Much simpler: they want their fossil fuel companies to continue to be profitable; it’s all short term bottomline for them. Long term future(where long term is some period exceeding 3 years) of the planet is of no interest to them but their current asset value is as are the donations from these companies.

it’s a long thread, here’s the beginning of it:

ROGD: The term ‘rapid-onset gender dysphoria’ (ROGD) was coined in 2016 to describe an alleged epidemic of youth coming out as trans ‘out of the blue’ due to social contagion and mental illness.

AP:

“…The report released Thursday offers new insight into how the Republican incumbent tried to undo the vote and exert his will on the department, asking leaders to declare the election “corrupt” and disparaging its top official for not doing anything to overturn the results. Trump’s actions led to a near-revolt at department headquarters that receded only after senior officials warned of a mass resignation, with one White House lawyer describing the efforts to undo the election as a “murder-suicide pact.”

“In attempting to enlist DOJ for personal, political purposes in an effort to maintain his hold on the White House, Trump grossly abused the power of the presidency” and arguably violated a federal law that prevents anyone from commanding that federal employees engage in political activity, the report says.”

Keram Christensen was a member of the Covington Human Rights Commission at the time of his arrest in 2019.

An employee of an internet dating website went to police after noticing language in his dating profile that indicated he was soliciting others to provide children for sex, according to the Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney’s office. His profile even ended with the statement that “When I say ‘I want kids, I mean it’!”

Few showed up Thursday morning to a “defend the police” press conference called by Republican Cincinnati City Councilwoman Member Betsy Sundermann.

Those that were there on the steps of Cincinnati City Hall were very vocal.

And not all were there to defend the police.

The event all but turned into a joint press conference between the Sundermann, council candidate Andrew Kennedy, Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Dan Hils and three protesters.

The protesters often interrupted the speakers, including calling Hils a parasite, before Sundermann and Kennedy invited them to speak.

Republicans are announcing their plans to disregard elections they lose.

That is what the endless “forensic audits” are about, they are making it seem somehow normal that voter fraud is an epidemic in this country and that it is to be expected in any state that the GOP loses and even in places that they win (but not enough to tip the outcome, just enough to make it seem “balanced”)

Sorry, but my inner cynic (annoying bastard as he is) tells me that AG Garland can look at this shit until he goes cross eyed, and somehow nothing substantive (other than some sort of formal report that Trump and the whole GQP will simply wipe their asses with) will be done.

I remember reading something along the lines of when Garland was floated as a possible SCOTUS nom, McConnell was all “Obama will never do it, Garland’s too middle of the road.”

Obama then calls McConnell’s bluff, which then results in Mitch taking his ball and going home.

Assuming that exchange is true, it assumes that Mitch was initially okay with Garland being on the SCOTUS. Which means he figured that Garland would pull some of the “I”M A TRUE MODERATE” bullshit that Manchin and Sinema are pulling now. The only reason McConnell refused Garland a hearing was because he was all-in on fucking over Obama any way he could.

Who knows? I don’t personally think Garland has the stomach to prosecute Trump as the lead insurrectionist he is. I think he’s somehow trying to prove that he’s ‘fair and balanced’. Maybe he thinks it would be unseemly to hold a former POTUS responsible for criminal behavior; maybe he’s worried about sparking Civil War Part 2 if he does go after Trump.

I get shit for this, but I think Garland is no different than Muller. Fuck Muller. Muller knew Trump was bad news, but at the end of the day he closed ranks like a good Republican and went all shruggy emoji with “I guess maybe Trump did some shady shit, who can really say?”

Garland’s obviously not a Republican, but that fact that he’s not calling off that bullshit Democratic witch hunt with the special prosecutor from CT means to me he’s more worried about appearing neutral than actually putting criminals away.

Even if that means letting Trump get away with trying to topple the election.

re: #119 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

Now imagine something like this being rolled out in a large city in the USA.

1. Lots of conservatives yelling/proclaiming that this was reality coming to get those who have been demanding a $15/hour minimum wage.

2. An underlying murmur from brick and mortar restaurants about unfair competition, etc. What you currently hear said about food trucks and carts that are a fixture in a lot of cities. If it’s a franchise company like KFC there also might be quite a bit of complaint from local franchise owners who this is directly competing against.

3. The media generally ignores on reporting the underlying costs of supporting the vehicles, the health inspection requirements, the crews and techs that have to be on call for recovering and repairing vehicles that break down. Plus whatever regulations and laws that are now in place regarding autonomous vehicles running around and the licensing for the vending machines (which I presume something like this would be shoehorned into since they are essentially mobile vending machines.) Cult of the New and all that.

4. Presumably there will immediately be issues with a number of the machines being vandalized, destroyed, or otherwise disabled. Or involved in accidents. (My presumption that some of this will be activists not helping their own cause. But the majority will be human wreckers being human wreckers.)

It ends with the project being quietly withdrawn with the media commenting “It was too soon for this.” or them becoming another option as part of the food truck environment. Probably an exotic one due to the expense of running it compared to a regular food truck.

If it was the South China Sea then I doubt whales (of a large size) would be the object. Smaller whale perhaps but the object had to have a mass large enough to cause the sub to rapidly decelerate to cause injuries of the sailors.

The density of living things that swim in the sea is close to that of seawater. Makes sonar detection difficult.

OTOH, if it was an uncharted seamount then that should have had decent returns on the sonar.

Although the Navy did not specify the location of the incident beyond the “Indo-Pacific region,” Sam LaGrone of U.S. Naval Institute News reported that it occurred in the South China Sea.

At best they hit an uncharted sea mount. Don’t buy they hit a submerged container. While it would jolt the boat a bit it wouldn’t cause those injuries. Like running into a whale jolts you pretty good. Worse case is they bounced hulls with another boat. If it’s the first case, it’ll go down as a new navhaz and be properly charted to prevent future collisions. No disciplinary action taken. If it’s the last, well it will be classified and buried. Any disciplinary action like wise classified. Either way there will be an investigation and those I listed will be grilled to hell and back.

I only quickly skimmed the article that was linked, but we do not know the depth of the sub at the time of the incident, correct?

It should be noted that the ocean floors are littered with little seamounts. Active volcanos are quite common, and if the sub was in the South China Sea I wonder if it was near a boundary of the Philippines tectonic plate. There are so many volcanos in the far western Pacific that there will be many that are not accounted.
