Just ordered Mrs. Fish a nice budget gaming laptop, a mouse, and a lap board. Time to get back into the PC gaming scene. I might need to do an upgrade to my tower sometime soon. Guess I’m putting off buying the tires for my cars.

You might need to buy a prebuilt PC to get the video card you want thanks to the silicon shortage and cryptomining.

I checked that out earlier today. The budget gaming laptop was less than what I would spend on a full system refresh, thanks to the huge price tags on even out-of-date last-gen video cards. It’s fucking ridiculous right now.

LOL. This is a rare moment for me. And for what it’s worth, I did talk to her about the tradeoffs, and it’s also quite likely that I will be able to get both of the cars outfitted with new rubber, new brakes, and oil changes before the snow flies. So it’s a risk, but a calculated one.

Charles Johnson  Sep 28, 2021 • 2:54:46pm

Just spent a very annoying day replacing my Spectrum cable modem/wifi router with their newer two-piece system. I didn’t actually want to do this; a couple days ago they just cut off my wifi without warning. I thought the device had malfunctioned but when I called they told me my account had been marked “opt-out” of wifi. WHICH I DID NOT DO.

It happened in the middle of the night. Suddenly all the wifi gadgets were dead in the water.

And… when this happened it actually changed my office IP address, which hadn’t changed in years, and that meant some of the security settings I was using on remote sites were suddenly locking me out. Took a while to realize it was the changed IP address, and then I had to get the host company to edit what needed to be edited because I was completely locked out.

So then I make the trip to the Spectrum store and get the replacement modem and separate Wifi router, set it up, plug everything in, and hey it looks like wifi’s working now and I can get on the internet, but whoa now, this seems really slow.

So I run the Internet Speed Test and I’m getting about 0.3 mbps. Which totally sucks.

More time on the phone with their support; for a change the guy I talked to knew exactly what to fix. The modem hadn’t been correctly “provisioned.”

Finally I’m back up. This has been my entire day so far.

The all-in-one boxes are usually kind of dodgy on either the Wi-fi or the cable connection. I have always used a two-piece setup, focused on a high-quality modem and not caring about its attached router, and a high-quality router that I can reflash to OpenWRT and set up with a right proper QoS system and my IPv6 tunnel.

re: #12 Charles Johnson

Charles, I don’t like the new 2 Piece Spectrum system but they gave me no choice and they keep pushing me to sign up for their phone system. When I got the new 2 piece system it also changed my IP address which caused major problems with the agency-issued laptop that I telework with. Took a couple hours for Spectrum and the agency to get my laptop back on line.

Just wish I had a choice of internet providers but my apartment building has an exclusive arrangement with Spectrum.

American ISPs are increasingly focused on big flashy download numbers, but what they neglect is that for every packet that comes in, an ACK packet has to go out. Massively asymmetric upload/download numbers may mean that your connection is getting throttled before it even has a chance to reach its potential. A 2-piece modem/router setup can help with that by letting you configure your connection to minimize the outgoing ACK traffic.

A while back I mentioned a college-age RWer I had encountered who thought communism failed because they put everyone on welfare and nobody wanted to work anymore. He had never heard of gulags and the like.
I suspect that fundy bullshit academies are a main source for this kind of nonsense, along with the subculture of itinerant guest speakers who circulate among fundy churches.
Ran across another one recently who thought “weather services” were private companies that were contracted by the military, the government and the UN to tell them anything they wanted to hear about climate change. I did not ask him his source but I did find out he was a recent graduate of a fundy high school in Albuquerque.

I have a medical card. I pay for that. Yearly. And Pennsylvania has no gummies, fruit strips, pops, candies with any amount of THC.
10 MG of THC seems to be the 10X’s 10 equals 100 MG package.
So in Pennsylvania if I choose store bought “edibles”, I take a capsule or pill and then eat peanut butter or some other protein to get it into my system or it’s all for moot.
Trust me.
And RSO syringes are off the chart insane.
And you still must take it with peanut butter or some protein to fire it.

A guy who lives across from me was just released a year or so ago for his part in running a pizza shop in Manchester that made only a few pies but took in drugs from Canada as a link in a chain that started in Mexico. It was wild. We had just moved in to this condo community a couple of months before when swat teams showed up and held a day-long vigil. He was caught ditching his car and running several miles away. He was mostly dealing weed and mdma. We have never talked but we exchange pleasantries now that he’s back with his wife and daughter. I think he got out early as weed laws changed.

Finally I’m back up. This has been my entire day so far.

Really hoping this is not a preview of my Friday. We’re switching to a new Internet plan and Verizon has to swap out the optical network terminal (ONT). Our current one is 14 years old and allegedly can’t handle speeds over 100 mbps; the new plan is 200/200.

In theory, it should be a simple swap, monkey with the telephone pole watcha-ma-callit and presto! New faster speed.

The other potential fly in the ointment is that my Verizon-supplied router is technically out-of-date, but according to their own web page, it should be able to handle the new speeds. No promises, though, LOL.

I generally have had almost zero problems with Verizon for 14 years, but there’s always a first time for everything.

Will do. We’re dropping FiOS TV and switching over to YouTube TV. I’m in the middle of the free trial, but I think we’re keeping it, even with the looming loss of NBC channels.

Perfect timing: I start the trial on Sunday, Google announces they may lose that network. I posted earlier that with over-the-air and streaming options, it’s not a deal breaker for us.

My current bill for TV and internet is $139 a month. This combo should knock it down to $110: $65 for YTTV, $40 for internet, plus tax.

If you wanted confirmation that some prominent Evangelical men are garbage creatures who hate women, here you go. This stars Franklin Graham and Jay Sekulow, trying to bully an abused wife into lying about her husband’s abuse.

Naghmeh Panahi: Franklin Graham & Others Bullied Me to Salvage #SaveSaeed

By Julie Roys

When Nagmeh Panahi, the former wife of Iranian-American pastor Saeed Abedini, told Samaritan’s Purse CEO Franklin Graham that her husband had abused her for years, she expected sympathy and understanding.

Instead, she says Graham asked Panahi if she was cheating on her husband.

“I felt like this bleeding woman on the side of the road,” Panahi told The Roys Report in an exclusive interview. “And this is the big stone being thrown—the first stone of adulteress.”

At the time—November 2, 2015—Pastor Abedini was imprisoned in Iran and the focus of a massive #SaveSaeed campaign, spearheaded by Samaritan’s Purse and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). Yet just hours before the call with Graham, Panahi sent an email to supporters revealing the shocking allegations of abuse.

Similarly, Panahi says when ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow learned that Panahi’s email, describing Abedini’s abuse, had been leaked to the media, he encouraged her to fabricate a story.

“The message I got from ACLJ was, ‘Now media is on this. We need to have a statement … What are we going to say to the media? We can say you’re on medication and you are mentally ill,’” Panahi recalled.

Panahi said she refused, telling Sekulow she was seeing more clearly than she had in years.

Despite repeatedly being beaten—once so badly she thought she was going to die—Panahi said she had excused and rationalized her husband’s abuse. But after Abedini’s relentless put-downs, calling her names like “Jezebel” and “whore,” and threats by phone and online from prison, Panahi said she had reached a breaking point.

Yet, she said Sekulow and Graham continued to pressure her to salvage her husband’s reputation and the #SaveSaeed movement, especially after Abedini’s release two months later—on January 16, 2016.

Shittons more information at the link, but of course be aware that the writer (Julie Roys) is very conservative.

” Richard Leake and Michael Dean sued Alpharetta, an Atlanta suburb, in August 2019 after city officials said the Sons of Confederate Veterans could participate in the annual Old Soldiers Day Parade but could not display the battle flag. The federal civil rights lawsuit accused the city of violating the group’s right to free speech under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

U.S. District Judge William Ray in June 2020 ruled in favor of the city, finding that the parade amounted to government speech. Leake and Dean appealed to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. A three-judge panel of the appeals court heard arguments in the case on Friday and on Tuesday issued an opinion upholding the lower court’s ruling.

“Because governments are not obliged under the First and Fourteenth Amendments to permit the presence of a rebellious army’s battle flag in the pro-veterans parades that they fund and organize, we affirm,” Circuit Chief Judge William Pryor wrote in the opinion. …”

Some background:

“… Alpharetta started the Old Soldiers Day Parade after the Civil War to honor veterans of that war, but stopped holding it a few years later. The parade resumed in 1952 at the prompting of a group of residents who wanted to recognize local veterans, and the city had sponsored it every year since. …”

I don’t have a story about this, but the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee met today and voted 39-35 to not waive legal privilege in the current investigation into child sexual abuse in the denomination. I use “denomination” deliberately, because although the SBC calls itself a “convention,” and a collection of churches that are each individually run, the reality is that the SBC Executive Committee actually runs the show. This vote is going to go towards piercing the corporate veil in the inevitable child sexual abuse lawsuits.

Eventually Robert Downen of the Houston Chronicle will crank out a report, but in the meantime, here’s a thread on what went on.

I’m pretty happy with Hulu; it’s got most of the NBC, ABC and FOX shows the next day, with no commercials. CBS, PBS and the CW have their own websites, all the shows are free for at least a few weeks after airing. (also, the PBS site lets you playback at 1.25x or 1.5x speed.)

ABC News is all about how the military guys wanted to keep troops etc in Afghanistan. As if this comes as a surprise after twenty years of “give us just a little more time and some more troops”. As if the President did not make it clear he had to keep a bargain made by the former guy, who, we know, heard 4 years or the same bs. So the Afghan gov fell fast. Were we really gonna expect it to last after our departure?

So I started watching a “new” show (new to me) on Netflix called Squid Game - it’s a South Korean survival drama where a bunch of people (456 of them to be precise) are challenged to play children’s games (eg: Red Light/Green Light) where the elimination is…shall we say, rather permanent (If you’re not into watching 200 people getting shot in the first episode, this probably isn’t for you).

Anyway, I binge-watched the first six or so episodes while working today (skimming through backstory shit as I do sometimes) and the last two episodes I watched I didn’t forward fast at all…really quite well done as the characters evolve…English dub is pretty good. English subtitles are close to the dub but distracting enough I turned them off.

Anyway, if you don’t mind a little blood and graphic violence, skim the first two episodes and by episode 4 you’ll find yourself in a pretty good drama.

re: #145 darthstar

Jimmy Fallon is talking about it, on tonight’s show.

I watched him…once or twice. That was enough. But as far as the show goes, Red Light/Green Light is probably the most challenging game ever conceived.

I still resent Fallon for how he handled Trump’s appearance on his show in 2016; he didn’t ask ANY real questions that all the other candidates have to answer on all the shows, just “can I ruffle your hair?”

Same here. Fallon was a stooge.

Leave troops in Afghanistan for what purpose? To become target practice for Taliban snipers? Every day we’d hear about one of them being knocked off. I’m glad that President Biden got us out of there completely. We shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
