I’m so sorry for the husband that now has to go on, knowing that his wife died due to a single bad decision that came from bad information. I’m thinking about what it would be like if Mrs. Fish listened to her family and had decided not to get vaccinated, and died as a result. I’d be suicidal, to be perfectly blunt.

West Virginia is a mess; it appears as #1 on list ranked by rate of current deaths. Worldometer shows its surge in both cases and deaths is now at its highest rate during the pandemic. Gov. Justice did seem to be very dedicated in combatting the virus in his state — why have they fallen so far behind? Is it just that many of the residents have problems getting access to the vaccine? Or that too many are brainwashed by anti-vaxxers?

Justice is the wealthiest man in the state (and its only billionaire). Too bad he hasn’t figured out the magic trick to help his state combat the disease.

Our billionaire governor (only the 9th richest billionaire in the state) is handling this better — or maybe it just reflects the fact that Illinois is a blue state. OTOH, Anymouse’s Nebraska seems to be doing well and it is a red state run by the very red millionaire Ricketts.

And I mean, no offense, but I’m autistic. If Mrs. Fish passed on unexpectedly, I wouldn’t be long for this world, because she serves as an anchor to keep me from going crazy due to unexpected social anxiety or whatnot. And if these two were genuinely mentally challenged, well… I fear I may see where this is leading. And that’s truly tragic.

Some stats about kids coming out to classmates that should hopefully help you keep fighting for our children:

The survey included more than 800 LGBTQ+ high school and college athletes located in the United States and Canada. These participants all came “out” to at least one teammate and answered questions about their experience doing so. As an important caveat, just 29 responses came from athletes who came out to their teammates as trans.

With that said, more than 95% of responses described their teammates’ reaction to their news as anywhere from “neutral” to “perfect,” with less than 5% saying it was “bad.” Specifically, just under one-quarter of respondents said the response from their teammate was “perfect or near perfect.” More than half said the reaction fell between “neutral” and “very good.” Three respondents categorized reactions as the “worst-case scenario.”

Interestingly, just under one-third of respondents said their teammates were more welcoming than the general student body. About one-third of survey participants said the response they got from teammates was about “the same” as they expected to get, but more than 60% said the response was better than expected. Less than 5% said it was worse than they anticipated.

One high school athlete in North Dakota told researchers that being outed as bisexual was a serious fear of hers. When she told a handful of teammates, though, “the support was amazing,” and several others on the team also came out as LGBTQ+.

Notably, more than 80% of college athletes rated their teammates’ reactions as “good,” whereas just over 70% of high schoolers said the same. Just 3% of college students said their teammates’ reactions were “bad,” while 7% of high schoolers said the same.

A college football player replied to the survey saying the “first time” they came out as gay to anyone, it was actually to all 130 members of their high school football team. “Many teammates were sharing very personal struggles that they’ve had in their life,” he explained. “And I felt like that was the time to come out. I never planned on coming out like that. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. So glad I did it.”

So, while the adults are coming up with all sorts of rules to make things tougher on kids, their peers aren’t acting like their parents.

An update on my not being able to get into work (#156 if you haven’t read it). Got a text this evening from work, and someone in my group has tested positive. They’re keeping all of us who were supposedly less than 6 feet away for more than 15 minutes at home. While we have a daily 15 minute standup meeting, we’re software engineers: we automatically spread out to maximize the distance between us in any room. So I have to wait until Tuesday to get a test before I can find out when I can return to the office. We all wear our masks, and there’s only one person in the group that I’m unsure of their vaccination status.

We Finally Know How 43 Students on a Bus Vanished Into Thin Air (The Daily Beast)

I’m going to have to see what Anabel Hernández has to say about that. She wrote the most detailed (painfully detailed) book on what happened to those students called “La Verdadera Noche de Iguala” a few years ago. Last I heard, she was living in exile in Europe because she can’t count on the Mexican police at any level for protection. (Not just for her work on the students, but also because she wrote books about cartelistas.) Ok…and while my Spanish is not super, it looks like she’s calling the Mexican Army the link between the Ayotzinapa (Iguala) case and other, similar, cases.

So yeah, this sounds like a thing—the Army and drug dealers working together to get rid of 43 students who hijacked the buses loaded with drugs. I am just going to say that it’s depressing as hell to read drug news from Mexico because the corruption is so rampant, sometimes I wonder if Mexico isn’t really a failed state. But I cannot say because I don’t live there and I’m not an expert.

My electric guitar is due for a restringing. For funsies I think I’m going to put 10s on this time. I can always change them back to 8s if I don’t like it.

It’s a great job. I consider myself lucky to have been able to get that job.
They have a great retirement and you can retire early if you want, I punched out at 50 in 2013 with 26 years of service.

re: #84 A Mom Anon

I’ve mentioned this before… but my corner of western NY fits all your needs except the winter part. The NY State of Health coverage plans are very good, there’s top-notch hospitals and doctors in Rochester and Buffalo, and you can own quite inexpensively once you’re 30 miles or so out of either city.

The overall vibe of life here is much more Ohio than NY City, but then I can be in Ohio in just over 3 hours and it’s twice that to NYC. (Which is too bad for me because I loooove NYC!)

Happy to provide more details if you’re interested.

Thanks! That area is on my list. My main concern is figuring out if any bank will even finance a mortgage for us right now. We have really good credit scores(low 800s for me, high 700s for hubby), which is helpful, but I have no idea how that will fly with a bank. This is a long process.
