Jesus Christ on a fucking pony - what a mess things have been today when it comes to my own personal tech!
First, I upgraded from an iPhone 12 mini to a iPhone 13 Max at Best Buy - the dude behind the counter messed several things up trying to get my phone to me - in the process I was trying to back my old iPhone up via iCloud, but that turned into a massive fail - eventually did a factory reset of the Mini hand handed it back to the sales schmuck, who said that I needed a new SIM - WRONG! I pulled that SIM out of my Alcatel/TCL Firece XL Windows Phone 10 (!) that workes absoulutely fine, thankyouverymuch!

So, I’m slowly getting the Max setup, when I run straight into the massive hot mess that is the Apple ID two-factor authentication process, which as our esteemed host Tweeted to me, is a hot mess.

But wait - there’s more!

My Netgear CAX30 Wifi6 cable router all of a sudden went tits-up! WTF? So, trying to connect to Spectrum to get this mess straightened out - then my iPhone Max’s networking goes tits up, so I did a network reset to get my T-Mobile service back - it worked, but I live in a cellular toilet, so I hop into my car, drive a mile down the road and WHAM- full 5G Bars! Make my connection to Spectrum, drove back home, and called their Internet troubleshooting guy - he hit the modem to refresh the signal, and everything looked green on his end, but no joy in the Fruit Bat Cave - so now I have a trouble ticket opened with Spectrum!

Who says technology isn’t fun? It’s back to the porch to I can finish my Ashton Churchill and Short’s Huma Lupa Licious India Pale Ale, and maybe catch some Toonami…

Meanwhile, the endless speculation regarding the identity of Jack the Ripper continues. It is one of criminology’s most enduring cases, with really the only modern equal being the Zodiac Killer.

They called him the ‘greatest criminal of the century’ - a murderer, swindler and bigamist who slashed the throats of two of his wives and savagely ended the lives of his four children.

Now new research suggests Frederick Deeming may also have been history’s most infamous serial killer - Jack the Ripper.

I began investigating Deeming’s extraordinary life and crimes intending to write a book about an eccentric plumber and former Lancashire seaman who briefly became the world’s most hated man in the late 19th century.

dailymail.co.uk

A former Scotland Yard detective, Robin Napper, and a team of fellow researchers came to the conclusion that most of the evidence points to Deeming being Jack the Ripper. Deeming was apparently in England at the time of the Whitechapel Murders in late 1888.

Switzerland has approved same-sex marriage in a referendum.

Swiss voters appear to have decided by a clear margin to allow same-sex couples to marry, according to a projection after a national referendum on Sunday.

The projection, by the gfs.bern polling agency for Switzerland’s public broadcasters, showed the measure passing by 64% to 36%.

Switzerland’s parliament and the governing federal council supported the “Marriage for All” measure, and pre-referendum polls showed solid backing. Switzerland has authorised same-sex civil partnerships since 2007.

Germany recently had an incident of some yahoo who was turned away from a gas station for not wearing a mask. He later came back and fatally shot the clerk.

I do not know the extent to which he was an active militant anti-masker or Querdenker and the extent to which he was just a violent sociopath (although there is certainly a great deal of overlap there)

too many people are degrading our species by infecting it with irrationality in place of science.

how would you classify the mental state of someone who said all of these things?
you’d have to classify them as clinically delusional.
they are pure conjurations of a mind that are irrational.

we are defending reason and rationality in the face of an overwhelming lack of them both.

When one considers the constitutional issues involved, a person’s beliefs, or lack thereof, should have no bearing on how they are treated before the law, but these anti’s are trying to influence policy in a way that would impose their transmissable health conditions disease on others.

We are defenders of reason against a surging tide of human nature irrationality combined with diminishing human intelligence.

After all, if they could just keep it to themselves, most of these problems would disappear.

As my nephew (who is one of those rare conservatives who has a rational streak, i.e., he refused to vote for Trump in either of the past elections) pointed out that you don’t just fall down the rabbit hole, you are herded down it by the algorithms that direct you to news stories on your news feed.

She literally walked down the street to the community center, showed her photo ID (which everyone is required by law to carry) and her voter certification (which she gets automatically in the mail as she is registered at this address with the local authorities) and was in an out in a matter of minutes.

Mrs J and I got our Pfizer boosters at the local Kroger store Friday. I also got the flu shot, Mrs J declined, saying that she had three separate vaccines in one day some years back, (pneumonia, flu, tetanus), and broke out in hives. She blames the hives on “too much going on in my body at once”. Not at all sure of her conclusions but she will get the flu shot in a few weeks so no harm.

Trump claims that the Arizona “audit,” which affirmed Biden’s victory in the state, actually concluded that he won. Shameless lying and his fans eat it up.

Declare victory and move on. He can keep doing this until the next election.

Anybody take in the first episodes of Foundation on the Apple stream? I was in high school when I read the book so I don’t remember much other than the broad sweep. I’m not a stickler for true to the book so that sort of thing wouldn’t matter to me anyway. The visuals were OK - I do grump up a bit when I see spacecraft flying through swarms of boulders. Too bad the eps only drop weekly, it would make a good binge watch.

Assuming their chosen authorities accept the pill as a viable solution. (I guess that might depend on who owns the stock in the companies making said pill.) Otherwise, I think it will continue skipping from odd grift “cure” to odd grift “cure”.

On the personal Covid front:

a) Friend’s wife still in hospital (4+ weeks now), but out of ICU and showing steady improvement. Down to 4L of oxygen per day to maintain saturation and slowing getting more mobile working with a PT person. Friend himself got the antibodies early on and bounced right back.

b) Other friend from college and wife tested positive and are now self-isolating. Minor symptoms and both are vaccinated.

I am still practicing pretty limited contact. Shop once a week wearing a mask and washing up afterwards. Eat out once a week, but sit outside. (Waiters wear masks, usually properly.) About the only other contact is talking to my neighbors on each side, and that is usually standing outside and maintaining a bit of distance.

Picked purposefully to both evoke emotional reactions and as a justification for why minorities do not deserve special treatment or compensation for how they were previously treated. Ignores totally that the minorities don’t want special treatment - but want equal treatment, which they still don’t really get.

Financial institutions already have to report transactions of a over a certain amount($10K iirc). If there is an excessive amount of cash transactions in a short period of time, THAT will trigger the filing of a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) to the IRS. Frequent deposits/withdrawls of small amounts will also trigger a SARs as it could be a sign of money laundering or drug dealing. It could also be a clue that someone is trying to hide assets as well.

Because of the 24kt supply line required to produce jewelry it has attracted its share of bad guys, money laundering activities. So much so that a whole slew of rules for gold dealers was passed. Plus we have immigrated many from cultures that cherish 24kt as the currency preferred. For example. Take a look at the San Fernando valley. The only 24k and pure silver dealers are set up with coins and or pawn stores. Take a look at Chinatown. Need to buy 24k? Toss a rock and find a dealer.

And bank employees can report suspicious activity of any size. Like these guys that think themselves clever to deposit somewhat under $10,000 cash at a time.

Yep. When I was in the Casino game some of the things we were on constant look out for was people putting money on a game and then (without playing) cashing out the ticket to redeem at a kiosk. Same with someone breaking down a lot of $100.00s for $20.00s and never playing a game. Both would trigger a suspicious activity report and possible law enforcement intervention.

re: #122 Hecuba’s daughter

Hey lizards — my Trumpster fanatic posted the following on her FB page:

Does anyone know what the $600 allegation is about? They want to increase the number of IRS agents — but is there anything about $600 or is that manufactured out of whole cloth?

This is a number pulled out of thin air. I know that your bank has a limit on how much you can pull out of an ATM per day. I got a phone banker to lift the limit ($300) while I was standing at the ATM because I needed $500 cash right then (tips for a biiiiig party). And as the owner of the bank account and ATM card in question, I’m quite happy there’s a limit, because I’d be pissed if my account was emptied out….

Banks have all sorts of algorithms to suss out suspicious transactions. People have this idea that if they keep their withdrawals below $10K, it won’t awaken suspicions, and that would be wrong. The thing is, the IRS is generally dependent on the bank filing a Suspicious Activity Report, and in the era of Know Your Customer, banks are a bit more hairtrigger about filing SARs. Otherwise the IRS has to go in with a warrant or subpoena to get the information. This also does happen, because there are situations where the transactions looked regular and normal, but they’re having to build a case and need all the transactions. There’s a whole department full of people at the ops center whose only job is dealing with that.

ETA: I see it’s for real. Now I don’t know about small banks…but I know it wouldn’t take so much time to pull a daily report and send it to the government of over $600 transactions. But there is such a thing as TOO MUCH INFORMATION. They’re going to be overwhelmed, and it’s stupid. *rolls eyes*

Germany. Having an election on a Sunday, enabling a higher turnout. Imagine that.

Everybody has to register their primary residence. Doing so automatically registers you to vote.

Everyone is required to have a picture ID, so there is no issue with that. Just show up at the local polling place, and they cross your name off the list. My daughter says she was in an out within a few minutes.

Ehhh. Fun once but overrated in my opinion. The whiny bitch-ass character who goes around moping and being uncommunicative while his partners are getting shot up because of his Daaark Hiiistory is a noir movie trope they could have done without. Great intro music, decent soundtrack and stylish animation drags it out of the pit of mediocrity, live-actioning this series is a big leap for the remakers.

Picture ID and registration is not the issue with US elections. It’s that they use those as tools in order to try to suppress voting by certain groups. Make getting the ID difficult. Make the registration process difficult. Or simply give those groups fewer polling places to actually vote at.

I also point out to people that one needs a registered address in order to sign a lease, register a car, open a bank account, sign an employment contract, enroll children in schools, use local social services, etc.

All of that makes it rather difficult for illegal immigrants to establish themselves. But I cannot imagine America going for a solution like that, even though it would be cheaper and easier to maintain than a Wall.

I heard EoE was a complete Fuck You to the fan base, which wanted a different ending to TVEva. So Anno gave them a huge Fuck You and I’m not sure I want to watch it. I will say this, however, after watching TVEva, I see where a LOT of stuff (not just the music, it’s super-obvious) in Shin Godzilla came from.

Yep.

The end of the TV series was a budget compromise but also reflected that Anno simply couldn’t bring himself to “finish” the show in a way that met conventional understandings of how a shounen plot should resolve—victory through pluck and resolve, getting the girl—resulting in the highly abstract (and cheap create) resolution that also make the entire show into a psychodrama about Shinji learning self-love rather than a conventional “things happen, fight and win” plot structure.

People hated it.

EoE is alternately filled with fan service and very explicit, meta-aware moments in which the tawdriness and infantilism inherent in fan service are called out…and ends in a way that refutes that end of the TV series—Shinji learns nothing but technically “wins”—while also making the protagonist the embodiment of worse characteristics of otaku culture.
