Just some good time finger picking on a Saturday night, featuring two of the best.

“Baby’s Coming Home” was originally written by Jerry Reed. This song was recorded and filmed at TuneSmith Studio outside of Nashville, TN in the spring of 2021. It’s on Tommy Emmanuel’s EP Accomplice Series Vol. 2 featuring Richard Smith, and it features both Tommy Emmanuel and Richard Smith on guitar. The video was directed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard for Neighborhoods Apart.

This is an important read.

Dear Dave Chappelle, transgender comedians can take a joke, but why are yours so unfunny?

I wonder how much of this is tied to or is being amplified by Dave’s friendship with Joe Rogan and the reversal of their show-business fortunes over the past twenty years; after all, Rogan was mostly known for hosting Fear Factor when Chappelle was riding high (and getting very rich) on the breakout success of Chappelle’s Show (Rogan even cameoed on Chappelle’s Show with him hosting Fear Factor for a skit). Then, after two seasons, Dave decided he was done with Chappelle’s Show in the middle of season three production (fucking over all of his castmates and crew, including the late Charlie Murphy) and walked away from show business for quite a while, all while Rogan continued to build his name and his brand, getting in with the UFC, then with his podcast.

Now, like him or not, Rogan has parleyed everything he’s worked for into a media empire, while, by and large, Chappelle has been riding on years-ago-earned fame and “legend” status, all the while seemingly incorporating at least some of Rogan’s toxic POV into his own, and that’s a goddamn shame.

Charlie Murphy would beat Dave down if he were still alive for turning into such a fucking lame-ass dudebro punk.

Yeah, when you’re trying to be like Joe Rogan, it’s probably time to go back and examine a lot of life choices. Rogan shouldn’t be allowed to be so rich and revered, but our culture/society/whatever the hell this is doesn’t agree with me. The bad guys keep winning and getting richer and richer. It has to stop somewhere.

You’re also right about Chapelle. I’m not sure what he’s like as a day to day human, or what hurt and/or other issues he deals with. But I think when your “comedy” involves a mean spirit and your own fears or anger, that’s sort of the opposite of comedy, pretty much.

Yep, we need to smarten up or we’ll be stuck with four years of Trump…again.

At the risk of sounding alarmist - I’m really fearful about what that could mean. For instance, elections being suspended indefinitely? Consider that back in 2017, “A poll found that 52% of people who identify as or lean Republican said they would support postponing the 2020 election to ensure that only eligible citizens could vote if it was proposed by President Trump.”

I have no trouble believing that a - God forbid 1000 times - Trump 2.0 would try to find a way of doing that very thing on the claim that our elections have become so corrupted and rife with fraud that no future election can be trusted until “we figure out what the hell is going on,” and therefore, the 2026 midterms and/or the 2028 Presidential Election would be postponed pending an “investigation” into the state of US election integrity.

Said investigation would then be next version of Trump’s health care plan or “Infrastructure Week,” and Trump would remain President until he croaks, to be succeeded by VP Ivanka or VP Junior, or perhaps VP Gym Jordan or Mark Meadows.

I will be delighted to eat crow on this…but…well…C’mon Dems!

Something interpretable
I asked Herman Cain
But he wasn’t able

I tried ivermectin

I tried hydroxy-blahblah

emocrats are edging toward dumping Iowa’s caucuses as first presidential vote:

High-ranking Democrats have tired of its role in selecting a nominee, seeing the state as unrepresentative of the party and the country.

Not just the state but the caucus itself: it is a highly restrictive voting process in which you have to travel to the Caucus site and remain there to vote in person. Only a handful of people have the time for such a thing.

It’s his schtick: the GOP will always win because the Dems didn’t fondle the sainted White Working Class with enough vigor. And if you assume that Trump was going to win in 2016, the Blue Wall falling was the highest probability way that it was going to happen.

Good point. Start flying and you are under the watchful eye of the federal government literally every second you’re doing it. Yet people who think masks and a jab are tyranny will consider doing it. Come to think of it, if your plane is not pressurized you will have to wear a mask if you go above 14,000 feet (ie not especially high). Defying that rule will get you stone dead in minutes.

Hypoxic pilot refuses to wear a mask

C-17 copilot and staunch conspiracy theorist Air Force 1st Lt. Kyle Korrigan received harsh criticism and a nap yesterday after refusing to wear a mask, according to sources. An unexpected depressurization at 37,000 feet knocked the pilot out, leaving the copilot claiming that supplemental oxygen is part of a “liberal agenda.”

The Air Force is looking into the incident, but investigators believe the cause of the depressurization was the failure of a pressure-release valve. The rest of the crew was reported in good condition after they followed basic, common-sense instructions designed to keep them safe, such as “Put on a mask” and “Don’t take the mask off while the plane is depressurized.”

“It’s a pretty simple emergency procedure,” said Tech Sgt. Angus Smith, the loadmaster on the flight. “There’s a lot of stupid rules we have to follow in the military.

“But you can die from hypoxia.”

You wouldn’t think that would create a multi millionaire but it did. One of the first things he did was get his license and buy a plane. He just got done spending 10K on repairs and a replacement of a seat in the passenger area. Then you have to rent a hangar at the airport, pay their fees etc. If this fool thinks a plane is cheap, maybe he should buy a boat too, since he’s saving sooo much money.

It’s satire

Yep!
GOP Lawmaker Cites Military Satire Site ‘Duffel Blog’ at Extremism Hearing

During a hearing on extremism in the military’s ranks, a Republican congressman blasted a witness on the credibility of the Southern Poverty Law Center, saying the group has designated major veteran organizations unfairly as hate groups.

But that never happened.

Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, grilled Lecia Brooks, the chief of staff for the Southern Poverty Law Center, over perceived bias against traditionally conservative organizations and veteran groups. Brooks was testifying at a House Armed Services Committee hearing on White supremacy and right-wing extremism in the military and veteran community following the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol shortly after a pro-Trump rally.

Seventeen bazillion years ago, I had a neighbor who would ALWAYS call the police if she could hear anything at all going on at someone else’s house. Afternoon cookout? Cops. Mid-morning lawnmower? Cops. Mid-afternoon kids’ birthday party? Cops. Dogs barking at any time? Cops. This one person pretty much held the entire neighborhood hostage, and the dumbass cops never wised up to her game.

It’s not just expensive — small planes are dangerous. Commercial jets from first world nations piloted by professionals and inspected by mechanics are a safe way to travel; smaller planes not so much. Any kind of adverse weather can lead to disaster, as can problems undetected because a professional did not check the plane out.

Depending on whether this storm system moves north or south of us will determine if we have the first snowfall of the season here early this week.

Could first snow of the season be coming? (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

The WyoBraska area has seen fairer than average temperatures for the fall season so far, but that could all change in a few days as a storm system begins to move into the region early next week.

Michael Natoli, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, said it will be hard to tell what the storm will actually mean for the area until toward the end of the weekend.

“There’s still quite a bit of uncertainty that remains with this system,” he said. “So what’s the tricky thing here is the exact track of the storm center is going to be pretty close to our area, and if it goes just to our north, that means a very different thing than if it goes just to our south.”

Natoli said that if the system goes slightly north, there is a higher chance the Panhandle and eastern Wyoming will experience much colder weather and even snow. However, if it goes slightly south, the temperatures will be a little warmer and precipitation, if any, will more likely be rain.

It was OK for him, a white boy, to go to Boley, but the Black kids were warned away from Paden. Of course, he attended a segregated school in Paden. (I have a picture of his senior class. All white.) Ironically, the poor whites in Paden and poor Blacks in Boley had much more in common than the people who lived in Tulsa, but the racism….grrrr. That was 80-90 years ago now.

re: #102 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

So…we went to the curling class last night.

We went to the Ardsley Curling Club up in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The club has been there since 1932! Although when we walked up to the entrance it looked like we were walking into a tool shed.

But once we got inside, the place was actually pretty damn big! (The three folks in his photo were our instructors).

We were shown the basics and then paired off into 4 teams to play a short game.

I was surprised at the level of exertion it takes to play this game. The act of ‘throwing’ the stones - each between 40 and 44 pounds of granite, on ice - was a crazy combination of coordination and balance. You had to plant your launching foot on a ‘hack’ (a plate that’s fastened down to the ice, kind of like a starter’s plate in track) while wearing a shoe with a silicon ‘slider’ on your ‘sliding’ foot. You then had to crouch down, raise your butt, then draw back your sliding foot and the stone and launch forward - while also setting the handle of the stone at either 10:00 or 2:00 and slowly twisting it to center, which is how you apply the ‘curl’ which determines the direction the stone is going to travel.

I sucked at it, but started to get it as the night went on. I even scored a point in the game, which was cool.

The other part of the play is the ‘sweeping’ or ‘brushing’. The old brooms have been replaced by nylon pads, kind of like a big lint brush. And it is hard work! you have to keep the brush at a 45 degree angle from the path of the stone and stay in front of the stone and not bump into the other sweeper or touch the stone in any way, which removes the stone from play.

The one team member who is exempt from the sweeping is the one called the ‘skip,’ or team captain. The skip stands at the opposite end and points out where he wants the stone to go - either as a ‘draw’ (a throw intended to score points by ending up inside the blue circle (1 point) or the red circle (2 points), a ‘guard’ (landing where it will ‘guard’ a stone that has scored a point) or a ‘take-out’ (which will knock a stone of the opposing team out of the circles to take away a point). And the skip gets to tell the sweepers when to sweep, and due to the length of the rink it ends up being a lot of yelling.

Due to my status as an old man and averse to sweeping, I was the skip of our team. :)

After the instructions, we played a short game of three ‘ends’ (similar to an inning in baseball). Our opponents scored a point in the first end, and we countered with 2 points in the second. At that point the instructor gave us the choice to either stop or play another end, and we were having such a good time we played a third end - and our opponents scored 3 points in that end and won the game. We should have literally quit while we were ahead. :)

(A regulation game goes for 8 ends, so we just played a very short version.)

The class was a lot of fun, and I remain pretty fascinated by it. Our instructor told me that there’s a curling club here on LI, but they don’t have an indoor facility of their own and have to rent ice. I might check it out and see what the situation is.

Here’s a bonus shot of myself and the lovely wife post-game.

It is! The first couple of tries to throw had me huffing and puffing like I was still smoking. :)

Another cool aspect of the sport is the emphasis on etiquette - each team greats the other with a hand shake (or fist bump in Covid times) and a wish of ‘good curling’ and repeats it at the end of the game. Trash talk and showboating are expressly forbidden. And when it’s over, the tradition is for the winning team to buy the losing team the first round of drinks, and then the losing team buys the second round.

Truly a gentle sport. During the game I found myself actually encouraging folks on the other team. Where else in the world does that happen?

Interesting work development: my badge wouldn’t let me in this morning at work.

My defense contractor company sent out an email last week indicating that the company will require everyone to be vaccinated by December 18th. As I mentioned Friday, that led to a few people protesting before work started on Friday. If you didn’t see the article about it, it’s here:

heraldbanner.com

In addition, they told those of us who are vaccinated that we needed to upload copies of our vaccine card by the 15th of this month (why they have an earlier date for the cards I don’t know).

I was vaccinated back in April, and told the company, but back then there was no scan requirement. Yesterday, my wife found the card and scanned it, and I had planned on uploading the images to the document server today before I started other work to get done.. But when I went to the door at work, my badge wouldn’t let me in. I tried a couple of times on different doors and got the same thing.

I finally went down to the security center, and they told me that someone in HR put a block on me and others because of the virus. I will need to go in on Monday and talk to HR. What’s also interesting is that I am still able to remote in, and I know that some of the security setup at work should have prevented me from logging in if I were on a full lockout.

I am kind of wondering if the HR person has chosen to do this because of the mandate. I also wonder if some HR person will be out of a job soon.

My boss (a ridiculously tall lady covered in tattoos) plays the bagpipes. I used to think the harmonica was the most obnoxious instrument ever invented, but I now realize it’s the bagpipes.

I’m so glad you had a great time. I don’t think I’m physically able or I would be doing it. There’s a golf and curling club a few minutes from my house. Thanks for the report. I’m so envious.

The similarity between harmonica and bagpipes is the reed(s). When I was young I had a practice pipe (one reed, no bag or drones). I used to play it in the house and the dogs and cats would go nuts. They hated it. I think the oscillation of the reeds really hurt their sensitive ears.

I just talked to my brother, who is in Houston for my nephew’s wedding reception, which was yesterday. He drove there, which I thought was nuts, but he pointed out the rental car companies don’t have that many vehicles after selling off so many during COVID, and now this Southwest alleged sickout. So he looks pretty smart compared to his sister (me) who would have seriously considered hopping on a plane.

CURLING STONES | How It’s Made

At about 1:20 in the video, you can see that they grind the bottom so that only a small part of the stone actually rides on the ice. Pretty cool.

So Allen West is going to primary Greg Abbott.

Abbott can pass wingnut laws, but I don’t think he can pull off wingnut like West can. The good LTC is in Trump/Palin/Gosar/Boebert/MTG territory on that score. He’ll be a tough nut to crack.*

Allen and his wife just had a fetal stem cell injection and now feel much better. They have chosen to support Big Pharma with this expensive treatment but are they also aware that monoclonal antibody infusion therapy requires a microchip to be injected into them for it to work?
[I’m afraid to tweet the above because yesterday Twitter gave me a 12 hour sanction because I responded to someone who said he ain’t going to get “no chip” by telling him to “drink some bleach instead”]

I think the real reason Repugs favor the infusion treatment is that they believe it is harder for poor people to access.

I was going to reply to West about how grateful I am that he believes I can defend myself and family from those who might get us sick, and to ask what the appropriate weapon to use is, but he has replies restricted.

re: #118 jaunte

I suppose he could, but the problem goes all the way down.

Yep. Right down to the assholes at the actual border entries who can refuse entry for any fucking reason they want. Because they can. And there is no real process to appeal that decision.

I think the real reason Repugs favor the infusion treatment is that they believe it is harder for poor people to access.

The reason right wing assholes like West favor late and ultimately very expensive treatments rather than prevention is a basic ideological difference in that right wing assholes favor Free-dumb to do anything they want and only pay the piper (richly) after the calamity ensues.

The rational mindset is to prevent the pandemic problem in the first place via vaccine, which entails an automatic trust in “liberal” science and social planning. These concepts are automatically rejected from consideration in the cognitive process of right wing assholes like Allen West.

Meanwhile, CSPAN is getting dragged big time for airing Trump’s hate rally in Iowa yesterday.
