“Stairway to Heaven”

As a listener-funded station, KBOO runs a variety of fundraising offers. Once, they promised for a donation of $10,000 the station would never play “Stairway To Heaven” again. After his last set at the Aladdin Theater, Robert Plant was driving his rental car to the Oregon Coast and station-surfing, looking for non-mainstream music. That is, of course, a KBOO specialty, and the offer was repeated while Plant was lingering on the station. He liked the idea and decided to accept. He pulled over to use a pay-phone to call and make a $10,000 pledge, which he says he did using the credit card of Atco Records president Herb Abramson.

During an interview in which Plant confirmed the story, he also said that he liked the song well enough, and of course it has been very very good to him… “…but don’t you know, I’ve heard it.”

The article states that it’s only about 50% effective, and the effect only lasts about four years, but it’s against a parasite - which is more complex than a virus - and bed nets reduce deaths of those under 5 by 20%.

Shit. Rachel Maddow just said she was off work because she had skin cancer surgery. The good news is they got it all and she’s going to be ok. But she’ll have to watch for it and see a doc regularly for a long time. I’m glad she’s ok. And really glad she has a wife who noticed and access to amazing medical care.

Scoop: Manchin demands progressives prioritize

Sen. Joe Manchin (d-w.va.) is telling colleagues that progressives need to pick just one of President Biden’s three signature policies for helping working families and discard the other two, people familiar with the matter tell Axios.

Why it matters: By forcing progressives to choose among an expanded child tax credit, paid family medical leave or subsidies for child care, Manchin is complicating any potential deal— but also signaling his willingness to negotiate.

He’s also aligning himself with Democratic centrists in the House, who want to trim the number of programs in any final package but fund them for longer.
Progressives are hopeful they can retain all of their cherished programs in a final bill by funding many of them for shorter durations and therefore lower the bill’s ultimate price tag.
Manchin’s office declined to comment to Axios.
The big picture: While President Biden has scaled back his top-line number from $3.5 trillion to $2.2 trillion, Manchin stressed on Wednesday that his price cap remains at $1.5 trillion, a position aggravating Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Sanders, a leading progressive, separately told reporters there are “48 senators who support $3.5 trillion; we have two people who don’t,” referring to Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.).
“It is wrong, it is really not playing fair,” Sanders said. “Two people do not have a right to sabotage what 48 want.”
“The time is long overdue for him to tell us with specificity — not generalities, we’re beyond generalities — with specificity, what he wants and what he does not want, and to explain that to the people of West Virginia and America,” Sanders said.
Manchin’s private demand for progressive prioritization tracks with his public concern that simply trimming a program’s duration doesn’t accurately capture its true overall cost.

That’s good news.
And yeah, while “skin cancers” in general are usually considered down the list in terms of mortality, there can always be exceptions. We had a friend (a doctor, no less), who discovered a “routine” skin tumor on his temple and dealt with it in a thorough and timely manner. And it still killed him in about a year.

We have an overwhelming majority of the Democratic caucus but a bare majority of the Congress and not a majority of the Senate. In the unlikely event we manage to get a true majority in the Senate in 2022 and retain control of the House, then a more ambitious program is in reach. But now — we have to see what is possible with the 2 Democratic obstacles in the Senate.

Maybe Sinema won’t switch parties, but then McCain didn’t switch parties when he stopped the GOP efforts to kill the ACA. To pass anything, there will have to be unwelcome compromises — and a refusal to recognize that will lead to nothing being passed — and a significant reduction in the ability to improve our standing in the next election.

Though this is a rare instance in which I think Thomas Massie is right. I think its extremely unlikely we will ever fight another war in which millions of soldiers have to be conscripted, so making young men register for the draft is pointless.

Don’t agree with this.

While a conscript army might well be somewhat obsolete compared to a nation using a professional and volunteer force infantry itself is still pretty much the key organization to have. Artillery, tanks, and especially aircraft cannot take ground.

And given that most of the conflicts are low-level and often involve urban environments infantry is needed to patrol and control those - unless flattening everything is the favored method of dealing with an issue. (And even that doesn’t work since rubble is often easier to defend than intact streets and buildings since it interferes with vehicle movement.)

I would love to see the WPA revived. Its work is still visible all over the country. Lubbock, for example, is not entirely a hellhole. As I mentioned last night, the friggin’ outhouses at MacKenzie Park are works of art and look good for several complete centuries of further use at least. I forgot to mention that they were built by the WPA in 1936-37.
Today’s Repugs would go bug fuck crazy and start waving their guns if we revived it, and the Civilian Conservation Corps, let alone if we started drafting people for them. They are already bug fuck crazy and waving guns, though, so we have nothing to lose by trying. A couple of years of planting trees in the new CCC might go a long way toward turning many a snot-nosed suburban entitlement welp into an actual human being.

Four people in 15 million dead of blood clots after getting a vaccine would be a good deal less than one in a million.

Correlation is not causation — or I’d be announcing here that J&J vaccine clearly prevents blood clots. We have seen no reason to believe that it causes them.

Even if it did rarely and it might, it’s still a 0.0000267 percent death rate vs… much higher for COVID.

Yesterday I caught up to a guy on an electric longboard at a road crossing and after we crossed the street he took off on me. I shifted up gears and pedal assist to catch up, he was going over 20 MPH. When I caught up he turned off the path to a dirt trail up a small hill to a road. It handled off-road like it was nothing, I was impressed.

Two 1000W motors on the back wheels.

Adults (18+) living in Contra Costa County can apply for rebates for e-bikes purchased on or after October 1, 2020. Rebates will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, one per home address, and will be distributed until funding is exhausted.

As a career infantryman, I can state unequivocally that you’re ‘typing’ out of your ass.
Every war for the last 100 years has been infantry intensive conflicts. And the urbanization trend only points to the increased need of infantry forces to clear and hold terrain

I think the point is that those are specialized infantry tactics, not the sort of mass wave formations that were outdated after WW1. We need people who understand modern weapons systems, counter-insurgency, mechanized, amphibious and airborne tactics if we want to prevail.

Occupation of the conquered territories and the resulting casualties suffered by the ‘liberators’ was done by regular infantry which was probably a mistake.

The US War Department should really give consideration to developing a specialised branch of occupation forces who replace the ‘War Fighters’ on the ground after the defeated locals have been cowed into temporary submission. They tried this once, at the end of WWII in Germany in Japan and it worked really well — the troops who occupied the defeated nations were not the soldiers who had fought the enemy in human waves, they were more like armed police fresh from training and without the PTSD baggage that would trigger 360-degree automatic fire at a moment’s notice.

presumably it would potentially incentivize people to illegally grow, and would cause growers who follow the law to decide it isn’t worth doing that. Suddenly the people who are legally growing have the market flooded with potentially thousands of pounds of illegal weed.

On the relevance of The Infantry, I think that there are several different things going on at the same time which are obscuring the question.

1. The advent of nuclear weapons

Countries that hold nuclear weapons have tended to de-emphasize militaries. Nuclear weaponry is generally considered the primary means of defending a country from external attack. Ground combat is generally considered secondary.

2. Professional militaries

Professional militaries, on a soldier to soldier basis, have generally been considered more capable than draftee militaries. This is the case since the beginning of the written word. However, professional militaries are expensive.

Nations have on occasion needed more defense than they could afford by paying professional militaries. This resulted in some form of more universal military service. Conscription is one of the modern means. As Stalin is reputed to have said “Quantity has a quality all of its own”.

3. The infantry has become a bit more technical

Drones and other over the horizon scouting, better weaponry, better communications have created more capabilities. And they are more complex. These can be better used by better trained professionals.

4. The role of the infantry has not changed

Infantry role is to take or hold territory. If you want to capture a piece of ground or keep the enemy from taking it, you use infantry. They can be called anything you want, but in the end, they are infantry. And this role is generally where most of the casualties (combat and non-combat) occur.

In fighting recent insurgencies, the US has generally relied on our client states to provide the infantry and take the resultant heavy casualties.

This reminds me of a story my Uncle told me.

He was a navigator in a bomber during World War 2 in the Pacific. After the war as the US was demobilizing, he was stationed on a Pacific Island.

He was talking about one of his work details. Which involved pushing jeeps and other vehicles over a cliff, thus destroying them.

I of course was a bit upset that all these perfectly functional vehicles were being destroyed rather than being brought back to the US for civilian use.

He pointed out that the US Government was not in the business of competing with private businesses. The private businesses had no way of successfully competing against the federal government.

Additionally, the economy and employment were better off manufacturing new vehicles rather than shuttering factories because of a glut of military vehicles released into the country.

In comparison I think a lot of USA WW2 equipment where there were markets (China, Japan, India, etc.) went into civilian use and probably at bargain prices.

I was thinking that in a number of these countries there weren’t car manufacturers to lobby against the importation of foreign vehicles.

In other countries, I suspect that the locals were considered defeated foes and had less of a say into their future.

At the end of WW2, the US was very fortunate in one way, because the major countries we occupied had pre-existing infrastructure. Once we got that social and physical infrastructure back up and running, we could step back from running those countries.

Post-WW2 pretty much every country but the USA had a vehicle industry that was:
a) undeveloped or quite small
b) had been bombed to rubble
c) had probably converted to producing military equipment
d) the nation was broke and/or heavily in debt to the USA and was going to have trouble competing with the USA outside their domestic market
e) all of the above

And for the USA helping to rebuild Western Europe or Southeast Asia as the Cold War started would be an incentive to provide vehicles, especially trucks, to help nations get their domestic infrastructure back into running order.

One thing about the TX abortion vigilante law I’m not getting is the whole “YOU get to sue and YOU get to sue!” aspect of it. I always thought if you brought a lawsuit against someone, regardless of venue, you had to have standing in the case.

That strikes me as a common sense idea at the very minimum, if at least to try to keep nuisance lawsuits to a minimum. The TX law seems, to me, to throw all that out of the window. Like, if this law stands, it sets precedence that anyone can sue anyone, anywhere, even if you have zero connection to the case.

Shouldn’t that aspect of the TX law have caused it to be thrown out immediately? It basically turns the court system into a bigger free-for-all than it already is.

It’s bad law.

It’s intended for intimidation and trying to allow harassment to be done by non-governmental agents since the state government is not allowed to legally do it. And with some additional facets tossed in so that those who try to sue the way they want the harassment to work avoid getting punished by losing the suits and those who are being harassed have to absorb their own legal costs regardless of the result.

To be a 19th century infantryman, you had to learn how to load and fire a musket, how to form line and column and march in cadence. The only major changes were the introduction of percussion caps and rifled barrels.

But that was all something that could be taught in a matter of weeks and mastered within a few months.

Modern infantrymen have to be technical specialists in everything from weapons to chemicals to electronics. Occupation forces have to study languages and cultures and policing. That all takes years to learn and master and has to be constantly updated as technology advances.

I remember reading somewhere that at this point, all of the gold that’s been mined since the beginning of gold mining wouldn’t cover it.

Let’s start by looking at how much gold there is in the world. When we look at the world gold council it says there has been about 158,000 metric tonnes of it ever mined out of the earth. Divide that by ounces and you get about 50 billion of them. From this, we can determine that it would be 24.4 trillion grains of gold, which sounds like quite a lot. The problem is we need to divide this by the population of the US to get the most equitable distribution of wealth we can for an example.

So if we divide it by the world’s population we get 80,270 grains per person. This number isn’t as impressive as the 24.4 trillion but it leaves more questions as to what this means. What any gold-based system would have to do next is determine how many grains are in a single dollar. Roosevelt set it to about 15.25 grains per dollar, meaning each person would have about $5,259 of gold per person in the US. Even that is assuming that the US held all the gold in the world.

This leaves the US with a money supply of about 1.6 trillion dollars. Even if this fictional scenario were true it would be totally debunked by the fact the US has a debt of 16.6 trillion dollars. It would be impossible to pay down the US debt. The claim is that the US would never be in this situation if we had a gold standard, but that’s speculation. Right here and now if the US went to the gold standard it would be impossible to pay off the debt.

One thing about the TX abortion vigilante law I’m not getting is the whole “YOU get to sue and YOU get to sue!” aspect of it. I always thought if you brought a lawsuit against someone, regardless of venue, you had to have standing in the case.

That strikes me as a common sense idea at the very minimum, if at least to try to keep nuisance lawsuits to a minimum. The TX law seems, to me, to throw all that out of the window. For the most part, though, the ex-players charged had journeyman careers playing for several different teams and never reached anywhere close to the enormous stardom or salary that top players command.

Not all that “ quietly”; I was impressed by the lineup of blue-ribbon banksters Joe got to come over to the WH, and issue public statements about how a debt default would basically ruin the US economy to nobody’s benefit (I.e. for once, “Republican political talking-points” not being considered a “benefit”).

Though I’m sure they had other (non-public) statements to make to the relevant parties: I see McConnell has (temporarily) caved on the debt-limit resolution: just kicking the can down the road a few weeks, but still better than a default.

One thing about the TX abortion vigilante law I’m not getting is the whole “YOU get to sue and YOU get to sue!” aspect of it. I always thought if you brought a lawsuit against someone, regardless of venue, you had to have standing in the case.
