Not to start the new thread with a shitty comment, but here I am…Ever notice how almost all envelopes these days have the little strip you pull off to seal, and almost none of them have the glue strip to lick? Well what twisted mind decided that the envelope you returned your fecal lab samples in needed the old fashioned glue on it?

Foggy morning here (has since cleared and the sun is generating electricity on my roof again)…but the boys enjoyed it…high tide, lots of people playing in the foam and waves…traffic now backed up to the point where we’re staying home (pumpkin hunters).

I had those samples recently. Instead of mailing them, I was instructed to follow the instructions to let the samples dry out and then put them in the envelope, then put the envelope in the hazmat ziplock bag I’d been given. Then I returned the samples to the practice (which has a lab on site). Everything was fine but they still want me to do another colonoscopy soonish.

i’m just not getting into the whole colonoscopy thing. it’s just one more opportunity for my doctor to cause me to needlessly worry about some non-cancer thing that they ‘want to keep an eye on.’ fuck it.

I had my colonoscopy this week! Just got the all clear from the Dr/lab. It is a huge relief that I don’t have to worry about this for the next ten years.

The procedure is a pain, but so worth it.

Yeah, same here. My five years is coming up and it’s absolutely a pain, but I’d rather do it and nip anything in the bud.

I wasn’t especially into it until a friend of mine, who’d put off his first colonoscopy until he was 60, got the colonoscopy, they found advanced colon cancer and ended up removing a foot of colon out of him. He’s now religious about the need for colonoscopies.

May I remind you of Warren Zevon?
He didn’t like “doctors” either.
Stayed away from them.
Until it was too late.
You can look up an old David Letterman interview with Warren and his admission of whatever you want to call it.
I was afraid of needles. Blood tests. That stuff.
Then I had my world cave in on me to the point of a Life Flight to another hospital. To save my ass.
Not knowing will kill you.
Just my 2 cents.
Take care. Nobody else will do it for you.
If you have insurance, take advantage of it.
Would you let your car or bike go without service?
Have a great weekend.
Back to chores.

oh i agree. I’m just so sick of medical shit at the moment. Got told a couple of years ago, while they were looking for non-existent heart problems that cost me a couple grand out of pocket, “Oh, you have hypothyroidism. You’ll need to take hormones for the rest of your life.” And 2 years later, my TSH level has actually dropped a bit and everything else is fine. I know colon cancer is really useful to catch early, and if they could do a procedure and then say, “yeah, you’re fine. come back in 20 years,” I’d be inclined to go through it. But I can feel really confident that what will happen is someone will see something non-cancerous but that fascinates the hell out of someone somewhere, and the next thing I know, I’ll be getting these fucking things every couple of years and having the shit scared out of me by doctors telling me it’s probably not cancer but maybe could become cancer.

My mother lost half her intestines. Shit in a bag.
I’ll take that test every year if they tell me.
I’ve had 2. Found precancerous first time.
None the second.
Going for my 3rd sometime this winter.
I have a fantastic GASTRO doc with a great crew.

The thing about colon polyps is that they grow slowly. Very slowly. If you have them they are removed during the procedure and under most circumstances you can wait at least 5 years if not longer for the next colonoscopy. One of the great things about Obamacare is that the procedure is fully covered.

Definitely off topic. Recently I sent a link to an article about the Julia Belle Swain riverboat for sale, built 50 years ago. Turns out that it was named for an acquaintance of mine, and built by her father when she was a child.

There was a recording playing as you went along, explaining the sites along the river and the uniqueness of the design of boat, interspersed with Burl Ives’ recordings of songs of Lincoln’s era. Ives was a classmate and friend of Judge Trone, who built the boat.

A very close friend of mine was also a friend of Julia and her parents, and her uncle was also a friend of Ives, so she got to go on the boat and meet Ives and even sing with him (she has a glorious voice).

The Trone family lived on the Sangamon River, which is quite shallow, and the boat was made to work on the Sangamon. It spent winter in dry dock at their home. And did regular passages from Petersburg (on the Sangamon just north of Springfield) to Lincoln’s New Salem for events there.

Now I wish I had gotten to ride the boat!

The bad news, because statistically something else is likely to kill you first.

In place of my first colonoscopy, I was given a sigmoidoscopy. It doesn’t go up as far and therefore needed no anesthesia. The doc who did it, turned a monitor around so that I could watch and gave me a narrated tour of my lower colon.

I found it kind of interesting.

When my dad (retired GP) got his first sigmoidoscope in his office, I wrote a song for him…and he loved it so much he sang it to his patients (I get my goofy from somewhere)

You put the sigmoid in
You take the sigmoid out

And you take a look about
You find yourself a polyp and you pull the sucker out
That’s what it’s all about!

Interesting day yesterday. Wife and I got our Phizer booster shots and as an added bonus, were able to get flu shots at the same time. So far, no adverse effects.

We also had a major storm pass through yesterday and last night. We received 1.90 inches of rain as of midnight last night. With the heavy rain we had wind gusts up to 69 MPH. The sump pump in the crawl space under the house was pumping out water every 10-15 minutes.

Right now? Partly cloudy with the sun poking through.

Interesting day yesterday. Wife and I got our Phizer booster shots and as an added bonus, were able to get flu shots at the same time. So far, no adverse effects.

Good to hear about the lack of adverse effects! And congrats on getting your Covid booster shot.

I got my flu shot last Sunday and ended needing (and taking) very long naps both Sunday and Monday. The first time I ever remember having any effects from a flu shot.

Awesome. Got my flu shot last week. Getting my booster this Wednesday.

Thanks for reminding me, guys. I had “call Dr. for appointment” on my to-do list yesterday and it’s the only one I didn’t manage to draw a line through. I had a non-cancerous polyp clipped on my first go-round and so they recommended every 5 years. I need to get that done.

It doesn’t matter WTF Republicans say. The only thing progressives should be thinking about is which is worse:

1) Let D moderates have their way once again, and pass something that is clearly inadequate just to get something done.

2) Hold the line vs D moderates, accepting that nothing will pass if moderates remain stubborn.

Both options have such serious downsides that there is no easy choice here.

I have repeatedly made my position clear on this.

If Manchin is negotiating in good faith and it’s possible to reach a compromise with him so that a smaller BBB is accepted by the moderates, then we can breathe a sigh of relief and get both bills passed. It’s an audacious plan given the razor thin majorities Biden holds and he and Pelosi should be acknowledged forever as wizards who achieved the impossible.

But if somehow that fails — then a failure to pass the bipartisan bill will effectively end our democracy. As I said downstairs, 2022 will be a repeat of 1994, but with no possibility of recovery. The GQP are beyond redemption — but they gained seats in the house in 2020, even with Biden’s win. And Trump has a complete hold on his party.

Obviously the unexpected can happen. No one anticipated a pandemic that changed everything. But I remain pessimistic about the outcome.

People must be buying PowerBall plays more than expected because the Multi-state Lottery company has raised tonight’s jackpot from the previous estimate of $620M to $635M.

Also, coverage is expected to be 19.5% of all possible combinations, so there’s a decent chance someone will win the jackpot, but still more likely that someone won’t.

I did the “Cologuard” tests (aka pooper scoopers) for several years then had a colonoscopy a few years ago (because a family member had precancerous polyps discovered with his.) Nothing going on in my colon, so I imagine it’s back to the annual poop tests for me when the 10 years is up.

I was looking at the ASHG online planner for the upcoming meeting, and I swear the web designer is using a WHITE scrollbar on a WHITE background:

The scrollbar is super skinny and just a tiny bit grayer than the white background.

Thanks. Under 4 cm is best, but under 7 cm is still apparently considered on the small side. (Both sound enormous to me, but that’s what I’ve read.) On the kidney is better than in the kidney because it’s easier to remove. The big question is whether there has been any spread, or if it is just the one tumor.
Best wishes to your stepson.

Surgery pretty much the likeliest thing to happen. I did some research before a surgeon cleaned one of my kidneys out (of a growth that luckily was benign) and kidney cancer is pretty much always dealt with via surgery because it appears to be fairly resistant to chemo and radiation.
