I imagine the candidate is also riding that Anti-CRT gravy train to victory, because denying the existence of historical racism is unironically a winning issue for these kinds of elections.

So, the latest fad among the Qnuts as well as various assorted righties is using a black flag to signify that no quarter will be given.
Just as a note to the side, declaring that no quarter will be given is a war crime under international law (c.f. Rome Statue 8(b)(xii), and 8(e)(x) as well as Hague and Geneva Conventions), regardless if the armed conflict is internal or international.
So yeah, no national military that is signatory to the Conventions would carry around paraphernalia indicating preparedness to violate the conventions. And that’s assuming the black flags meaning is what some appear to believe it is.
And just to clarify, giving a “no quarter” order is a war crime under all circumstances, regardless if you are a militia or a national military force.

Nah, that assumes that the media are afraid of them. No, the media has just fully self-internalized the ‘liberal media’ label, on top of internalizing the absurd divine right BS the GOP is high on. They truly believe that Dems have to prove themselves worthy of existing at all or otherwise GOP deserves everything by default. GOP never has to prove anything because their very existence is seen as ‘worthy’.

Call me evil, but I’m actually waiting for the conflict that is surely going to arise if the Evangelicals, Mormons and Catholics actually try to impose their beliefs on the local school district. That’d be Mesa Public Schools, which is the largest school district in Arizona, which is not saying much, given the way school districts are broken up here. Because they will fight. See Santa Fe ISD v. Doe (2000), where the minority Catholics and Mormons sued the school district to get rid of specifically Baptist prayers at football games. At one point the federal district court judge had to tell the school district to stop trying to find out who the anonymous plaintiffs were.

Just to give you an idea of how diverse it is around here—we have a big Catholic parish a mile from my house, three Protestant megachurches and more than a dozen smaller congregations within two miles and six Mormon ward houses /stake centers (which will have multiple congregations in them) AND a Mormon temple, also within 2 miles of my house.

Also, from that article:

In that particular terrain, search tactics aren’t straightforward. McDermott had sought the mountain’s 14,130-foot summit on the Knife Edge, the peak’s well-known northeast ridgeline. It’s not a technically difficult route, but as the name suggests, it’s highly exposed. The ridge is a pointed edge in some places, with 1,000-foot drops on either side.

re: #36 Citizen K

In many ways it is even simpler than that. The media makes far more money on “outrageous outrage”. Normalcy is boring. Functioning government is not exciting and they don’t get the eyeballs on the tee-wee and ears on outrage radio when things are going well. They need to manufacture outrage and fear and a cursory look at headlines and lead stories is all you really need to see it.

The media has conditioned itself to defer to the right not as much because they see it as the norm, but rather they see it as their money maker. Controversy and outrage sell and there are big bucks to be made. That is what the real media product consists of and the media execs don’t want to give it up. Even if they were inclined to swatting down those claims and talking points that produce the outrage and controversy, it’s a sure way to turn people off, who then turn the media off and then there are no longer viewers/listeners paying attention to the advertisers. That is the media’s worst nightmare.

Sadly, the days of news organizations being crown jewels and prestige loss-leaders for a network are long gone. I doubt that approach to news will ever return.

The “technicality” of a rock climbing or mountaineering route is based on how quickly you can traverse it. Factors such as: How hard is it to identify handholds/footholds; are there stretches that must be climbed with ropes; for mountaineering, do you need to climb ice walls or cross crevasses or other ice hazards; etc. If you can just walk along a ridgeline to a summit, it’s “technically easy” even if it is a giant NNNNNNOPE to the average layman.

Actually the major problem is a lot of the climbing companies (to maximize profits) will send inexperienced climbers up Everest thinking everything will be cool because there’s a team of Sherpas going with them.

But you need a HELL of a lot more than some good Sherpas to get up and down Everest in one piece.

Experienced mountain climbers have largely blamed Tibet, which makes a ton of money from people climbing the mountain, and thus has no incentive to adopt more stringent requirements for folks who want to go up there.

The MSM is dead-set in favor of fascism as it drives clicks, revenue, and short-term profits which leads to mega-billionaire shareholders getting richer.

This country is currently extinguishing the dying embers of democracy to make the wealthy that much richer. The core 35% of this country’s evil support of fascism and Trump is the sign of a country that has given up the notion of goodwill and democratization that drove American policy throughout much of the 20th Century. In its place is a hybrid regime dominated by a minority population. Welcome to a new South Africa 2.0.

After a Republican win in 2024 (by any means necessary), the newly packed 11-2 right wing SCOTUS will de facto re-write the Constitution, no Convention required. Personal threats and legal actions for sedition against reporters and news organizations with the tacit and often overt help of law enforcement will be the new reality for our current “both sides” MSM.

One mountain I’ve been to the top of but haven’t climbed is Pikes Peak. *My car* climbed it one time. If you climb the standard route, the Barr Trail, it’s a slog. 13 miles one way, 7,400 vertical feet elevation gained. Most people break it up into two days as there is a wonderful camping spot with showers and hot breakfasts about half way up (Barr Camp). There’s people that can clear the summit in under five hours.

When crack and heroin were ravaging the inner city, mostly black, it was a criminal justice matter. When opioids started killing lots of rural midwesterners, mostly white, it became a public health issue.

And by having its own currency not tied to the Euro, it meant that the UK was not subject to EU inflation, and could float its own currency.

Not having its own currency was devastating to Greece; it remained in a deep depression for years. I guess they finally solved the Greek debt crisis, since I haven’t heard anything about it for years.

I kind of hope he wins the GOP primary. He might be crazy enough to give the Democrats a decent chance of winning the Ohio senate seat.

I’ve climbed Long’s Peak. My dad and I left in darkness to get to the keyhole. Then I left him there and climbed to the summit myself (I was second one up that day). It wasn’t difficult, though there were some tricky places. The worst thing was that I had been in flatlands just 24 hours before, so I got a tremendous headache when I was done.

I was also lucky to be taken to climb in Japan’s northern “alps” to a place called Yarigatake. No ropes, but there are places where the trail is just a couple of feet across with thousand-foot drops on either side and a few spots where you have to hold a chain as you go around some rocky outcroppings again with nothing but sky below. About the tallest thing where I grew up was the interstate overpass.

The D.C. jail is full of white people, so suddenly the courts care about jail conditions.

Yep. How many of them in the past have called jails and prisons “country clubs” because the inmates can watch a little TV and have workout rooms and such. They didn’t give a shit about conditions then.

I did Kieners Route aka The Mountaineers Route when I was 17 with my BIL. Chasm Lake to Lambs Slide to Broadway then up. Skirts the stoopid vertical Diamond Face which can be accessed if you keep going across Broadway. We descended the way you came.

That route, Pyramid Peak’s ascent of NW ridge and descent of NE ridge, Little Bear hourglass, Capitol Peak’s knife ridge, that sums up the hardest routes I’ve done. Longs Peak was definitely the most exciting.

I remember how abrupt our arrival at the summit of Longs Peak was. It was literally like getting out of a swimming pool to gain the summit. There were already probably 50 people on the summit, and my BIL and I just came out of nowhere on the east side of the summit block all decked out in climbing gear. It was a heady experience.

I’ve been up the Barr Trail twice, once when I was 11 (Boy Scouts) and once when I was 14 (Civil Air Patrol). It is a tough hike but doesn’t require any special skills, just common sense and good preparation.

Arizonans waging guerrilla warfare against self-driving Waymo vans (1-2-2019)

Not everyone is ready to accept self-driving cars in their own neighborhoods, but it appears some Arizonans are taking that to the extreme with methods that would be right at home with the Van der Linde Gang.

The New York Times published a story on Monday about how some residents of Chandler, Arizona, have been waging guerrilla-style attacks against Waymo’s self-driving vehicles. Vans have had their tires slashed, and other locals have tried to run the vans off the road. The NYT says that one attack involved a person threatening a Waymo employee “with a piece of PVC pipe.” One person even waved a gun at a Waymo vehicle.

And now Josh is dating this charmer—sounds like a perfect match:

At least two of the three fundraisers who quit Josh Mandel’s U.S. Senate campaign in recent months did so because of a toxic work environment created by Rachel Wilson, the campaign finance director, said two sources close to the situation.

Wilson cussed out her subordinates, often demanded 12-hour workdays, berated them in front of others and called them names, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution and career damage.

The Keyboard of the Winds is what that’s called.

And yeah, the Keyhole route is totally doable for people in good shape, just have sturdy shoes, enough food and water, good clothing, and start at O’Dark Hundred (My BIL and I started just before 2 a.m.). It is hard to get lost what with the big bullseyes painted on the rock to denote the route beyond the Keyhole, considered Class 3, serious mountain climbing to be sure, but not extraordinarily hard. It is an exciting place.

One of the conditions of the UK rejoining the EU would be that the UK would no longer have its own currency, but would have to adopt the Euro..

That will not happen unless the UK economy truly tanks and the Pound starts to drop below the Euro.

I could at that point well imagine them making a deal whereby the UK gets to keep the designation “Pound” and use Pound notes and coins on UK territory (whatever is left of it) but it will be a Euro for all intents and purposes.

That’s a big fucking NOPE from me.

Ok, breaking my promise. I found someone’s blog of the 3-day climb I was invited to in 1989 in Japan’s northern Alps. It was very similar—just spectacular (but for someone who hadn’t done any climbing before, quite terrifying). We did this in July. I happened to be training for a marathon, but this was far better than running. In August I ran a 1hr 20min half marathon; then in Sept. I ran a marathon in 3 hours and 14 seconds (shouldn’t have stopped for that last water break, I guess). I got into biking when I returned to the states.

Memories of Mom “mixing butter” when I was a kid. Tub of white margarine with a causer of carotene. Mom would put the margarine in a mixing bowl, break the capsule and then mix the dye into the margarine. I told her she didn’t have to do that. Didn’t matter to me since I would spread it on Roman Meal bread! I loved that bread, would eat a couple slices smeared with margarine for breakfast.

A lot of modern ISO container cranes are now automated with the “grab” fitted with sensors and cameras everywhere — the crane operators aren’t necessarily anywhere near the crane itself any more, instead they’re in comfortable offices using screens and keyboards to “drive” the cranes. They can switch from one crane to another without having to get out of a cab, use an elevator to the ground, walk over to another crane etc.

Barefoot Grin  Oct 13, 2021 • 3:22:04pm

I think I’m going to end up hating living in this state if the GOP are insistent on turning it into a dystopia:

[begin article] The vaccination contracts that sparked disruptive protests that shut down an Executive Council meeting two weeks ago were voted down at Wednesday’s Council meeting.

The scope of the two contracts included $27 million in federal funding that would have created 13 state health department positions for immunization work. The positions included vaccine outreach, assistance for health care providers navigating the logistics of vaccines and support for data entry on the state’s immunization information system. Health officials had described the contracts, and the money tied to them, as key to boosting the state’s vaccination efforts.

Councilor Cinde Warmington, a Democrat, was the only councilor to vote in favor of the funding. All four Republicans on the council voted against the money.

The vote followed a period of intense questioning of Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Lori Shibenette, an angry back and forth between Gov. Chris Sununu and several councilors, and a long statement from Councilor Janet Stevens hailing the importance of vaccine equity and combating disinformation, meant to preface her “no” vote.

In a statement issued after the vote, Sununu said the “vote showed a reckless disregard for the lives we are losing while they turn away the tools our state needs to fight and win this battle against COVID.”

Speaking to reporters later in the day, Sununu said he pushed fellow-Republican councilors to support the contracts as hard as he could, but described the party-line vote against the money as driven by disinformation.

“At the end of the day, there was no rational, logical reason to say ‘no’ to these contracts,” Sununu said. “Every argument that the council attempted to bring up was shot down immediately.”

Opponents to the federal funds, meanwhile, like Kelley Potenza of Rochester, said Sununu has disregarded what they say is the will of the people.

“The people who want the shot have gotten the shot, they want the shot,” Potenza said. “Leave the other freaking people alone, we are done.” [more in the link]

“Fine. Die.”
It’s good that I don’t live there. But we have plenty of Trumpers in Massachusetts, and even in my town’s mayoral race. The challenger and his supporters are all Trumpers.

I kind of wish we could relocate south, but I doubt we could afford to and I don’t want the long commute. Anyway, yeah I gather that Massachusetts as a whole is not the liberal state that everyone claims. People also misunderstand Vermont based on Bernie and Ben and Jerry’s. Vermonters can be as viciously racist and Trumpy as anywhere depending on the location (NH folks, too, of course).

A sane GOP Governor needs a Democratic legislature to accomplish real goals that benefit the state. Do there remain any sane GOP states, where both the governor and the legislature cooperate to help the citizens of their state, even those that are not wealthy?

Well look who just got a cheery note from the 1/6 Committee!

Jan. 6 committee issues a scathing subpoena to a Trump official implicated in plot to overturn the election

The House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack has just issued a scathing subpoena to Jeffrey Clark, a former Trump Justice Dept. official accused of scheming with the then-president to overturn the results of the presidential election.

“The Select Committee’s investigation has revealed credible evidence that you attempted to involve the Department of Justice in efforts to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power,” the subpoena reads. “As detailed in a report issued by the Senate Judiciary Committee, you proposed that the Department send a letter to state legislators in Georgia and other states suggesting that they delay certification of their election results and hold a press conference announcing that the Department was investigating allegations of voter fraud.”

Have fun, Jeffrey!

I read about a construction crane operator. He’d been working for a while and was watching another operator working his crane.

Those cranes are on very small-looking towers. They flex. A lot.
The guy was watching his crane flex and bend as it was being operated.

He walked off the job site and never returned.

You want them to flex. You don’t actually want them to be stiff.

A year of country music controversies has left some fans disappointed — and wondering whether they should keep listening | The Washington Post

Interesting, if not a tad predictable, article about some country fans getting turned off by the reactionary artists.

I don’t know, though. I mean… Modern country is so so bad. This video is eight years old but is still quite relevant.

Why Country Music Was Awful in 2013

And then I’m reminded of Key & Peele…

Key & Peele - Country Music

There’s good stuff out there, though. Sturgill Simpson is one of my favorites. I love what Billy Strings is doing for bluegrass.
