It’s not even a Clark Kent Superman variant, it’s a comic line where Clark and Lois have a son that’s Superman.

But the people getting mad have no incentive to actually pay attention, because the end goal is to keep escalating what they are entitled to do to others because they’re angry and feel attacked.

I had a Smart car for about six years. 2008 we got it - had reserved one as a lark about a year before they came to the US. Showed up right after someone rammed my wife’s car and she was driving a rental Prius for three weeks. So we bought it, and got some good use out of it. Super fun to drive to San Francisco because I could find parking almost anywhere by parking nose-in.

T-Mobile is probably the best deal around if you need multiple lines and bells and whistles. I pay 140/month for 4 lines. This includes unlimited 5g internet, unlimited international data at 256k/s, unlimited in flight internet with gogo on air, discounts for 4k Netflix or free basic Netflix, free year or Apple TV plus, etc. Probably forgetting a few things.

The people who will get the maddest at this will be people who don’t read the comics and don’t care to. We’ve all now encountered the idea of inventing a guy to be mad at, but the next level is that you invent a fictional version of a real person, and use the misdeeds of the fictional version to justify the things you inflict on the real person.

Their axiom is that their preferences are True, so it doesn’t matter if they don’t know anything about Superman canon, their rustled jimmies are simply too important to be appeased by shit like “actually reading the source material.”

The anger and cruelty are real: they will get expressed at somebody…so the point of these kinds of exercises is to create pretexts, The specifics of the outrage never matter because they’re simply a pretense to do what they want to do…which is feel contempt for and superiority over other people.

I’ve been on Google Fi for several years now. Love it - they use T-Mobile’s signal. I pay about $60 a month for everything…they have multiphone plans. Defaults to wifi whenever there’s a signal around to reduce data usage, and they have a max charge on data per month if you go over your plan.

Traveling with it is great too. Spent two weeks in Mexico and had $9 in total charges - even using Mexico’s services (again, because it hops on any wifi unless passwords are required).

According to the MAGAts, the denials are all lies, that there totally was a massive “sick-out” that not a single participant chose to go public about, but all of them “know” somebody who swears it happened and it’s all over mandates.

Covid related comments.

Personal: Was meeting a friend for breakfast and had told her that I only eat outdoors. She texted from the restaurant since it was damp and cold, she was sitting inside and hoped I’d reconsider. Nope — hard and fast rule for me. We moved to the outside tent where we were the only customers (the others all sitting warm and dry inside), but eventually additional outdoor patrons showed up so we weren’t alone. So — hopefully neither of us gets ill but at least it won’t be covid.

Worldometer: For the past couple weeks I had been commenting on how Florida had slowly ascended the death ranks from lower than Illinois, then to 10, and finally to 9.
This week their rank had dropped to 10 again. I didn’t think their current situation had improved significantly — but then discovered that the issue was Arkansas — it appears that there was a huge backlog of death certifications; so the change for Florida was due solely to catastrophic recent reporting on Arkansas. Hopefully, for them, the Arkansas situation was temporary.

The whole point of hyping the phantom “sick-out” is because all the confident predictions in previous months that imposing vaccine mandates would lead to businesses crumbling as “tens/hundreds of thousands quit in protest” has yet to materialize. There has yet to be a single business who has seen non-compliance so large that they have had to abandon mandates. If anything, so far the rule appears to be consistent: Where the pay and morale are high, employees get over their “hesitancy” and get the jab rather than taking their chances in finding another job.

I used Google Fi about 5 years ago for a while. At the time the internet wasn’t unlimited, it was $10/GB, which can add up quickly when tethering my laptop for remote work. The phone selection at the time was also quite limited. It was great given those constraints, and I’d possibly give it another shot if they implemented unlimited internet for a flat rate.

Viaero (a five-state company in our area) has the best coverage in Nebraska. They are even busy trying to upgrade to 4G (and even 5G in Colorado).

The white hole between Scottsbluff and North Platte is where we live. We have a Viaero tower in town, but it only covers US-26 (it is a directional antenna; they don’t want the town’s business).

SRSLY?

And WTF does Jacksonville (where I don’t believe Southwest Airlines is headquartered) have to do with anything?

It’s the MAGAts trying desperately to keep a conspiracy theory alive despite the growing evidence that there’s nothing to the whole mess.

The whole thing started over the weekend when a bunch of SWA flights got canceled due to unrelated factors (inclement weather in one region, normal call-outs, and scheduling mix-ups) caused the airline’s new personal management system went tits-up. The very same airline had received a fair bit of stick for this back in June when the same confluence of events caused similar delays/cancellations, but apparently this got lost in the chorus of gnashing teeth and primal screams.

As always happens with the rumor mill, somebody remembered that the SWA pilots union had filed a court challenge to the airline’s vaccine mandate on Friday afternoon, decided that the whole weekend mess couldn’t simply be a coincidence, and decided that this was evidence of an unannounced and unsanctioned “sick-out.” Others quickly decided that since FL was experiencing the bulk of the cancellations, this must mean that the ATCs had likewise conducted a “sick-out,” no doubt in solidarity with the phantom one being staged by SWA employees.

In the days since the rumors started, the airline, the union, and regulatory boards have all stated that there was no “sick-out,” that this was a company being too clever by half, and any reports of such were false. Since no SWA pilots or employees have confirmed this “sick-out,” Rafael and the rest of the MAGAts have been forced to claim that the ATCs were the ones who actually revolted.

Yeah, when I found out that Chris Pratt was attending an Evangelical megachurch, I was like, “ah, nope.”

Spoilers: There was a time where yours truly attended an Evangelical megachurch. “And now, the rest of the story.” I was talked into it by my then-soon-to-be-father-in-law, as a condition of being allowed to continue to see his daughter. While the preaching was excellent (if a bit heavy on the financial/prosperity gospel bullshit), the rest of the church experience was … severely un-Christlike. Shortly after we got married, we stopped going to that church altogether, and when we moved into our house a couple of years later, my father-in-law recommended the church I attend now, which is a bit more reality-based as far as churches go. So, why didn’t we start here, I ponder…

When the school learned I was coming home every day from 1st grade and reading the afternoon newspaper, the vice principal, Miss Clover, instantly wanted to move me to 3rd grade. My mother was dead-set against the idea. “She’s already the smallest kid in 1st grade, she’d be dwarfed by 3rd graders.” Plus I was already having problems with social cues. I think my mom was hoping that by staying in 1st grade, I’d get it together. Uhm, nope. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell on Tuesday unexpectedly turned on the Cyber Ninjas audit that failed to prove former President Donald Trump won the state of Arizona.

Even though Lindell at one point believed the audit would pave the way for Trump’s “reinstatement” as president, he told Steve Bannon this week that the Arizona audit was seemingly part of an elaborate ruse.

Specifically, Lindell faulted Cyber Ninjas for writing a report of their findings without first obtaining routers used by Maricopa County during the 2020 election.

“We got to quit having them do fraudits — that’s fraudulent audits!’ Lindell fumed. “This is part of the coverup! Then the media goes, ‘Yep, look at that, Arizona, Biden won.’ No he didn’t! Donald Trump won Arizona by a quarter of a million votes! That’s fact!”

It was not fact, as the Cyber Ninjas “audit” actually found that Trump lost to Biden by a larger margin than the official state count.

US to reopen land borders in November for fully vaccinated (Associated Press)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. will reopen its land borders to nonessential travel next month, ending a 19-month freeze due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the country moves to require all international visitors to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Vehicle, rail and ferry travel between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico has been largely restricted to essential travel, such as trade, since the earliest days of the pandemic. The new rules, to be announced Wednesday, will allow fully vaccinated foreign nationals to enter the U.S. regardless of the reason for travel starting in early November, when a similar easing of restrictions is set to kick in for air travel into the country. By mid-January, even essential travelers seeking to enter the U.S., like truck drivers, will need to be fully vaccinated.

So within a century, medical science has decided that butter was bad for you because of fat and margarine was safe, only to now say that the fat in butter is safe for you while transfats in margarine are deadly.

That was mostly marketing by oleomargarine companies.

Originally in the XIX Century, margarine was made from animal fats. Napoleon wanted a butter substitute which would keep for long periods, as well as a substitute for butter for the lower classes.

In the USA, oleomargerine manufacturers in the XIX Century were mixing things such as cottonseed oil into margarine. By the 1930’s, shortages of animal fat caused more manufacturers to add vegetable oils and subtract more animal fats. That was compounded by WW2, and by 1945, so-called original margarine had disappeared from US store shelves; all margarine was entirely vegetable oils.

In Germany, a process was discovered by which coal could be converted to margarine. That process was discontinued after WW2 due to inefficiency (60kg of coal could create 1kg of margarine).

In the XXI Century in the USA, transfats were removed from margarine.

So within a century, medical science has decided that butter was bad for you because of fat and margarine was safe, only to now say that the fat in butter is safe for you while transfats in margarine are deadly.

I’ve used only butter since around 1975 and I just got my Medicare card today.

Many of the downtown stores in Scottsbluff have tiny laid tile thresholds, with swastikas worked into the tile. The swastikas are those from Native American tradition for “well-being” or “peace, life, and luck.”

The Nazi Party destroyed the use of the symbol for the most part by Native Americans since the Thirties.

Since I’m not really enjoying almost all of the current TV and cinema I decided to go back and watch the original Ocean’s 11. It’s been a few years since I watched it.

An odd movie that existed, I gather, simply to showcase Frank Sinatra’s friends and to pimp their Las Vegas gigs.

This second time around watching it I am struck by how sad the film is, a deep kind of existential sadness.

The characters are clearly crafted to appeal to the WWII veterans and those who relate to such.

But none, zero, of any of the characters in the film have a happy ending.

None of them.

So now I’m wondering how the audience at the time felt about this film. Sure, many likely loved hearing Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin sing - who wouldn’t.

The Wikipedia entry, under Reception, includes this:

Leo Sullivan of The Washington Post called the film “nothing more than a whopping sick joke in Technicolor … It’s a completely amoral tale, told for laughs

I find the film even darker than that, taking an almost Orson Welles dive into amorality and existential vacuum. I almost expect a character at the end to say “Rosebud”.

And when that failed, they acted in the grand public official tradition: They blamed the experts, declared that the government only acted on the advice it was given, and accused them of being the reason the government was so slow to act.

I’d say they are better regulated than cars for power and speed. It’s not like a 700 horsepower Dodge Challenger has any more restrictions than a SmartCar. E-bikes don’t go fast enough to be mopeds, they are classified as (assisted pedal power) pedalecs. There are class ratings and limits to speed, and power. There are a lot of bikes in the X class that are illegal except on private property. I’ve seen East Bay Regional Parks Police patrolling the Iron Horse trail on e-bikes. Around here there are scores of ebikes on the trails and everyone stays mellow around other riders and pedestrians. LA seems to have the not so mellow ebikers.

I understand. There are protocols for overtaking on the trail, I have a bell and call out I’m passing on the left. It’s the same as the road, keep right except to pass. I ride with headlight, tail and brake lights. On the road I ride in the bike lane or take a lane where I have to, my last choice is the sidewalk. If there pedestrians I keep around 8 MPH if they are facing me and 3.5 MPH plus warning protocols if they are facing away.

Scary part is that Brexiteers are getting away with selling this as another test of British toughness and resolve. And getting away with it in much of the media. Even the BBC, although it reports on supply chain and labo(u)r shortages, does not begin to call out those responsible.

And yes, theoretically, this could lead to a reform of the labo(u)r market and better wages and conditions for working people. But given their leadership, I don’t expect we will be seeing much of that.

Sigh, headline writers. In this case, from for-profit journal publishers.

Example:
Popular theory of Native American origins debunked by genetics and skeletal biology

A widely accepted theory of Native American origins coming from Japan has been attacked in a new scientific study, which shows that the genetics and skeletal biology “simply does not match-up”.

That phys.org story was fed by the publisher, Taylor and Francis.

But their claim of “widely accepted” and “popular” struck me as weird.

I try to keep up on human evolution and migration stories, and I have not come across many articles promoting such.

Instead, here’s an article via UPI from their own science writer:

Tooth analysis suggests earliest Native Americans came from Siberia, not Japan

Parallels between archaeological materials on both sides of the Pacific have inspired a few archaeologists to claim at least some of North America’s earliest inhabitants migrated from Japan.

That’s more like it. Proponents of the out-of-Japan idea were never a majority position. Over the last few years DNA evidence has clearly shown that the First Peoples of the Americas are most closely related to ancient populations in north-east Asia, but never have I come across a paper that proposed the Jomon (in neolithic Japan) were the best fit.

With Halloween just a couple of weeks away, many might start to notice some shortages of festive gear when shopping for the occasion.

According to experts, this Halloween, the scariest thing you might see will be empty shelves and a shortage of spooky staples like the traditional pumpkin.
The pumpkin shortage is attributed to extreme weather and shipping delays making it harder to distribute the gourds to their intended locations.

Q clearance is the Department of Energy equivalent to vanilla Top Secret, and I guess it’s called that because DoE has to be different. They also have a category called Formerly Restricted Data, which is, uh, restricted.

And it’s hardly the “highest level of security”. There are Special Access Programs that can have an arbitrary number of people with access to them. Some of them have thousands or tens of thousands of people with access (like the catchall SIGINT or HUMINT compartments), but you could, theoretically, anyway, have a SAP with two people having access to it.

Most goods by weight are transported from ship to rail, and there are significant logjams elsewhere in the system, like around Chicago. Containers are stuck there, and resources are not available to move them. Shipping industry is more accustomed to seasonal ebb and flow, but the changes they’re seeing due to the pandemic are causing surges and logjams almost weekly.

It’s causing everyone to rethink how to deal with shipping. There aren’t enough truckers for goods. Ships are stuck waiting to even offload their goods in port. Just in time processes are showing the strain because the system can’t cope with the delays, particularly affecting core goods for larger durable goods like vehicles, and that has a trickle down effect as well.

Shifting cargo from West Coast to East Coast might help in some cases, but that means transiting the Panama Canal, which also sees more traffic and higher rates.

Experts are hoping to see things return to a more normal condition next year, and that has a lot to do with getting the pandemic under control, especially outside the US.

The problems at the port aren’t just due to the limited hours of operation. It needs workers to man trucks getting the ships offloaded and move them to waiting railyards, which are also understaffed and lack capacity as well. There are bottlenecks as far away as Chicago that tie up offloading at Los Angeles.

Shippers are looking to other US ports to try and reduce the backup. But there’s a nationwide trucker shortage too, so there’s that.

they wont lose their houses - its not like being evicted for nonpayment of rent
but there will be penalties, interest, late fees etc assessed
because most of them will do the ‘performance’ once or twice, not from now on/forever

at some point they’ll either pay it all to get the account current
or when they sell, it’ll come right out of the proceeds then

there is no escape
eventually they will pay all the tax and the additional assessments

I figured out something this morning from reading that the US is lifting restrictions on non-essential travel at the border in November. My nephew’s wife had to get a fiance visa (she’s Mexican) to come to the US to get married, but in order to get that, she had to be vaccinated. Derrrr. I don’t think they have anti-vaxxers in Mexico on the scale we have here.

US to reopen land borders with Canada and Mexico in November
The United States’ neighbours have been pressing it to ease restrictions on nonessential travel that have separated families during the pandemic

theguardian.com

I will admit being a little nervous about my brother going off to the reception, but I think pretty much everyone there was vaccinated. I hope. My other nephew’s wife, M, delivered their daughter by c-section yesterday and she’d been at the reception on Saturday. I learned from my brother that after the initial shock of finding out at her father’s wake that he’d gotten married again, M is getting along famously with her new stepmother L. My brother had been seated between the two at the reception and M made him move so she could sit next to L and chat away.

Given the actual Labour party is still out in the void with their clueless leader, the only way to deal with the issues short of rejoining the EU is for the Tory party to become the party of the workers and promote better pay and training.

But that is far from the Tory roots.

One of the conditions of the UK rejoining the EU would be that the UK would no longer have its own currency, but would have to adopt the Euro.

My SNL told me while supervising moving the majority of his $BigBank$ London financial offices to Frankfort, Paris & Ireland, the resident LSE grads would tell him, “your figures are wrong, everything is going to be all right.”

Captain Kirk landed alive and well with the rest of the crew!

The crew should have come out of the capsule wearing red shirts.

And they will also ignore Government Deep State weather reports and instructions from Deep State air traffic controllers.

And who needs that maintenance that scientists and government drones seem to think is mandatory!!!

re: #353 BeenHereAwhile

One of the conditions of the UK rejoining the EU would be that the UK would no longer have its own currency, but would have to adopt the Euro.

That’s not how it works but it’s a common misunderstanding, same with Schengen Zone agreement for border-free travel. There’s an expectation that EU countries will join the Exchange Rate Mechanism and eventually adopt the Euro as their currency but joining the ERM is voluntary to begin with, and after that the country has to meet convergence criteria between their economy and the rest of the EU, something that was regularly fudged for economic basket-case countries like Greece on accession. Sweden famously refused outright to adopt the Euro in a national referendum a while back.

If Scotland gains independence from the UK and applies to join/rejoin the EU it’s likely we would adopt the Euro as soon as possible as it solves the problem of establishing our own currency and we’re used to monetary policy being handed down from London anyway.
