Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and Dave Holland, Live at the 1990 Mellon Jazz Festival in Philadelphia

YouTube

This was one of the greatest high-energy jazz concerts of the modern age, and I’ve only seen pieces of it before. But this video popped up in my YouTube home page tonight, and I’m sitting here watching with jaw fully dropped. I even liked Pat Metheny’s guitar synth solo for a change. He burned it down.

Pat’s still so much better when he plays straight-up jazz guitar, though. And there’s plenty of that in this concert.

YouTube may take it down so enjoy it while you can. It’s out of print. You can still buy the DVD if you search for it, but it’ll cost ya.

I’m only through the first number, but it’s fabulous. I have to say that I love when Herbie and Pat trade note clusters; not that I don’t love Pat’s soloing.

There is a common saying: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Obviously this was first voiced before the modern age of technology, especially involving equipment connected to cable networks or the internet, where indeed you can repeatedly try the same steps over several days and suddenly the device starts operating successfully.

Just watched the latest really great music analysis video on a youtube channel called Trash Theory

Every two weeks, he talks about music history and how different rock sounds and bands have risen and fallen and especially surrounding things like metal, punk, grunge and what he calls “New British Canon”. This week’s video is on the growth of Grunge before it exploded in 1991 with Nevermind. Good stuff if you it fits your interest. Some are more interesting than other episodes but I’ve never heard a bad one yet.

Someone should start a skit, stop it, and the say “We were going to have a skit on Senator Sinema tonight, but we realized that, no matter how bad we made her look, she would just consider it to mean she should keep doing what she’s doing. So, instead, we’re going to list all of the companies that have given her money since her election while we play videos of her campaign promises.”

Time has passed the media behind:

The most astonishing thing that I find about the Woodward/Costa book is their total bewilderment over lack of people giving a sh*t.

If these guys would have come out with this overthrow info when it was current then we could have used it against the people who were trying to overthrow democracy.

The exposure of the later stories involving the generals talks with China overshadowed the lede.

Woodward/Costa seemed astonishingly ill-prepared to the right backlash and the main stream media indifference of their stories.
Look at their Twitter feeds, they are still trying to push, they are trying to sell 3 day old fish.

It appears that they were waiting for the red carpet to be rolled out for them and their book and got relegated to stories after the weather report.

Since I told my iMac to “always trust” the DST Root CA X3 cert I have not had any further access problems to websites.

But once again, what good is a cert if I have to tell my computer to always trust it? Technically it is an expired cert. Why would one design a security system so when a part expires one just keeps trucking on as if there is no problem?

Our modern digital connectedness may seem like a wonderful thing, but underneath the veneer of interoperability lay a minefield of future disasters, I fear.

Reminds me of the old Australian joke.

A guy is out boating, and unfortunately, the boat sinks. He starts swimming for shore. All the time he is worried about the possibility of crocodiles when he gets to the shore.

As he is paddling to shore he sees a man walking along the beach. From some distance out, he yells to the beachwalker.

Finally the guy gets the beachwalker’s attention. Still keeping a good distance from the beach, he yells to the beachwalker “Is it safe to land here? Are there any crocodiles?”

The beachwalker stops and thinks for a second and then yells back. “No, there aren’t any crocodiles here. The sharks got them all.”

There is currently an ongoing discussion on how plant based food products fit into Jewish dietary laws.

Impossible Pork is here — but the plant-based meat won’t be certified as kosher

“The Impossible Pork, we didn’t give an ‘OU’ to it, not because it wasn’t kosher per se,” said Rabbi Menachem Genack, the CEO of the Orthodox Union’s kosher division. “It may indeed be completely in terms of its ingredients: If it’s completely plant-derived, it’s kosher. Just in terms of sensitivities to the consumer … it didn’t get it.”

For Jews who keep kosher, the Impossible Burger has allowed some food experiences that would otherwise be off-limits because of the prohibition in dietary law on mixing milk and meat. For the last five years, Jews and kosher restaurants have been able to serve up cheese-topped chili, greasy cheeseburgers, and that quintessential American diner pairing: a hamburger with a milkshake.

…snip…

But Genack said he and others at the OU recalled what happened when they once certified “bacon” that wasn’t made of pig.

“We still get deluged with calls from consumers who either don’t get it or they’re uncomfortable with it,” he said.

One of the wisest things associated with the Apostle Paul was his comment that just because Christians didn’t have to not eat something that didn’t mean that we should if it caused other people problems. So he said, yeah, it was legal to eat temple sacrificed meat but it it caused people trouble or to backslide? Then don’t. It seems to me this is a similar thing. I saw Bob Dylan at Red Rocks in 2007. He gets a lot of bad press for his shows but that show for me was everything I expected and much more. It was a solid set, two hours, opened with “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” *and he played the guitar for that one!* I knew it was going to be a great show during that first number, people were ecstatic! Because Bob was playing a guitar, which he doesn’t do onstage anymore (he usually always plays piano). He played a mix of his best tunes from the 60s with the best tunes from his albums from “Time Out Of Mind” to “Modern Times,” a splendid setlist for my ears. I’m glad I got in that show.

Many are not delusional but just evil. “Peril” contained interesting anecdotes but was not a deep dive into all that happened. Cleta Mitchell was not mentioned in its pages but she seemed to have been a key player. She is one of many who want democracy to be discarded and a right wing minority granted permanent rule over our nation. The efforts to push state legislation to ignore the popular vote are part of a concerted plot, not by deluded Trump fanatics, but by people in full possession of their faculties.

This is consistent with any top-down hierarchic organization. If all authority flows from above, then all responsibility must necessarily land there, and they motivated to keep everything under wraps rather than to accept the role they played in enabling such activity.

Nah, not anyone. They absolutely bend over backwards to avoid blaming Republicans for anything. The only time they do is when they can pull a ‘both sides same thing’ and lay blame at Dems feet to imply that they’re still worse in some way.

re: #107 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I have seen a few bits, but I have not sat down to watch SNL since the mid-seventies.

I watched a number of 21st century SNL during 2016-2017. Before that, the last time I had watched with any regularity was around the time of the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, and before that, the 1987-88 season.

I was watching fairly regularly after Dick Ebersole saved the series after the Jean Doumanian disaster of 1980, which I skipped. I also skipped the disastrous 1985 season when Lorne returned - the one with Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell -Smith, Robert Downey, Jr., Randy Quaid and Joan Cusack.

I didn’t start watching until the 1978-79 season, when I was in seventh grade, and that was probably in part because one of the younger, hipper TV critics in the local newspaper would chronicle particularly successful and unsuccessful instalments in his Monday write-ups.

Cloven hooves and rumination are the requirements for a kosher animal. The reason swine are not kosher is because they are not ruminates.

AFAIK the Godless Scientist who created the ‘pig’ ticked all the kosher dietary restrictions so I’m sure rumination was also a feature (it’s a long time since I read the story, as I said it was a very minor piece to begin with). I don’t recall what the ending was but I think it involved the rebbe biting into a rasher of ‘bacon’ after determining that the animal it came from wasn’t actually a pig but a totally new form of life.

Yes yes I know it’s not that easy to bio-edit a lifeform as complicated as a mammal and have it thrive and reproduce but it was written a long time ago and SF to start with.

Reading between the lines, the OU, in kosher certifying the ‘bakon’ apparently got some ‘emphatic pushback’. It sounds like after that, they decided to reflect the consensus rather than getting in front of it.

According to Google, OU-D means that the product is dairy or has been on dairy equipment.

re: #140 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

If products are made using dairy equipment but which themselves contain no dairy, the designation is OU-DE. OU-D means the product contains some non-trivial amount of dairy. This is why I can’t marinate chicken in vegan yogurt.

I was curious about “barn pot”, so did a little dive. It means ninny, idiot, or fool.

Which is actually quite mild in the world of English insults. A stretching of the older “barnpot” (same meaning), but originally “barm pot or barmpot”, barm being a frothy brewer’s yeast (citation: Old Eng boerma) that formed on top-fermenting ales.

So a barmpot is literally a man with a head full of foam or bubbles.

And speaking of that high school dropout who had a pal take the GED for her…

‘I better start something’: Lauren Boebert explains how she trolls ‘when I don’t see a headline attacking me’

During an interview on OAN, Boebert said that she had made an “error” by using campaign funds to pay utility and rent bills.

“It was an error,” the lawmaker insisted. “Some money came out of the wrong account and we corrected it, self-reported it right away, talked to the FEC. Everything’s fine. We sent a letter.”

“And Democrats want to make a story about it,” she continued. “When I don’t see a headline attacking me, I kind of wonder if I’m not doing something right. Like, wait a second, where are the attacks today? I better start something.”

What she really needs is to be whacked in the face with a custard pie.

She’s nothing but a saboteur.

As one of her constituents, who voted for her, I am so angry with Sinema. She thinks she can be John McCain, Maverick, but no, she doesn’t even begin to have his chops (and, to be very honest, I was annoyed with him too). She needs to put a sock in it and do what her constituents sent her there to do. Because she will get primaried and I will support anyone who runs against her.
