Nobel prize in physics to a trio, one of whose research was in complexity (in physical systems), the other two in foundational research into atmospheric complexity:

Former NOAA scientist Suki Manabe shares Nobel Prize in Physics for pioneering climate prediction

Today, Syukuro “Suki” Manabe, 90, was named among the winners of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking climate science achievements. His pioneering research in the 1960s laid the foundation for how scientists perceive the Earth’s climate and how human actions continue to influence it.

My PhD supervisor just won the Nobel prize in physics - here’s how his research on complex systems changed science

The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2021 has been jointly awarded to Italy’s Giorgio Parisi, Japan’s Syukuro Manabe and Germany’s Klaus Hasselmann for their “groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex systems”.

That’s sort of interesting to see since I am currently reading an alt-history timeline where France does not fall in mid-1940 and the war essentially goes pear-shaped for Germany from that point. At the point I am at in very early 1942 the western Allies are deep into Germany and Commonwealth troops have crossed the Elbe headed towards Berlin.

Too much tentacle porn in this guy’s rotation, I guess:

CONCORD, N.H. —

Gov. Chris Sununu has publicly called out a fellow State House Republican who he said is “detached from reality.”

State Rep. Ken Weyler made headlines in September when Health and Human Services Commissioner Lori Shibinette confronted him at a hearing for spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Now, Sununu has spoken out after continued accusations from Democrats that Weyler had continued to share vaccine misinformation with members of the fiscal committee he chairs.

That misinformation reportedly included stories that the vaccine is full of live creatures with tentacles and contains 5G technology to control peoples’ thoughts.

Sununu blasted Weyler’s “absurd” emails and called on the House Speaker to remove Weyler from chairmanship of the fiscal committee.

Well, Microsoft Windows 11 came out today. Woo…… Hoo….. :\

Windows 11 review: An unnecessary replacement for Windows 10
Windows 11 contains some good ideas. But it also feels like Microsoft made some fundamental changes to Windows for no good reason.

Our Verdict

A decidedly mixed bag of improved features and unnecessary changes. Windows 11 will undoubtedly improve over time, but it’s a very polarizing upgrade that many users will want to forgo for now.

Reminds me of the old joke…
If Apple were to make a car, what feature would it drop?

Ok, please don’t read too much into this, but over the pandemic period I would talk to my dog on walks and ask her “can you smell covid?” “Would you tell me if you could?”

And that has recently morphed into what I think would be a funny two-frame cartoon:

Man comes home after getting a diagnosis of terminal cancer and rails at his dog: “I thought you were supposed to be able to sniff this stuff out!!”

Dog in thought bubble: “I didn’t have the heart to tell you.”

Ars Technica has a similar review. Worth skimming over.

Frankly I think Win11 looks like a load of crap. The only reason I keep Win10 around is because 1) my employer has a weird VPN that allegedly requires a Win-only client, and 2) I still play some Win-only games. I’m more than happy to use just about any Linux distro as a daily driver. I have a Chromebook for screwing around on the web when I’m half-ass watching movies on the couch.

If they weren’t so damned expensive I’d consider going the Macbook route. I am pretty much a noob at Mac OS and I would like to learn enough to be able to use it as a power-user.

Gee. My younger sister misread something in the local school curriculum that stated that children who have special needs get a curriculum made for them. She thought that it meant that she could tell the teachers how to teach her children. Thankfully my late dad who had been a teacher for close to forty years straightened her out in that regard.

Yup, I also think that I will hold off on upgrading.

I still remember the Windows of the past century where every version had random parts that did things differently than the previous version. And, of course, as soon as one figured out how to work the new version, MS created a newer version of Windows that did things, yup, differently.

I have very little experience with Apple’s OS. And many folks here, who I highly respect, have high regard for it.

However, from what little I have seen, it seems to require that you do things exactly their way. Which does not always seem like the best way to do a specified task. Basically it always felt to me like “Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated”.

So, I think that I will stick with Windows and Linux.

Among other software, at work I had DR’s GEM and when MS came out with Windows 2.1 many in the office of course switched to that from the first Windows (and many had just been using plain old DOS.)

Never was impressed with Windows. I had switched to using Macs early, but for compatibility I also had a PC. So of necessity I had Windows (original, 2.something, 3.misc). But GEM was just easier to use.

Regardless, the landscape of our first-world society has been affected by Windows and the sprawling suburbs of Seattle have been all the happier as Microsoft employees turned out to be better off than the prior Boeing employees.

It took a long time and a couple of job changes to end up at a place that would issue to me a Mac for work. Most of my career as a home Mac user has been using a Dell at work. For a time I was pretty good at navigating the small idiosyncrasies between the Microsoft software between them. I don’t really have to do that anymore since most of those differences have been ironed out or are easily overcome in my basic-needs work.

27
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Oct 5, 2021 • 4:51:10pm

One reason I had liked the original GEM is that it was like my Mac.

This of course was a problem and Apple saw to it that DR had to change GEM.

This era of personal computing software was much more exciting than today because of the newness of using a computer at home or at your office (which prior had been supported by terminals to a mini-computer or mainframe.)

Small computers these days are vastly more sophisticated as is the software.

YET, there were programs for my MacII that I still miss. All sorts of applications that were powerful and easy to use but today don’t exist. Sure, the same functionality today can be found online or in bloated apps, but for much more money or worse yet much more commitment in time learning how to use.

Since you asked yesterday for a Murdaugh update, here’s the latest super sleazy story relating to the housekeeper and the settlement he “arranged” for her sons:

Alex Murdaugh diverted more than $3.5 million in death settlement money meant for the sons of his family’s deceased housekeeper to an account said to be fraudulent, according to new court documents filed Tuesday…

Copies of checks are attached to the filing showing the exact dollar amounts of death settlement money that was approved in court by a circuit judge but never reached its intended recipients. The checks had a false name for its recipient and were sent to a P.O. Box in Hampton…

From the union:

“For more than a year throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Kellogg workers around the country have been working long, hard hours, day in and day out, to produce Kellogg ready-to-eat cereals for American families.

“Kellogg’s response to these loyal, hardworking employees has been to demand these workers give up quality health care, retirement benefits, and holiday and vacation pay. The company continues to threaten to send additional jobs to Mexico if workers do not accept outrageous proposals that take away protections that workers have had for decades.

“Kellogg is making these demands as they rake in record profits, without regard for the well-being of the hardworking men and women who make the products that have created the company’s massive profits. “

(In 2020, Kellogg’s global operating profit amounted to about 1.76 billion U.S. dollars.)

You know what’s anti-democratic? A senator who has no town halls, no office hours, takes no phone calls or meetings with constituents, and just votes the way she wants with wanton disregard to what the people who elected her actually want, and ducks into a bathroom to avoid talking to them when they’re finally mad enough to confront her. Fuck off with your both-siderism and focus on the real issue, which is that the elected representatives of this country - technically in both parties (here’s looking at you, Boris and Natasha) but far more prevalent in the GQP - are absolutely ignoring the will of the electorate in favor of their own PERSONAL power and financial gain. They care NOTHING for the people they were elected to serve, and THAT is the real problem here.

I don’t know about this.

The only explanation for why AG Garland is moving so slow (if at all) against Trump that makes sense to me is that he knows he’ll have to bring an absolutely bulletproof case against him, as well as his allies, because if he fails, Trump will get worse.

A lot worse.

Consider what Trump did when the Mueller probe fell flat, and then when the first impeachment failed.

He got worse, right?

Maybe he’s hoping one of the state probes will succeed and spare the DOJ the appearance of partisan prosecutions, so soon after Bill Barr. That’s a possibility.

I’d like to think this is what’s going on, but it feels like happy talk.

I’m really worried nothing will happen and Trump and his allies will go free.

[Embedded content]

The people who don’t blink an eye about a 1.7 trillion dollar tax cut for the wealthy certainly don’t care about a 1.9 trillion dollar cost of climate disasters over the past 41 years. It will be only when the cost for a given year is 1 trillion with permanent destruction of large swaths of red states that some of them may wake up. Reminder that Matt Gaetz is one of the few Republicans who apparently care about the issue.

The men had fled on foot after a highway traffic stop by Border Patrol agents, according to an arrest affidavit. The migrants later told attorneys that when found near the highway, officers made the migrants walk for about 20 minutes and climb, hands zip-tied, over a nearly 10-foot fence onto a ranch before they were arrested for trespassing by state troopers.

The migrants also said officers cut the Val Verde County landowner’s fence so a police dog could get onto the ranch property, a defense attorney and prosecutor told The Texas Tribune.

Here are a couple of paragraphs from the story:

“…Jerry Craft, author of Year 6 graphic novels, was set to speak virtually at a Katy ISD event on Monday morning. His engagement was quietly canceled and his books removed from district libraries after 400 Katy ISD parents demanded that the event be canceled and his books be banned, claiming that Craft’s work promotes critical race theory.

The books are currently under review, said Laura Davis, media relations for Katy ISD, meaning they have been pulled from the curriculum but have not been officially banned. Craft’s graphic novels have been winners of the Newbery Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award and Kirkus Prize for Young Readers’ Literature. His work focuses largely on the culture and experiences of modern day African-American preteens. The graphic novels are based on the actual experiences of Craft’s own two sons.”

“…In 2019 New Kid became the first graphic novel to win the Kirkus Prize in the “Young Readers’ Literature” category. A few months later, it won the 2020 John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature. It is the first graphic novel in the Newbery’s nearly 100 year history to receive the award. Craft is only the fifth African American author to land the coveted prize. On the same day, New Kid was also awarded the Coretta Scott King award for an outstanding work by an African American writer. Craft is the second person to have simultaneously won both awards in the same year.”

It’s clear to see why Rittenhouse’s lawyers want to bounce the gun possession charge before the trial begins:

Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger said if the defense wants to tell the jury that Rittenhouse was merely hunting during the August 2020 unrest, they should do so.

“They can submit evidence that the defendant had a certificate to hunt and he was engaged in legal hunting on the streets of Kenosha that night,” Binger said. “I don’t think they really want to do that.”

They really don’t. 17 year old punk stalking the streets of Kenosha during civil unrest with a loaded semiauto rifle is not the narrative they want to sell. They want the question of where and how he got the rifle dealt with before they ever stand in front of a jury because if they have to defend his possession of the rifle by arguing that he’s covered by the state’s hunting laws, the obvious question in the minds of that jury will be “What was he hunting?”

In cases like these, rulings that look like they’re intended to help the defense could just as well be because the judge is trying his best to avoid being the reason a conviction is overturned on appeal. There was a lot read into decisions to allow George Floyd’s past arrests to be brought up at trial, and that ended up having no real bearing on Chauvin’s conviction.

Lizards are our friends!!!

Blue belly lizards found to combat Lyme disease

When a black-legged tick (i. pacificus) in its nymph stage bites into the neck of a favorite host victim, the western fence lizard, something wonderful happens. “The lizard’s blood contains a substance — probably a heat-sensitive protein — that kills the Lyme disease … bacterium,” said Lane back in 1998. In other words, when this common tick nymph carrying Lyme disease bites into this common lizard, the tick nymph can no longer infect a human victim, now as a nymph or in its adult stage. Yes, the western fence lizard can slay Lyme disease bacterium. Studies have shown Lyme disease is lower in areas where the lizards occur.

Hence why they’re trying to get the judge to drop the gun possession charge, because then the narrative becomes “Young white kid came to Kenosha to protect the streets of lawless Antifa vandals and took lives in self-defense,” which they figure they’ll have an easier time selling to a jury. If the prosecution can tell the jury that Rittenhouse was already in violation the law by being armed, then “self-defense” becomes that much harder to justify.

We’ve spent the past 24 hours debriefing how we can strengthen our systems against this kind of failure. This was also a reminder of how much our work matters to people.

On the one side are bullshit artists trying to stir up anger over his vow to have FBI work with local cops to protect school board members whenever they are threatened (“they are just loving parents trying to protect their children from tyrants imposing mask mandates”); on the other side are those angry that TFG is still free and demanding immediate arrest.

My company still has not mandated vaccination; they are looking at what it will take to set up the mandatory testing infrastructure for people who don’t want to be vaccinated. re: #233 The Pie Overlord!

You can make falafel from chickpeas.

Here is the recipe for anyone who is interested:

If using dry chickpeas, soak in water overnight or for at least 6 hours.

INGREDIENTS
1¼ c. dried chickpeas, or 2 14 oz. cans, drained.
1 yellow onion
4 garlic cloves
1 jalapeno or serrano pepper
¼ c. breadcrumbs or 2 slices of bread, soaked & squeezed out
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. coriander
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp cayenne
2 Tbsp chopped parsley
2 Tbsp chopped cilantro
Vegetable oil

Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until mixture is a coarse paste. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.

Heat vegetable oil in a wok or 3-qt saucepan to 360°

Drop teaspoonfuls or the mixture into the hot oil & fry until golden, about 5 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serve in pita bread with chopped tomato & cucumber salad or coleslaw. Top with tahini and your favorite hot sauce (s’hug or harissa)

Hey Siri!

Who finances OANN?

The conspiracy-mongering cable network continues to spread lies about Donald Trump’s election loss and the Jan. 6 insurrection, and a Reuters review of court records shows the crucial role AT&T executives played in OAN’s launch in 2013.

“They told us they wanted a conservative network,” OAN founder and chief executive Robert Herring Sr. testified during a 2019 deposition obtained by Reuters. “They only had one, which was Fox News, and they had seven others on the other [leftwing] side. When they said that, I jumped to it and built one.”

The telecommunications giant has poured tens of millions of dollars into OAN, which received 90 percent of its revenue from a contract with AT&T-owned television platforms, including DirecTV, testified an OAN accountant last year.

Boris Johnson still acts as if the negative impacts of Brexit were both unforeseeable and inevitable instead of them being exactly what they should have expected for leaving the EU and turning down every other trade deal option that the EU offers other countries.

The EU had no interest in letting the UK be any sort of special exception to their basic principle of free movement of goods = free movement of people (you can’t have one without the other)

Like they care? Texas is a white supremacist state where the GQP is firmly ensconced thanks to their skills at voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression, skills they are spreading throughout our country. The winter power outage was irrelevant to their leadership and the brainwashed masses who support them. This is the future of this nation.

Interesting vote on this one. Dems all voted for her, but so did a handful of Republicans. Including Mitch McConnell.

But Sasse and Romney failed to do so. Very disgraceful.

Sigh — this is why it’s crucial for Sinema and Manchin to remain Democrats. Otherwise, do you think any judges would be approved during the Biden administration? McConnell would not allow anyone to be brought up for a vote.

Whether or not they remain Democrats is up to them. But they should understand that their power comes from Democrats having a majority, even if only slightly. They should be helping to make sure Democrats get reelected.

Every instance of gunfire at schools negatively impacts students and teachers, and makes it harder for children to learn. A Texas school study showed students at schools where a shooting occurred are more likely to repeat a grade and be absent, and less likely to go to college.

I doubt this. Both are compromised; Manchin is dumb and Sinema is crazy. Their donors and the GOP are convinced, and have them convinced, that the Dems will blink in this game of chicken and burn reconciliation on the debt ceiling. Then they can have their sweet sweet infrastructure bill without all the other annoying saving the world and feeding the poor and making sure grandpa has his pills and some new glasses and shit.

I doubt the Dems will cave even in the face of default, both because we shouldn’t negotiate with terrorists, and short term it will be very very painful for GOP billionaire backers who are all in on US bills and bonds. So either Manchin/Sinema blink or we have a bumpy ride.
