns were built on the right-wing hate industry that were part of the same school of thinking as the JBS.

Today’s GOP, the Trump GOP, is the child of Reaganism. Reagan himself was not so effective in establishing a right-wing government - Reagan’s big accomplishment for the right was mostly in appointing conservative judges. Oh, and reducing taxes on the wealthy, which is a given for someone who was funded by the wealthy.

Anyone who tries to pretend that the Trump GOP is not the child of the post-Carter (and post-Ford) 1980’s has missed some important insights.

For example, apocalyptic grifter Hal Lindsay and his cohorts deeply influenced a large swath of Christianity in this country. End-times thinking is mostly escapism. But the real day-to-day beliefs get worked out in the local churches. These same churches then turn around and shepherd their flock in regards to politics.

Jimmy Carter was the last national Democratic politician for whom Evangelical America could support. Since then this segment of society (tens of millions of people, perhaps up to 50 million if we count the weakly Evangelical) has been welded to the GOP.

And Trump knew this. And being the experienced con-man, Trump played (and still plays) the religious like a pro.

Sure, there are people who vote for Republican politicians who are not religious fundamentalists. There are quite a number of people who think the Democratic party, while not demonic, is still somehow anti-American. It’s an odd belief, but I see many comments online from people, probably youngish dude-bro types, who hate Democratic figures. They have their reasons, or perhaps they don’t. But these people are not the “base” of the GOP, they are just the gravy (that helps the GOP in some close races most likely.)

So my own conclusion, and I’ve been working on this for years now, is that the heart of the largest political problems in the US today arise from two key characteristics:
1) Urban vs Rural division;
2) Fundamentalist religionists who are in existential crises because the 21st century.

And that is why the Trump GOP plays both of those cards.

I fail to see the problem here. This will free up beds and valuable resources for people that deserve it.

Consumed by conspiracy theories claiming that doctors are preventing unvaccinated patients from receiving miracle cures or are even killing them on purpose, some people in anti-vaccine and pro-ivermectin Facebook groups are telling those with Covid-19 to stay away from hospitals and instead try increasingly dangerous at-home treatments, according to posts seen by NBC News over the past few weeks.

Yep. The people who don’t smarten up when COVID crashes into their narcissistic inner worlds shouldn’t be taking beds when they’re just going to argue with doctors and be a general pain in the ass.

The ones who are now engaged with reality, because the reality is not what Republicans made them believe, can stay.

Little wonder that in more primitive time, when we had less understanding of the forces of nature, the locals would see that and start looking for the prettiest girl in the village to toss her in there to appease whatever god (or demon) was causing that.

Much like how there’s now mounting evidence that the ancient site of Tall el-Hammam was hit by a low-altitude bolide airburst in the Middle Bronze Age - an apocalyptic event that might have been remembered and ultimately becomes the tale of the destruction of Sodom. People back then would’ve interpreted such a catastrophe as nothing less than some species of divine wrath, and then retconned a story to explain the event.

If it was something on the magnitude of the 1908 Tunguska Event, you’d be looking at an explosion equivalent to a 12 megaton nuke.

A most interesting read, send to me last night:
Forest Garden With 500 Edible Plants Requires Only a Few Hours of Work Per Month

returntonow.net

Historically, farms and forests have been at odds. Conventional wisdom says we have to cut down the forest to make way for agriculture.

But a growing movement called agro-forestry “capitalizes” on the free services forests provide farmers and gardeners.

Not only do trees protect more delicate edible plants from the elements and extreme weather, they provide nutrients, water, pest control and pollination services.

Although you might not find all your traditional annual veggies in a forest garden, you will discover hundreds of new varieties of edible plants you never knew existed, that are often more nutrient-dense and flavorful.

And if you choose your plants carefully, they will propagate themselves each year and live symbiotically among the hundreds of diverse species around them, requiring no tilling, planting, fertilizing, weeding or watering.

It turns out that one of the ducts they made was made incorrectly, so they have quit and will be back Monday.

I guess that finding out before they installed it is better than finding out afterwards.

By the way, you had previously mentioned an issue with the installer being ill. I am assuming that this has been addressed acceptably?

There’s not really much question here IMO, of course Trump is going to try to litigate blocking the release of “executive” docs, For one, it’s been Trump’s practice since fucking forever to run to court as a go-to strategy in virtually any and every circumstance. Usually accompanied by loud and extended public outrage (and the hope that by the time any judicial decision actually gets made, the public will have lost interest.
Not sure that’s going to work in this case, but I’m sure they’ll try…

The Asshole Farteth…

Trump tries to claim vindication after his own audit shows he lost: ‘Many votes were terrible, terrible votes!’

Uh, yes…especially the votes cast for you Turd-O!

While appearing on the “Real America’s Voice” network, Trump said that the final audit results will show that he won the state, even though he really did lose it.

“They found many votes that were terrible, terrible votes!” Trump said. “In other words, they found that they were false votes, phantom votes, whatever you want to call them.”

As I said above Fuckhead…especially the terrible votes cast for you!

Eh, I think it’d be better than crypto (which is still being sold as money without government backing, and I’m still waiting for the first time a “mine” is hacked and all hell breaks loose). But it’ll probably be a niche thing, kinda like Soylent that caught everyone’s attention a few years back. Maybe in a generation or two, once they figure out how to modify it enough to tell the difference between say grain fed/grass fed/free range.

Shit

Actor Michael K. Williams death was accidental and came after ingesting fentanyl laced heroin and cocaine, the city’s chief medical examiner announced this afternoon.

There have been a lot of problems with fentanyl laced heroin and cocaine in Fairfax County lately. Earlier this week:

Police believe fentanyl-laced cocaine led to 6 overdoses in Fairfax Co. early Tuesday

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (7News) — Fairfax County Police officials are warning residents about a deadly batch of what they believe is fentanyl-laced cocaine in the community after six people overdosed in the 5500 block of Seminary Road in Falls Church around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Chief Kevin Davis said one of the victims is clinging to life and five others are recovering at a nearby hospital. All six victims were at a nearby club in Alexandria called Babylon Cafe earlier in the evening, police said. They then came back to the apartment and that’s where police believe they took the drugs and overdosed. Police cannot say if the drugs were purchased at the cafe. A family member who found them called 911.

Eclectic Cyborg  Sep 24, 2021 • 2:42:45pm

If you’re curious as to why other drugs get laced with Fentanyl, it may not surprise you to find out the answer comes down to money:

According to a CDC report, deaths related to fentanyl increased by 45% in 2017 alone. Synthetic drugs are often more deadly not only because of how strong they are, but also because of the ever-changing ways in which they are blended into other substances. This makes it difficult for people to know not only what they are taking, but also the strength of the drug.

Many families wonder why anyone would lace a product with a substance like fentanyl, given it could easily cause an overdose. After all, who would knowingly promote a product that has the potential to kill their buyers? The answer lies in economics. Lacing a substance with fentanyl makes the drug cheaper to produce, and when combined with other sought-after substances, can generate huge profits, despite the risk of overdose and loss of life.

Today’s filibuster against the racist gerrymandering maps once again veered into the GOP stealing a nursing mother room paid for with private donations and turning it into an office for a Republican.

Most of the Democratic caucus is women in this state. They are backed by the ACLU on the theft by the GOP of the nursing room paid for by private donations for an office.

The GOP is getting frustrated because they really don’t like talking about things like nursing or their own theft being broadcast day-after-day on Nebraska Public Radio and Nebraska Educational Television. (That issue could be fixed by them returning the office for its own purpose. They don’t want to do that though, they are thieves.)

When a female Republican staffer a couple years ago complained there was no nursing room in the state capitol, she got the brush-off from the person she worked for and the administration department for the capitol.

She organised the fundraiser to create the nursing room, then ran as a Democrat and ousted her former boss.

After the money was raised and the room remodeled, the GOP took it over and made an office for a staffer out of it.

The person who donated the most money to the campaign is threatening to sue the state GOP.

I don’t listen to the luminaries so I don’t know.

I was hoping for some late summer rain for the poor loquats, which are struggling because we had far too little spring rain. They look happier now.

There are bands of thunderstorms going through the county, oriented east to west, moving west. Some are now over the ocean. So if you’re in the band you get lots of water. If you’re outside of a band you get sprinkles.

Noticed there is rain up in Orange County too.

The forecast mentioned a slight chance of rain this afternoon. No one said anything about deluge.

From the WashPost this evening. On Haiti, with better numbers, from Mayorkas, than I gave above. Also, reportedly, another wave is on its way.

All migrants have been cleared from encampment in Del Rio, Tex., homeland security secretary says

…snip…
Of the 30,000 who arrived to that area of the border after Sept. 9, about 12,400 have been allowed to request asylum or another form of humanitarian protection, a process that typically means they are released from custody and allowed to remain in the United States while their claims are pending.

Mayorkas said about 2,000 migrants have been expelled to Haiti on a total of 17 flights organized by DHS. Six more flights were scheduled Friday.

…snip…

Most of the 8,000 [ who “decided to return to Mexico voluntarily,”] were part of those who arrived to the Del Rio camp, indicating more than half of the migrants who arrived there have returned to Mexico, according to a DHS official who was not authorized to speak to reporters.

The remaining 5,000 are being processed “to determine whether they will be expelled or placed in immigration removal proceedings,” he added.

Doctor who has lost over 100 patients to covid says some deny virus from their death beds: ‘I don’t believe you’ (Yahoo!)

Matthew Trunsky is used to people being angry at him.

As a pulmonologist and director of the palliative care unit at a Beaumont Health hospital in southeastern Michigan, Trunsky sees some of the facility’s sickest patients and is often the bearer of bad news.

He gets it. No one is prepared to hear their loved one is dying.

But when a well-regarded intensive care unit nurse told him during a recent shift that the wife of an unvaccinated covid patient had berated her when she informed the woman of her husband’s deteriorating condition, Trunsky, who has lost more than 100 patients to the coronavirus, reached his breaking point.

When he got home that evening, he made himself a sandwich and opened Facebook.

Still sporting his black scrubs, he began to vent. He wrote about a critically ill patient who disputed his covid-19 diagnosis. Another threatened to call his lawyer if he wasn’t given ivermectin, an anti-parasite drug that is not approved for treating covid. A third, Trunsky wrote, told the doctor they would rather die than take one of the vaccines.

One demanded a different doctor, “I don’t believe you,” he told the physician.
