Silvana Estrada’s angelic first note strikes, and for a moment her family’s instrument workshop in Veracruz, Mexico, feels like a window to the heavens themselves.

Adorned in a white dress and a radiant smile, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist invites us to participate in a rich and varied expression of familial love and musical brilliance. She wastes no time entrancing her audience, using a stripped-down performance of “Un Día Cualquiera” — accompanied by nothing but soft claps and subtle harmonies — to showcase her impeccable vocal precision and range.

After a sweet “Bienvenidos,” Estrada picks up the Venezuelan cuatro — her most beloved magic-making tool — and jumps into a sublimely arranged, effortlessly enchanting rendition of “Tristeza.” Then, halfway through “Te Guardo,” something extraordinary happens: the sound of stringed instruments comes out of nowhere, and as Estrada steps away from her microphone, the camera follows, exposing a string quartet set up just off screen. After that moving reveal, Estrada takes a seat and begins to perform “Marchita,” where strings, cuatro, and voice marry in indiscernible harmony.

Shifting scenes once again, Estrada moves outside and we meet her papa, armed with a double bass. Father and daughter conjure a musical manifestation of pure love with a stunning performance of “Tonada De Ordeño [El Ordeñador].” Though the traditional Venezuelan tune is a longtime favorite, this performance is different. A butterfly takes a seat on Silvana’s mic and the camera zooms out to reveal the other instrumentalists in the workshop looking on in knowing admiration. Silvana’s voice reverberates across the Veracruz hillside and the world exhales, basking in a fleeting moment of divinity on earth.

There were immortal cell lines that existed prior to the discovery of restriction enzymes, which is what I guess you are referring to when you say recombinant DNA techniques.

The La Palma volcano started back up tonight. Amazing image of the lava fountains. Watching the video is almost like watching an old Disney animation, with the larger vent in the background throwing up lava mixed in the ash/dust so it looks animated, with the slightly lower and near vent pumping out mostly just lava:

I just wish the video quality was better. Whoever is running the video camera has grossly over-sharpened the video.

The annual U.S. government deficit, and the cumulative U.S. debt, are the results of decisions Congress and an Administration make, not independent variables.
Congress votes to authorize spending, and to raise or reduce taxes. The debt and deficit reflect these decisions, rather than controlling them, or being subject to outside dictates about their size.
The check you get at the end of a restaurant meal reflects what you have ordered and eaten. The number you see on a bathroom scale reflects calories in, versus energy out. The reading on a thermometer reflects outside heat.
In just the same way, the annual deficit-and-debt totals indicate what Congress has already decided on. They’re a measure, not a control. Putting limits on them is like limiting what the bathroom scale can show.

I know I push Linux Mint like a corner dealer, but I really do like it, and speaking as an IT professional, it has everything you need in an operating system, plus it uses jack shit for memory. Then again, I put my mother in law in a Chromebook 4 years ago and that’s all she needs for email, browsing, and doing a little shopping.

Simplicity is key. If something isn’t supported on Linux I’ll add a mobile emulator, because everything is mobile first these days.

I don’t feel like I “need” to do it. I just do it when I’m looking at updating a specific program. Ran Ubuntu 14.4 for four or five years on an old laptop and never updated it. And I like that Mint doesn’t nag me about needing to run it.

Unless the fellow was an active supporter of the Querdenker movement (beyond leaving a “digital trail”) it is hard to tell how much of it was the ideology and how much of it was him being aggressively sociopathic, the sort of thing that nonetheless makes one much more susceptible to the sort of ideology behind the anti-mask, anti-vax movement.

Unlike the USA, where non-mass shootings don’t even make the news, this incident seems to have touched a major nerve in Germany.

Last time I tried Mint in an old Atom notebook it didn’t have drivers for the GMA945 video chipset so it defaulted to software VGA emulation. Slow does not even begin to describe it. I put Windows 7 on the machine eventually, still not snappy (twin-core Atom with 1GB RAM) but at least there was driver support for the display.

I have a black thumb when it comes to Linux generally, ever since the very early days of Slackware. Windows on the other had Just Works for me — I built my current desktop about six months ago, from opening the boxes and starting assembling the parts to a working Windows 10 install took me about three hours. YMMV.

Mrs. Fish mostly uses her iPhone for everything; her PC has been taken over by the kids, who use it to play video games. I use my Windows setup a lot, but that’s because this is now my work PC, and I don’t know how well a VPN client would work on Linux. (I should try sometime.)

Well, here’s the rest of the story.

Even if there were dozens (and I assumed 4 dozen - 48 people), that would have been just 2.4% of the force resigning in protest over the mandate.

Just one guy. The union puffed up and claimed dozens retired, when it was a single guy according to the State Police. One guy. Out of 2,000+. That’s an impress 0.05% rate. More than 99% have gotten vaccinated.

NYC faces a bigger challenge btw, since the mandates have been upheld by the courts, and the NYPD has gotten only 58% compliance. That’s still a higher rate than most GOP controlled states, but horrifically low given that the leading cause of death among NYPD and law enforcement nationwide is: covid19 for the last two years. Gun violence is a distant second, and it’s amazing how the GOP and law enforcement ignore the root causes of their own deaths or see those deaths as something better than protecting lives in being.

I have nothing against linux, I have been using various flavors of it since the release of slackware. I just have a problem with the I don’t have to worry about patches and viruses attitude. Some of the worst corporate compromises I have found have come from someone who set up a linux server and then forgot about it. Great, it will run forever… with 6 bot nets and a bitcoin miner you never know about running in the background.

nor are they informed enough to be legitimately ‘concerned’ in any way about the vaccine itself.

I grew up there in the 1950s and 60s - the era when jokes about “L.A. smog” were a comedy staple. It was thought of as just another fact-of-life of living there (like the palm trees). Though it was a “sudden” revelation to me one day when I drove up to the Santa Monica Mountains on a day of a low inversion, and saw the stark dividing line in the sky over the city: blue above, brown below: and then thinking: “Wow - we live down there and breathe THAT???”

“Smog Alerts” used to be a regular thing when I was growing up: I think they have maybe one or two a year now (?).

Back on my high horse: you have to get 2/3 of the way through Starship Troopers to find out where this “service guarantees citizenship” idea originates.

We assume a military government must be the result of some sort of coup, but in this case, it was simply that world governments collapsed at the end of WW3, leaving soldiers and POWs stranded wherever they were.

That put an end to the concept of the nation-state. The only organized bodies who were able to maintain order were veterans, and they took it into their own hands to try to prevent chaos.

At first, they only allowed veterans to hold public office but later expanded it to anyone who did any sort of dangerous, potentially self-sacrificing service.

It has nothing to do with the pseudo-fascist state portrayed in Verhoeven’s film version (Verhoeven admits that he never finished reading the book)

Another unvaxxed acquaintance of mine has tested positive. The fifth one in the past week and a half. Wife also lost an unvaxxed high school friend (in his late 30s) last week.

This is what happens when you live in a state that has a current vaccination rate hovering around 40%.

And before anyone asks me why I don’t just cut ties with these acquaintances, it’s not that easy. In a state with such a low vaccination rate, almost anyone who lives here will have a not small contingent of anti-vaxxers among their peer groups.

It fucking sucks.

The other thing that Verhoeven totally screwed up was omitting the powered Mobile Infantry suits, which allowed them to send a handful of MIs down to neutralize an entire planet, not the hordes swarming off transports like Marines at Iwo Jima that he portrayed…

Included lines like, “The apparent basic formation unit of the Mobile Infantry is the ‘mob’.”

Basically went on to rip the military aspects of the movie apart from head to toe regarding doctrine, weapons, training, logistics and so on.

Verhoeven was doing his usual anti-fascist thing (this time as satire) along with riffing on various older military movies or documentary footage.* A lot of aspects of the book are simply ignored for not fitting what he wanted to do, or simply not being convenient for the budget or movie making - which is the main reason I think the powered armor aspects were skipped. Budget costs to develop along with necessary special effects, and helmets obscuring the actor’s faces.

* - Bugs pretty much played up as something equivalent to Zulus vs British troops; e.g. swarms of lower “tech” infantry (no guns, fierce in melee) vs lower numbers of gun-armed infantry. Tanker bugs riff on any number of WW2 movies where the infantry have to deal with a tank or other armored vehicle immune to the base weapons. And so forth.

This is a major miss from the Daily Beast article. It states:

Vaccinated people should, it seems, regard people who haven’t gotten vaccinated as at least potentially normal, and perhaps genuinely worried about having a needle full of liquid injected into their body.

The sorryantivaxxer site doesn’t post the deaths of “people who haven’t gotten vaccinated”. It posts the deaths of people who loudly and publicly rage against vaccinations and the health care workers who provide them. Damn straight I have no empathy for them.

One of the things I think McConnell is counting on is that at some point, Democrats will do whatever is necessary to raise the debt limit, which will include eliminating the filibuster even for it (I like Pelosi’s idea that it’s not a law but a custom). Even a small elimination of the limit will allow McConnell, if he’s in charge (which Manchin and Sinema don’t seem to have a problem with), to do his usual “The Democrats did it first, so we have to use it to fix things.”

Excuse me — the progressives are the bad guys. They are a large part of the party but they are not the majority. They had 2 candidates for president (and I supported Warren) but either one would have lost in a landslide to Trump. I like Jayapal and consider myself a progressive, but I am old and a realist based on many years of life lived. Given the situation in the Senate and the razor thin margin in the House, it’s going to take more time to get the large infrastructure bill in a form that it can pass through reconciliation. If the Jayapal caucus doesn’t cooperate, they will merit all the censure directed toward them and they will be the ones responsible for the end of the Biden administration.

If Biden were working with the majorities that Obama had in his first term, it would be very different, but he isn’t.

In the United States, as well, retailers are free to set limits on purchases. At the very beginning of the pandemic, there was an uproar amongst consumers when retailers swiftly moved to limit purchases of toilet paper, amid a massive run on the product because of people stocking up to price gouge later on, when it was supposedly going to be scarce.

Excuse me — the progressives are the bad guys. They are a large part of the party but they are not the majority. They had 2 candidates for president (and I supported Warren) but either one would have lost in a landslide to Trump. I like Jayapal and consider myself a progressive, but I am old and a realist based on many years of life lived. Given the situation in the Senate and the razor thin margin in the House, it’s going to take more time to get the large infrastructure bill in a form that it can pass through reconciliation. If the Jayapal caucus doesn’t cooperate, they will merit all the censure directed toward them and they will be the ones responsible for the end of the Biden administration.

If Biden were working with the majorities that Obama had in his first term, it would be very different, but he isn’t.

The Jayapal caucus has been giving into the amount being spent. Thave asked for there be a human infrastructure bill along with the other one.

They have yet to be a block on getting either of these bills through. the other hand, Manchin, Sinema, and the other moderates have been cutting spending from both bills, demanding that they be separated, and that the larger infrastructure bill be dropped, even though it would help the constituents that aren’t corporations.

So, no, it’s not the progressives that have been an issue.

Our guess is that the blue team decides to split the two issues and fund the government, leaving the debt ceiling to deal with in a couple of weeks. At that point, Schumer and Pelosi would have two basic choices: they could send a clean debt ceiling bill to the Senate floor, and let the Republicans take responsibility for killing it. Or, they could put the debt ceiling increase into the $3.5 trillion bill, which would make that bill too big to fail, and would give moderate Democrats in both the Senate and the House little choice but to vote for it. This would solve the problem of having to vote for the $1 trillion bill this week, before the $3.5 trillion bill is ready.

If the latter scenario comes to pass, then many will label that a Democratic “surrender.” But is it, really? It’s true that the Republicans will make the Democrats’ wasteful spending a major campaign issue in 2022 if the Democrats lift the debt ceiling all by themselves, but the Republicans are going to do that anyhow. And we are unpersuaded that most voters are highly motivated by the debt ceiling as a wedge issue (or, for that matter, by the debt itself). Meanwhile, the Democrats would have the argument that, in opposing the $3.5 trillion bill, the Republicans apparently don’t like education, day-care, the environment, etc., and that they hate those things so much and they love power so much that they are willing to crash the U.S. economy. Rather than a remake of Starship Troopers, I would like to see a major studio movie made from Harry Harrison’s Bill, the Galactic Hero.
(There is a student version, made by Alex Cox of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy fame.)

Harrison reports having been approached by a Vietnam veteran who described Bill as “the only book that’s true about the military.” Terry Pratchett once said, “I don’t think The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was the funniest Science Fiction novel ever written. The funniest Science Fiction novel ever written was Bill, The Galactic Hero.”

Come to think of it, the Verhoeven movie had more in common with Bill, the Galactic Hero than it did with Heinlein’s original Starship Troopers.

belief in are assertions of faith. Faith is belief without proof. it is by definition subjective, and the standards of evidence - in any other but a personally acceptable sense of the word, do not apply

The only ‘assumption’ that science utilizes is that reality exists, is objective, and can be understood by human observers.
