The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday probed arguments about whether Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron can defend a law restricting abortion that went into effect and was struck down in court before he became the state’s top law enforcement officer.

The case amounts to a technical debate over Cameron’s jurisdiction and whether he’ll have a shot in court to resurrect a law that would ban a specific surgical procedure used to end pregnancies.

The common second trimester procedure, known as “dilation and evacuation,” was banned by the Kentucky legislature in 2018. Courts then swiftly found the restriction contained in HB 454 unconstitutional.

Justices are not considering the substance of the anti-abortion law itself, but rather Cameron’s role in challenging its dismissal. It is the first abortion-related case being considered under the 6-3 conservative Supreme Court supermajority.

“When laws like this are challenged in court, they must be defended,” said Cameron. “My team was honored to argue before our nation’s highest court for the ability to continue defending this important law and to ensure that a state’s chosen representative can always defend its pro-life laws.”

Scream | Official Trailer (2022 Movie)

You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if this installment dunks on reboots/reimaginings/remakes, much like the original 1996 film was a commentary on the-then played out slasher genre (and when Scream was released, yeah, slasher films had been enjoying a 20-year-long run, starting more-or-less with 1974’s Black Christmas and by 1996, a lot of those flicks were going straight-to-video).

There was speculation that the GOP might try to crack Jefferson County to eliminate Kentucky’s last democratic stronghold during redistricting. However, that could run afoul of state law against splitting counties more than necessary, and the GOP Congressmen aren’t enthusiastic about losing a lot of their current constituents in order to take on a bunch of Louisville voters. So we’ll see what happens when the legislature reconvenes next year, or sooner if Beshear calls a special session for redistricting. Kentucky didn’t lose or gain any congressional seats.

White high school students in Chicago kneeled to protest a Spanish-language song at their homecoming dance on Saturday, and allegedly made racist comments about Mexican students.

Elizabeth Pacheco, 16, posted video of the incident on Instagram that had been viewed more than 197,000 times by Tuesday afternoon.

patch.com reports that students at Marist High School, a Roman Catholic school, kneeled in protest when the DJ played the Spanish-language version of Billy Ray Cyrus’ hit “Achy Breaky Heart.”

“People immediately started booing and kneeling, and everyone knows from the national anthem that kneeling means protesting — they were against the song,” Pacheco told Patch, adding that the protesting students also disrupted others who continued dancing. “They started saying really disrespectful things about Mexicans and that’s when I started to record.”

Pacheco also said no staff members intervened to stop the students from protesting or making racist remarks.

A reminder that assuming the next generations will be less racist is a fool’s errand, when the previous generations are still successfully raising them to be just as hateful as they were.

Homecoming is also closely associated with church congregations, especially with smaller rural churches in the south. It’s been a thing since colonial times, often marking the founding date of the church. Nowadays, it’s usually around Memorial Day weekend and involves a lot of preaching, singing and food.

If you had Crenshaw on your Cancel Culture Bingo Card you just scored!

The Texas Republican said Brave Books approached him about the project, titled”Fame, Blame, and the Raft of Shame,” which is the fourth in a series by conservative authors to counter social justice lessons children might learn in schools, reported Fox News.

“You’ve got reach all audiences,” Crenshaw told the network. “Parents are increasingly frustrated by their school’s curriculum. They can go find left-wing progressive and woke children’s books out there. It’s pretty hard to find exclusively conservative-themed children’s products.”

Brave Books offers one book per month for an annual subscription, and previous authors have included Elizabeth Johnson, Jack Posobiec and Ashley St. Clair.

A daily aspirin regimen should not be started for most adults to prevent a first heart attack or stroke because the risk of bleeding cancels out the potential benefits, according to The US Preventive Services Task Force’s draft recommendation statement released on Tuesday. The change from its 2016 recommendation only applies to people who have no history of cardiovascular disease and are not already taking aspirin for a previous heart attack or stroke.

Texas traitors might also have to deal with the Mexican army and drug cartels ranging freely across the border, especially if there are mass killings of Mexican nationals (as seems likely). Part of the BP would go over to the secesh, but probably only the ones dumb enough to think the Abbott gang would, or could, pick up their retirement obligations. The Mexican army has actual tanks and tracked APCs; ancient, pipsqueak types to be sure; but still far beyond what goober ammosexuals could handle. My friend Marsh, a retired police officer and Vietnam veteran, advises them to aim their shotgun slugs at the track pins. “It won’t do any good, but it would give them something to do before they become track grease.”

The Orange County school board unanimously passed a resolution Monday opposing “incidents of hostile and racist behavior” as protesters voiced their objections outside the meeting, including members of white nationalist groups.

Extra security was present at Monday’s Orange County school board meeting at AL Stanback Middle School amid reports that the Proud Boys were protesting the district’s COVID-19 and LGBTQ policies. The group has held other protests at district events, and several members of the group spoke at and attended the school board meeting Monday.

The newly adopted resolution says the board “stands united against all forms of white nationalism and white supremacy” and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mark Burns (wingnut pastor from South Carolina) has announced he’s running for Congress.

What he nor the GOP will tell you is he claimed to have a Bachelor of Science degree from North Greenville University. They said he only attended for one semester.

He also claimed to have been in the Army Reserve. That is also not true.

When confronted by CNN about it, he claimed his Website was hacked. Wix, the site host, said there was no evidence of a hack. He then accused CNN of being “politically correct” and walked out of the interview.

Pro Publica, today:

Trump Won the County in a Landslide. His Supporters Still Hounded the Elections Administrator Until She Resigned.

An elections administrator in North Texas submitted her resignation Friday, following a monthslong effort by residents and officials loyal to former President Donald Trump to force her out of office.

Michele Carew, who had overseen scores of elections during her 14-year career, had found herself transformed into the public face of an electoral system that many in the heavily Republican Hood County had come to mistrust, which ProPublica and The Texas Tribune covered earlier this month.

Her critics sought to abolish her position and give her duties to an elected county clerk who has used social media to promote baseless allegations of widespread election fraud.

Carew, who was hired to run elections in Hood County two-and-a-half months before the contested presidential race, said in an interview that she worried that the forces that tried to drive her out will spread to other counties in the state.

They really are poisoning the well. For example, it would be most unreasonable to blindly trust vote counts coming from a swing state if the state legislature is GOP and has appointed a party hack to “oversee” the election.

The media will then both-sides this to say that nobody trusts election results that go against their side.

The Shadow Penal System for Struggling Kids (The New Yorker, October 11, 2021)

The Christian organization Teen Challenge, made up of more than a thousand centers, claims to reform troubled teens. But is its discipline more like abuse?

Before Emma arrived, fifteen and pregnant, her parents signed a contract giving the program unconditional control of her.

In the spring of her freshman year of high school, in 2011, Emma Burris was woken at three in the morning. Someone had turned on the lights in her room. She was facing the wall and saw a man’s shadow. She reached for her cell phone, which she kept under her pillow at night, but it wasn’t there. The man, Shane Thompson, who is six and a half feet tall, wore a shirt with “Juvenile Transport Agent” printed on the back. He and a colleague instructed Emma to put on her clothes and follow them to their car. “She was very verbal, resisting,” Thompson told me. Her parents, who had adopted her when she was seven, stood by the doorway, watching silently.

Thompson drove Emma away from her house, in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, and merged onto the highway. Emma, who was fifteen, tried to remember every exit sign she passed, so that she could find her way home, but she was crying too hard to remember the names. In his notes, Thompson wrote, “Emma voiced that she was confused as to why her mom was sending her away.” She was on the track, volleyball, and soccer teams, and she didn’t want to miss any games.

Part Scottish and part Puerto Rican, Emma was slight, with long, wavy blond hair. Her parents, whose lives revolved around their church, admonished her for being aggressive toward them and for expressing her sexuality too freely. She watched lesbian pornography and had lost her virginity to an older boy. She often read romance novels late at night, when she was supposed to be asleep. To avoid attracting her parents’ attention, she used the light from the street to work on a novel that told a story similar to her own life: a young girl spends her early years in foster care, where she is abused, until a Christian family saves her. To keep the ending upbeat, she found herself straying from the facts of her life. Emma worried that her parents, who had three biological children, considered her a burden. “There was always a sense of exile,” Emma said. Her mother sometimes told her, “If I have to love you from a distance, I will.”

Teen Challenge has received tens of millions of dollars in federal and state grants (there’s that separation of church and state being attacked again). It is affiliated with the Pentecostal Assemblies of God, and George W. Bush has praised the programme as “one of the really successful programmes in America.”

Homecoming is also closely associated with church congregations, especially with smaller rural churches in the south. It’s been a thing since colonial times, often marking the founding date of the church. Nowadays, it’s usually around Memorial Day weekend and involves a lot of preaching, singing and food.

German villages all have their Kirmes, or Kerb, the Church Fair, celebrating the date that their church was officially consecrated. It involves a weekend of celebrations, music, dancing, food, drink, often amusements and fair stands.

Our family tradition is to go down to the air rifle booth and shoot targets for prizes.

Why “religion” should never be an exemption to a mask mandate.

Local mom gets ordained, signs more than hundred mask exemption forms (Dayton, OH Daily News, October 8, 2021)

She got credentials through Universal Life Church (the on-line clergy mill).

Local public health officials recommend masks in school, both to avoid transmission of COVID-19 and to limit the number of students who have to quarantine when there is a COVID case. The CDC says “multi-layer cloth masks block release of exhaled respiratory particles into the environment, along with the microorganisms (viruses) these particles carry.”

But Valley View offered families pathways to medical or religious mask exemptions. On the religious side, their form required a “religious official” to submit a signed statement that “an established religious requirement exists” preventing a particular student from wearing a mask.

Grant offered to sign the forms for anyone in the community, and eventually signed for over 150 students in Valley View, as well as students in Miamisburg, Springboro and other districts.

Universal Life Church itself noted that they do not exempt people from masks for religious reasons.

It has two rules: Only do what is right, and actions cannot impinge on the rights of others. She broke both of those.

The Valley View School District accepted over one hundred “exemptions” from her, which caused a massive surge in paediatric Covid-19 cases in their district. The other districts rejected the exemptions she signed, as they appeared to be boilerplate text to them.

If you feel that you MUST REPLY (hint: you don’t) take a screenshot. These people won’t take your advice and if they have a blue check their troll swarms will mass report you.

I do not see Twitter timeouts as a bad thing. It’s like a vacation. A total ban could be like a relaxing retirement.

That’s on the school district, and they should be held responsible for any deaths or injuries. Reasonable people would have shut that down by the 10th exemption from the same crackpot.

Nope. Religion trumps sense. That’s why there are religious exemptions for medical care in many states in the first place.

You can allow your children (or other children) to die and it is not against the law in many states.

Only when there’s a problem at the school district. Other schools managed to reject the crank exemptions.

Now all the parents need to do is find a crank lawyer to represent them in a class-action suit claiming the schools denied their constitutional rights of freedom of religion.

Courts cannot decide what is a religious tenet and what is not; that also violates the I Amendment.

Wyoming Republican primarying Liz Cheney:

He’s perfect for the Republican Party.

US House candidate Bouchard says he impregnated 14-year-old when he was 18 (Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune, June 26, 2021)

Bouchard told the Star-Tribune he married the girl when she was 15 and he was 19. At the time, they were both living in Florida.

The two were legally able to get married at the time because Florida law stated that people could marry at any age with a judge’s approval if a pregnancy was involved and a parent consented, according to the lawmaker.

He admitted that on a Facebook Live chat with supporters, because he said opponents were trying to smear his good name.

He divorced her three years later (when she was eighteen). She subsequently killed herself. He blamed that on her father’s problems in the past.

She was buried in Georgia in 1990.

He raised their son, from whom he is now also estranged. He says his son made “poor life choices” (at the time, he was arrested in 2018 on multiple sexual assault charges).

There are several other Republican challengers for the Republican primary, but none condemned him over the issue.

Why “religion” should never be an exemption to a mask mandate.

Local mom gets ordained, signs more than hundred mask exemption forms (Dayton, OH Daily News, October 8, 2021)

She got credentials through Universal Life Church (the on-line clergy mill).

Full disclosure: I am ordained with ULC, but let me explain why.

A friend of mine from Canada decided, like I did, to move to the U.S. after meeting a guy down here and getting engaged. She is Pentecostal, he is Mennonite. The wedding was going to be held in the grooms Mennonite community. However, they could not find any officiants willing to marry them unless the bride converted to be a Mennonite.

Now I know you might ask: “Why not just do it at a courthouse and sort out the rest later?”

Well, the groom was worried his Mennonite friends and family would throw a shit fit if he and his bride eschewed the traditional church wedding. The bride, being religious herself, also wanted a traditional ceremony and she was getting to the point of being extremely stressed out that she couldn’t find anyone to marry them.

So eventually I said “fuck this mess”, got myself ordained and officiated my friends wedding myself. I have no regrets about doing so.

My wife is also ordained with ULC. She did that when Obergefell was decided by the Supreme Court.

No church in this area will perform a wedding for same-sex couples because they are all inclusive. The county court doesn’t do civil marriages (it never has).

Thus she obtained her credentials to provide a way for people around here to get married if they wanted to do so. She posited a question to the county prosecutor if it would be legal, he punted to the state attorney general, and he came back and said “yup.”

I keep trying to explain to them that it’s not white people we’re targeting since, after all, I am white. It’s just the dumbest third of white people because, let’s face it: If you’re white and still dumber than a box of rocks after a thousand years of dominance and privilege, it’s probably time for your bloodline to fade into the mists of history.

Many aren’t dumb — they are vicious racists. Let’s not assume that those who are evil and cruel are stupid; they can be quite clever at manipulating others and many are unprincipled liars. They may be gullible in believing the lies they regurgitate but that’s because they want the lies to be true and they will work at changing the rules so that their lies are reality — you know “Alternative facts”.

My daughter and son-in-law were married by a friend of ours who was ordained with ULC way, way back in his hippie days. (edit: the ordination was back then, the marriage was a decade ago.) The marriage seems to be going well. I’m not entirely clear about the certification of the person who performed the ceremony for son and daughter-in-law. It was a Zoom wedding, anyway, but it is recognized by the state of California so who cares. They had hoped to have a nice first anniversary party/wedding reception come December, but it doesn’t look like that is going to fly thanks to Covid.

E Harmony (women)

Doesn’t Iran believe in transgendered people, just not gay people?

Some Muslims read the modern trans-identity as equivalent to the pre-existing culture-bounded identifier present in Arabia that are mentioned in the hadith.

Others use the same term to also encompass gay men and gender-nonconforming people, but the important part is that mukhannathun is a social identity—how others identify you—not a personal identity…so application of the label cuts both ways. Once assigned that status, you’ve been allocated to a group with some rights and not others.

So Iran’s position is a weird mixed bag where it’s generous compared to other more conservative fatwa, but it’s still about the dudes in charge deciding your identity but also not making a space for you in society.
