For those uninterested or maybe not sure, the Republican platform has evolved from just lying all the time to outright hostility towards elections in general.

We have numerous candidates for upcoming elections openly promising they will personally step in and not certify elections where Democrats win or substitute their own personal selection of electors in upcoming elections.

Is anybody aware of this?

Screw that. You don’t follow someone into the bathroom with a camera. You want to ambush her on the way out, fine, but you do not follow her in that is threatening AF

No, FUCK THAT. She won’t talk to her constituents, but she will hold fundraising events and try to hide from us. WE’RE TIRED. Frankly, I hope Kyrsten Sinema was shocked…shocked into realizing that her constituents are pissed off!

I’m not going to criticize the kids, because they were braver than me to take their case directly to the slippery, evasive belly up to the trough senator from Arizona. Criticize me…we’re REALLY angry here.

I’m sorry, but I strongly disagree, even if there’s plenty to excoriate Sinema for.

There’s two places one should have a reasonable expectation of privacy: the bedroom and the bathroom. However, in the case of Sinema (and Manchin), everywhere else is fair game.

San Juan Mountains, about a three hour drive south southwest from where I’m at. On exceptionally clear days you can see Mt. Sneffels all the way in Grand Junction 100 miles to the north. I climbed Mt. Sneffels way back during my first stint in college in Gunnison, CO. I took two SUV loads of kids up that mountain, had to take over driving from this Finnish dude who volunteered his Chevy Tahoe, he got too scared driving up Yankee Boy Basin.

That poor Finnish dude, only one in the group who didn’t summit. We got close to the crux of the (standard) route. The steepness and exposure, while not really crazy, is still enough to make people scared of heights really nervous. He was hyperventilating and cursing in Finnish. I finally told him there’s no shame in turning around if he felt too uncomfortable, he did. We were about 30 yards from the summit.

That day I was with a couple of people who were on their first 14,000 ft. mountain climb. One dude asked me to take a picture of him naked on the summit, I obliged.

The Snake Couloir? That’s hardcore. Could I ski it? Sure. But you have to get up there first.

Considering a brief vacation while still on the other side of the globe, an opportunity arose that seemed intriguing.
Pros: Dirt-cheap airfare international tickets (~40$ for an international round trip total), good vacation hotels and apartment options, have my regional full-vaccination ID documentation, and tickets are still available for a rare reunion tour performance of a band I grew up on and really wanna see live (Genesis).
Cons: It’s the UK and maybe it’s just me but it seems like things there are going worse with each passing day; would need to pay for a $100+ “Day 2” COVID test; if results are delayed, would mess up my return flight; and if positive, would force me to self-quarantine somehow in a foreign country for 14 days on what’s supposed to be a 4/5-day trip.
Legitimate travel concerns in the COVID era, or am I being too paranoid at this stage?

Sorry about that DF.

Been away for a bit, busy with some new shit and new distractions.

So tonight Wife Unit says ‘hey there’s (stuff) can you do something with it like make a paella?’

I thought it’s not paella without a paella pan, saffron, spanish chorizo. So I said sure, why not?

So I made rice in a pan with chicken base and lots of turmeric and a little pepper. Looks like saffron!

Chopped up Portugese sausage and sweated in my cast iron skillet. Once colored, added garlic, carrot, and onion. While that was cooking, chopped a freezer tilapia fillet up and got about 6 shrimp. Mixed in a bowl with a little olive oil and spices. Pulled the sausage/veggies schmutz out and put in bowl with uncooked shrimp and tilapia. In oiled hot skillet, put the just cooked rice in and patted down a touch. Needs good contact. Put the schmutz in the bowl over the top of the rice in an even layer. 450 broil for 10 minutes then 450 oven for another 10 then about 20 out of the oven under foil and a blanket.

While not paella, it was killer. Got a little toast on the rice where it met the pan.

Called my sister-in-law in Granger TX for her 75th birthday (small town just east of Georgetown). Her younger son and his 13-year-old live with her; her older son lives next door. She has diabetes, neuropathy, is in generally lousy shape. Sons and grandson not vaxxed; she had the Moderna shot #1 but never went back for the second. Fox-watching right-wing evangelical bible-thumpers.

So you guessed it, she spent her birthday in quarantine. Our great-nephew has covid — no school for ten days. He wasn’t feeling too bad when I talked to his grandma, but we’re keeping fingers crossed. His dad was feeling crappy but had tested negative; also off work for ten days and has to keep testing. Sister-in-law tested negative so far, still worried about her.

I think she has enough sense left to not take the horse paste. Maybe. I hope. I pray.

I don’t want to go to Texas right now, and especially not for a funeral, dammit!

I visited a guy I’ve known since elementary school at his and his S.O.’s cabin near the shores of Torch Lake, Michigan early last month, I may have posted about it on the Internet.

Anyhoo, my friend got vaccinated as soon as he could. His S.O.? No. Her immediate family (mother especially) is totally gone down the Trump Kool-Aid Train, and she admits this and is ashamed about it. But vaccines? She *listens* to her mother and follows the (in)appropriate rabbit holes on the internet. The night before I left to drive back to Colorado *she* broached the subject herself. “I’m not getting the vaccine. Have you heard that all these people have died from the vaccine?” Well, I said it probably seven times, “That’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not true.” I was kind of dejected after our conversation. My friend brought me to the side out of earshot of his S.O. and he said “You see what I’m dealing with, here?”

So yeah. Stubborn pride and refusal of reason seem to win out even over self preservation in too many instances across our great land. Goddamnit.

It was bad enough when I read a bunch of Kos diaries about terminally ill white people who refused to sign up for Obamacare because of their hatred of the black man in the White House.

What shocks me more is the exponential number of white Republicans willing to die for the Party goaded into doing that by Republican officeholders, right wing propaganda channels, Hate Radio and Xtian churches.

Thanks to the Republican Party we may get Covid under control in 10-15 years…as the white racist base dies off…if we are lucky…

And this, my friend’s S.O. … I’m worried sick about her. I love her. She’s kind of made a man out of my friend, who was kind of well known in my hometown as a malcontent. Her and my friend *need* each other. And one of the last things I said to her before I got in my car and drove back to Colorado was “If you get covid and die you’re going to break my fucking heart.”

That was three weeks ago. She still won’t get vaccinated.

Japan will have a new prime minister this time tomorrow, and his name is Fumio Kishida. He will be Japan’s 100th Prime Minister since the establishment of representative democracy in the late 1880s. He’s a former Foreign Minister, among other things. He plans on dissolving the Diet on October 14 and calling elections for October 31, to get a mandate.

The surprise move, amid widespread expectations for a poll in November, appears to be aimed at exploiting a traditional honeymoon period accorded to new governments and a sharp drop in the number of coronavirus infections.

*snip*

“Kishida’s not wasting any time at all,” Tobias Harris, a senior fellow of the Center for American Progress, said on Twitter.

“October 31 puts the opposition on its heels, takes advantage of a honeymoon in the polls, plus a better chance of lower case numbers.”

Harris added, “If he wins comfortably in the general election and can hold things together well enough to win the upper house elections next year, he’ll have up to three years without an election.”

reuters.com

The previous guy, Yoshihide Suga, who came in a year ago, steadily sunk in popularity because he’s more or less fucked up Japan’s COVID response.

Calling elections quickly is pretty smart, because while COVID infections have dropped sharply, vaccine uptake is still slow and end of the year parties (a huge deal in Japan) are coming up. I once read a Japanese police procedural (in English translation, my Japanese is not that good) where one of the subplots was how one character had screwed up making the reservations for the end of year party and was spending a LOT of time trying to fix his mistake.

She might be more moved by the idea of kidney disease for the rest of her life. Or being unable to work for a year. Or the other consequences of long covid.

After all, if it kills you, you have nothing else to worry about, but chronic lung disease is life changing.

Czech Republic has made the international headlines - and not for anything good…..

Andrej Babiš, the billionaire Czech prime minister, is under pressure to explain a convoluted offshore structure he used to finance his purchase of a £13m mansion in the south of France.

The disclosure that Babiš controls a group of overseas companies comes as he contests a general election in the Czech Republic this week - and represents the latest embarrassing turn for a former oligarch who entered politics promising to fight corruption. Babiš is the second-richest man in the Czech Republic with a net worth of £2.7bn but his previous business dealings have provoked public protests and an ongoing clash with the EU.

theguardian.com

We have elections coming up here this Friday and Saturday - Babiš’ supporters will likely not be disillusioned, as their cult-like devotion to the man is perhaps only rivalled by the Trump cult.

The general feeling with political academics seems to be that voters don’t directly care that politicians lie, but do care if they feel that the politician sold them out. So it depends how it gets interpreted by the public.

Heh. Alabama is spending $400,000 Yankee dollars, sent here for Coronavirus relief, on building prisons. Even better, we are skipping the competitive bidding rules to deal with two pre-selected contractors. Total of $1,300,000,000 to feed the school-to-prison pipeline.

The prison construction bill lawmakers passed carves out an exception to the state’s standard competitive bid process on public works projects for the two new prisons and allows direct negotiations with the contractors.

Russia hits record number of daily COVID-19 deaths for the fifth time this week. Only 32.5% of its people have gotten at least one vaccine shot and only 28% are fully vaccinated. #GetVaccinatedNow

The concern is that the number of people willing to get vaccinated but haven’t is pretty damn small now. The Russian state media has been trying to fuck up the West by pushing out all sorts of anti-vax crap in their foreign operations, but didn’t seem to realize that Russians read that shit too and it blew back. Add to that the sort of conspiratorial mindset that the Kremlin has been too happy to abuse for decades, plus a relaxation of COVID restrictions because of the joke of an election that just happened, and boom.

Now the government has announced all mass events are to be cancelled. Since the election is over, the Kremlin doesn’t have much use for any of them anyways, so there’s that. I assume that this will be enforced arbitrarily based on political needs, like everything else. I can’t think of any way that this will end without everyone getting infected, with the vaccinated doing fine (assuming the other non-Sputnik vaccines actually work), and the rest going full redstate.

Goddamnit.

‘heard’?
no i haven’t ‘heard’

what’s their source
do they actually know anything?

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We had some much needed rain overnight, but I’m sure folks out west would love to see rain to help deal with the wildfires and ongoing red flag warnings. Climate change is real, and it’s ongoing.

But that’s not the worldwide crisis that I’m most concerned about at the moment. That would be the ongoing pandemic and the way media outlets report on it.

There’s no both sides to this crisis. You’re either supporting public health, or you’re supporting covid spread. There’s no in-between.

Headlines that tout that X number of people are being fired from jobs because of refusal to adhere to vaccine mandates may sensationalize and give the appearance of widespread refusal.

When you look at the actual percentage of people being fired for cause by refusing to vaccinate, you realize that it’s a fraction of a percentage in many cases. NC health care system: 175 fired. Out of 35,000 people. That’s 0.5%. It’s a rounding error.

We see something similar wherever you look.

These people refusing to vaccinate, and claiming that *this* vaccine somehow violates their religious freedoms, didn’t refuse all the other vaccines they’re required to get to be nurses or doctors or teachers or even military servicemembers.

It’s bullshit, and their refusal to vaccinate should be followed by termination for cause.

Not a single religious group out there objects to vaccines, especially during a pandemic. Not the Roman Catholic Church. Not Islam. Not Judaism. Vaccines preserve and protect life. Refusal to vaccinate endangers everyone around them.

What these people are objecting on is their personal beliefs, which is not a protected class for purposes of vaccinations. States need to eliminate all non-medical exemptions to vaccinations. I’ve got zero tolerance for this BS, and the reason we have an enduring pandemic here in the US is because far too few people vaccinate, far too few people are willing to mask until they’re fully vaccinated, and too many people are fucking sociopaths who don’t care about themselves, anyone else, or how many people they can sicken or die for their freedumb to not mask. These are many of the same people who wouldn’t go anywhere without their guns (photos of which show that they’d be target one by a bad guy with a gun because they have no clue how oblivious they are to their surroundings).

Guns are talisman of safety that do nothing to improve safety and health, but masks are verbotten because right wing lunatics from Trump on down politicized all this from the get-go.

Mandates work.

NYS nursing homes, which is where the pandemic hit hardest in the first wave, had a precariously low vaccination rate until the mandates were enacted.

And they remained low right up to the moment that it became clear that the nursing homes and state would not back down and insisted on vaccinations or else termination letters would be forthcoming.

What happened?

High compliance rates. Like 95%+ compliance rates.

re: #114 ericblair

Yep. Karma for spreading antivaxx crap in the West is biting them back so ferociously that you’d swear it had Rabies… And yeah, it’s gonna end in a GQP state scenario, if not worse… And as I recall, Sputnik (the two-dose, not the “Light”) appears to be a decent vaccine, tho there were apparently corners cut during development which means you could theoretically get an Adenovirus infection (but it’s not a biggie unless you have certain underlying conditions).

besides if you ‘heard’ and i didnt, how do we know what you ‘heard’ is the right take?

At this point, almost all of us know at least one person who has died from the virus. We’ve seen reports of prominent people who have died of it.

More people have been vaccinated than have had covid. If there have been many deaths or bad reactions to the vaccine, most of us should know someone in that category. We should have heard the tales of the more famous. I hear nothing…

While we have news reports saying “45 people had breakthrough infections” when that number represents 1% of 1% of those vaccinated. They would be reporting moderate deaths from the vaccine nonstop.

I wonder if antivaxxers will also refuse to take the Merck pill. If the vax is a bridge too far, maybe this weirdo untested pill is as well.

If that’s confusing, it’s because they’re BSing each other that Merck denied ivermectin is the “miracle drug” they claim it is in order to sell a more expensive drug that “does the same thing.”

It has to be used within 5 days of the first symptoms appearing in order to be effective.

Meanwhile, as was demonstrated when DeathSantis opened the monoclonal antibody treatment centers, most of the anti-vaxxers wait until they’re practically on death’s door to admit they might need treatment. And there’s stories aplenty from healthcare workers of anti-vaxxers continuing to deny they’re infected right up to the moment they get tubes jammed down their throats.

There was a vote scheduled, as per an agreement made with the corporate Dems. Pelosi even drug it out for hours, going so far to reschedule it for the following morning, before pulling it because she lacked the numbers needed to pass it. And instead of working with the progressive caucus to get their support, she and Schumer huddled in a room in the Senate basement with Manchin and Sinema in the hope they could come up with another empty promise that would get the vote to go through as scheduled.

Remember that for book keeping purposes, different parts of a company “sell” goods to each other, in the sense that the costs are apportioned from one department to another, from say the factory to the warehouse.

This little trick is highly important when dealing with international companies with differing tax rates so that the actual money that is earned from outside is generated in a location with the lowest possible taxes.

To be fair, his actions likely wouldn’t have differed, at least not by much. But seeing as he’s up to his eyebrows in all sorts of dubious shenanigans, it instantly raises questions. It also doesn’t help that a few hours ago, he:

a) denied he owned the property

b) admitted he owned the property

c) denied he owned it again

d) said he got a great price on the property and was happy with it

It’s not a civility issue, it’s a security issue. Any high-profile lawmaker, male or female, should be justifiably freaked. She was trapped in a room with one exit by an unfriendly crowd.

That goes for Sinema, AOC, Murkowski, or Rand Paul. In this atmosphere, people are being killed in the Capitol building.

True for both security and civility issues. Also for really, really bad optics. Trapping someone in a bathroom stall AND FILMING IT is way over all sorts of lines. It doesn’t matter how mad or how desperate the protesters were, it’s going to backfire. It makes people who can’t stand her have to sympathize; it gives her cover for her next contrarian moves; and it sets a very nasty precedent. Look to see the thugs on the right adopt this to harass other (usually female) targets, and justify themselves by saying “The Left does it!”

An 18-year-old California woman was scheduled to be taken off of life support over the weekend after a school resource officer shot her in reported violation of the district’s use of force policy. Manuela “Mona” Rodriguez, a new mother, was not enrolled at the Millikan High School campus she was shot near, and the school resource officer, who is employed by the Long Beach Unified School District, does not work for any police department, CNN reported.

Chris Eftychiou, a spokesman for the Long Beach Unified School District, told CNN in a statement that the officer was responding to an “off-campus” incident last Monday when he spotted a fight between an 18-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl. He watched Rodriguez and two other people try to flee in a car and fired as it sped off. Rodriguez was the front-seat passenger in the car. Her partner drove the vehicle, and his 16-year-old brother was also a passenger in the car, CNN reported.

“According to a use-of-force policy from Long Beach Unified’s school safety office, officers are not permitted to fire at a moving vehicle,” Los Angeles Times writers Richard Winton and Hayley Smith wrote. “Firearms may be discharged only when reasonably necessary and justified under the circumstances, such as self-defense and the protection of others, the policy states. The policy also bars shooting at fleeing suspects.”

Iran Rodriguez, Manuela’s older brother, called for the officer, whose name has not been released, to be prosecuted. Iran spoke at a news conference for the family to announce the devastating news of Manuela’s state on Friday. “I raised that little girl,” he said. “The officer needs to be charged.”

Trump ‘photographer’ candidate scrubs QAnon from website as conspiracy group ‘infiltrates’ local races

A QAnon “true believer” who is running for mayor in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has scrubbed references to the conspiracy group from his campaign merchandise website.

Gene Ho, a minor MAGA celebrity who claims to have served as former president Donald Trump’s personal campaign photographer, has repeatedly endorsed the QAnon conspiracy theory over the years — even emceeing the group’s “Red Pill Roadshow” last year. But since launching his mayoral campaign, Ho has tried to distance himself from QAnon and run as a “milquetoast MAGA candidate” — removing items from the site such as a mug bearing the slogan “WWG1WGA” (Where We Go 1, We Go All) and a T-shirt saying “Get WQke,” according to a report from Rolling Stone.

Singapore appears to have an explosion in cases due to delta, with the highest level of morbidity and mortality since the start of the pandemic. Their current mortality rate is still far less than the United States. Several weeks ago I watched a report (somewhere on CNN) which explained that although they had access to mRNA vaccines, many citizens preferred Sinovac — which was less effective before delta struck.

Isn’t the problem with production and not development?

I have a gay Republican buddy who is just like that: contrarian, cantankerous and ready to to take on anything he sees as “accepted policy”.

His parents were radical leftist college professors, so his way of rebelling against them was to be clean-cut and conservative. Yet he somehow still reconciles his Conservative faith with the fact that he is married to a man who he would not be able to be legally married to if the GOP had its way.

He tried to tell me that gay marriage was irrelevant to him, it was just his husband who wanted to tie the knot.

He is also anti-mask.

Now last year in the spring, his husband was in a bad car accident, had several ribs crushed and had to be put on a respirator. Thanks to masking, there was an ICU bed open for his husband.

And thanks to gay marriage, he was able to visit his hubby in the hospital.

No thanks to my ex-GF, likewise from my University of Arizona days, who went on to become an Arizona assistant AG and went on to draft most of the anti-gay marriage initiatives in that state.

But that’s another story…

China say that its claim to the sea is based both on the Law of the Sea Convention and its so-called ‘nine-dash’ line. This line extends for 2,000 kilometers from the Chinese mainland, encompassing over half of the sea. However in an historic decision in 2016, the international tribunal in The Hague ruled against part of China’s claims to the sea.

The US, UK and Australia routinely conduct freedom of navigation operations (or FONOPs) to challenge what Washington calls “attempts by coastal states to unlawfully restrict access to the seas”.

I’ll take “Consequences of Brexit” for $500:

British expats are said to be leaving Spain “in droves”, with numerous retirees abandoning the popular area of Costa del Sol as a result of Brexit.

Travel experts have noticed a decrease in the number of Brits in the country due to more stringent immigration rules brought in after the UK left the European Union.

Robert Barnhardt, a property expert who runs an estate agency in the seaside town of Fuengirola, said many retired people are now starting to sell their properties.

Due to Brexit, UK citizens can only visit Spain without a visa for up to three months for tourism and businesses purposes.

Could Hitler have been defeated by passive resistance? Peaceful marches? Different approaches for different situations — but bringing a knife to a gun fight, except in a Quentin Tarantino film, usually is unsuccessful.

Looking at the top page of downdetector, it seems more than just FB has problems, just from the spread my hunch is that routers got fouled in terms of routing tables, or that some important network infrastructure fell over.

If it’s DNS, as some people have been suggesting, that would suggest that a major DNS provider may have pushed a bad configuration. That’s going to take time to flush.

The Wiemar communists and other left groups took street violence as far as it would go. That only fed the reaction.

Exactly. You cannot use passive resistance against the forces of evil. You have to use force, as unpleasant as it is.

Bannon and his ilk are a direct threat to the American system of governance and the Constitution itself. And the Constitution allows for defending the country against “domestic enemies”….which Bannon most assuredly is.

How would George Washington have dealt with Steve Bannon? I’m pretty confident that answer would involve a short length of rope and a sturdy tree.

Could this at all be related to the problem of the other day when some certification went bad?

Another possibility is a major attack by Russian hackers to bring down our systems.

Or that some authoritarian country tried to block by poisoning the DNS locally, but it escaped into the wild. And yeah, it’s gonna take hours if not days to flush.

No, this is not related to the certificate errors from the other day. (Side question: Did LetsEncrypt ever resolve that, or did they say “tough noogies”?) This is on a more fundamental level than that problem, and is a much bigger deal - and, correspondingly, much more of a pain in the ass to clean up.

I’ve been thinking about how activists approached Sinema yesterday and I am still in agreement with what they did. They didn’t threaten her, beyond saying stuff relating to making sure she doesn’t get elected again. They didn’t bang on the stall door or say one thing that could be considered violent, hateful or threatening. They told the truth to a person who rarely spends time doing senate business in her own state. Maybe if she could make the time for the people who elected her that might have helped. These were college students who believed in her and she basically told them all to fuck off. IMO this needs to happen more, not less. A public restroom is where Sinema went to hide. She washed her hands and went into a stall, hiding. No one answers their calls in her local office, no email responses, no responses at all. So are they supposed to just be nice and polite and then what? The video shows nothing awful happening, no threats, no violence and not one open carry idiot with a flag on their shirt to be seen anywhere. It wouldn’t matter if they confronted her in the bathroom or the parking lot, the usual suspects will make them into antifaillegalsterrorizingamerica!!!!

She could have defused this by stopping for a few minutes and not being a smart ass jerk. She’s there to collect a paycheck no one makes her work for. This may likely backfire, but it’s because of our fucking stupid media and social media being sociopathic, not these young people fighting for their future. You will NEVER win this war without crossing some boundaries. And again, this is a public bathroom, those young women weren’t breaking any laws or rules.

(Sits down with a cup of coffee with a lid, just in case someone throws something at me….)

Justa good ole Log Cabin Republican.
