Just spitballing here, but perhaps young people, with comorbidities and other serious medical issues are more likely to want to get vaccinated than those who are healthy and therefore more likely to encounter some complications as a result of getting the shot?

There may also be some specific causative factor more prevalent in young people (higher levels of a certain hormone for example) that would be leading to higher incidence rates.

Definitely worth a closer look IMO.

According to the Myocarditis Foundation: ” it most often affects otherwise healthy, young, athletic types with the high-risk population being those of ages from puberty through their early 30’s, affecting males twice as often as females. Myocarditis is the 3rd leading cause of Sudden Death in children and young adults.”

So, while incidence may be somewhat increased by the vaccines, the age and sex distribution sounds about right. Also, this is per million doses administered, and most cases are fairly mild and treatable. You just need to watch for it. I wouldn’t hesitate to have a child of mine (should I have one in that age group) vaccinated.

Since the introduction of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in the United States in December 2020, an elevated risk for myocarditis among mRNA COVID-19 vaccine recipients has been observed, particularly among males aged 12-29 years, with 39-47 expected cases of myocarditis, pericarditis, and myopericarditis per million second mRNA COVID-19 vaccine doses administered (6). A recent study from Israel reported that mRNA COVID-19 vaccination was associated with an elevated risk for myocarditis (risk ratio = 3.24; 95% CI = 1.55-12.44); in the same study, a separate analysis showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection was a strong risk factor for myocarditis (risk ratio = 18.28, 95% CI = 3.95-25.12) (4). On June 23, 2021, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices concluded that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination clearly outweighed the risks for myocarditis after vaccination (6). Every now and then we’d hear of some apparently healthy, ordinary high school football player dropping dead from a previously undiagnosed, unrecognized congenital heart defect. Maybe that’s more common than we realized, and it’s only the football players who stress themselves enough to trigger it.

(also… aren’t there a slew of mild, livable congenital abnormalities that people grow out of by their 20’s? Kind of like the way a soft spot on a baby’s head closes itself up?)

It’s like somehow, a doubling of the entire number of positive cases had to occur. This is why I don’t do statistics, ‘cause that just looks flakey to me.

Basketball is the religion in the part of the country I grew up in. I never really heard about such stories amongst the basketball players, but sports were something I actively avoided; I’m 100% sure they had their share of collapsed-on-the-court incidents.

I think these heart defects are probably minor to most people who live and survive without being super athletic. But add in heavy training, often to the point of exhaustion, heat, maybe a lack of water or fluids during practice and games and that defect gets tested, often to the point of failure or permanent damage.

Most basketballs courts are indoors. Lack of direct exposure to sunlight makes heat exhaustion a hell of a lot less likely.

In freshman football (1978) I literally had a coach who told us to spit out water because it would lead to cramping (during two-a-days). It’s a miracle no one died. His was probably a majority view at that time.

EVERYONE got them, whether they “needed” them or not, because coach said you had to take them.
